THE LAMB 2015Editors’ Letter...“THE LAMB”: The Editors’ Tribute to the Students of GSIS

The mandate of “THE LAMB” is to call out the greatness from within the souls of children. “Lambs” signify innocence within the many passages of The Word, as for example, in Isaiah:“The wolf shall dwell with the lamb, and the leopard shall lie down with the kid; and the calf and the young lion and the fatling together, and a little child shall lead them” - (Isaiah 11:6)

One can discern a clear, compelling reference here to the Lord’s kingdom, and the state of peace and innocence therein. The “wolf” denotes those who are against innocence; and the “lamb,” those who are in innocence. And within the ‘little child’ lies the majesty and magnitude of leadership so crucial to the healing of our wounded planet.

The aim of this publication is to honour the inspirations and aspirations of our students, who are being guided thus: connect to communicate, communicate to connect ~ with all the possibilities that life has to offer, to make us respond to the fire within!

Students are encouraged to release their thoughts from a state of ‘active awareness’: where they have to keep their minds open and stay alert to possibilities, for we live in an ocean of ideas awaiting awakening. Creativity is encouraged to emerge from a fountainhead that generates the genesis of play, passion, and purpose in a quest for that which reflects the pinnacle of what it means to be an exemplary being.

In the context of their unfolding intellectual evolution, we encourage our students to manifest an undiminished joy towards life, beatific serenity against all challenges, and irreproachable values that declare their integrity in staying true to a peerless sense of honour.

Our young littérateurs have been encouraged to write so that each paragraph exhibits its own integrity of content and structure. Quite deliberately, no one has used an enthusiastic scalpel to carve away their expressiveness … because we do not wish to see them live lives of ‘quiet desperation’ nor of desperate quietness! They must speak, and write, and make their mark, never by force, but by the force of their ideas!

“THE LAMB” is thus a rich compilation of impetual, original voices that exude the radiances and cadences of students expressing themselves in print. Beyond that, we are audience to a dimension of the warmth and vulnerability within the metabolism of young minds in movement ~ with creative urges that aim to cast a lambent light on campus evolution.

Enjoy!

“Reading and writing, like everything else, improve with practice. And, of course, if there are no young readers and writers, there will shortly be no older ones. Literacy will be dead, and democracy - which many believe goes hand in hand with it - will be dead as well.”

- Margaret Atwood

The Frightening and Heavenly TreasureThe 21st of December, it was freezing cold but all my friends were manic for a stupid rumour about a treasure in a tribal forest. I was really scared, anyhow decided to go along with my friends.

We had to take a speed boat to reach there as it was an island. As soon as we had arrived on the mystic forest, I was literally shivering with fear. One of my friends opened a bag and he took out some weird clothing. I was astonished and pale with fear when he said we have to disguise as tribal people in their clothing. We all wore it and soon we heard voices coming towards us. We tied the boat to a banyan tree and rushed to the other side. We had a map which showed that for the treasure we had to go to the other end of the forest. There was only one way for reaching there which was through the heart of the forest. We strolled briskly towards our destination. As we moved two branches that were blocking our view as well as our way ahead, we had a glimpse of a campfire around which many tribal people were dancing. There was a large dead tiger that was kept on a table made of bones. The tiger was probably kept there as a feast for the tribal people.

While running she did not see the car coming towards her. The car was in such a great speed and it hit her. This all happened in a fraction of a second in front of her friend’s eyes. When Sharon was taken to the hospital, she was declared brain-dead by the doctors. All of her dreams ended in smoke.

The news of Sharon’s death spread like wildfire. Sharon’s parents were happy because her grandmother’s operation had been successful but they did not know that a tragic news was awaiting them. Seeing the body of their daughter, they were shocked and speechless. Gripped with pain and grief Sharon’s grandmother who had just recovered lost her life after listening to the news of her granddaughter’s death. Their lives were full of incidental misfortunes. They felt that fate was unsympathetic to them and they had no other alternative but to submit to fate.

