Cango Kangaroo lives in Torbay with her friends,

the Hop Adventurers.

Cango and her friends enjoy a ride on the bus every day.

Their favourite bus is the open top Hop Bus. They can sit on the

top deck in the sunshine and see the beach.

Cango has her very own open top bus with her picture on the side.

When Cango arrived in Torbay she was worried she would be lonely.

On her second day in her new home, she decided that she

wanted to explore her surroundings.

‘I want to make friends’ she thought, ‘I know, I’ll go to the zoo.

Maybe I’ll meet another kangaroo like me.’

Cango made her way to the bus stop and got on the big yellow

open top bus. She had never been on a bus before!

‘Hi’ she said to the driver ‘My name is Cango and

I’d like to go to the zoo please’.

‘Pleased to meet you Cango’ smiled the driver,

‘My name is Sally and I’d be happy to take you

to the zoo. Hop aboard!’

Cango bought her ticket and made her way

up the stairs to the top deck.

She could see for miles and sat watching all the people

enjoying their holidays by the sea.

Cango was sad to leave the bus when it arrived at the zoo.

She had enjoyed her journey and the views from the top deck.

Then she remembered all the adventures waiting for

her and happily hopped off to buy her ticket.

‘I really hope I make some friends today’ she thought as

she picked up a map and set off to look for other kangaroos.

The zoo was full of all kinds of animals. Cango saw tigers,

lions, rhinos, elephants and monkeys.

Cango checked her map and saw the kangaroos were

just around the corner from the monkeys.

Cango spotted two kangaroos and called

‘Hey – I’m Cango – pleased to meet you!’

The kangaroos were busy eating their lunch

and just looked at her curiously.

Cango tried again. ‘Hi there, what are your names?’

The kangaroos flicked their ears and hopped over to a nearby tree.

‘They don’t understand you’ said a voice behind her.

Cango span around and came face to face with a

brown rabbit wearing a bright yellow T-shirt.

‘Hi!’ the rabbit said with a friendly smile,

‘My name is Gary, what’s yours?’

‘Cango’ she replied, blinking with confusion.

‘These are zoo kangaroos’ explained Gary

‘They don’t talk in the same way that we do.’

‘Oh’ said Cango disappointedly ‘I’m new here,

I was hoping to make some friends today.’

‘Well you’re in luck then!’ Gary said with a grin ‘

I love to make new friends!’

‘Really?’ said Cango with a hopeful smile.

‘Yes, let’s explore the rest of the zoo!’ Gary said.

The two new friends made their way towards the

crocodiles. Suddenly a large, brightly coloured frog,

eating an ice cream hopped around the corner.

‘Hi Gary’ said the frog and waving a greeting

‘Who’s your new friend?’

‘Hi Freddie!’ Gary said, ‘This is my new friend Cango.

She’s just moved here.’

‘Nice to meet you Cango’ Freddie croaked and

extended his arm ‘Do you want to join us for lunch?’

Cango nodded shyly at Gary’s friend.

‘Are the rest of the gang here?’ asked Gary. Freddie nodded and

pointed a webbed foot in the direction of the zoo restaurant.

‘Great! Come on Cango – let’s go and meet everyone!’

They headed over to a bench shaded by a large tree.

On it sat an excitable looking penguin and a cricket

eating a hot dog.

Gary said ‘Cango, meet the rest of the Hop Adventurer gang:

Porter Penguin and Chirpy Cricket.’ The animals

waved at Cango with their flippers and antennae.

Cango joined her new friends for lunch. Afterwards,

they went round the rest of the zoo to visit all of the

animals that lived there.

Cango had had a fantastic day and had made five

new friends but all too soon it was time for her to catch

her bus home.

Once she was safely on board, she waved goodbye to

Gary, Porter, Freddie and Chripy.

Gary said ‘We’re so happy you’ve joined our gang

Cango –and we can’t wait for our next adventure!’

‘Nor can I!’ said Cango as she settled down for the trip

back home. Living here was going to be lots of fun.
