Letter to the Editor

Anzac Day 2007 So often we hear only of the negative things our children get into so I would like to take this opportunity to tell you of a positive event involving young people.

As has been my practice for a number of years I attended the 11am Anzac Day service at the Lilydale Cenotaph.

I wish to congratulate the two students who took an active part in proceedings this year.

The young man who read out the poem did an excellent job firstly in explaining the background to the poem and then in the reading of it.

He spoke very clearly and was easily understood even from where I was standing which was at the back near the entrance to the Cenotaph.

The young lady who spoke also did a wonderful job.

Congratulations also to the Lilydale RSL who involved the students in this manner.

Other students also laid a wreath on behalf of the school and it is great to see them involved in community events and to pay their respects to those who served our nation in times of conflict.

If this is a representation of students the Lilydale District School is producing then the school and their parents can be very proud of them. Helen.

Lilydale District Pony Club

Mothers Day is always an important day for pony club. This is the day we have our pony club game championships, and compete with all the other pony clubs in the north of Tasmania. There are 6 members to each team, and 18 games to play on the day. Only 4 riders ride in each game, and each rider must compete in 12 games.

The games day was glorious weather, but when we were preparing for the introductory presentation parade, we discovered one of our ponies was unwell. We had to pull out our reserve pony, Jasmine, which resulted in a change of riders. Jasmine sometimes gets excited at games, and is usually ridden by a beginner rider. We didn’t want Jasmine to get too excited, (which might make her difficult to ride later) so Isabelle rode Jasmine (a short pony), and Tia rode Isabelle’s tall horse.

This was quite a challenge, because Isabelle had chosen to ride games better suited to tall horses – and now she was on a short one. The opposite was the case for

Tia, and we weren’t allowed to change the order of the games for the riders. Never mind, everyone rode well and enjoyed themselves. We were placing fourth most of the day, but slipped to 6th at the end. The first 4 teams went on to the state finals, where they play against 4 from the south and 4 from the North West.

The July 1st rally is when a lot of new riders join the club, as it is the beginning of the financial year and our fees are paid annually. If you are interested in joining, come along to the June 3rd rally for a look. Last year our fees were $250 and these are set each year at our AGM. This year our AGM is on Thursday July 19th. Lilydale Bowls

The Lilydale Bowls Club completed a successful season with a dinner and trophy presentation last month. Around 50 members and guests attended the evening of dinner and music held in the Lilydale football clubrooms. Life member and former resident Fred McLean and wife Kathy were welcomed on the night.

The men are looking forward to next season when they hope to “go one better” after making the grand final, but losing to a determined Ravenswood team on the day. The ladies are also expecting to finish further up the ladder next year as they had quite a few new players who will have benefited from this year’s experience.

Brian and Lona Bardenhagen donated the novice trophies this season. Brendan Street who improved immensely throughout the season and has a promising future won the Mens event. Faye Chugg took out the ladies event after a close game against Barbara Wayne.

Gifts of appreciation donated by Rob Patterson were presented to Chris Gunn and Rex McKercher, greenkeepers.

Tony Murfett enjoyed a highly successful season and was awarded the “Best and Fairest” trophy for 2006-2007

Mary Walsh Centre News

We missed the deadline last month as I was away, so I’ve included last month’s news here as well.

On the way to Grindelwald in late March, we stopped for a picnic at the Tailrace Park, where we consumed our food as we watched children at play, birdlife on the river and enjoyed the shade of some leafy trees.

The following week we attended the Harp Ensemble and afternoon tea at Aldersgate. The all women group had made their cardboard harps at an Adult Education workshop.

Rebecca Long brought her new baby daughter, Abby, to meet us at the centre, accompanied by former cook and proud grandmother, Jennifer Story and Alyssa Nicholas. We took turns holding the baby and some of us were photographed with her.

We have welcomed Carol Northeast to the centre as a volunteer on Tuesdays. Carol has befriended clients assisting with knitting and despite protests to the contrary, has demonstrated her artistic flair in decoration and colour sense!

Clients enjoyed Maureen’s retelling of some of the events of her early childhood on Robbins’ Island.

Jennifer Smyth’s quilting talent has come to our aid in the final stages of our Season’s Quilt. Patiently Jennifer stitches away and it is looking great. We hope everyone will do at least a couple of stitches so we can truly say it was a joint effort.

Clients have enjoyed my reading aloud from Bob Benseman’s book “Bushman’s Notebook. Perhaps some of you will recall this local writer’s interesting column that once appeared regularly in the newspaper.

During my absence everyone assisted Joan with her preparations for her friends 100th birthday. It sounded like a busy, festive time. Congratulations to Margery who turned 100!

