In the past six months, I have been using the Today’s Light Devo onal Bible of the LWML to help me spend and enjoy my quiet

me with God. I have not done quiet me every day, but I have enjoyed the days and heard God speak to me. When I read the Bible verses at the top of my ar cle from the book of Micah a few days ago, these

verses impacted me as I was reminded that there are many Gospel words concerning forgiveness in the Old Testament, not just in the New Testament.

As we prepare to a end the LWML Conven on in Albuquerque, New Mexico, later this month, remember the conven on theme: “Jesus Christ Above All!” The LWML Na onal Conven on theme is inspired by Philippians 2:9 -

Therefore God has highly exalted Him and bestowed on Him the name that is above every name.

Since this conven on is in our western region and it is an important milestone of 75 years for the LWML, I hope that many of you plan to join the fun in Albuquerque.

Check out the LWML website www.lwml.org to see updates on the ac vi es planned.

If you are unable to a end, keep your eyes peeled for informa on to help you watch the conven on online. The en re conven on will be live-streamed on the internet.

More details to follow.

May you enjoy serving the Lord with gladness,

WHAT IS A RETREAT??

The Christian retreat can be defined in the simplest of terms as a definite time (from a few hours in length to a month) spent away from one's normal life for the purpose of re-connecting, usually in prayer, meditation and Bible study. It is the practice of leaving one's everyday life to connect on a deeper level with God.

Matthew 14:22-23: Jesus went up on a mountainside by Himself to pray.

Matthew 17:1-8, Luke 9:28-36, Mark 9:2-13: Jesus re-treated to the Garden of Gethsemane to pray for God's will to be done; a time of solitude, prayer, instruction and strengthening.

Rest, renew, recharge, refresh, regroup, regenerate,

revive, restore, rejuvenate, reinvigorate, renovate, rekindle, replenish...Guess you get the idea!

Enjoy fellowship with Christian sisters: Worship/communion in a retreat setting, fun with no cooking and good food, amphitheater devotions by the fire pit, no kids, no housework, play games, sing-alongs, and crafts.

Did I mention fun?

Vice President of Christian Life

Tidbits from Miss Penny and the Gospel Outreach Committee

Greetings, wonderful LWML CNH ladies,

What a thrill to report to you that we are halfway through our 2016-2018 biennium (24 months) for collecting mites for our 16 projects.

Here’s a quick review:

• Funded grants #1 through #8

• Grants already funded total $52,215 = 45 % of goal

• Current mites are being collected for Grant #9: Joy of Harvest Hmong Language School, St. Paul, Merced, for $10,000.

Let’s surprise the Hmong fami-lies and kids by funding this grant quickly, so they can have funds for the start of a new school year in September.

• Next is grant #10 which is our largest grant request: $20,000 for LINC Bay Area Theological Training.

We need to roll up our sleeves to fund some important grants and needs in the coming months. We should not be taking a vacation from collecting mites this summer! We must work while the sun is shining on us.

Vice President of Gospel Outreach

Beverly Vietor

I, as your Miss Penny and my friends Tinkerbelle and the Mites Fairy, visited several Spring rallies. Wow, what a thrill to meet and greet all you wonderful ladies! Each rally had a unique and interesting program, along with yummy food. Thanks for the invitations and I hope to meet more of you at your Fall rallies.

Additionally, be sure to join all of us at the LWML CNH Retreat @ Silver Spur August 25-27, 2017. Ru-mor has it that there will be a workshop/training ses-sion on writing and submitting grant proposals. Bring your drafted grant request and we will be sure to have it reviewed for guideline requirements and make helpful suggestions. Remember that our grant focus for the next biennium is on strengthening our schools/educational programs for the next generation.

With anticipation, I hope to see many of you wonderful ladies at the LWML Convention in Albuquerque. We have big plans to give out some grant checks during the convention to a few recipients who will have their National staff at their booths.

Do you feel all the joy from our mighty mites in our small Mite Boxes? I sure do!!!

Keep the Convention Planning Committee in your prayers so that everything we do will be

according to God’s will.

See you there!

“REJOICE . . . PRAY . . . BE AT PEACE”

Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God,

which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. Philippians 4:6-7

Plans are under way for the 2018 convention. Make plans to attend by put-ting aside some funds every month to pay for the convention. We need all of you to purchase the meal package. This is what gives us access to the meet-ing rooms, ballroom, etc. without additional fees. I realize that hotel food is a bit pricy, but the meal package includes: Saturday breakfast, lunch, dinner banquet and Sunday breakfast.

