When Andy Hamilton goes rummagingaround at a swap meet or flea market, he’salways on the lookout for the makings of hismetal works of art.

What might look like a colander to mostinstead looks like a turtle shell to Hamilton.Pot lids and air-conditioning gauges areeyes. Hedge clippers and rakes make goodwings. Rusty pipe wrenches bounce back tolife as grasshoppers.

Hamilton sees possibilities everywhere.“These two bikes here, they came from a

flea market,” said Hamilton, 62, outside hisworkshop in Lutz. “The guy was just tryingto get rid of them. Five dollars a piece. I’lltake the front forks off of them, use them forlegs. Chains, I’ll use for manes on a horse.

The satellite dish arm? “This is the neckof a horse.” And the post-hole diggers?“These are the heads for alligators,” he said.

“Potato forks are usually tail feathers for abird.”

Hamilton is a Lutz-based artist withTwisted Mind Rusty Metal, a company that

specializes in recycling old metal and otherobjects into art. Where other people see ob-solete car parts, rusted garden implements, empty bottles and old tools, Hamilton envi-sions whimsical works of art.

“Somehow, I can see something,”Hamilton said. “People have asked me, ‘Whatkind of drug do you take? Do you drink alot?’ It seems like the crazier I make stuff, the more people like it.”

Bins and shelves in his workshop arechock-full of the raw materials of his art-works. He has another collection of salvagedgoods that he plans to recycle outside nextto his shop.

“You’ve got to have a stockpile,”Hamilton said.

As he surveys his shop, there is stuffeverywhere. “It’s a disorganized, organizedmess,” he said.

Hamilton hunts regularly for old golfclubs, and often finds them for a dollar eachat thrift stores.

“I just cut all of these off the shafts,” hesaid, motioning to a stack of club heads. Thesteel pieces become ears for dogs and feetfor pigs.

“A lot of people throwthese away,” Hamilton said, pointing to some empty heli-um tanks. “They end up in thetrash and when I see ‘em, Igrab ‘em.”

The tanks become the bod-ies of pigs and other animals.

Hamilton, who has spentmore than four decades work-ing in masonry, started hismetal art business more thantwo years ago. It started whenhe decided to make a coupleof things for his wife’s garden.

“A friend of hers had soldplants at plant shows,” he said.“She told me to bring somealong and see if they wouldsell.”

They did sell, and the com-pany was born — using aname his wife, Sheila, created.

Over the past couple of years, he hassold 700 to 800 pieces, ranging in pricefrom $35 to $400.

He now spends nearly every evening outin the workshop behind his house, wherehe sandblasts rusted parts, welds pieces to-gether and paints to create Chihuahuas, pigs, robots, weather vanes, sunflowers, birds and all sorts of critters.

On weekends, one can find Hamiltonmaking the rounds — either to eventswhere he’s selling his art, or at swap meets, garage sales and flea markets where he’spicking up materials he can recycle.

“Starting September through basicallyMarch, that’s the busy season,” Hamilton said.

Over Labor Day weekend, for instance,he had a booth at the 13th annual GulfportGeckofest on Saturday. By Sunday, he was at

a swap meet in Bushnell. Monday, he hit theflea market in Webster.

During the off-season, typically Novemberthrough March, Hamilton spends Saturdaymornings in Dunedin at the Green Market. And the third Friday of each month, he’s inSafety Harbor between 6 p.m. and 10 p.m. Healso does three shows a year in Lakeland.

He also attends the Lutz Arts & CraftsFestival Christmas show.

“Last year we sold like 26 pieces onSaturday, and at least 10 or 12 on Sunday,”Hamilton said, adding he sells even moreduring the town’s Fourth of July celebration.

Hamilton’s wife is a big supporter of hisartistic pursuits.

“She wants me to quit masonry for this,”said Hamilton, who believes someday hewill.

For Lutz man, it’snot junk … it’s art

Running a news-paper is not muchdifferent than run-ning any other smallbusiness.

All successfulbusinesses work togive customers whatthey want at a fairprice so they contin-

ue to be their customer and tell friends andfamily about their products and services.

If you are a restaurant, you offer a menufilled with dishes customers have askedfor and prepared by the best chef in town.If you are a retail store, you sell productspeople want so they come back and shopagain.

At The Laker/Lutz News, our customersare both readers and advertisers. We knowthat if we give you stories and informationabout people and issues that are importantto you, you will read your paper cover tocover, week after week, and share whatyou’ve read with family and friends.

And we know that your readership hasa direct impact on the bottom line of ourother customer — businesses that adver-tise in our papers. The better and morecompletely you read your paper, the moreyou will take note of the adjacent ads.

Which brings me to why we’re makingsome changes to the kinds of stories wewrite in The Laker/Lutz News.

