Welcome

Prayer

Song - Medley: “It Came Upon The Midnight Clear” and “What Child Is This”

*Invocation

We meet in the strong name of our God,

We praise you, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Amen.

*Litany

Lord Jesus, when you came to the world you created;

The world did not know you.

You came to love and rescue your own people;

But your own people did not receive you.

You came to be our king;

But the people rejected you.

Forgive us, Lord, when we become focused on things that do not matter;

Forgive us, when we are too busy, and you are pushed to the edge of our lives.

Dearest Jesus, holy child, prepare a bed, soft, undefiled;

A holy place within our hearts, enthroned as king and never to part. Amen.

*Prayer of the Day

Lord Jesus, you left the splendor of heaven knowing your destiny was the cross at

Golgotha. Before you were born, you knew that you would lay down your life for

each one of us. Thank you for coming to our world. Thank you for coming to save us.

We are more than conquerors in your love. Fill us with joy and peace as we trust

you. In Jesus’ name. Amen.

First Lesson - Lamentations 3:21-26 21 Yet this I call to mind and therefore I have hope: 22 Because of the LORD’s great love

we are not consumed, for his compassions never fail. 23 They are new every morning;

great is your faithfulness. 24 I say to myself, “The LORD is my portion; therefore I will wait for

him.”25 The LORD is good to those whose hope is in him, to the one who seeks him; 26 it is

good to wait quietly for the salvation of the LORD.

Second Lesson - Revelation 12:1-5, 10-13, 17 1 A great sign appeared in heaven: a woman clothed with the sun, with the moon

under her feet and a crown of twelve stars on her head. 2 She was pregnant and cried

out in pain as she was about to give birth. 3 Then another sign appeared in heaven: an

enormous red dragon with seven heads and ten horns and seven crowns on its heads. 4 Its tail swept a third of the stars out of the sky and flung them to the earth. The dragon

stood in front of the woman who was about to give birth, so that it might devour her

child the moment he was born. 5 She gave birth to a son, a male child, who “will rule all

the nations with an iron scepter.” And her child was snatched up to God and to his

throne. 10 Then I heard a loud voice in heaven say: “Now have come the salvation and

the power and the kingdom of our God, and the authority of his Messiah. For the

accuser of our brothers and sisters, who accuses them before our God day and night,

has been hurled down. 11 They triumphed over him by the blood of the Lamb and by

the word of their testimony; they did not love their lives so much as to shrink from death. 12 Therefore rejoice, you heavens and you who dwell in them! But woe to the earth and

the sea, because the devil has gone down to you! He is filled with fury, because he

knows that his time is short.” 13 When the dragon saw that he had been hurled to the

earth, he pursued the woman who had given birth to the male child. 17 Then the dragon

was enraged at the woman and went off to wage war against the rest of her offspring -

those who keep God’s commands and hold fast their testimony about Jesus.

Gospel - Luke 2:21-35 21 On the eighth day, when it was time to circumcise the child, he was named Jesus, the

name the angel had given him before he was conceived. 22 When the time came for

the purification rites required by the Law of Moses, Joseph and Mary took him to

Jerusalem to present him to the Lord 23 (as it is written in the Law of the Lord, “Every

firstborn male is to be consecrated to the Lord”), 24 and to offer a sacrifice in keeping

with what is said in the Law of the Lord: “a pair of doves or two young pigeons.” 25 Now

there was a man in Jerusalem called Simeon, who was righteous and devout. He was

waiting for the consolation of Israel, and the Holy Spirit was on him. 26 It had been

revealed to him by the Holy Spirit that he would not die before he had seen the Lord’s

Messiah. 27 Moved by the Spirit, he went into the temple courts. When the parents

brought in the child Jesus to do for him what the custom of the Law required, 28 Simeon

took him in his arms and praised God, saying: 29 “Sovereign Lord, as you have promised,

you may now dismiss your servant in peace. 30 For my eyes have seen your salvation, 31 which you have prepared in the sight of all nations: 32 a light for revelation to the

Gentiles, and the glory of your people Israel.” 33 The child’s father and mother marveled

at what was said about him. 34 Then Simeon blessed them and said to Mary, his mother:

“This child is destined to cause the falling and rising of many in Israel, and to be a sign

that will be spoken against, 35 so that the thoughts of many hearts will be revealed. And

a sword will pierce your own soul too.”