We welcome Trish Hope to the centre as our new Day Centre Assistant. She is formerly from the mainland and has recently moved to the Lilydale area.

I made a wreath on behalf of the centre, which Helen Chick laid at the Anzac service.

Debbie’s Sago Pudding was enjoyed by clients and prompted many memories. I was pleasantly surprised to find I enjoyed Debbie’s Lemon Sago despite my childhood recollection was that sago was rather unpleasant!

Heather Griffith has attended the centre on several occasions to entertain and encourage our musical expression. We thank Heather for sharing her talents with us.

Please phone Sharon or Wayne if you have plans to sell in the near future.

Debbie and I conducted a stall prior to Mother’s day. Despite there being only a small number of people about, we sold $85.00 worth of craft, bric-a-brac and raffle tickets. Thankyou to the kind and generous people who supported us and to Bardenhagen’s who allowed us to shelter from the sun under their verandah.

Our visitors have included board member Irma Raitzer, Jacqui Stevens, who is new to the area, Patricia Chadwick, as well as Ellena Geeves from Way FM.

We are planning our next “Dining with Friends” event for the 19th June. Please contact the centre if you would like to receive an invitation and remember that we cater to special needs.

Today we held a “Biggest Morning Tea”, raising $64.00 for cancer. It was great to see the centre packed with many happy faces and voices. Thanks to Debbie and others for the fabulous food provided. Thanks also to Lloyd Poke who brought along some of his fine-looking prize winning vegetable gourds for display at the centre.

The day ended with another singing session. It is so good to hear some of those old songs and great to have Harvey to add his deeper tones to the singing.

The winners of the raffle were: • Trish Hope- crocheted rug, • Eunice Finan- “Hot Rock” warming plate and • Christian Roney-camera. Congratulations to the winners!

Health Notes from the Lilydale Pharmacy

SINUS PROBLEMS If you wake up in the morning with a headache, if the area round your nose and eyes is tender to touch, and if you have a thin discharge from the nose or nasal congestion, then chances are you have sinus problems.

The sinuses are air-filled spaces in the bones behind the nose and above the eyes. They can become inflamed and blocked, sometimes causing considerable pain.

Other symptoms can include fever, fatigue, sore throat and cough. Of course, many of these symptoms resemble those associated with the common cold; so sinus problems can sometimes be difficult to diagnose.

There are almost as many causes for sinus problems as there are symptoms. Having a virus infection such as occurs with the common cold can certainly lead to sinus problems, but there are other causes too. Hay fever from allergies to things such as pollens, dust mite, mould and animal dander can cause sinus problems. Dental infections can spread to the sinuses; and irritation of the nasal passages by air pollution, chemicals, foods and stress can all be factors in the development of sinus problems.

Fortunately there are a number of treatments available which can effectively treat these irritating symptoms.

If the major problem is a blocked nose, the use of a decongestant can be of great benefit. These preparations can be taken orally in tablet form or applied topically in the form of nasal drops or sprays. The decongestants work by shrinking the membranes inside the nose thus allowing better drainage and improved circulation of air.

The nasal sprays and drops work more quickly than the tablets but they should never be used for more than seven consecutive days. Long term use of nasal sprays can lead to what is known as rebound congestion. If long term treatment is needed, take a two day break from the decongestant sprays, then resume for another five days. (i.e. 5 days on and 2 days off) Narium or Fess are saline sprays and can be used long term as often as needed to help clear the sinuses. No rebound congestion occurs with saline sprays.

Rebound congestion doesn’t occur with the oral decongestants; however, the tablets may not be suitable for people with other existing medical conditions such as high blood pressure. They can also cause wakefulness and sleeping problems if taken at night.

If allergies are the likely cause, antihistamines or the combination antihistamine/decongestants are a good option to consider.

Chronic sinusitis, fever or bleeding from the sinus may require antibiotics. Chronic sinusitis may be without pain and the nose may be blocked for large parts of the day.

If you have a sinus problem, we can help to select the right medication for you.

Karoola Playgroup

We have been having a lot of fun this term at Playgroup. We have been making the most of the fine weather by spending a lot of time outside riding bikes, ball games on the oval and playing in the sandpit.

We have just conducted our Mothers Day Raffle, which was a great success. The first prize was won by one of our members, Michelle Murfett.

We have just purchased musical instruments, which we hope will keep the children busy during the winter months.

Next term we have 2 trips planned, we are going to the new Kids Paradise and McDonalds. Once again we have booked Pied Piper Portraits for October. Everyone from the community is welcome to come along and have their photo taken for a donation to Playgroup. We will have further details closer to the time.

