BUILDING JOURNAL
Carl and his awesome LEGO Trainsfrom my first adventure inspired meto build something on rails. Drawingon my passion for dragons and theversatility of LEGO Train parts, Istarted to build. Once I had thechassis (called a train bogie) workedout, I was able to focus on myTragon’s unique characteristics:speedy, spiky, and fiery! What typeof Tragon was he going to be?Long or short claws? Fierce orfriendly? I had to create smoothlines and a cool color scheme, andmy Tragon was born!

BUILDING JOURNAL
Although the release of the Destructor is still verymuch on my mind, I’m always open to new ideas and
builds. I was intrigued by how widely Nabii had managedto take the design of his fighters while still followingthe Viper build rules. I think restrictions can sometimesfuel innovation and push you in unexpected directions.I’ll have to remember that in my future building!
Megs, I have the partsfor a new Transport-o-lux.I’ve done my part. Now it is
up to you to assemble it.

The gas station Are built for Gushas many iconic details: a cornershop, stacks of motor oil cans, a
jack, tools, street lamps, and gaspumps. His use of white with lightand dark blue for highlight colorscreates a nice clean look. Tileelements give it a ceramic feel, and all of the details add a senseof realism to the model.

Building Tip
Some larger LEGO parts can be usedin many ways, like these four curvedelements taken from a LEGO plane set.Used sideways, they make a perfecttank for this rockin’ gas truck.

BUILDING JOURNAL
Are has built his tanker truck with a lot of iconic details that youwould find in a real one: a long wheel base, a beefy body, smokestacks, and a large fuel tank with a hazardous materials symbol onits rear bumper. He’s combined these traditional elements with somedetails you’d find on a hot rod: a supercharged, exposed engine anda sleek nose. This cool idea gives the impression of speed. Maybe Ishould soup up my Idea Truck, too!

BUILDING JOURNAL
Arjan and I talked a lot as werebuilt his ferry. He told me helikes to put lots of details intoevery model at the beginningof the build. That way, he cantell if it will turn out the wayhe wants. Most of his LEGOmodels are quite large, but theyare all minifigure scale and havea lot of functions that are foundon a real vessel. I think hismodels are incredible!

BUILDING JOURNAL
Arjan is partial to industrial machines, like ships used for fishing ortransportation, that will get dirty, beaten up, and rusty. He oftenbuilds replica models, using references images from the Internet. When he finds something he wants to build, he looks for detailedplans or technical drawings so he can re-create it at a 1:40 scale.

BUILDING JOURNAL
Barney has a lot of cool
details in his models, allwell suited to a tropicalisland. His use of slopesto build up a rock face isa great way to landscape.Combining part of anold ship to make a deckand stairway gives it theramshackle look of flotsomand jetsam. If I build apirate island, I´ll make sureit is made of objects thathave washed ashore!

Barney s ships are amazing! He adds accent colors, likewhite and black, to break
up the brown of the shipand add interest to whatcould otherwise be a plainarea. The string rigginghelps to hold the mastsand spars up, and it makesthe ship look much morerealistic. The string is notofficial LEGO string, and Barney also made his ownsails out of cloth. MaybeI´ll try that!

that’s fun and whimsical. She told me how she likesto build scenes and create stories for her minifigures. This brings them to life. Snugburg is cleverly built ona single 48 × 48 stud LEGO base plate and is a greatexample of how you can build an entire city incorporatingdifferent looks into each side within a condensed space. The stonework of the castle blends seamlessly into theTudor buildings. I should keep these techniques in mindfor the next addition to my Idea Lab!

BUILDING JOURNAL
As we wandered through Tommy´s epic movie set, I felt like I was ona real Hollywood studio lot! Everything in it is exactly as you’d expect—proper movie cameras, lights, rigging, and green screens! He taught mea lot about the process of filming a movie; I could always use some ofthese techniques on a smaller scale to create my own studio to shootsome movies. It was super cool to be filmed as an extra in a movie, too. Will I end up
on the cutting-room floor or make it to final cut? Only time will tell!

Tyler´s models are out ofthis world. He told me that, for him, the more unusualthe idea, the better. Hisprocess usually begins withmaking sketches or findingimages that inspire him. Thenhe starts building—finding thedefining features of the modeland fitting them all together. For his post-apocalyptic world, muted colors like greys andtans create a dingy, dusty, and broken end-of-civilization

BUILDING JOURNAL
Marco has created a very cool world! He often finds inspiration in online buildincontests. Before he starts building anystructures, he uses minifigures to comeup with new characters, which areessential to his models. He thinks aboutwhat kind of environment they would livein, like snow, mountains, or swamplands, and considers the elevation. After hehas built the terrain, he imagines the kindof buildings that would exist there. He
plans it all out in his head and then buildseach model to suit its environment. WhenI build, I should consider not only thebuildings but their surroundings and howthey flow with each other.
Building TipYou can add more rubber bands tothe catapult to increase its power, but
adding too many could break it apart.

SlopesUse slopes for making roofs, scales for creatures, and any anglededges.
Bows and ArchesBows and arches add curves and gentle contours to your model.
BricksStandard LEGO bricks are great for the main structure of a model.
Three LEGO plates are one LEGO
brick high.
Five LEGO plates built sideways
have the same width as a brickthat is two studs wide.
The stud reversal technique letsyou build in opposite directions.
Plates and TilesPlates are a good way to give your model detail. Tiles create smooth,
stud-free surfaces for a sharp, clean look.
Jumper plates allow you to“jump” one half stud out ofthe normal system.
Clips and BarsCombine clips and bars to create hinges. Hinges allow you to build atany angle on a model.

Building with a Slope TransitionThis is one way of creating a smooth transitionwhen placing slope bricks at different angles.
Maintaining the Correct Spacing
Sideways-building bricks (shown in tan) have studson the top and on the side. Placing two layers ofplates between each row of these bricks allows youto keep the correct spacing as you build sideways. This also works for LEGO Technic pieces.
Arch Geometry Several of the bow and arch pieces t insideeach other.