The host zones of 1, 2, 7, 8, 17 and 18 are excited about an inspirational weekend. Don Wharton and Dave Anderson will inspire and entertain you. The registration form and other information will come in the first call packet, after the first of the year.

We will again have a pledge walk led by the Young Woman Reps on Saturday morning. Forms to sign up for this will also be in the first call packet. The Christian Life Committee is planning a “Sing, Worship and Prayer, Praise” time for Friday afternoon. This is designed to get you in the spirit for the convention.

Thank you for getting your Quarterly and Pro-Rate Remittances in by the deadline. This was especially important for transmitting the Quarterly up- dates to St. Louis by their deadline. Since this was not a district convention year, you can still send your Pro- Rate remittances to me. Just a note: In order for your delegates to receive their 2018 district convention reimbursements, you will need to pay your pro-rate fees for both years of the biennium.

You’ve done an awesome job of funding eight of the 16 Mission Grants to date. With the summer season upon us, many societies take a break and mite dona-tions traditionally slow down. Let’s change that this year and have a banner mite–giving summer season.

Our Bites for Mites program continues all year and you can be creative with it.

The Ferndale society held a Bites for Mites Super Bowl Food Auction. Maybe during these warmer months, you could have an ice cream social for Bites for Mites. I know there are a lot of creative ladies whose ideas can help us meet our mite goal.

Joyful Response through the Lutheran Church Extension Fund is another way to keep mites coming on a regular basis. This service provides an electronic, automated method to make mite contributions.

The electronic sign-up form can be found in the Fall 2016 issue of Joyful Servant.

LWML Socie es collect mites and submit them, as well as dona ons, to the LWML CNH Financial Secretary using the Remi ance Form available on the LWML CNH website.

The Financial Secretary summarizes the dona ons that have been submi ed.

⇒ Mites: to fund mission grants in the CNH and Na onal LWML

⇒ Rubin Scholarship: to assist CNH college students pursuing full- me church work

⇒ Steinbeck Scholarship: to assist children of missionaries to further their educa on

⇒ Memorial Gi in memory: directed to LWML Missions, CNH Missions, Scholarship, Endowment

⇒ LWML CNH Endowment: a fund producing income to fund more inreach and outreach ministries

⇒ Other: specified for a specific project or program

Regarding the distribu on of mites:

• 25% goes to LWML Mission Grants

• 25% goes to LWML CNH General Fund (administra ve costs)

• 50% goes toward LWML CNH Mission Grants

This biennium, 2016-2018, a goal of $115,000 was approved at the 2016 CNH Conven on to support six-teen mission grants. We are over halfway through this biennium. Eight grants have been funded thanks to all the mites you have collected! There remains a balance of $60,820 needed to fund the remaining eight mission grants. Please keep your Mite Box busy through the summer and fall. March 31, 2018, is the deadline for this biennium.

Joyful Response is a program through Lutheran Church Extension Fund which enables a society or an individual to automa cally have a designated amount sent monthly from their checking account to an LCEF Steward account for mites. With so many events to plan and a end, this is an excellent way to regularly submit your mites without having to remember your checkbook. See Financial Secretary’s page for more informa on.

The Adventure of Mites goes well beyond our LWML CNH to support missions. The 25% going to LWML is divided: 30% to administra ve costs and 70% to LWML missions.

LWML CNH also generates income for scholarships by collec ng interest on several LCEF savings ac-counts. LCEF funds generate income through low interest loans for ministries. The LWML CNH Endowment Fund is managed by The LCMS Founda on. The managed funds yield semi-annual dividends and quarterly interest. The LCMS Founda on manages this investment in fixed and equity funds.

CHOOSING NOMINEES FOR LWML OFFICE

“Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God’s grace in its various forms. If anyone speaks, they should do so as one who speaks the very words of God. If anyone serves, they should do so with the strength God provides, so that in all things God may be praised through Jesus Christ.” 1Peter 4:10 - 11

The Nominating Committee will let this incident from God’s Word guide us as we meet in deliberations for the selection of nominees to be elected at the LWML CNH Convention at the Fremont-Newark Double Tree Hotel April 27-29, 2018. The offices to be filled are : • President • Vice President of Convention Planning • Vice President of Servant Resources • Recording Secretary • Financial Secretary

Faith Lutheran Church

It was a very busy and produc ve 2016 for our Women of Faith. We hold two rummage sales a year and our total income from this year’s sales was $8,082. With these funds, we support many projects both within

the church and in our local community. A few examples are:

♦ Vaca on Bible School

♦ Mites for LWML

♦ the Heifer Project.