Last spring we hired an independentresearch company to ask readers whattype of news they want in their communi-ty paper. This was done in conjunctionwith our annual circulation audit that veri-fies the number of papers we print anddeliver.

This study revealed the No. 1 reasonpeople like you read The Laker/Lutz Newsis to learn about things to do in their com-munity. Our best-read section is What’sHappening with its news briefs about up-coming activities and events.

Because readers put What’s Happeningat the top of their list, we’re expanding thissection and increasing our coverage of

community events before they take place.B.C. Manion, our community editor for thepast three years, is taking on this chargeand welcomes suggestions on events you’dlike to see covered.

The second topic most requested isbusiness news.

You want to know what’s comingwhen you see a new commercial buildingunderway. You want to know about localroad improvements and how they will im-pact your drive to work. You are curiousabout local businesses, big and small, andare looking for new places to shop andprofessional services in your neighbor-hood.

To increase our business coverage, inlate July we hired Michael Hinman as ournews editor because of his communityand business journalism background. In ad-dition to working for several area weeklynewspapers, Michael spent five years as areporter at the Tampa Bay BusinessJournal.

Like B.C., Michael also welcomes yourstory ideas. Both journalists can bereached at (813) 909-2800 or by email [email protected] or [email protected].

You may have already noticed thatthere’s more business news in your paper.Last week, for example, we were the firstto report on the expansion of FloridaMedical Clinic’s new facilities inZephyrhills and Carrollwood. This weekwe have a story on the elevated express-way for SR 54 that’s being proposed by aprivate developer.

I began this column talking about theimportance of giving customers what theywant. That’s why we’re committing moreof our resources to stories you want toread. And why you’re seeing more storiesabout upcoming events, local businessesand growth and development.

With more than 60,000 readers, it’s im-possible to give every single personeverything they want in their communitypaper. But know that we’re acting on thebest information we have to give you thekinds of stories you tell us you’re most in-terested in reading in The Laker/Lutz News.

Larry Utt spent a year painstakingly creat-ing his replica of an S.E.5a plane, popularwith both American and British forces dur-ing World War I.

His plane is a fraction of the size of theoriginal Scout Experimental 5, which wasnearly 21 feet long, more than 9 feet high, and weighed 1,410 pounds when empty. But when it’s in the air, it’s hard to believeit’s only radio-controlled.

“It’s just a model, until it flies,” Utt said.“After that, it’s an airplane.”

The S.E.5a is one of more than a coupledozen radio-controlled planes from the“Downton Abbey” era scheduled to dazzleaviation fans Sept. 14 at the Golden Era Fly-In. The event, presented by Bay City Flyersof Land O’ Lakes, is open to spectators andpilots alike at Connerton Preserve’s Area 52field just off SR 52.

“You pay a small fee to fly, which is a

fundraiser for the club,”Utt said. Spectators arealso welcome beginningat 9 a.m. for a modest $3donation at the gate.

The field itself was agrazing area for cattle justa decade ago, and nowconsists of two pavilionsand grassy runways onland now owned by theSouthwest Florida WaterManagement District.Club members built thefield and maintain it. It hasbecome a popular dailystop for many of the localclub’s more than 200members.

During the week, someflyers could be out asearly as sunrise, and manystay until after lunch. Onthe weekends, many ofthe clubs’ younger mem-bers stop by, many timesfather and son teams enjoying the open sky.

Area 52 is one of three fields Bay Cityuses, but each one is special, said one of thegroup’s leaders, Mike Diesu. Despite the useof mufflers and flying when few other peo-ple are around, the hobby ofradio-controlled planes is not somethingusually well-accepted in neighborhoods.

“Clubs usually lose locations because ofdevelopment,” said Joe Barzyz, who movedto the area from New Jersey in 2005.“People who have an interest in all thisthink it’s nice, but the problem is that onceyou put a house on the other side of theroad, and they start hearing the mufflers, you have a problem.”

Area 52 is good because it’s a preserve, and there isn’t a house for miles. The onlything interfering with flying there, besidesbad weather, are sandhill cranes. If one of

those protected birds shows up on a run-way, everything stops until they make theirway elsewhere on the land.

Flyers at Area 52 respect the birds, andthe land they use. They are careful to notspill fuel on the grass, and keep the wholearea maintained, including grass mowing.

Bay City Flyers also stay active in thecommunity, helping with food drives, andteaching aviation students. Flying a radio-controlled plane is not as easy as it looks, and getting good at it could take as long asbecoming an actual pilot.

Sometimes, new flyers will spend thou-sands of dollars on equipment, and go outfeeling like they’re ready to go. But aftertheir first crash — and there are many crash-es in radio-controlled flying — they canbecome discouraged easily.

“It’s only as expensive as you want it to

be,” Utt said. While some planes can cost up-ward of $3,000, many good ones can befound for less than $300.

