PRAYERS AT THE FOOT OF THE ALTAR.The priest crosses himself (and we do too: a) and says aloud (V.) To which the servers respond (R.)

The Celebrant ascends the Altar, reciting silently:

Aufer a nobis, quæsumus, Dómine,iniquitátes nostras: ut ad Sanctasanctórum puris mereámur méntibusintroíre. Per Christum Dóminum nostrum.Amen.

Take away from us our iniquities, webeseech Thee, O Lord, that we may beworthy to enter with pure minds into theHoly of Holies. Through Christ our Lord.Amen.

The Celebrant bows down to kiss the Altar-stone containing the Relics:

Orámus te, Dómine, per mérita Sanctórumtuórum, quórum relíquiæ hic sunt, etómnium Sanctórum: ut indúlgere dignérisómnia peccáta mea. Amen.

We beseech Thee, O Lord, by the meritsof Thy Saints whose relics lie here, and ofall the Saints, deign in Thy mercy topardon me all my sins. Amen.

He blesses the incense, then he incenses the Crucifix, Relics, and Altar.

Ab illo beneadicáris in cuius honórecremáberis.

Thou art blessed a by Him, in whosehonor, thou shalt burn.

The Celebrant goes to the Epistle side where he is incensed (two swings) by the Master ofCeremonies. (This is the regulation number of swings for a member of the clergy; AlmightyGod and the Missal, His word—get three swings, the Servers and the Congregation: one.)

He turns toward the Altar Missal, makes the sign of the cross and recites both the Introit andthe Kýrie, which the Schola had begun singing during the “Prayers at the Foot of the Altar”.

THE GLÓRIA IN EXCÉLSISAt the emphasized words, the Celebrant, Servers, and the Congregation bow to the Cross;

when seated, the Priest removes his Biretta and does so. The Master of Ceremonies turns tothe Cross and bows; the Congregation and other Servers bow their head in place. He sings:

Glória in excélsis Deo, (and the chantis taken up by the choir while he

THE HOMILY

THE CREDOThe Celebrant returns to the middle of the altar to say the Creed.

When he has finished, the Celebrant will sit until the choir’s chant is ended. All stand as the celebrant rises and returns to the center of the altar.

Credo in unum Deum, (the chant is takenup by the choir while he continues it in

The Celebrant places the Paten under the Host, uncovers the Chalice, makes a genuflection,then takeing the Host, he breaks It in the middle over the Chalice, saying:

Per eúndem Dóminum nostrum IesumChristum Fílium tuum, qui tecum vivit etregnat in unitáte Spíritus Sancti, Deus.

Through the same Jesus Christ Thy Son,our Lord, who lives and reigns with Thee inthe unity of the Holy Spirit, God.

He replaces the right half of the Host on the Paten. then breaks off a Particle from the otherhalf which he also places on the Paten; then, holding the Particle in his right hand over the

Chalice now held in his left, he says:

The Priest makes the Sign of the Cross with the Particle over the Chalice, saying:

He inserts the Particle into the Chalice of the Precious Blood, saying.

AGNUS DEIThe Priest repeats the words of St. John the Baptist, who thus proclaimed the Messias to the

COMMUNION OF THE PRIEST.

Panem cœléstem accípiam, et nomenDómini invocábo.

I will take the Bread of heaven, and callupon the name of the Lord.

A Bell sounds thrice: He takes the two pieces of the Sacred Host in his left hand, then, saying theopening words each time, and striking his breast with his right hand as he does so, he says thrice:

Dómine non sum Dignus, et intra subtectum meum, sed tantum dic verbo, etsanábitur ánima tua, (x3) The bell is rung ashe says these words and those of thecongregation who are to communicate goto the altar rails. Corpus Dómini nostriIesu Christi custódiat ánimam meam invitam ætérnum.

