Iinwardlybegantobackpedalwhen
shevehementlydeclaredthather
motherwaswonderfulbutthatshehatedherfather.Shethenbegantotell
meastorythats1llhauntsmymemory
twentyyearslater.Herfatherand
motherweredivorcedbecauseshe
wasntaboy!Myyoungmindscreamed,
What!Seeingthelookonmyfaceshe
musthavefelttheneedtoexplain
becausesheelaboratedbysaying
somethingtotheeffectof,Yes,itstrue.
Myfatherneverlovedmymotherand
toldherthatifshehadagirlhewas
history.Hemadegoodonthatpromise,
andinthewakeofhisleaving,a
woundedbrokenfamilyremained!
FastforwardeightyearsandIamnow
si=ngonthebedofafiveyearoldboy
thatIbabysit.AsItuckhimin,thatsame
brokennesshauntsthoseliPlebrown
eyes.Hismommyjusttoldhimtheday
beforethatshedoesntlovehisdaddyanymoreandthattheyarege=nga
divorce.Helooksatmeandmyheart
breaks.Jennie,Hewhispers.Ilove
daddy,whycantmommy?
Sigh.Icouldrepeatthissadstoryover
andoveragain.TheolderIhavegoPen,
themoreprevalentthisissuehas
become.Idontknowhowmany1mesI
havesatwithafriendorcomforteda
childwhoseworldhadbeenshaPeredby
oneword:DIVORCE.IwishIcouldsay
thatitonlyhappensintheworld,but
recentsta1s1csclaimthatdivorceis
moreprevalentamongChris1ans.How
canthisbe?
leaseunderstand,Iknowthatthere
aresitua1onsthatmayrequireaman
andwomantoseparateanddivorce,
suchasadulteryorabuse.Yet,inallmy
yearsofworkingwithChris1anfamilies,thosecircumstancesarefewandfar

Asafather,withonesonincollegeandanotherfinishingouthersenioryearofhighschool,lookingback,IchuckleasIthinkhowI
wasamongthosewhodidntbelieve1memovedasquicklyasIwas
oentolditwould.Iwassonaive.Asthe1medoesfly,hopefullywe
arecarefultogatherandpreservethepreciousmemoriesalongthe
way.Whenourkidsweresmaller,theylovedtoplaydressupand
performtheoriginalsongsandplaystheywouldcreate.SueandI
wouldsitastheaudienceandlaughalongandjustenjoytheir
crea1vityandtheexuberancetheyshowedinmakingussmile.
WhentheywerealiPleolder,Ihadtheblessingof1meandenergy
tocoachthemonmanyoftheirsportsteams.Ilovedteampicture
day.Itseemsthatwefilledacoupleofmantleswithalltheteam
picturesfromsomanysportsteamsandcheerleadingsquads.My
suchanastoundingrate?Iamnotan
expert,buthereisaGodgivenhunch:

faith.Some1mes,Ilookbackovertheirlives,astheymovecloserto
becomingadultsthemselves,andsadnesstriestotakeholdofmy
thoughts.ThenIstopandthankGodforthechildrenhegaveSueandme.Heblessedandentrustedusasparents,andmeastheir
father;askingofmeonlytotrustHim.
Beingadadisntalwayseasy,butitsalwaysrewarding.Asa
father,Ivemademistakes.ButIknowGodnevermakesmistakes.
HelovedhisSonlikehelovesme.Andso,hechosemetobethe
fatherofmychildren.Despitehowwemaywanttothinkotherwise,
1mewillflyby.Andthroughtheblurofitall,yourelewithawide-
opentreasurechestofcherishedmemoriestosithrough.Thetrick