In fact, Bay City encourages people tojoin before they even buy a plane, to learnhow to fly, use some of the club’s equip-ment, and then use that experience inbuying their own plane.

And fly-ins, like the one next week, aregreat tools to add more pilots to the ranks.

The Golden Era Fly-In will run from 9a.m. through 2 p.m., and features planesfrom 1919 to 1939. Landing fees for pilotsare $10, and free lunch will be offered to allAcademy of Model Aeronautics memberswho are flying.

Lunch will be available for spectators fora small price.

Dr. Michael Craven, a well-respected chi-ropractor who has practiced in Land O’Lakes since 1983, has partnered withNeuropathyDR to offer treatment plansthat dramatically reduce chronic pain, burning, numbness, fatigue, muscleweakness and tingling caused by nervedamage from diabetic neuropathy, fibromyalgia and other chronic painsources.

Traditional treatments for chronic pain areonly focused on treating symptoms withprescription drugs and in the case of dia-betes, by controlling blood sugar. Butdrugs are expensive, often have limitedeffectiveness and can result in unpleasantside effects. If only physical therapy isprescribed, patients often do not find last-ing relief.

NeuropathyDR is a new breakthroughprogram for people who suffer from vari-ous forms of neuropathy. In addition tosuccessfully treating the symptoms ofthese chronic diseases, it also addresses thetrue root causes and fosters independence.

Fortunately for area residents, Dr. Cravenis the only doctor in Tampa Bay to offerthis new NeuropathyDR program and hisoffice is close to home for residents inPasco and north Hillsborough counties.

What Exactly Is Diabetic Neuropathy? This chronic disease is a result of nervedamage that results in pain, weakness, burning and tingling in the hands and feet. Its root cause is most often trauma, med-ications and systemic diseases like dia-betes. An estimated 20 million Americanssuffer from this debilitating illness.

How Does NeuropathyDR Help? This comprehensive program of patientcare incorporates nutrition, dietarychanges, exercise and rehab therapies. Ituses clinically tested NDGen home careelectrical therapy units, along with mas-sage, spinal therapy and LASER THERA-PY, to achieve lasting pain relief and long-term self-management of their illness.

What Makes NeuropathyDR DifferentFrom Other Treatments? This protocol begins by establishing abaseline upon which to improve and thendevelops four key areas:1.) Determine what caused a patient’sneuropathy, fibromyalgia or chronic painin the first place 2.) Diet analysis and specific nutritionalsupplement combinations 3.) Using Laser Therapy and NDGennerve stimulators to heal and restorefunction. 4.) Perhaps most importantly, Dr. Cravenmonitors his patient’s progress andadjusts their individual, specific treatmentplans based upon their clinical results toachieve maximum relief.

The Bottom LineThis program is for the patient that is seri-ous, really serious, about restoring theirhealth, normal daily function, indepen-dence, and reducing their dependency ondrugs.

For diabetic neuropathy there is usuallyfour to six weeks of supervised in-officetreatments, then patients continue on a per-sonal, home-care program. Most patientsneed only periodic, in-clinic follow-ups.Other conditions may require less.

Craven Chiropractic uses the highestquality professional and research-sup-ported nutritional products and therapytools. Laser Therapy especially has shownfantastic results with a multitude ofpainful conditions.

Dr. Craven isalways available forfollow up and emer-gencies. The officephone is answeredlive 24/7, offeringyou direct contactwith Dr. Craven byphone or email, atall reasonable hoursof every day. Hegladly shares clinical support materialswith your physicians and always refersyou back to your personal physicians forcareful monitoring of underlying medicalconditions.

men and women, we must take every op-portunity to thank them.”

The medal Scott and his wife Ann gave toveterans in Land O’ Lakes last week has theFlorida state seal on front, and the five sealsrepresenting the different branches of thearmed forces on the back.

Scott singled out one resident during hisspeech, Sgt. First Class Angel Torres-Mendez,who served between 1947 and 1974, com-pleting 18 missions — many of them solomissions — in Vietnam.

“He’s proud of his accomplishments, nothis medal,” Scott said. “Like many of our resi-dents here, his heart is as patriotic as it waswhen he joined the service many yearsago.”

A total of 136 veterans were honoredwith the medal during last Thursday’s cere-mony, honoring whom Sen. John Leggdescribed as “super.” Legg, R-Lutz, shared aconversation he said he had with his 5-year-old son that morning about where he wasgoing.

“’I am going to go stand and talk to someheroes,’ and his eyes got real big, ‘Are yougoing to meet Superman?’” Legg said. “I amgoing to see some super men and superwomen who, in our nation’s darkest hour,

stood in front of tyranny, stood in front ofthose things that seemed hopeless, andbrought light into the world.”

Maj. Gen. Emmett R. Titshaw Jr., who hasserved as the adjutant general of Florida forthe last three years, said the state’s 12,000-soldier strong National Guard is “focused onthe future, and our horizons.”

