DearHow to find us

Welcome to the University of Stavanger, and welcome to the University Library!

In this guide you will find useful information about the Library to help you through your studies.

Our librarians are here to help you. You can ask the librarians at the front desk anything. For example how to find relevant sources within your studies or how to quote an academic source correctly. The easiest way to reach us if you are not on campus is through email: [email protected]

Always open! The University Library at Ullandhaug is open 24/7. By using your student card you can access the Library at any time.

Our electronical resources are always available, from anywhere, as long as you have internet access. Use your username and password from UiS through this link to get remote access:

Everything is free of charge to borrow at the Library.

The loan period for books is normally three weeks. If there are no reservations on your material, you can easily extend the loan period through the Library’s web site or at the self-service loan machines.

Fees may occur if you do not return your materials within the due date.

E-books can be downloaded to your computer or tablet for a certain period (depends on the book). After that, it will disappear from your device and someone else can borrow it.

PhDs and master's theses from students who have already graduated from UiS are archived by the Library and can be found at www.brage.bibsys.no

The Library also has a collection of movies, TV-series, periodicals and magazines. These are available on short-term loans. In Bjergsted you will find all kinds of music.

Why use the Library when searching for literature

Online resources

A visit to the Library, either the physical Library or through our web site, will pro-vide you with information of high quality.

The books and articles provided from the Library have been selected by experienced staff. We subscribe to databases, scientific journals and periodicals (physical and electronic) with high academic quality and scientific value.

The newest research is often published as articles in scientific journals online.

Librarians often hear that "I don’t use the Library because I find everything online". Well, even though you don’t physically need to be here, the Library is the one that provides for your access to these journals and databases.

Use the UiS wifi to get full access to all the online resources from your own computer.

When you use material provided from the Library in in your assignments and papers you can be assured that it comes from reliable sources. However, critical use of sources and correct referencing is an important part of all studies, and the Library offers courses designed to help you with this.

(Course literature)

Oria is the name of the Library's search engine. You find it on the Library's web page or through www.oria.no

A search in Oria will show you most of what the Library has, but the Library provides even more! Some of the data-bases are not searchable in Oria (For example databases within health, such as Cinahl). Direct access to the data-bases and a full list of databases that the Library subscribes to is available on the Library’s web page - choose "Scientific literature" on the front page.

Searching though Oria you will find scientific articles, books, e-books and so on provided by the Library. As men-tioned, the Library offers high quality information, compared to Google where quality cannot be guaranteed.

The map. Through "Locate" in Oria or uis.no/library/guide you will find a map that shows you where in the Library the book is.

Where is

Look it up in Oria.

Here you will see the availability of the book and where it is located in the Library. If there is an available e-book of the same title, Oria will let you know.

Books on the shelves are organized with numbers that refer to the subject (The Dewey system – more information at the last page). The letters behind the number often refer to the last name of the author. If you browse the shelves for your spe-cific topic, you might come across other relevant books as well.

In Norway, students usually spend a lot of money on their pensum books and compendia. Although we know how expensive the books can be, the Library only has a limited number of copies of course literature and some of them are not for loan outside the Library.

Some suggestions:• Team up with your fellow studentsand peacefully share the book.

• Obtain specific articles from theLibrary’s databases.• Scan the pages that you need.It is legal to scan or copy 15% of a book as long as it is for your personal use only.

And where is pensum?

If the book or article you search for is not found in the UiS Library’s collection, choose the tab "all libraries" in Oria. If you find the material here, at another Norwegian library, you can order it free of charge. If there are no results in "all libraries", you can email your request to [email protected]

If the book (or article) isn’t there

Touch the display to select language. Choose “loan”. Scan the barcode on your student card and put the book(s) on the desk in front of the display. Once you see the book title on the display the book is yours for 3 weeks!

No student card is needed for returns. Simply choose “return” on the display and put the books on the desk in front of the display. The display will tell you what to do, either to place the book into the box or on the shelf next to you.

You can also renew your loans through the machine’s touch display.

We have many magazines, periodicals and newspapers in many languages available. There are sofas, bean bags, board games and you can borrow an iPad at the front desk.

• Select print from your computer and collect the print at anycopy machine or printer in the Library.

• Use your student card to log on to the printer and select thefiles you want to print. Once you are logged on to the printer you can copy and scan as well.

Events Once in a while there are different events in the Library. For example exhibitions, debates, competitions or a language cafe. We also like to give away a free cup of coffee to the students now and then. Posters and our Facebook page will tell you what and when.