Even we at times have no other alternative except submitting to fate. So the next time life screams, listen and don’t ignore because may be life wants to tell you something.

- Ms. Muskaan Deswal, IX C

It had a disgusting smell that almost made us puke. We quickly moved forward through the forest when a tall and well-built man suddenly jumped down from the branch above us. He caught two of our friends which made us use our plan in a terrible situation like this. We quickly filled our fists with chilli powder that was in our bag and threw it with a great force on that man’s face after which he fell down sneezing and screaming. That moment all of us ran fast as cheetahs. As we reached a great distance from that place, we checked the map to confirm if we were going towards the treasure.

We proceeded with no more delay in the correct direction when we saw weird plants as well as insects. One was such an odd plant that it almost swallowed my friend with its thorny mouth. We were all really very frightened when we saw a snake chasing a wild dog whose barking seemed like screaming. Ignoring everything, we had finally arrived at our destination but we could not see any gold or diamonds. On the map, there was a large W that signified the treasure. So we all searched for a large W. At last, one of the dumbest friends shouted W. We all looked at him with a question mark on our faces. We turned to where he was looking and we saw large coconut trees that were crossed with each other forming a really huge or rather an enormous W. We ran towards the W and we saw a chocolaty heaven behind the trees. There were about a billion chocolates and a waterfall of melted chocolate. We all thought of it as a treasure for us and started munching on chocolates. But we heard voices coming towards us again and so we rushed back to our boats and departed for the city. This was a wonderful experience but a really scary one also. If I get one more map of treasure with a W on it, I would be the happiest to find the delicious and mouth-watering chocolaty treasure.

Outside narrator

Chorus

3 Witches

Narrator: We are not at old Trafford cheering the champions of England, Manchester United, darling of every heart, taking on the most flamboyant Barcelona in the champions’ league finals. Nor at the red fort in Delhi where the world’s largest democracy is displaying its pomp and glory. O..no…Nor in the portico of Thaj Mahal watching the ill fated romance of Prince Charles and Princess Diana.

We are at the modest home of the most celebrated, the most illustrious…the one and only one crazy, cranky genius William Shakespeare..

Alfieri, Shakespeare’s Lawyer: Well… He was the rarest of my rare clients. Most celebrated from Bollywood to Hollywood…most well known from Arctic to Antartic….has visited the depths of human minds…created the noblest ….created the meanest. He walked tall…entertaining, educating, enlightening the countless…Did he deserve this fate?..I was powerless to see my client being carried by his own creations.

Willy: You could’ve pulled ’im baack., could ’ve hung on to whatever was available of him. In the end I only watched it with his friends and family… well about my last sight of him… yuck… yada yada ..I saw horror in his eyes.

Time: Midnight

Sh (getting up with a sudden jerk): Oh! …you beauty…Hamlet standing hesitantly …undecided …Claudius murdering .…Hamlet to be mad or not to be ..rude with Gertrude ..What a subject!

Linda (getting up): I am pissed off …Is there any end to this? Every night is noisy….crazy stuff…What?.. You have no common sense…This is no genius… this is sheer madness. I do not understand this…

Sh: You understand nothing . Great ideas visit us in weird time…they appear in dreams from nowhere..I can sense fame…. … something big is coming…

Linda : I can sense your nonsense…

Sh: I can smell glory

Linda: I can smell a piece of shit

Sh: Heaven and glory are near

Linda: Hell with your glory … stop being, crazy.Sh: No, dear…be patient…

Linda: Stop being a kid… stop dreaming, you loser…

THE LAMB 31

Sh: We shall grow big... We shall see the sky sparkling with diamonds…I can sense the glory…I can see pigs flying..

Linda: Be responsible…how many times am I to remind you? You are a married man… you are a dad of 3. You are growing older..be big before something big hits us…. Stop being a school boy.

Sh: Wha-t?