“But we have a deep appreciation of ourheritage, and that heritage you contributedto and built,” Titshaw said. “We literally standupon your shoulders and accomplishments, taking over the nation you provided to us,safe and secure.”

posed project in a letter addressed to AnathPrasad, the secretary of the state roads de-partment.

“This will be the first of its kind, privatelyfunded, designed, built, operated and main-tained elevated expressway in the state ofFlorida,” Stanley wrote. “It will create thou-sands of jobs for Floridians, furthereconomic development in Pasco County, im-prove traffic flow, and promote use ofexisting and future transportation facilities.”

International Infrastructure Partners wasformed specifically to manage the projectand consists of engineers, accountants andfinancial professionals, according toStanley’s proposal.

The construction would be done byPCL, a company that is currently working onthe Interstate 4 connector project. The com-pany also has completed work for thetoll-funded Lee Roy Selmon CrosstownExpressway.

Guggenheim Securities LLC would bethe capital partner for the project, Stanleysaid, soliciting investments through a fundcalled “FL54Xpressway.”

Kris Carson, spokeswoman for District 7of the DOT, said it is too early to tell if anyproject like this would come to fruition.

“It could be that nothing ever happens,”Carson said. “There are a lot of questions tobe answered.”

In response to Stanley’s proposal, thestate roads department issued a request forproposals to encourage a competitiveprocess, and set a date of Oct. 23 for open-ing those proposals.

John Hagen, president and CEO of thePasco Economic Development Council Inc.,said when the idea of a toll road was initiallyraised, there were questions about whowould pay for it, and its financial feasibility.

The fact that a private group has steppedforward and is willing to pay for it, gives le-gitimacy to the concept, he said.

Like Carson, Hagan said it is too early totell if a project will materialize.

“There are a lot of technical questionsthat need to be answered,” Hagan said.

But if a toll road is built, it will provide anadditional transportation option that willallow traffic to move quickly across thecounty on a toll road, while local traffic usesthe surface streets, the economic develop-ment expert said.

Steps must be taken to increase traffic ca-pacity, Hagan said. Otherwise, “eventually SR54/SR 56 will just become a parking lot.”Jeff Miller, a real estate agent and resident ofWesley Chapel, said he welcomes this typeof project. He sees it as a way for people, like himself, to get to New Port Richey andPinellas County much more quickly than ispossible now.

“It’s not a done deal. We’re all trying todetermine if it’s feasible,” Stanley said. “If it’snot profitable, it won’t be built.”

If the project is done, however, it will em-ploy hundreds of construction workers andwill bring more industry to Pasco County.

It will also help prevent gridlock, asPasco continues to grow, said Stanley, whohas been a part of the Florida TransportationBuilders Association for 35 years, and wasthe group’s president in 2005-06.

“We’re looking to the future,” he said.In its request for proposals, the state

DOT requires those interested in pursuing aprivate toll road to obtain required ap-provals, talk specifics at how it would buildthe road, and share any future infrastructurebuild-outs.

The submitter must also demonstrate itsability to further economic development inthe region and state, protect the environ-ment, create temporary and permanent jobsin Florida, improve transportation efficiencyand otherwise benefit citizens and the state.

The state would not provide any fundingfor the project, according to the RFP.

A decision on awarding the projectwould occur on Nov. 6, according to the re-quest for proposal.

The Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks killed412 emergency workers in New York Cityalone, all of them trying to rescue peoplefrom the World Trade Center after eachtower was struck by a commercial jetliner.

But it’s not just during terrorist attacksthey put their lives on the line. This yearalone, 79 firefighters have lost their lives inthe line of duty, according to the U.S. FireAdministration. Between 1977 and 2011,there have been 4,325 on-duty firefighter fa-talities — an average of 127 each year.

The Benevolent Fund raises money notfor equipment or vehicles, but instead tohelp members of the Pasco County FireRescue when they may need a little finan-cial assistance.

“They are the ones that always say it’sjust a job, but we all know they run into dan-ger as we are running away from it,” Turnertold The Laker/Lutz News last month.

“As we reflect back on that horrible dayback in September 2001, we remember allthe public safety personnel (who) were af-fected,” said Pasco County Fire Chief ScottCassin. “They were doing everything they doevery day: saving lives and saving property.”

Pasco County Choppers, which hosted theevent, said nearly $4,900 was raised for thelocal benevolent fund, more than double whatwas raised last year. Even winners of the pokerrun, a fun event to encourage motorcyclists tovisit multiple locations, gave a little back.

“Winners of the poker run reverted near-ly all of the money they won back to thecause,” Turner said in an email after theevent. “Once again (it shows) that the bikercommunity is there for those that lay theirlives on the line for us, every single day ofthe year.”

Pasco County residents like to expressthemselves at the polls, but aren’t all that in-terested in attending public meetings.