In May, we had Dr. Virginia A. Simpson, an interna onally recognized authority on dying and grieving, speak to our membership. Her topic was “Talking about Death won’t Kill You.” She also brought her book which came out in April called, The Space Between: A memoir of Mother-Daughter love at the end of life.

Our fall ac vity was a hoedown for the congrega on. Our men prepared a great BBQ of chicken and ribs and our women brought salads, baked beans and desserts. There was music supplied by our very talented musi-cians from Faith. A er dinner, we had fun learning to line dance with a professional teacher. A great evening was enjoyed by all.

Sharon Hunter, President

Benicia Lutheran Church

Our Zone Spring Rally held at Benicia Lutheran Church in Benicia, on Saturday, March 11, was an outstanding success. Cindy Steinbeck led the women in Bible study, drawing from the verse from 1 Corinthians 10:4 - and all drank the same spiritual drink. For they drank from the spiritual Rock that followed them, and the Rock was Christ. Cindy speaks from the heart and from her own spiritual journey; she used sto-ries and photos to lead us deep into the Word of God. It was a joyful experience to hear the ways the Lord has led her and how awesomely he leads us.

Pastor David A. Floyd led the praise singers by playing the guitar and giving us encouragement. The praise music was upli ing.

A Mite Challenge was very successful and the majority of the regular offering went to help flood vic-ms. And I don’t want to forget - the array of salads and goodies was mouth watering. We even had painted

rocks to take home with encouragements painted on the rocks: What could be be er?

Our Savior Lutheran Church

We were blessed this year by a newcomer from Minnesota who was very ac ve making Lutheran World Relief quilts in her home church. She has s m-ulated us to create more quilts than last year and it is only May! Her group in Minnesota turned out eight to ten quilts each week! We are planning to make Christmas ornaments from Christmas fabric that cannot go into quilts and thereby support the youth ac vi es.

We had a wonderful time of fellowship and en-joyed hearing from our speakers, Mission-ary Herb Burch and his wife Markie. They had a wonderful power point to go along with their interesting talk. They real-ly encouraged us to remember our missionaries in the field.

There were approximately 45 attendees including our Cir-cuit Counselor, Rev. Mark Whittaker, and our Zone 9 Pastoral Advisor Rev. Wayne Riddering, plus four or five husbands.

We also had a wonderful skit by the ladies of Our Savior Lutheran called: “Witness Woman.”

Such a Joyous time we had sharing with our LWML Sisters, leaning about what Zion Lutheran is doing with their mission outreach projects. We were blessed with two pastors

in attendance.

Pastor Josh Brown from St. Luke’s, Reno, and Mark Kliewer of Zion, Winnemucca, led us in Bible Study and Divine Service with Holy Communion. We were touched by the teaching of "The Call."

Our Zone covers almost 600 miles round trip:

from Elko-Chester, Nevada,

to Susanville, California,

from Hawthorne, Nevada,

to Gardnerville, Nevada.

We will have our LWML CNH Retreat August 25-27, 2017, in Tu-olumne, California. There is much to do in preparation.

We are looking forward to reaching out in "The Call" to areas that have not been visited in 2018.

The 2017 Spring LWML Zone Rally was held at First Lutheran Church, Yuba City, on Saturday, March 18, and was co-hosted by the LWML Societies of Yuba City and Brownsville.

The theme was “Go ye Therefore . . Por tanto, vayan,” with the Bible

study led by Pastor Mike Franckowiak based on Matthew 28:19-20 Therefore go and make disciples of all nations . . .

Our special guest speakers were Pastor Herb and Markie Burch, missionaries to Peru. During their presentation, they painted a pic-ture of missionary life in Peru. Through slides, they shared how God’s Word is being planted by dynamic teams who are making the effort to build up national leadership by supporting young men and women who will lead the Lutheran Church in Peru in the future.

The offering gathered was given to Pastor Burch for the mission work in Peru.

There was an ingathering of non-perishable foods, baby socks and underwear and adult clothes for the CAN in Yuba City and the SDA food closet in Brownsville. Also, several societies made posters of the mission outreach projects they are doing in their communities.

The lunch provided by the ladies was very enjoyable and while we were enjoying the food and fellowship, we were visited by comfort dog, Reuben, and his handlers. Reuben is stationed at First Lutheran in Yuba City. He has been trained in two capacities and is dually vested. He is trained to work with kids, adults and seniors who have recently or are currently going through a crisis due to a personal or community-wide tragedy. He is also trained to work with Veterans and their unique needs.