Linda: Be big..before the big hits you…you are growing older…you miser…

Sh: It’s true we are growing wiser.

Linda: Then why behave like a naughty boy?

Sh: I see them all again…Wha…taa?

Linda: Stop your wha..t!

Sh: Linda…. There has to be a child in everybody… ours is to keep ourselves young…if you carry your childhood with you, you never become older….

Linda: Why don’t you open your eyes and see for yourself?

Sh: I see a lot when I close my eyes…

Linda: Oh (impatient) You have to be responsible at this age… you are a husband… you are a dad…

Sh: Yea…I am a husband…yea I am a dad… I am a kid too… Haven’t you heard that ‘child is the father of man’?

Linda: Don’t provoke me… you are what you are… I can’t take nonsense for long…There is no rule for a fool in this world.

Sh: True … very true, Linda… a fool too is a wise man.

Linda: Don’t spoil the beautiful… peaceful night…

Tommy Sh (peeping out of his blanket): Your quarrels have no end… you care for neither the young nor the old who are sleeping in this house. The entire world is sleeping, you crazy ones are fighting as if you live for ever…

Sh: Dad… not the entire world is sleeping… when it’s day here in India, it’s night for Bush and his dog in America…

Tommy: Are you talking about that warlord in penguin’s skin?

Sh: Yea, the warlord..

Linton Shakespeare ( Sh’s son):O.. George Bush.. he’s as courageous as Saddam Hussein of Mongolia..Friend to Bahamas of the US and A.

Sh: Stop, you faggot…

Linton; Dad…every genius starts as a moron…

Sh: You young idiot…

Linda: Where were you my child last night?

Linton : That's so long ago, I don't remember

Linda: Will I see you tonight here?

Linton: I never make plans that far ahead.

Linda: A chip of the old block..I have to deal with two crazy men in this home.

Last scene--- Shakespeare confronted by Hamlet’s ghost.

Sh: All the world is a mental asylum …All the men and women are cousins of Hamlet.

THE LAMB 32

Who a…re youuu?

Ghost: I am Hamlet 007 from Hell

Sh: The mad fella I created?

Ghost.: Yup.

Sh: Why are you here?

Ghost: To take you up…up……up…

Sh: Hey…chill…will explain…No.. you explain

Ghost: You have made me a mad fella in your play…you made name, fame, royalty money at my expense…Shakespeare created Hamlet they say …what’ve I got? Entry into dictionary as synonym for madness..

Sh: Cool down, dude…have patience..

Ghost: My time’s up…we are in extra time..I’ve to hurry back to hell.

WS: No…I beg you weird creature..I have not done anything wrong…

Ghost: Foul is fair, fair is foul…I will make you history today

(Sh defends himself from Ghost’s attack. Sword fighting follows Ghost stabs Shakespeare and runs away)

Sh (on the ground): You brute….to be or not to be is not the question anymore…O sweet death. Where the hell is my life? O.o..That sucker stole my life ..after all, tomorrow is another day (dies)

Alfieri: You can shed tears that he is gone, or you can smile because he has lived. You can close your eyes and pray that he'll come back,or you can open your eyes and see all he's left.Your heart can be empty because you can't see him,or you can be full of the love he shared. You can turn your back on tomorrow and live yesterday, or you can be happy for tomorrow because of yesterday. You can cry and close your mind, be empty and turn your back.or you can do what he'd want:open your eyes, raise your mind, smile, love and go on and on and on….Farewell…goodbye..

“We see and understand things not as they are, but as we are”

One thing that makes life on earth very special and unique is the very fact that each and every living being looks at the same thing differently with their own perspective and justification to that. No two living beings think in the same manner, they don’t behave or react similarly either.

Nobody can judge or see reality as itself but everyone have their own original versions of it. Each one’s discretion, definition of truth and reality is the limited edition of their own thinking. What you see as reality is a reflection of yourself and your thoughts.

