Teachers are busy writing Semester 2 reports; our School Self-Evaluation Committee is pulling together the data and feedback from our annual surveys and focus groups to inform the third phase of our School Plan; and preparations for the many end of year activities are well underway. It certainly is a busy time at school. To assist us with our planning, it is really important that we have a good understanding of how many students will be returning in 2017. If your child won’t be at KPS next year, please contact the office as a matter of importance (if you haven’t already done so) to help make our planning over the next couple of weeks more accurate. School Leaders for 2017 Today, I spoke to all of Yr 5 about the possibility of nominating for the position of SRC President or Vice President in 2017. The nomination and election process was explained to all Yr 5 students present and I hope that we have many nominations from the great potential within that cohort of students. I encourage parents of Yr 5 students to have a chat with their child about the possibility of nominating. All nominations are due to be handed to Mrs Delaney no later than Friday 18 th November. Please note that late nominations will not be accepted so it’s important that interested students meet this important deadline. Kindergarten Transition Process Our Kindergarten transition concluded this week and it was great to have our newest students visiting us over the past 3 weeks. We will have 2 full Kindergarten classes next year and it was great to see how excited they are about starting their school life with us here at Keiraville. A big thank you to Mr Hailstone and Mrs Veitch for their fabulous work coordinating the transition process and to all the teachers and parent helpers who made the transition a success again this year. Late applications are not accepted by the Selective Schools Unit so please make sure it is in by then if you are interested in this possibility for your child in 2018. Special Swimming Scheme The Special Swimming Scheme begins next week and students taking part will go to the pool each day for 2 weeks with Mr Hailstone and Mrs Musker. This is a fabulous learn to swim program that caters for students at many levels from non- swimmers to developing swimmers. Let’s hope for fine, warm weather over the next couple of weeks!

Big Day Out & Big Day In

Planning Ahead for 2017 It’s hard to believe we are at that time of year again when we’re starting to make plans for next year.

Special Swimming Scheme The Special Swimming Scheme begins next week and students taking part will go to the pool each day for 2 weeks with Mr Hailstone and Mrs Musker. Dr Justin Coulson Workshops Thank you to the many parents and friends who came along to the parenting workshop with Dr Justin Coulson on Tuesday night. There was a huge turn-out which was great to see and the room was engaged by the interesting and informative presentation. Earlier that afternoon, the staff worked with Dr Coulson in another session that was equally worthwhile, exploring the topics of positivity, hopefulness and happiness at work and at home. These workshops were made possible through a special school community engagement grant and I think they were very worthwhile for all concerned. Mr Hailstone is asking for any parent feedback on the evening workshop which can be best passed on to him through an email addressed to the school email account [email protected]

Band Concert The band and instrumental concert last night was a real showcase of the talent we have amongst our school community. Our students showed us their fabulous talents and the whole evening was a clear demonstration of what can be achieved through the dedication, effort and enthusiasm of our fabulous Band and Instrumental Program staff, led superbly by Mrs Thompson. It is great to see that our program continues to flourish and next year looks to be no different with over 90 students wanting to take part. The next performance for our band will be at the Illawarra Instrumental Music Festival at the UoW on Thursday 24th November.

Remembrance Day Ceremony This Friday 11th November, we will be holding our annual Remembrance Day Ceremony to acknowledge this important day in the annual calendar. Due to Alternative Sports being on in the morning, we will hold this ceremony immediately after the lunch break at 11:40am. Parents are welcome to join us for this short ceremony if they wish.

North Wollongong AECG Meeting The next meeting of the North Wollongong AECG Meeting will be held at Austinmer PS on Wednesday 16th November from 4pm. Parents are welcome to attend monthly AECG meetings where Aboriginal education and consultation is discussed as we continue our focus on improving outcomes for Aboriginal students, their families and our community in general.

Assembly The next class assembly will be held on Friday 18th November and will be hosted by KV. As always, parents and friends are welcome to attend our assemblies which begin at 2pm in the school hall.

Teachers are Learners Too! Over the past fortnight, Stage 1 and Kindergarten teachers have continued their ongoing L3 training. Friday 28th October: Mr Hailstone attended LMBR training. Monday 7th & Thursday 8th October: Mr O’Connor attended a Principal Leadership Conference in

Sydney.

From the Sports Desk…. Alternative Sport – Term 4 Our K – 6 alternative sports program will conclude tomorrow with this being the last day. It has again been a great success and I know all the students and teachers have enjoyed this program. Thank you to all the parents for your support with this program once again. Please feel free to share any feedback you may have about the program for future planning in 2017. Students participating in golf will attend the Wollongong Golf Club for a private lesson and some rounds on the beautiful greens down at Wollongong. This is funded by the school sports grant program. They will get to showcase their talent as future golf pros and give Mr Hailstone a lesson or two! Students who participated in the AUSKICK program will receive a bag and a ball in a backpack. This program was funded by a sporting grant that enabled our students to participate for free.

Swimming Scheme This swimming and water safety program will commence in Week 6 and Week 7. We have 60 students from Years 2—5 who will participate in this. Thank you, Ms Musker and Mr Hailstone, for taking the students over the 10 day program. Students participating should be reminded to bring their swimmers, towel and change of underwear each day for this program.

Year 6 Water Swim Safety Test – Friday 18th November In order for the Year 6 students to attend their Big Day Out to Jamberoo, the students will need to complete the water swim and safety test that will be conducted at University Aquatic Centre on Friday 18th November at 12pm. The students will be walking to and from the University pool with Miss Pigram and Mrs Breslin. Students please ensure you are prepared with swimmers under your sports uniform and bring a towel and change of underwear. Permission notes for this have already been returned.

CWPSSA Gala Day – Stages 2 & 3 –Friday 25th November Our school will be participating in the Central Wollongong Gala Day for Stages 2 and 3 on Friday 25th November. Primary Ethics Update

We have offered 3 classes of Primary Ethics classes this year - an alternative to non-scripture. Classes are 1/2,

3/4 and 5/6.

A number of parents at KPS volunteer as teachers for the Primary Ethics classes.

Primary Ethics is offering free training at the University of Wollongong on the weekend of 11-12 February

2017. Most training sessions are in Sydney so if you have been thinking about training, now is the time.

Please send an email to Ann Hollifield at [email protected] to find out more. The website http://

www.primaryethics.com.au also has lots of information including videos of Primary Ethics classes.
