Abraham was called by God when he lived in a place called Ur to move to a land that was promised to be his.

God promised to make a great nation out of Abraham even though he had no children at the age of 75.

ABRAHAM’S CALL

“And I will make of you a great nation, and I will bless you and make your name great, so that you will be a blessing.” Genesis 12:2

A covenant is an agreement. After many years, Abraham

still had no children. God spoke again to

Abraham, telling him not to be afraid. He would do everything he promised he would do and give him a son.

THE COVENANT

“After these things the word of the Lord came to Abram in a vision: ‘Fear not, Abram; I am your shield; your reward shall be very great.’” Genesis 15:1 Practi

Abraham questioned God because he did not have any children of his own.

God told Abraham to look at the stars and try to count them. That is how many

descendants he would have.“And he brought him outside and said, ‘Look toward the heaven, and number the stars, if you are able to number them.’ And he said to him, ‘So shall your offspring be.’”

Abraham believed God. Then God promised to give him a land for his offspring.

Abraham again questioned how God would do this.

God then made a covenant with Abraham. He then sacrificed animals to prove that he would keep his word and give Abraham a son along with land. “On that day the

Lord made a covenant with Abram…” Genesis 15:18

After waiting 25 years, God gave Abraham a son: Isaac

One day, God tested Abraham and told him to take Isaac and sacrifice him on a mountain. Abraham obeyed and took Isaac to the mountain.

THE SACRIFICE

“He said, ‘ Take your son, your only son Isaac, whom you love, and go to the land of Moriah, and offer him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains of which I shall tell you.’” Genesis 22:2

Abraham took Isaac to Moriah and prepared to sacrifice him.

Before he could, God stopped Abraham. He told him that he knew that Abraham trusted him because Abraham did not disobey God.

Then God provided a ram for Abraham to sacrifice instead of his son.

Thus Abraham became the father of Israel. “And Abraham lifted up his eyes

and looked, and behold, behind him was a ram, caught in a thicket by his horns. And Abraham went and took the ram and offered it up as a burnt offering instead of his son.” Genesis 22:13

After Isaac had grown older, Abraham sent his servant to his family’s land to get a wife for Isaac.

God directed the servant to a well where he would find Rebekah.

After the servant told Rebekah and her family all that God had done, Rebekah left her family to go and marry Isaac.

THE LINE CONTINUES

“Then Isaac brought her into the tent of Sarah his mother and took Rebekah, and she became his wife, and he loved her…” Genesis 24:67a

There was a famine in the land where Isaac lived.

Because of this, Isaac traveled to a land called Gerar to live.

God appeared to Isaac and told him to not be afraid. He would make a covenant (an agreement) with Isaac like the covenant he made with Abraham.

ISAAC’S COVENANT

“Sojourn in this land, and I will be with you and will bless you, for to you and to your offspring I will give all these lands, and I will establish the oath that I swore to Abraham your father.” Genesis 26:3

Isaac did not trust God and was afraid that the men might kill him in order to have his wife.

ISAAC’S MISTAKE

“When the men of the place asked him about his wife, he said, ‘She is my sister,’ for he feared to say, ‘My wife,’ thinking, ‘lest the men of the place should kill me because of Rebekah,’ because she was attractive in appearance.’” Genesis 26:7

One day, the king of Gerar looked out and saw Isaac and Rebekah laughing. He then knew that they were married.

The king rebuked Isaac and told everyone not to touch Rebekah.

After a while, Isaac became very great and the king told Isaac to leave his land. God then directed him to a place called Beersheba.

Isaac continued the line of Abraham, and in the process, he continued a nation.

“So Abimelech called Isaac and said, ‘Behold, she is your wife. How then could you say, ‘She is my sister’?” Isaac said to him, ‘Because I thought, ‘Lest I did because of her.’” Genesis 26:9

everything from his father. He had what was called a birthright.

A birthright was a status (being the oldest son) and he was going to get the best of everything his father

had to offer when his father died.

After Esau came back from hunting, Isaac realized what had happened but could not change what had happened. Jacob fled to Haran because Esau wanted to kill him.