A Humbling Experience: Visit to ‘Arise and Shine’

It does not mean that one has to be a billionaire to be charitable. Even simple actions like feeding a poor man for a day or teaching a poor child are acts of charity. Every person can do his / her own bit, and it would bring about some difference in another person’s life. Also, acts of charity should not be trumpeted about, they should be done from the heart and not for the publicity or other commercial purposes. The best form of charity is the one in which the identity of the donor remains anonymous.

During the last weekend, we had the privilege to visit a charity home for kids who are underprivileged. The experience was unique and rather gratifying. The journey began just like any other journey would; everybody’s energy level was extremely high. Everyone seemed to be excited about the trip. When we arrived at the destination, we were given a warm welcome. We were speechless for a moment seeing those poor kids. We realized how lucky we were. The petty things we complained about seemed insignificant when we saw those kids smiling about whatever little they had to smile about. They had no option but to keep living their lives hoping for a breakthrough. We realized how privileged and fortunate we were and vowed not to grumble about the small problems we faced in our day-to-day lives. That is when we realized that when we look at things we do not have we will never be satisfied but instead of looking at what others have more than us we must look at what we have more than others. If those kids could find a way to smile, why can’t we?

We should always be thankful to the Almighty for whatever he has given us. If we can share the little we have with the underprivileged, their smile would be our reward, life will become worth living then. This is what our charity trip taught us.

The special moments of the journey are still stuck in our minds. We enjoyed every simple precious moment. We were invited to play football, actually it was not a ball but crumbled paper. We recalled the moments when we used to argue with our parents

THE LAMB 34

for not giving us the latest ball. We fed them with biscuits and cakes, which brought the innocent smiles on their faces. After a while we played a traditional game, which none of us knew. One of the children came to us and explained the game to us. We felt the game was quite good and easy to play. On the way back to school, we all reflected on the journey and we wished we had one more chance to visit the beautiful home again.

14th of September every year is observed as the ‘Hindi Diwas.’ All the students who have taken Hindi as their second language came together this year too to put up a wonderful show and celebrated ‘Hindi Diwas.’ The programme began with a prayer and an oath in Hindi by Ms. Nandini Kohli of grade 8. The lighting of the lamp was done by the Chief Guest, Mrs. Anila Kalyan, followed by a song invocating goddess Saraswati by grades 7 and 8 students along with the Hindi teacher, Mr. K. Vijaya Kumar. The welcome address was given by Ms. Gayathry Vidya of grade 12 IB followed by a speech by Ms. Jasleen Kaur Gandhi of grade 9 on the importance of Hindi Diwas and why we celebrate the official language. Later, Master Yash Singhania, Ms. Arti Chudasama and Ms. Aayushi Rajan Vadalia gave a beautiful power point presentation on how the language of Hindi has crossed the barriers of our nation and is being used as an international language in counties like Fiji, Surinam, USA, UAE and other countries. At the end of the presentation, the students gave information on Hindi courses offered in GSIS at various levels and boards. After this beautiful presentation, girls of grades 9 and 10 presented a skit. The title of the skit was ‘Basha Bhagini.’ ‘Basha Bhagini’ is a story of all vernacular languages vying with each other for supremacy. But at the end, everyone realizes that they are the children of one mother, Sanskrit. They realize their mistake and promise to be united forever. The skit promoted unity and integrity amongst languages. The vote of thanks was given by Master Harshit Agrawal, a student of grade 11 and the anchoring was done by Master Gunish Singh Chawla and Ms. Meetali Gupta of Higher Secondary section. In between the events, with his witty questions and riddles, Master Suresh Sow entertained the audience and kept the momentum going. Special thanks to the School Management, Coordinators and the faculty members for providing a platform for the students to project their talents through these programmes.

At the end of the programme, the Chief Guest on the occasion, Mrs. Anila Kalyan spoke about the importance of Hindi and the importance of speaking one’s own mother tongue. She gave examples of those countries who feel proud to speak in their own language than other language. In her speech, she reiterated to promote Hindi as our national language and feel proud about speaking the language.