When they need to go to work, chancesare they’ll hop in their car and drive them-selves there.

And, when it comes to ranking efforts tocreate jobs and grow the economy — theysee plenty of room for improvement.

These are just a few of the findingsfrom the National Citizen Survey, which of-fers a glimpse of how Pasco residents viewthe quality of life in the county and pro-vides a basic report card on governmentservices.

The survey is a collaborative effort be-tween the National Research Center Inc.and the International City/CountyManagement Association.

The survey was developed by theNational Research Center to provide a statis-tically valid survey of resident opinionsabout the services provided by local govern-ment.

The survey was distributed to 1,200 ran-domly selected addresses, and of those, 243were returned for a return rate of 23 per-cent. The survey has a plus or minus 6percent margin of error.

According to the survey, 91 percent ofthose responding said they are registered tovote and 81 percent said they made it to thepolls on Election Day.

Far fewer seemed interested in makingtheir opinions known at public meetings.Just 21 percent of the survey takers saidthey attended a meeting of local elected of-ficials or other local public meeting in thelast year.

When it comes to getting around, 76 per-cent reported that they drive alone in theircar to get the work, and just 7 percent saidthey’d been on a bus in the county duringthe past year. Fewer than a third gave goodor excellent marks to ease of biking or walk-ing around the county.

Overall, 68 percent of those surveyedgave Pasco County a good or excellent markfor its quality of life. But just 34 percent gavegood or excellent marks to economic devel-

opment, and a whopping 85 percent saidjob growth is too slow.

Opportunities to attend cultural eventsalso scored poorly, with just 30 percent giv-ing good or excellent marks in thatcategory.

On a brighter note, however, 79 percentgave excellent or good marks for the coun-ty’s public library services.

The survey rated a number of countyservices, which were compared to a bench-mark database. Of the 40 services for whichcomparison was available, none exceededthe benchmark, 15 were similar and 25were ranked below.

Despite that outcome, though, 81 per-cent of those surveyed said they would besomewhat or very likely to recommend liv-ing in Pasco County, and 83 percent saidthey planned to remain in Pasco for thenext five years.

The county has made gains in someareas.

The availability of affordable health care, for instance, was rated as good or excellentby 60 percent of the survey takers, com-pared to 46 percent last year and 44 percentin 2009.

Health services, overall, also scored ahigher mark — with good or excellent rat-ings by 64 percent, compared to 57 percentlast year and 49 percent in 2009.

Parks and recreation also picked up afew points, with 50 percent of those sur-veyed rating recreational opportunities asgood or excellent, compared to 45 percentlast year.

On the public safety front, 93 percent ofthe respondents reported feeling safe orsomewhat safe in their homes during theday.

Five percent of those surveyed said theyor someone in their household had been avictim of crime — compared to 14 percentthe previous year.

However, just 72 percent said they re-ported the crime to police, compared with84 percent reporting it the year before.

The Pasco County Commission is expect-ed to hear a report on the survey when theymeet Sept. 4. The item had been on the com-mission’s Aug. 27 agenda, but was delayedbecause of long discussions on other issues.

Church provides personal touch with concierge ministryBy B.C. [email protected]

It’s a mammoth church — with a 143-acre campus, a 440,000-square-foot buildingand 12,000 members.

It’s so big that it uses five entrances onSundays to allow members to stream into its5,000-seat auditorium.

Despite the scale, Exciting IdlewildBaptist Church in Lutz wants to extend a per-sonal touch to its members, said Rich Walker.

He’s a church staff member who alsoleads Idlewild Concierge, a ministry with 30volunteers. And more than eight years ago, when Idlewild was moving into its largerquarters off North Dale Mabry Highway andVan Dyke Road, Walker came up the idea ofcreating a concierge ministry.

“We’re still the only one that I know of,anywhere,” said Walker, a retired law enforce-ment officer who oversees campus safety.

The ministry helps visitors and churchnewcomers tend to details that are important

to them. The idea came to Walker when ahotel concierge service helped him and hiswife. They were traveling and wanted to gofor dinner, but they didn’t want to have todrive to get there.

Walker’s wife suggested he ask theconcierge for some recommendations. Hedid, and within 15 minutes they had a list ofrestaurant options, with different specialtiesand price points, along with directions forgetting to them.

Idlewild’s concierge ministry strives tocreate a sense of hospitality, with the mottoof “Providing the unexpected personaltouch,” Walker said.

Ministry volunteers work at the church’swelcome center to greet people who are vis-iting the campus. Sometimes they helppeople find their way around campus. Othertimes they provide individual tours to helppotential members learn about the church’sministries and ways to meet their specificneeds.

“There’s not a line out the door, but everyweek, somebody will come and they want tolook at the church,” Walker said. “They’ll justshow up on their own.”

