important in a reading selection, fiction and nonfiction, compared to what is not important as evidenced by a successful sort of chapter 12 and 13 of “The Lightning Thief.”

HINT: the only things that are important are things that affect the end of the story (or in our case, the end of the scene). Things that move the plot FORWARD to the next setting.