Here’s the full stop to the AVIATION CHALLENGE!Oh gosh! I miss those days of having breakfast at 7:30 a.m., lunch at 11:00 a.m. and dinner at 5:30 p.m. You must be wondering what weird meal timings are these… but these aren’t weird timings, these are NASA timings.

That Mach 3, Jolly Rogers team consisted only of the Shepherdians: Sachin, Vanshika, Manav, Sanjay, Srosha, Archit, Sandesh, Neeha, Vishal and me, Rijul. How can I forget our crew trainer: Erin Clover Shey. She was the sweetest and the most helpful person. She encouraged us at all times: whether it was drinking two glasses of water per meal, drowning in that tank, climbing the 32 feet tall pole or screaming louder than the “Pukin Dogs.” Credits to her and our team spirit, we won the Admiral’s Cup.

Those F-18 simulations were the best: Vishal and Sachin, our Top Gun winners! Next was the Area 51, which developed or rather enhanced the team spirit in all of us. Manav, our patrol leader, was always the first one to try those (Area 51) tasks and motivate us all the way through. Sachin led our patrol line, watching out for Juicy Fruit’s threats. Srosha, the assistant patrol leader, gave great ideas to complete the challenges. Sandesh’s brain modified them, especially that final day’s patrolling map. Jokes from Archit and Vishal kept us entertained throughout. A special thanks to Vanshika and her camera (actually, not much of a camera)

THE LAMB 36

for the music and the pictures in which all of us clicked epic poses. I miss Neeha’s silent chuckles, Sandesh’s giggles, Srosha’s peace signs, Sanjay’s fun-making, Sachin’s sleep, Archit’s English, Manav’s swag, Vishal’s kindness and Vanshika’s photography.

It was due to the hard work and dedication that we had put in – a week of drenching in mud while patrolling, pretending to be logs by lying flat on the ground, trying to understand the various Area 51 land-water games and above all, a week of enhancing our team skills and building mutual trust – that we ultimately achieved our pursuit of success. We spent some amazing time exploring the space shuttles in the Space Camp Museum. At times, we did take a nap in the simulators, but the annoying beeping sound did the perfect work of an alarm clock. Well, vegetarians beware …, NASA is not much of a fruitarian place, but it surely makes you feel like a real pilot. We had quite a ghostly time under the dimmed lights to get to know about our Top Secret Mission.

I still cherish those moments: getting ready in half an hour, changing from Battle Dress Uniforms (BDUs) to flight suits about six times (Redbull, I still hate you for that), Foghorn’s weird questions, centrifuge’s twists, that awesome about turn and so much more.

It was the Aviation challenge; winning that Aviator Wings award.

The Beautiful ThiefYou seem like a great thief,

You have stolen my heart

And left me in grief,

Which hurts my every part.

Your beauty cannot be compared

Even to the loveliest of flowers,

To question your great beauty’s power.

Than the stars that shine.

And even a speeding meteor

Couldn’t get closer to the stars more than a mile.

You have stolen my heart.

A Message to GodHere I am confined in a remorseful land,

Where, killing, hunger, rape and vandalism are the loudest decibels I hear,

God, won’t you give thy children a helping hand?

The fact that you may let go, renders my thoughts and fear!

Gone are the myths of mighty Zeus & Poseidon,

Who will save us from Mother Nature’s tantrum?

Earthquake & Tsunamis are your only gifts from heaven

What’s the purpose kneeling before your holy sanctum?

Be it Russia, Slovakia, India or China,

You distinguish our lives being born rich or poor,

The rich have buffet while the poor nibble cassava,

Isn’t your punishment a bit too harsh to endure?

Who is our savior, our avatar of Vishnu?

Or should we wait for decades for someone to end our salvation?

I can wear a turban & preach to be you,

It would only make me a phony not an end to our starvation.