The concierge will get a bit of informa-

tion about the visitor and will let them knowabout various ministries that may suit theirinterests, Walker said. The idea is to helpthem plug in and feel at home, he said.

“There are some people on a real fact-finding tour, is this the church for me? Thatcan take a couple of hours,” Walker said.

That’s what happened when MargeryCordova recently visited the church, Walkerrecalled.

“She told me right up front, ‘I am lookingfor a church home.’ That told me, ‘We kind ofwant to dive deep here and see if this is agood fit,’” he said.

Cordova was impressed.“I got the deluxe grand tour of the whole

facility,” said the woman who moved to Lutzin late July from Sacramento, Calif., after herhusband’s death.

Besides discussing ministries that may beof interest and showing off the facilities,Walker enjoys giving visitors a look at “back-stage” Idlewild.

The walk-through involves travelingthrough corridors decked with framed pho-tographs taken through the years during bigchurch events. Visitors can duck into thechoir and orchestra rooms and check out

the staging area where props are kept forchurch productions.

They can even walk down a passagewaythat leads from the orchestra room to theraised stage in the worship center.

Besides helping newcomers and visitors, the ministry also pitches in on specialevents. Team members drive trams at thechurch’s Fourth of July event, for instance, and give airport shuttle rides to specialguests.

The team once arranged airport pickupsfor 65 missionaries visiting Idlewild. Theymet the missionaries at the airport, tookthem to their hotels, transported them to thechurch each day and ferried them around onerrands.

One volunteer helped organize the logis-tics by creating an Excel spreadsheetdetailing the airline and arrival time of eachmissionary.

The concierge ministry at Idlewild paysattention to details. And that makes a differ-ence for both members and visitors alike.

“Everyone there is just super welcomingand genuine,” Cordova said. “It’s not a phonything. You really feel it’s sincere. I feel like Iwas led there.”

Rich Walker, manager of campus safety atExciting Idlewild Baptist Church, leads theconcierge ministry at the church. The ideais to provide ‘an unexpected personaltouch,’ he said. (Photos by B.C. Manion)

It’s the health screeningthat everyone 50 and olderdreads: colonoscopy. Mostfear the preparation andworry that the procedureitself will hurt, but the mostfrightening thing about acolonoscopy is what canhappen if you skip it.

A colonoscopy can findpre-cancerous growths assmall as one millimeter before theycan turn into deadly tumors. Eventhough colon cancer can be a slowgrowing cancer, cells from polypsgrowing in the colon can grow intolymph nodes or metastasize(spread) to parts of the body such asthe liver.

“The good news is that regularscreening is the most powerfulweapon for preventing colorectalcancer in its earliest stages, when it’seasier to treat,” said Christian Bailey,M.D., a gastroenterologist at St.Joseph’s Hospital in Tampa and St.Joseph’s Hospital-North in Lutz.“Removing polyps can help preventcancer from starting yet nearly half ofall adults skip the test.”

Kevin Kruszewski turned 50 andknew he was on the clock for his firstcolonoscopy, but he didn’t do it rightaway. Like most, Kruszewski wasskeptical about the potentialdiscomfort. Then a couple of yearspassed and he found himself pastdue for the screening.

Finally, he called Dr. Bailey andscheduled the procedure.

“I was concerned because I was acouple of years past due for my firstcolonoscopy, but I quickly felt at easeafter my visit with Dr. Bailey,”Kruszewski said.

While he agrees the preparationwasn’t pleasant, it certainly wasn’t

bad enough to avoid theimportant procedurealtogether.

“I had to follow a specialdiet for a couple of daysand take some medication– I stayed home the daybefore and it really wasn’tthat bad,” he said. As for the procedure itself,

Kruszewski summed it up,“It really wasn’t a big deal!”

“Kevin, like most of my patients, learned that colon screening typicallytakes less than 30 minutes and themajority of the discomfort is due tothe preparation during the daybefore,” Dr. Bailey explained.“Afterwards, patients are just a bitwoozy from anesthesia but canreturn home after a couple of hoursand resume normal activity.”

“If a polyp is found, it will beremoved during the test, and oftentimes no further treatment isnecessary,” Bailey said.

Patients also should know thatwhile the recommendation forcolonoscopy screening is to start atage 50, some patients may have riskfactors that require them to beginscreening earlier, while others maynot have to return for additionalscreening for years to come.

For Kruszewski, his test resultscame with good news, “Dr. Baileysaid he will see me in 10 years!”

Sunlake stays calm, steady even after Pasco upsetBy Michael MurilloThe Laker/Lutz News Correspondent

Every high school football team hassome optimism when they start a new sea-son. But if your first opponent is consideredthe best in the county — riding a 38-gameregular season winning streak — that opti-mism might be tempered.