We have a lot of members at Playgroup this year. So if you have a child 5 years under, we would invite you to come along and join in the fun. We meet every Wednesday from 10 till 12 noon. Please bring morning tea and drink for child, tea and coffee supplied.

Lilydale Neighbourhood Watch Report

Twelve people attended this meeting to hear the Mayor Ivan Dean talk about what is happening in Launceston and the surrounding areas.

Of special interest to the people of Lilydale is the proposal for Hollybank. A bike track and flying fox are two projects being considered a this time, he also said that the water situation for Lilydale will be changed in the near future.

If you have any ideas on what the council could do for our area now is the time to put these requests

forward. He spoke about the upgrade of the flood levies and the on going issues with the C.H. Smith building. The new aquatic Centre was also mentioned. He also spoke about the proposal to offer free parking on the outskirts of the city and then have shuttle buses bringing shoppers into the CBD.

There were five crimes reported in our area in the last month. Three of these were assaults.

Concerns have been raised about the safety of the intersection of Pipers River Rd and Lilydale road. With the possibility of increased heavy traffic in the area it is hoped something can be done about this intersection.

The next meeting will be held at the Lilydale Fire Station at 7.30pm on the 14th June 2007, followed by supper.

New members always welcome.

Lilydale Landcare Report

The very welcome, recent rain has made it possible for us to schedule a working bee at Merythr Park – the ground will be much softer to work in!! There are a variety of jobs that need to be done, from pulling weeds to sorting stakes and debagging plants –something for everyone. Come along for whatever time you can spare. See details below.

For a long time now The Progressive has been the major way that we have communicated with the community and while we don’t intend to change this, we would also like to be able to let our members, and any other interested parties, know about anything that may be happening between issues of The Progressive. In order to do this an email list has been established – if you would like your address added to the list please send it to [email protected]

Now is an excellent time to apply for your own private post office box at the Lilydale Post Office. Our mail is currently arriving into the post office around 9.00am Monday to Friday. Once unloaded, we are required to sort the mail to private boxes, counter deliver and for delivery to the surrounding areas, Underwood, Turners Marsh, Fingerpost area, Lalla, Karoola, Bangor and a large section on the way to Pipers River. With this in mind, the complete mail delivery is often not sorted until 10.30am depending on the quantity of mail received.

Australia Post regulations require that the private box mail is sorted first, so if you require your mail urgently, this is the way to access your mail at the earliest possible time. Also leasing a private box allows you to access your mail 24 hours per day, seven days per week. It is also a convenient way to hold your mail while you are away on business or holidays. So if you require a private box, just call into the Lilydale Post Office for an application form or ring 6395 1177 to arrange for a form to be mailed out to you.

To all private post office box customers, please note, that your postal address is your actual box number and not your residential address. To avoid delays with your mail, please ensure that your box number is used on all correspondence. If we can help you with any postal requirements, please call in to the Lilydale Post Office, where the friendly stall will be only too happy to assist you with your enquiry.

Badminton in Lilydale

Badminton was once so popular in Lilydale during the mid 1980s there were two pennant teams, a social club, junior coaching one night a week and a ladies daytime club which began in 1976 and continued for over 25 years. All the Lilydale clubs used the “showbuilding” in Doaks Road.

Lebrina and Pipers River also had pennant teams and the Karoola ladies played on Mondays for several years.

Early minutes of the daytime ladies club record Betty Williamson as president and Janice Hammersley as secretary. Daily rental of the building was $2.00.

Wood fires were a must during cold winter mornings so members were to bring what wood they could and minutes of the second meeting record two ladies being delegated to “get wood from the bush”.

The building once contained several long wooden stools but over the years they were gradually used as firewood (not by badminton people of course). More than once the Tuesday ladies arrived to find half a stool protruding from the fireplace.

The pennant club fielded two teams for a number of years. During the early years the opposing teams travelled from Launceston and other places and the wood fires and suppers were much enjoyed. Social games were organised with teams from Legerwood and Lebrina and the Lilydale Ladies sometimes visited the Karoola ladies and vice versa. In later years all pennant badminton was played at Dowling Street in Launceston. The junior coaching generally took place on a Friday night. Margaret Hanstein and Lindsay (Tiger) Pollard donated their services for a number of years. The pennant clubs last season was 1990 and those players who didn’t retire joined clubs in Launceston and Scottsdale.

The Dean family from Karoola devoted several years to badminton in Lilydale and Thomas Deane (son of Chris and Helen) represented Tasmania at junior level in 2006 and was chosen to captain the U17 State Badminton team.