After all, this is your mortal world,

You create, destroy and predestine our misfortunes,

As a son, a creation I pray to thee,

Aid us, guide us and lead us to serenity.

Matter of ConcernIt is a severe matter of concern,

That our merciless race has taken a wrong turn,

Coal is combusted and oil is thrown,

Isn’t the age of non-renewables gone?

Trees are cut and reserves are destructed,

It seems as if animals are pleading to be abducted,

It is time to enforce the change,

It is time for an essential exchange.

By using renewables globally,

Maybe mother earth would forgive us hopefully.

Isn’t it for a bit of light

To replace this suffocating, fuel-created right?

It’s up to us, we global citizens,

To give our creator the chance to forgive our sins.

We’ve got to attend a meeting with fate.- Ms. Siddhi Suri, FM 4A

THE PHOENIX THEORYThey say that the phoenix is the stuff of myths.

It’s not real, it’s not true.

That it’s the filling of hollow dreams

Of the sleepless me and you.

The phoenix they say, is a horn of fire,

Born out of ashes of endless quagmire…..

It lives a life to soar above the sooty sky

And then dies…… consumed by its own fire.

It’s ashes are no more than the hard earth,

It’s fury left a mild glow of amber hearth.

Unread, they say, because dreams cease to exist

In the wake of chasing glories……

We run in a concrete maze with closed eyes

Reaching for masked destinies.

But I believe in the phoenix, I believe in that fire.

I believe in those songs labeled as liars.

Because I see a phoenix every time

I see the girl picking a letter off the street.

And though she starves on hopeless feet.

She battles reality.

Ms. Suravi Ray

THE LAMB 48

I see a phoenix in that warrior

Who won’t let the world pull him back!

I see a phoenix in a rebel who sees light,

When the world sees a vision of black.

I see a phoenix in the struggling mother

Alone…yet holding the world together.

I see that fire in that artist

Who is proud to be a dreamer.

Much more than the rattling of hollow cans

Singing tales of illusion and delusion and desperation…

Maybe the phoenix is a horn of legends

But it’s hardened by the lashes of reality…

Much more than the blame fest of frustration

The phoenix causes its own destiny.

Fire… the endless song of the gazing stars

As they weep petrol on us and set us alight!

Fire…the silent rock-fest of the universe

As it pushes us out of the night!

It’s that phoenix which gives us strength to cry

When tears are called weak.

It’s that phoenix which gives us wings to fly

When that world mutes us as we speak.

The phoenix is in you, is in me, in everything I see.

From the runner to the singer to dreamer breaking free;

From the lover to the hater to the voter to the fighter;

From the hero to the worker to the endless celebrator.

We are all on fire like that one legend

And we revel in the harmony of a soul set free.

We strive; we survive and know no end

The variables of the phoenix theory.

They say that the phoenix is a myth

But I believe that it’s true.

It’s that which will never die

Within me and you.- Ms. Suravi Ray, ISC 2A

Kaleidoscope of ColoursThe Visual Arts is an integral part of everyday life, permeating all levels of human creativity, expression, communication and understanding. We celebrate the visual arts not only in the way we create images and objects, but also in the way we appreciate, enjoy, respect and respond to the practices of art-making by others from around the world. Theories and practices in visual arts are dynamic and ever-changing, and connect many areas of knowledge and human experience through individual and collaborative exploration, creative production and critical interpretation. The IB Diploma Programme Visual Arts Course encourages students to actively explore the visual arts within and across a variety of local, regional, national, international and intercultural contexts. Through inquiry, investigation, reflection and creative application, visual arts students develop an appreciation for the expressive and aesthetic diversity in the world around them. It is also satisfactory and fulfilling experience for people who are seeking lifelong enrichment through visual arts.

Departments of Visual Arts, Art & Craft at GSIS offer instruction in drawing, painting (oil colour painting, watercolour painting, acrylic painting, collage painting, pottery painting, glass painting, mural painting, clothes painting & designs), sculpture, ceramics, origami and more.