Unless you’re the Sunlake Seahawks. The Seahawks never trailed in a 17-6

home victory over the Pasco Pirates on Aug.30. And even though the gridiron crew fromSunlake High School is considered a strongteam in their own right, they know it was aspecial accomplishment to beat someonewho hasn’t seen the losing column in theregular season since 2009.

“I hate to rank victories, but it was obvi-ously a huge victory just from the fact thatPasco has dominated everybody in the regu-lar season for so long,” said Coach BillBrowning, who has been with Sunlake’sfootball program since its inception sevenyears ago. That tenure includes a few previ-ous losses to the Pirates, but Browning feelsthat other milestone wins in the school’shistory contributed to a sense that theycould finally turn the corner against thecounty’s regular-season juggernaut.

The Seahawks had a small lead when themarching bands took the field halfwaythrough. While Browning was feeling goodabout his team’s chances, it wasn’t until theopening plays of the second half that he feltlike it was going to be Sunlake’s night.

“It was a close game going in at half-

time,” Browning said. “We went out (to startthe third quarter), received the football andtook the first play for a long touchdown. That was huge. I think that gave us the mo-mentum in the second half and they(Pasco) could never re-establish that mo-mentum.”

That play was a 64-yard touchdown runby the team’s starting fullback, junior LoganWolfe. It was Wolfe’s second touchdown ofthe night and made him the team’s star inone of the school’s biggest wins. But he’snot interested in taking much credit for him-self.

“The huge run would never have hap-pened if it wasn’t for this team’s offensive

line. They produced that huge hole for meto run through, so that 64-yard run was allthem,” Logan said.

In fact, he credits his teammates on theother side of the ball — the Seahawks’ de-fense, which frustrated Pasco throughoutthe evening — with the key to the victory. He believes they have one of the best de-fenses in the state.

Whoever gets to share credit for the bigwin, Browning is making sure they don’t gettoo overconfident from it: The Seahawks’ re-ward for toppling the Pirates was a toughweek of practice to prepare for their nextgame this past weekend.

Yet Sunlake persevered, beating River

Ridge 25-0, and improving to 2-0 on the sea-son.

The team’s goals are the same as before— win the district title and reach the stateplayoffs. But Browning acknowledges thatthe win gave the Seahawks a boost and a lit-tle swagger, and shows the athletes whatthey’re capable of accomplishing.

But Browning isn’t adopting any newswagger himself: With around 35 years ofcoaching experience and more than 20years in the head coach’s role at schools likeHernando High School and SpringsteadHigh School in addition to Sunlake, he does-n’t allow himself to become too elated anddejected following a single game.

In fact, it wasn’t long after the Fridaynight win that Browning turned his atten-tion to their next opponent.

“To be truthful, Saturday morning I wasfocused on River Ridge,” Browning said witha laugh. “I’m one who never gets too high, and I don’t get too low. I try to stay at ahappy medium. Coaches who don’t do thatget on roller coaster rides, and they’re theones who have a tendency to burn out anddon’t last very long in the game.”

If you've never seen the TampaBay Rebels, a semipro basketballteam that plays its home games atFreedom High School in New Tampa, you might wonder if they're anygood. Can a local team really play en-tertaining basketball at a high level?

According to team founder andhead coach Fernando Rojas, you'dbe pleasantly surprised.

"My opinion is this: We play thehighest level of basketball in the Bayarea," he said. "We have had playersfrom the NBA's DevelopmentalLeague, players that played onNCAA championship teams, andmany players with experience inEuropean basketball. This combina-tion of skill and maturity elevatesthe game higher than any collegelevel."

If Rojas sounds confident in histeam, it's because they have the history toback it up. Playing in the Florida BasketballAssociation, the team went 11-1 last year be-fore dismantling the Heartland Prowl in theleague's championship game. And in 2013,they followed it up with a 10-2 regular sea-son and another trip to the championshipgame.

This year, the Rebels came within a bas-ket of back-to-back titles, losing 111-109 tothat same Heartland Prowl club they defeat-ed the year before.

According to Rojas, building a winner insuch a short time — the club started opera-tions in 2011 — is no accident. He follows acorporate philosophy, which involves indi-vidual responsibility and goal setting, and hewants everyone onboard.

That includes staff as well as players.Rojas’ director of scouting, Andrew Phillips, has been onboard since before the Rebelsexisted. Phillips was also involved with theTampa Bay Sharks, a touring team Rojasfounded before the Rebels, and he believesthe Rebels' success begins with its founder.

"I think a lot of it just has to do with lead-ership and the vision that Fernando has putinto place,” Phillips said. “From an organiza-tional standpoint, we try to have clear goalsand objectives, and we've been fortunate tobe able to meet most of those."

Those goals include finding talent andexecuting on the court, but it doesn't stopthere. The Rebels stay involved in the com-munity, Rojas said, and he believes it'simportant for a local team to partner withlocal charities.

"We all live in the same community:Players, fans and coaches,” he said. “It justmakes sense to participate and make thelives of others better."