Update On Council Works Around Lilydale

• Bangor Road Bridge crossing Second River • Doaks Road footpath construction

The Lilydale Progressive - June 2007 Page 11

Doaks Road Bridge will be lengthened by 4 metres. The new bridge will be built in two halves to ensure one lane is kept open to through traffic. If something unforeseen happens that requires the closure of the whole bridge, the work will be carried out during a week-end.

The programmed start date is Tuesday 29 May 2007. The work also includes relocating the water main. The existing main runs through the creek. The new main will be attached to the side of the bridge beams.

The water pipe work includes water disruptions.

Doaks Road residents will be advised of all programmed disruptions as they will need to fill their kettles with water for use throughout the day.

Contacts for this work are: Andrew Hill, Contracts Administrator 0419 356 807 Jack van Ek, Contractor 0418 140 651

The Bangor Road Bridge upgrade is in progress. The bridge remains closed to all traffic until early June.

Doaks Road footpath upgrade – Work is still in progress and should be completed by 25 May 2007.

DON’T FORGET….TO BOIL YOUR WATER water should be boiled before being used for drinking or food preparation.

Water should be boiled on the stove top - not in the kettle as it needs to boil continuously for 3 minutes and kettles switch off once the water begins to boil.

Lilydale Football Club

We were saddened recently by the passing of our dedicated life member, Val Arnold, who served the club alongside her husband, Jack, for 50 years. She worked tirelessly in the canteen, washing jumpers, cooking player’s teas, supervising dinners and attending everything that was happening around the Club.

She received a merit award from the AFL for services to football. Val was also a very one eyed supporter, following her sons and grandsons for many years and was often vocal against the umpire and opposition players. Fond memories of Val was how she would hide Aunty Pats delicious ‘pink cakes’ at the footy dinners to give to her helpers when the washing up was done. Val was a dear friend and ‘grandma’ to all at the Club.

The game we were looking forward to against last year’s premiers – the Crows, turned out a real fizzer, as Lilydale outplayed them in every facet of the game, winning by over 100 points. In perfect conditions Lilydale played excellent football, sticking to their game

plan, switching play, making space and bringing all their players into the game. Connor Tuckerman played his best game of the season, as did Zane Patmore and were ably backed up by Levi Tuthill, Steve Buchanan, Kim Curtis, Gary Knight and Reece Dunne in a very good team effort.

The game against Bridport did not reach the standard of the previous game against the Crows, again winning over 100 points. The standard of the other teams seems to have dropped off at this stage of the season compared to last year.

Teddy Hawes played a great game, being our best players, closely followed by Joe Rattray, Zane Patmore, Levi Tuthill, Gary Knight, Michael Routledge, Heath Bird and Ben Arnold in another team effort. Neville and Jeff have really got the team firing! Hopefully it will continue for the whole season.

The Seconds are improving each week as they are getting more players back and have been untroubled by the opposition team each week. The ‘old fossil’, Bruce Lockhart has a new lease of life on the footy ground kicking 4 goals against Bridport and looking most dangerous. Stuart Fisher has been best man on ground for several weeks and must make the senior line up soon.

Other players doing well are Taylor Grimes, Scott Brockett, Chris Porteous, Rowbottom, Alex Blair and Stuart Baker.

With 42 at training last Thursday, it means if the players want to make the teams they will have to put in a determined effort and perform well on a Saturday to make selection and who couldn’t perform well after eating Roxy’s cooking?

All three teams haven’t lost a game this season with the Under 16’s winning comfortably against the Crows, but had a much closer game against Bridport which was good for the boys to have a harder game, winning by 13 points. Many of last years Under 13’s team members are starting to play good football and fitting in well with the team.

It was good to see so many under 13, 9 and 8 getting a game last week.

There has been great supporter attendance, at both home and away games with the canteen and bar being very busy.

A BBQ luncheon run by the football club at a Piper’s River sale was most successful raising $500. Thanks to the helpers Janet, Maree, Gay, Faye and Ian for their work on the day.

The dress up night was attended by a reasonable crowd – theme being Priscilla Queen of the Desert

with several of the girls going to a great effort, dressing up in fine style with Ms Chugg taking out the prize with ‘her’ outfit.

Next games: June 2nd and 9th will be Byes. 16th June - St. Helens @ St. Helens 23rd June - Branxholm at Lilydale 30th June - Ringarooma at Ringarooma C.W.A Notes

The Lilydale branch of C.W.A. held their AGM on 2nd May at the Uniting Church. Acting Northern President Dianna Baker was welcomed and officiated for the election of office bearers – these were the same as the previous year – i.e. President Margaret Hanstein, Secretary Dorothy Story, and Treasurer Eileen Brooks. Dorothy presented a comprehensive, action filled report for 2006-2007, this was accepted by Dianna who congratulated our branch for their untiring efforts in an interesting years activities.