It was very special to spend the day with our Christian sisters

Jesus with those we meet.

Remember, David danced! The day be-gan with a brief business meeting. The meeting was followed by a prayer service celebrating “75 Years Commending Christ from One Generation to Another.” Pastor Tyler of Grace, Crescent City, led the ser-vice with the help of two readers, Jane Goss of Crescent City and Peggi Lawrence of Eureka.

The Prayer Service was followed by a Tea Party in the Grace Church social hall. Debora Tyler was our mistress of ceremonies. We are fortunate to have Peggi Lawrence in our zone; she is a past historian for the National LWML. The historical information flowed, giving us an education in LWML history. She encouraged a number of attendees to share their experiences in LWML as well.

Melinda Peterson of Crescent City periodically quizzed us with events and happenings from the past. The tea party would not have been complete without our Pamala Merindorf of Crescent City handing out raffle prizes. Jayne Kettner shared her talent of photography, shooting many candid shots of attendees. Each table was brightened with flower arrangements by Beverly Hansen-Givens and her gals from St. Marks in Ferndale. All the pastry and sandwiches were lovingly made by LWML members from Grace. The day was very rainy; much concern and prayers went with our sisters from Humboldt County for a safe return home. The reason I mention this is that US Route 101 about 10-15 miles south of Crescent is disinte-grating in several places. Zone 13 continues to quilt for LWR and the local communities. Our group met May 20th at Lutheran Church of Arcata. We are very appreciative to June Schimke for organizing a room, drinks and dessert for the quilting party. As part of the quilting party, we bundled health kits. Because of the distance, our dona-tions for the Ingathering at the LWML National Convention will be distributed locally. We invited Reverend Putman from LINC Bay Area to tell us about his ministry and he brought with him Pastor Temesgen Dabsu who had planted a church. Pastor Dabsu preaches in several languages so that he can reach all the

people.

There are over 100 languages spoken in the Bay Area.

As Paul did in his letters, we then wrote “living epistles” to nine churches to ncourage them!

We are planning something for the fall.

March 25th was a day of inspiration, benevo-lence, and fellowship for

43 ladies and guests. It was hosted by Grace Lutheran LWML in Visalia who served a lunch of build-your-own sandwiches, salads and brownie sundaes for dessert.

Theme Scripture was James 1:17 – Every good action and every perfect gift is from God.

Pastoral Counselor, Rev. Matt Gulseth, was with his wife delivering their first baby that day. LaVada Terrell, Zone 15 President, stepped in and led a Bible Study on The Gift of Service. We must not feel that the little tasks we do are not important. All we do is for the glory of God and to serve others – be it at home caring for family, neighbors and friends or at church working with LWML, Altar Guild, nursery, kitchen, Sunday school, janitorial, gardening, etc. In James 1:17, we are directed to the Giver of all gifts, blessings, and miracles. His gifts to us are always thoughtful, meaningful and have purpose. When we concluded by singing the LWML song Serve the Lord with Gladness, hopefully the words had new meaning for us.

The speaker, Cheryl Braden, Executive Director of the Care Pregnancy Resource Center in Visalia, presented a slide show of the center and interac-tion with teens. They share the love of Christ and offer alternatives to abor-tion, promising to be with these gals along their journey. Ingathering brought baby items and an offering of almost $950 in cash and Walmart gift cards..

Hmong ladies from Peace

Lutheran, Fresno, received $6300 to purchase Hmong Bibles and catechisms, which they give to inquiring visi-tors at their Hmong New Years booth at the Fresno Fair-grounds the week following Christmas. Another check was presented to Our Saviour's LWML for $6200 to further their ability to provide meals, Bibles, and grocery supplies to their local guests at the Community Cafe. Our mighty mites in action!! It is always a joy to gather with our sisters in Christ and have the opportunity to visit, share, and enjoy the day's festivities. To God be the glory!

This is a program started aproximately ten years ago by Tucoemas Federal Credit Union. Hats are made and donated to the Cancer Treatment Center in Visalia and are used for those

experiencing hair loss due to their cancer treatments.

Some LWML members of Grace Lutheran Church began to make hats for this program. As time went on, there were others who wanted to make hats and contribute them as well. Hats were made and donated by members of Christ Lutheran Church, Visalia, ladies from Tulare, California, Phoenix and Scottsdale, Arizona, and from Grace Lutheran Church, Visalia.

