THE LAKE ISLE OF INNISFREE

By William Butler Yeats

I will arise and go now, and go to Innisfree, And a small cabin build there, of clay and wattles made; Nine bean rows will I have there, a hive for the honeybee, And live alone in the bee-loud glade.

And I shall have some peace there, for peace comes dropping slow, Dropping from the veils of the morning to where the cricket sings; There midnight's all a-glimmer, and noon a purple glow, And evening full of the linnet's wings.

I will arise and go now, for always night and day I hear lake water lapping with low sounds by the shore; While I stand on the roadway, or on the pavements gray, I hear it in the deep heart's core.

A metaphor is a word or a phrase used to describe something as if it were something else.

A wave of terror washed over him

The terror isn’t actually a wave, but a wave is a good way of describing the feeling.

A metaphor makes a strong image in the reader's head.

When you use a metaphor, you are saying that a person, place, animal or thing IS some thing else (not just LIKE it!).

Here are some examples of metaphors:

A blanket of snow-covered the streets. He is very bright.

I’m very busy: I have a l____ on my p___

He’s very cruel: He has a h___ of s____

Don’t waste your time: T____ is m____y

She was terrified: She f___ with f____
