National African American Read-In

The library joined thousands of organizations across the country and around the world by participating in the 19th African American Read-In. The African American Read-In is a project of the Black Caucus of the National Council of Teachers of English, designed to make literacy a significant part of Black History Month through the public appreciation of works by black authors. This event was the kick off to Black History Month. This free public event was sponsored by the Teen Advisory Group. The library hosted this event with very special guest readers:

My name is Beatheia Jackson and I’m a graduate of Norfolk State University with a Bachelor of Arts degree

in Psychology. I began my library work at the G.R. Little Library at Elizabeth City State University. I joined

the staff of the Pasquotank Camden Library in 2006.

Enthusiastically, I serve on several committees: Black History Month, One Year Celebration of new library,

Bookmobile Grant, and the newsletter committee. I have also attended several workshops such as: NC LIVE

Ready Reference Resources, NC LIVE Resource Training, and Preparing for the Digital Television

Transition. My position entails answering reference questions, giving tours, checking in/out computers, and

requesting interlibrary loans. I created a ready reference blog to answer frequently asked questions; this blog

can be found at http://infoser.pbwiki.com/Pasquotank%2BCamden%2BLibrary If you can’t find the answers

you’re looking for on my ready reference blog you can use our Ask A Question via email service. This

service allows patrons to have their questions answered within 48 hours.

I earned my Pharmacy Technician degree form Computer Dynamics Institute (CDI) and I am now a certified

pharmacy technician (CPhT). I am also licensed in the state of North Carolina as a pharmacy technician.

I find both of these positions challenging and enjoy helping and working with people.

If you have any questions, whether general or reference, do not hesitate to call me at 335-7536. You can also

email me your questions at [email protected]

I would like to thank all of you for relying on the Information Services staff to assist you in your computer,

reading, and reference needs.

Second Annual African-American History Event

The library hosted its Second Annual Famous First Black History Month Program on February 20, 2008. The

program was a tribute to Pasquotank and Camden counties Famous “First” African Americans.

The event began with Elizabeth City Councilman, Rickey King singing the African American spiritual

“Amazing Grace”. In full character, King explained the rough life of Moses Grandy through slavery and

freedom.

Our second guest speaker was Dr. Reginald Watson professor of Literature at East Carolina University. In

addition he is the first tenured African-American male teacher at that University. In his speech, Dr. Watson

explained the aftereffects of slavery that still lingers today. He centered his topic based on two inspirational

novels: “Beloved”, by Tony Morrison and “The Third Life of Grange Copeland”, by Alice Walker.
