Alvaro Pisoni did a magnificent job of organizing and coordinating this week’s visit by the Open World delegates to Colo-rado. The visitors kept to a busy schedule and enjoyed the openness and friendliness. The Russians were from the City of Ivano-vo, the textile capital of Russian, but also know as the City of Brides due to the many eligible young ladies who work there.

CLUB NEWS
• Steve Brown is excited about a potential International Project at a deaf school in the Dominican Republic.
• President-elect Lindy again challenged club members to bring at least one guest to a meeting by the end of this club year. So far, six guests have attended invit-ed by five Rotarians.
• Ben Martin will be presenting a program on “Great Moments with Mr. Lin-coln” at our meeting on April 10. See Below.
Great Moments with Mr Lincoln Please join us on 10 April 2014, one day after the 149th Anniversary of the end of The Civil War, as we pay tribute to Abraham Lincoln. This humble, self-educated man from the prairie is the Father of our 2nd Founding. He was the man who preserved the Nation our Found-ers made, revived the Principles our Founders asserted in The Decla-ration, and completed the vision our Founders had of what the United States of America was supposed to be – ‘…a new nation, conceived in Liberty and dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal…!’ This would be a great time to bring a spouse or progeny with whom you may share this great American Story.

TODAY IN HISTORY Waves of Japanese troops assaulted the Philippine Islands at the outset of World War II, steadily overpowering Filipino and American defenders. The U.S. forces com-manded by General Douglas MacArthur fought back but were short on supplies and vastly outnumbered. Surrender was inevi-table. MacArthur received personal instructions to proceed to Australia without his soldiers, where he could organize a counterattack. He refused to leave his hungry, desperate men behind until President Roosevelt is-sued an order he could not ignore. The heartbroken general slipped past the Japa-nese navy by boar and plane to reach Aus-tralia. Once there, on March 20, 1942, he made a solemn pledge to his men back in the Philippines: “I shall return.” In April, unable to hold out any longer, some 75,000 American and Filipino troops on the Bataan Peninsula surrendered to the Japanese—the largest mass surrender in American history. The captors beat and murdered many POWs during the infamous 65-mile Bataan Death March to prison camps. The Japanese also imprisoned thou-sands of American and other Allied civil-ians living in the Philippines. By the summer of 1942, the United States had launched a counteroffensive. For two and half years, Allied forces fought their way across the Pacific, island by island. On October 20, 1944, MacArthur finally waded back onto the Philippines’ shores to make good on his pledge and liber-ate the islands.

Contentious Issues You can often get a glimpse into the mindset of an era by looking at how people conducted themselves. The original members of the first Rotary Club felt that fellowship and goodwill was so important that they in-formally resolved to take steps to avoid any risk to their friendships, banning the dis-cussion of topics that might have created controversy and hurt feelings. “The 1905 members of the Rotary Club of Chicago, so valued the friend-ship of their fellow-members that they put a ban upon religious and po-litical discussions, fearing that they might become disturbing factors, and they were richly rewarded for their foresight. There was plenty of dynamite in questions which might have been raised; but they were not raised. The formula was very simple; it read, ‘GO about your common tasks together, avoid discussions of dissentious subjects, and your re-ward will be friendship.’ The formula was worthy of adoption in much wider circles.” (Paul Harris, This Rotarian Age, page 59).

ANNIVERSARIES
INTERNATIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES OF A ROTARIAN
As an international organization, Rotary offers each member unique op-portunities and responsibilities unlike those of other groups one might join. Although each Rotarian has first responsibility to uphold the obligations of citizenship of his or her own country, membership in Rotary enables Ro-tarians to take a somewhat different view of international affairs. In the early 1950s a Rotary philosophy was adopted to describe how a Rotarian might think on a global basis. Here is what it said: "A world-minded Rotari-an: • looks beyond national patriotism and considers himself as sharing re-
sponsibility for the advancement of international understanding, goodwill and peace; • resists any tendency to act in terms of national or racial superiority; • seeks and develops common grounds for agreement with peoples of other lands; • defends the rule of law and order to preserve the liberty of the individual so that he may
enjoy freedom of thought, speech and assembly, and freedom from persecution, ag-gression, want and fear;
• supports action directed toward improving standards of living for all peoples, realizing that poverty anywhere endangers prosperity everywhere;
• upholds the principles of justice for mankind; • strives always to promote peace between nations and prepares to make personal sacri-
fices for that ideal; • urges and practices a spirit of understanding of every other man's beliefs as a step to-
ward international goodwill, recognizing that there are certain basic moral and spiritual standards which will ensure a richer, fuller life."
That is quite an assignment for any Rotarian to practice in thoughts and actions!

A GARY MERAZ TRUE STORY
A couple approached the Canada-U.S. border cross-ing. The customs agent asked “Purpose of visit?” The wife said “We’re going to a wedding.” “Are you carrying any weapons—knives, guns?” he asked.
“No!” she said. “It’s not that kind of wedding.”