Lord, I am not worthy that Thou should enterunder my roof, but only say the word, and mysoul shall be healed. He receives the Sacred Host. After a brief meditation, the celebrant collects any fragments of theHost that may be on the corporal and brushes them into the Chalice with his fingers, saying:

Quid retríbuam Dómino pro ómnibus quæretríbuit mihi? Cálicem salutáris accípiam,et nomen Dómini invocábo. Laudansinvocábo Dóminum, et inimícis meis salvusero.

What shall I render to the Lord for all Hehas rendered unto me? I will take theChalice of Salvation, and call upon the nameof the Lord. Praising, I will call upon theLord and I shall be saved from my enemies.

Crossing himself with the Chalice he says:

Sanguis Dómini nostri Iesu Christicustódiat ánimam meam in vitam ætérnam.Amen.

May the Blood of our Lord Jesus Christpreserve my soul unto life everlasting.Amen.

He receives the Precious Blood.

COMMUNION OF THE FAITHFULThe reception of Holy Communion is a sign that the communicant accepts and believes all that

the Roman Catholic Church holds and teaches.

GENERAL NORMS FOR RECEIVING HOLY COMMUNION IN THE ROMAN CATHOLIC CHIRCH

Those who receive should: 1) be baptized Catholics in full communion and in good standing with the Church.

2) be in a state of Sanctifying Grace (i.e., not conscious of a mortal sin). 3) have fasted at least one hour before receiving the Sacrament.

In the ancient Latin rite celebrated according to the liturgical books of 1962, theCommunicant receives the Sacred Host on the tongue while, if you are able, kneeling.

The “Amen” is said by the priest.

The form used by the Priest distributing Holy Communion is:

After Communion the Priest returns to the altar and reposes any remaining Hosts in theTabernacle, after which the Consecration Candle is removed from the altar. He then continues

with the ablutions, during which he purifies the Paten, Ciborium, Chalice and of course, hishands. This action is a reminder of the Catholic Church’s Jewish origins. specifically the ritual

cleansing in and of the Temple.

THE ABLUTIONS A server pours wine into the Chalice while the Celebrant recites the following prayer:

Quod ore súmpsimus, Dómine, pura mentecapiámus: et de múnere temporáli fiat nobisremédium sempitérnum.

Grant, O Lord, that what we have takenwith our mouth we may receive with a puremind; and that from a temporal gift it maybecome for us an eternal remedy.

Having purified the Chalice by drinking the wine which has mixed with any traces of the PreciousBlood, the Celebrant now moves to the Epistle side where the Servers pour water and wine over

his fingers, into the Chalice, to purify them. The Celebrant says:

Corpus tuum, Dómine, quod sumpsi, etSánguis, quem potávi, adhæreat viscéribusmeis: et præsta; ut in me non remáneatscélerum mácula, quem pura et sanctarefecérunt sacraménta: Qui vivis et regnasin sæcula sæculórum. Amen.

May thy Body, O Lord, which I havereceived, and Thy Blood which I have drunk,cleave to my very soul; and grant that no stainof sin may remain in me, whom Thy pure andHoly Sacraments have refreshed; Who livesand reigns world without end. Amen.

He then drinks the wine and water, after which he dries the inside of the chalice with thepurificator. He lays it across the chalice and places upon it the paten and pall, veils the

chalice and leaves it in the middle of the altar. He goes to the Epistle side.THE COMMUNION PRAYER

Sedébit Dóminus Rex in ætérnum:Dóminus benedícet pópulo suo in pace. The Lord shall sit as king for ever: The

Lord shall bless His people in peace.

THE POSTCOMMUNION PRAYERHe goes to the middle of the altar, and turning to the people chants:

V. Dóminus vóbiscum.R. Et cum spíritu tuo. He returns to theEpistle side. Orémus.

V. The Lord be with you.R. And with your spirit. He returns to theEpistle side. Let us pray.

He kisses the altar, and all kneel as the Celebrant then gives the final blessing:
