DEAR ALUMNI AND SUPPORTERS,Have you ever stopped to think of the multiplier effect created by Leadership Memphis? Well, let’s take just a moment and do that. For every dollar you invest in LM it isn’t used once. It isn’t used to go toward fixing “X” or to solving “Y”. For every dollar you invest in LM, that dollar continues to roll over and over through the many lives Leadership Memphis prepares and mobilizes for the good of the whole community. When you invest in Leadership Memphis, you are investing in the lives of people who, in turn, will be investing their lives and resources in others across the greater Memphis area for years to come. For example, graduates of our Executive, FastTrack, and Grassroots programs – about 200 per year – go on to serve more effectively on nonprofit boards, organize fundraisers, lead volunteer initiatives, and philanthropically support hundreds of charitable

causes throughout the Memphis area. Through their efforts – big and small – year after year - we are a stronger community. When you invest in Leadership Memphis you are investing in our efforts to increase post-secondary attainment; changing the lives of the 7,000 juniors and seniors in Shelby County Schools, as well as the 1,000 adults we are working to re-enroll in college. And yes, some of these individuals will be taking four-year pathways and others will be pursuing vocational and technical careers. And they in turn will contribute to the economic and civic vitality of the Memphis area making us a stronger community year after year after year. You have many choices when it comes to investing in nonprofit causes. I would argue none have quite the same multiplier effect as Leadership Memphis. We are in the midst of our annual alumni sponsorship campaign and ask for your financial support. Support that will have a lifetime multiplier effect for generations to come.Memphis is counting on us. I’m counting on you. Sincerely,

President/CEO

On September 4, friends, partners, and staff from the Memphis Talent Dividend convened at the University Center on the University of Memphis campus for their quarterly meeting. MTD Director Bernice Butler welcomed over 60 attendees to the event, including Co-Chairs Betty Sue McGarvey from the Baptist College of Health Sciences and Tomeka Hart from Teach for America, Leadership Memphis CEO and President David Williams, keynote speaker Mike Krause, U of M Provost Dr. Karen Weddle-West, and Graduate Memphis education partners. Upon arrival to the meeting, each person identified themselves with one of three groups: high school students’ education, African-American male achievement, and adult learners. After the initial welcome, the

crowd split into three breakout groups to discuss their particular topic. Leadership Memphis AmeriCorps VISTA team members Alex “Ace” Brooks, Aerial Ozuzu, and Robin Walker led the discussions for each group, tackling issues and concerns about their specific education groups. After group discussion, MTD welcomed Mike Krause, the Executive Director for Gov. Bill Haslam’s Drive to 55 campaign and ambitious Tennessee Promise bill. Mr. Krause, a decorated war veteran and native Tennessean, spoke at length about what the TN Promise bill aims to achieve. The bill promises that every high school senior who registers will receive a free 2-year technical school or community college education for free. Mr. Krause stressed the importance of education in Tennessee, demonstrating that our college attainment rate falls directly in line with both our public health and incarceration rates. While currently on the low end of the 50 states, Mr. Krause aims, along with Gov. Haslam, to improve this through their Drive to 55 campaign. Drive to 55 hopes to have 55% of adults in Tennessee reach college attainment by 2025. After Mr. Krause’s engaging and informative talk, MTD Director Bernice Butler updated attendees on the progress within MTD which includes securing $17,500 in MTD donations from local colleges and partners. Finally, Erica Johnson and Don Jones presented Graduate Memphis a check for $5,000 on behalf of education partner, Belhaven University. A huge thanks to Erica and Don for this generous and welcome donation to continue to fund Memphis Talent Dividend.

2014 ALUMNI HOLIDAY PARTYDECEMBER 3 | 6-8 PM | NATIONAL CIVIL RIGHTS MUSEUM

Our 2014 Alumni Holiday Party will be held Wednesday, December 3, at The National Civil Rights Museum from 6 – 8 p.m. The holiday extravaganza is expected to draw more than 600 Leadership Memphis alumni, corporate sponsors, and community partners. Each year, party attendees are asked to bring non-perishable food items to be donated to the Mid-South Food Bank, a tradition started at the 2011 event when about 1,000 cans of food were collected. Let’s see if we can set a record for how many cans we are able to collect. We also are in need of volunteers to assist with registration, setting up and breaking down, and greeting guests. Any alumni

that are able to step up and help out, please email Jared Bulluck at [email protected]. In addition to having NCRM exhibits open to guests, we will also have multicultural food from a variety of local restaurants, a silent auction, and open bar. You can find more details about the vendors soon on our website. Our annual party is free to attend but we do ask you to RSVP. Email us at [email protected] to let us know if you and a guest are able to attend! A big thanks to our Annual Holiday Party presenting sponsors: F & H Solutions, Prodigi Arts and Tactical Magic.