Dianna presented gifts of recognition to three members for their services to C.W.A; Margaret Hanstein and Helen Chick for their 20 years. A special thank you to Eileen Brooks for her 20 plus years, could be 30? A wonderful contribution as Treasurer, she is very much appreciated by all members. Well done!

General meeting followed AGM after a shared lunch was enjoyed by an open fire and much discussion about the next fundraiser for our branch.

Several members enjoyed CWA Sunday service at Uniting Church, Scottsdale on May 6th.

A certificate of appreciation has been presented to our branch from Lilydale District School in acknowledgement of our contribution to ‘Matthew’s Playground”.

A donation of $50 was sent to the Examiner Winter relief appeal.

Next meeting June 6th at OCR, 1.30 p.m. We have ten members – more would be good – a great pass time and a very rewarding way of helping others both near and far. Come and join us, we don’t bite! We would love to have your company. Roll call will be items for the Dutch auction.

Lilydale Online Access Centre

A huge thank you to those who attended our Brainstorming session this week. The creative juices were certainly flowing and some fantastic ideas for courses, activities and services the Centre can provide were forthcoming.

We’ll certainly try our hardest to incorporate as many as possible into our Annual Plan for the next 12 months. So make sure to keep a close eye on the Progressive for details of the latest offerings.

To those who have indicated their interest in our free E-Learn course. I’ll know in the next week or so how many places I have. For those who would like to undertake this course. I’m taking names and numbers for placements in the 3rd school term now. Unfortunately places are very limited so it’s definitely a case of “first in - best dressed”

One of the ideas that came up was to let you all know the types of programs we have on the computers at the Centre. That way if you need help with the same program on your computer you can ask us for specific help, so here goes. Our software includes: Microsoft Office 2003: Word, Excel, Access, Powerpoint, Publisher, Outlook Microsoft Photostory (turn your photos into a movie) Corel Paint Shop Pro 8 MYOB V 16 MGI Photovista (stitching software for making photo panoramas) Macromedia Dreamweaver 8 Adobe: Acrobat 8, Photoshop CS, Indesign CS, Illustrator CS Google Picasa (photo management software) Google Earth

If you have no idea what any of these programs do why not come into the centre and find out. We can help you to make the most of your computer, and gain some new skills at the same time.

Senior Citizens Club

Our club days are Tuesday and Friday afternoons. All Seniors are welcome to come along for a friendly chat and afternoon tea, give us your ideas for any activities you are interested in and bring a friend.

We entered 2 teams in the Perth Carnival which was held earlier this month, but withdrew as one of our loyal members passed away.

Our 2 pennant teams are really enjoying their games, we are running second on the ladder in Division 2 with 22 points, 3 behind the leaders, North Launceston. One of the pennant teams in Division 2 pulled out because of lack of members, so it really makes it better as we won’t have a bye. So keep up the good bowling folks.

Our next meeting at the club rooms on the 5th June at 1.30 p.m. See you next month.

Vale: Val Arnold: loyal club member, friend, fellow bowler, sadly missed. Rest Peacefully.

Story of a duck

A duck walks into a pub and orders a pint of lager and a ham sandwich. The landlord looks at him and says, "But you're a duck!"

"Your eyes work", replies the duck, wryly.

"And you talk!" exclaims the landlord.

"And your ears", says the duck.

"Now can I have my beer and my sandwich please?"

"Certainly", says the landlord, "sorry about that... it's just we don't get many ducks in this pub. What are you doing round this way?"

"I'm working on the building site across the road", explains the duck.

The landlord watches, astounded, as the duck drinks his beer, eats his sandwich and leaves. The duck visits regularly for 2 weeks.

Then one day the circus comes to town. The owner of the circus comes into the pub and the landlord says to him, "You're with the circus aren't you? I know this duck that would be just brilliant in your circus - he talks, drinks beer and everything!".

"Sounds marvellous", says the owner, "get him to give me a call".

So the next day when the duck comes into the pub the landlord says, "Hey Mr. Duck, I reckon I can line you up with a top job, paying really good money!" Yeah?", says the duck, "Sounds great, where is it?" "At the circus", says the landlord.

Classifieds

"The circus?", the duck enquires, a bit bemused. "That's right", replies the landlord. "What, the place with the big tent? Big canvas roof, hole in the middle, loads of animals?" asks the duck. "That's right!", says the landlord

The duck looks confused. "Why would they want a plasterer?"