The Rebels already have supportedgroups like Boys & Girls Club and Habitatfor Humanity, and will be involved with the

Police Athletic League next season. Rojassaid he hopes to work with others in the fu-ture as well.

The Rebels play their games at Freedom, but that's not the only connection to theschool. Rojas is in his fourth year as a volun-teer assistant coach for the school's varsityteam, and he enjoys giving his student-ath-letes a chance to connect with veteranswho have attained success at the collegiateand professional level.

"Bringing my semipro team to Freedomgives the young players an opportunity tosee players who attended renowned collegeprograms and follow their dreams," Rojassaid.

Even though the team's season endedlast month, the Rebels aren't the kind offranchise to sit idle. Tryouts are scheduledfor next March, and Rojas is looking into tak-ing the team abroad to face some foreigncompetition.

And Phillips already is looking at improv-ing the roster for next season with a focuson size at the power forward and center po-sitions. He hopes to add players who willprovide depth, and challenge existing teammembers for expanded playing time.

As part of his scouting, Phillips looks atlocal colleges and leagues for athletes whowant to continue playing and have the skills tocompete at the level the Rebels demand, whichensures that the team retains its local roots.

But regardless of the names on nextyear's roster, Phillips has confidence in theteam because he has confidence in the manguiding them.

"We know what we can do, we knowwhat the goals are, and that they can bemet,” Phillips said. “And there's a willingnesson (Rojas') end to put in the time to get itdone.”

Families Love Elsa’s 41 Tex-Mex Sports Grill

Families looking for affordable dining withsomething for everyone are flocking to Elsa’s 41Tex-Mex Sports Grill in downtown Lutz.

In addition to its trademark Tex-Mex cuisine,Elsa’s is known for its signature wings, excellentpizzas and outstanding specials — 50-cent wingson Sundays, $1 tacos on Mondays and kids eat freeon Tuesdays.

Along with these incredible deals, diners canalso choose from Elsa’s “2 for $20” menu, avail-able every day, all day long, and includes oneappetizer, two entrées and one delicious dessert.

“Our portions are so generous that our “2 for$20” menu serves so much food that guests fre-quently ask for take-home boxes,” said ManagerJustin Hemmert, whose family owns Elsa’s.

“In addition to a shared appetizer and dessert, each entree includes Mexican rice and refriedbeans. It really is a heck of a deal.”

Elsa’s is a neighborhood restaurant located inthe heart of downtown Lutz at US 41 and SunsetBoulevard. Just four miles south of State Road 54,and four miles north of Bearss Avenue, its patronsmostly come from Lutz, Land O’ Lakes, WesleyChapel, Carrollwood and north Tampa.

“We truly are a neighborhood restaurant with agenuine, family atmosphere,” said Justin. “We are agood alternative to chain restaurants for familieslooking for great food, great service and greatprices. Plus, we have a full service bar and superhappy hour prices for those wanting a beer, mar-garita or cocktail with their meal.”

Elsa’s all-day, every-day drink special features

two-for-one well drinks and $1.75 pint domesticdrafts. It also offers $5 margaritas on Mondays andhalf-price bottled Mexican beer on Tuesdays.

Elsa’s bar is best known for its trademark BadJuan margarita, by far its most popular mixed drink– a clear, lime-based drink made from tequila, limejuice and triple sec. Complementing the Bad Juanis the Bad Juanita, a strawberry margarita popularwith the ladies and young adults. Beware, thestrawberry has the same alcohol content as theoriginal.

“Our Bad Juans are very smooth for a margari-ta,” said Justin. “People like them because they aredelicious and also for their strong alcohol content, which is double the amount of liquor found in abottle of wine.

Elsa’s is owned and operated by the Hemmertfamily, a multigenerational restaurant family thathas owned restaurants in Ohio for more than 30years.

Son Justin took over as general manager of theLutz restaurant last fall. He grew up in the familybusiness and worked in the kitchen through high

school and college. After graduating, he spent 10years working as a CPA, five of those years for acompany located in Clearwater, before returning tothe family business in 2009.

“Justin’s financial expertise and understandingof business operations has been invaluable in hismanagement of our Lutz store,” said Bill Hemmert,Justin’s father and founder of the company.

“We want local residents to know that Elsa’s hasa very strong capital base,” he continued. “We canweather the normal up-and-downs of the restaurantbusiness, and now with Justin’s financial back-ground, our Lutz store is stronger than ever.”

“We’re here to stay,” Justin adds.

More Than Mexican – Something For Everyone

Elsa’s owner Bill Hemmert, left, and his son Justin, proudly display a selec-tion of their affordable family fare at their downtown Lutz restaurant.

Elsa’s employees and customers wantto congratulate long-time managerAmanda Torres on the birth of her beautiful baby daughter, Teagan. We look forward to your return!