As of September 30, 2016, Tucoemas discontinued their involvement with the "Hats for Hope" program. However, some of the LWML members from Grace Lutheran Church and Christ Lutheran Church wanted to continue making hats and donating them to the Cancer Treatment Center.

From October 2013 to March 2017, 3,999 hats have been made and donated. Carolyn Anderson, LWML “Hats for Hope” Program Chairman

Women of Grace from Emmanuel Lutheran in Clovis hosted a Fiesta Dinner for the church and community on Saturday, May 6th. There were 100 people in attendance who engorged themselves with delicious Mexican food and desserts.

A silent auction and bake sale were available. Monies from this event will be earmarked to pro-vide support to Terry’s House, Evangel Home, the Clovis Police Foundation and other agencies as needed.

On Saturday, June 17, 2017, a breakfast buffet will be prepared for the residents of Terry’s House.

Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church, LCMS, in Caruthers, California, is excited to announce that they have received grant #6 “Community Café Rural Outreach: Nourishing Body and Soul” and were presented with these grant monies on Saturday, March 25, at the Zone 15 LWML Spring rally held at Grace Lutheran Church in Visalia. The community of women who make up Our Saviour’s Lutheran LWML wish to express their apprecia-tion to the many people who have contributed mite offerings. Mites offered each day, each week, monthly and yearly supported this grant and the others of the LWML CNH. From the Executive Committee on down to the numerous women and men filling their mite boxes, our members and guests at the Community Café praise these generous offerings. It’s those mites that will now supply them with food, nourishing body and

soul. Each week the Caruthers Community Café opens the doors for din-ner, groceries and fellowship. An average of 80+ people are fed each Wednesday night of every week. Each family present signs in and is given a bag of groceries as they depart following their meal. Those gro-cery sacks include daily staples but also include bread, milk and eggs as available. The Community Café continues to be a reliable source of nourishment, fellowship and comfort and can now move forward sup-porting the families who benefit so much from its presence in our com-munity. In addition to our food gifts, this grant will allow us to also distribute

Spanish/English Bibles to our guests and their families as needed.

OUR SAVIOUR’S, CARUTHERS, HOSTS BREAKFAST BENEFIT Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church in Caruthers, California, has just completed hosting their annual Aebleskiver Breakfast for 2017. Our ladies were pleased to feed over 130 people a wonderful breakfast of aebleskiver, ham, juice and coffee on Sunday, March 5, 2017, from 8 AM – 10 AM. The free-will offering this year benefited Rescue the Children, a part of The Fresno Rescue Mission, a ministry to women and families located in Fresno, providing them a place to get away from destructive lifestyles. Within this facility, they find a place to heal, grow, learn and ultimately become productive members of society with restored family unity through Jesus Christ. Our 2017 contribution was $1,350. Thank you to our supportive community for this gracious gift and to our Our Saviour’s Lutheran church community.

At the LWML CNH Zone 15 Spring Rally on March 25, 2017, at Grace Lutheran Church, Visalia, the LWML Hmong Ladies from Peace Lutheran Church, grant #5 received a check for $6,300 as a result of the mighty mites for the LWML CNH Mission Grants. These monies will be used to purchase Hmong/English Bibles and Catechisms that are given to new members and visitors who come to their booth at the annual Hmong New Year's Celebration at the Fresno Fair grounds the week following Christmas. As a result, many give their hearts to the Lord and start attending the Hmong Worship services, Bible studies and Catechism classes at Peace Lutheran Church.

The Hmong Ladies wish to thank the LWML CNH Executive Committee, Board of Directors and the Gospel Outreach Commit-tee for recommending their proposal grant to be includ-ed in the Mission Grants for 2016-2018.

And, a big thank you to everyone who contributes their mites monthly to the LWML CNH Mission Grants. We give God the glory for this opportunity to spread the Gospel to the Hmong community in and around the Fresno area.

This was a free Tea, open to Zone 19.

The men served us hot water, teas and yummy home-made goodies! Real china in a variety of pat-terns was used on the tables.

We were enter-tained by singers, accompanied by piano.

The guest speaker was Dee from Off Broadway in Placerville who showed us how to tie a variety of scarves; a fun program. They had drawings for the guests...scarves.

This Teddy Bear Tea hosted a baby shower for St. John’s Program for Real Change; the ingathering collected mon-ey and tons of baby items for them. The speakers were from St. John’s and told how the program changed their lives. Each table had a hostess who decorated her table with her own china and served hot water, teas and delicious home-made refreshments. We were entertained with a flute and piano duet. They gave away door prizes.
