Hearts and Heroes
February 10, 2018
Hello, All! Well, January has come and gone by the time you read this... Another year! I hope you enjoyed a wonderful Christmas season with family and friends.
I'd like to take this opportunity to let you about one of our board members. Many of you know she's been in hospital. We all hope and pray for a complete recovery.
Of course, our annual fundraiser, Hearts and Heroes, is right around the corner. We hope you'll join us for an evening of fine food, great fun and fundraising for our beloved organization.
As always, if you or someone you know is interested in serving on the board of directors, please send me an email - I'd love to hear from you.
I'll leave you with this quote from Anne Frank, "How wonderful it is that nobody need wait a single moment before starting to improve the world." Come to the Hearts and Heroes fundraiser and improve the world of our clients at LINX Connect Centre.

Is it ever too late for plan B… or C… or D… or J… plan Z? So long as we never give up, there is no such thing as failing. Sure it’s disappointing when we don’t achieve our expectations; but with disappointment, lessons come our way.
Instead of beating yourself up and getting angry with the situation, take a deep breath and a firm step back. Then ask yourself questions like: “Why did I do it this way?”, “How can I do that differently next time?”, “Was this the right time to try that out?”, “What was I trying to accomplish? How close did I get to that?”, “Who can help me with this to achieve a better result next time?”
February Lunch Snacks are: February 2nd – Tortellini Meatball Stew February 9th – Broccoli Salad February 16th – Teas Brag (Dessert) February 23rd – Cowboy Mashed Potatoes

The residential program is going into uncharted territory. We are looking at providing respite for individuals under the age of 18. We will try it out with a couple of clients at first before jumping all the way in. I am personally excited as it will help clients transition into the adult world. We are going to start from age 14-18. Can you imagine if you already know some of the staff when you go from being a youth in high school to a program for adults? I know it will make things so much smoother for them. I am so excited.
We also would like to welcome 2 new support home providers Merle and Junior as well as a newish outreach worker, Kyla . Say “Hi” if you see them.

January has started off with a great deal of enthusiasm because of the City of Leduc. To ensure the safety of the office and the support to LINX, we have hired Joan Nykiforuk in the Office Assistant role. Welcome Joan to the team! We are also excited to be able to bring back the outreach cooking classes. They have been greatly missed. The Peer Training class has been working on many projects, but there is one that I am excited to announce will be unveiled at Hearts and Heroes. They have created a music video with instructions for safety. The clients and staff are the actors, the class wrote the lyrics (to the tune of Walk the Line), and it was beautifully performed by Greg Nixon. It has already brought many a staff to tears (including me!), so I am looking forward to the reaction it will get at Hearts and Heroes. Yet another reason you do not want to miss our wonderful event! Finally, and as always, I would like to thank everyone for all of their support, and wish you a happy, healthy and safe Hearts and Heroes month! ~ Nicole

This month I was able to sit down with a gentleman who has been a huge supporter of LINX
for many years. This year Forrest Wright of Forrest J. R. Wright Professional Corporation was
the first supporter to buy a table at our Annual Hearts and Heroes Gala. Thank you, Forrest!
Forrest has been working behind our scenes for the last 3 years. His firm completes our yearly
audit and ensures that LINX is being financially accountable to all government agencies.
Forrest is a huge community supporter and has helped out with many other organizations
such as Second Glance, the Leduc Outdoor Pool and the Jr. Athletic Club. He always seems to
find time to help out these smaller organizations. We are definitely grateful for all the hours
he puts in for us.
Forrest talked about how he always enjoys the Gala and enjoys the socialization of it all and
usually gets to interact with lots of people. He talked about how great it is to see all the
people coming together and having fun for a good cause.
We are very grateful for all you do for us Forrest and look forward too many more years of
working with you!
As a job coach for LINX this was a very educational interview for me to do and learn a tiny bit
more of all the hours and people that go into running behind the scenes at LINX. This makes
me very grateful to be a small part of it.
Parents! Clients! Employers! Staff! Neighbours! If you would like to be a part of or refer someone for “Through our Eyes”, please contact Nicole at 780-980-9423 ext 222 or [email protected].

Please help us celebrate our Citizen of the Month, Residential Staff of the month, Staff of the Month, and Employer of the month. “At the time there was good lighting, I knew that
the contrast between the snow and the trees would
be magnificent after editing.”
~ Anthony
“This picture made me happy to see the bird on my
hand. My favorite part of this trip was how quiet it
was and I loved listning to the birds.”
~ Margie
“I really enjoyed editing this photo and pulling out all
of the colours from the bird using the exposures. I
liked feeling the birds and looking at all of the
different colours.
~ Meagan
“ I took this photo because it highlighted the sky,

Diana Princess of Wales, Bulimia and mental health – Under the
magnificently poised image Diana presented to the world, she struggled with bulimia, self-injury and lingering feelings of worthlessness. Diana’s candid self-disclosures in interviews may be her most powerful and unrecognized legacy. Her honesty helped chip away at the stigma surrounding mental health and encouraged others to get help. It is not an exaggeration to say that thousands of people changed their lives because Diana talked about hers. http://motto.time.com/4918729/princess-diana-mental-health-legacy/ https://www.disabled-world.com/disability/awareness/famous/
Aaron Desjarlais! Aaron has recently taken on
a great deal of responsibility in his personal life; despite this, he has been able to manage his work life and has shown a greater ability in managing his work responsibilities. Furthermore, Aaron has reached out to the supports available in his life to make the best of the big changes going on in his world. Well done Aaron!!!
Sandra Bowmaster! Sometimes it seems like
Sandra has four or five hands to offer in helping out around the office, both with client and with staff lives. She has a kind heart and a solid will to enhance the daily lives of others. Thank you, Sandra, for your effort as a part of the LINX team!!!
Sobeys Beaumont! Sobeys has been a
consistent support toward LINX and the individuals they directly work with. The patience and understanding that Sobeys staff have is above and beyond, taking the time to listen, communicate and collaborate with LINX. Thank you for all your support!!!
Teany Johnson! She is is an outreach worker that
has not been with us long but she has won over a couple of clients that do not win over easy. She has job coaches coming in and saying who is this new outreach worker, so and so says she is wonderful and they hope that they have her again. She volunteered right away to try and do one of our ISP’s. She has been reliable and friendly!!!
