Goa Gajah is a significant Hindu archaeological site, Located on the cool western edge of Bedulu Village,

six kilo meters out of central Ubud, Bali. It is a relic-filled courtyard and view the rock-wall carvings, a central meditational cave, bathing pools and fountains.

Goa Gajah is thought to date back to the 11th century, although relics predating this time were found within proximity of the site. The first mention of Goa Gajah and the Elephant Cave was in the Javanese poem Desawarnana written in .

remain unexplored. Literal piles of relics with unknown origins have been laid out in a surrounding garden. The leading theory suggests that Goa Gajah was used as a hermitage or sanctuary by Hindu priests who dug the cave entirely by hand.

Although accredited as a sacred Hindu site, a number of relics and the close proximity of a Buddhist temple suggest that the site held special significance to early Buddhists in Bali.

The menacing entrance to Goa Gajah looks like a demonic mouth, suggesting that people are entering an underworld as they venture inside through the darkness. Some claim that the entrance represents the Hindu earth god Bhoma while others say the mouth belongs to the child-eating witch Rangda from Balinese mythology.

For such a busy tourist attraction, the Elephant Cave itself is actually quite small.

The cave is shallow; inside are three stone idols each wrapped in red, yellow and black cloths. Black soot lines the cave’s walls as result from the current-day incense burning. Several indentations show where meditating priests once sat. The northern side of the complex is dominantly Buddhist while south across the river it’s mostly Shaivite. In 1995 Goa Gajah was listed as a tentative UNESCO World Heritage Site.

In many way, visiting Goa Gajah will gives you a “true Balinese” vibe. Where nature and culture blend together to form a peaceful harmony, a visit to be remembered, a visit to the ancient Balinese culture.

Komodo dragon is the oldest living lizards. The ancestors of the dragon lived 50 million years ago. It may

have descended from a larger lizard from Java or from Australia (Megalania prisca), which existed 30.000 years ago. There is no body know, where did the komodo came from. But there some theory developed such as komodo is island - hopped from Java to Komodo or that komodo swam from Australia to Timor till they reached Flores. Other theory said that over 18,000 years ago the sea level was lower than it is today, that makes their way easily from island to island.

Komodo dragons are easily found in Komodo Island, Rinca Island, and Gili Motang, the islands that formed Komodo National Park. The komodo do not exist anywhere else in the world. The Komodo National Park is UNESCO world heritage and today has attracted more than 50,000 visitors a year.

When you visit the island of Komodo and Rinca, you can find the dragon almost everywhere. They can be found in the

forest, in the savanna, on the beach, in the mangrove swamps, in the burrows, or even in the trees. Yes, the younger komodo or baby komodo that survive hatch, once they crack through their shells, they will quickly climbs into the trees, where they live for the next 2 to 4 years to avoid being eaten by larger dragons or other predator such as wild boar and feral dogs.

The survey taken in the year 2000 account over 1,000 komodo dragons exist in each island of Komodo and Rinca. It is found that the account is getting lower than years before and seems to be in the young and juvenile categories. The mating season of Komodo is normally from July to August. The female dragons start mating when they are 7 years old and the male start mating when they are eight. The female lays egg about 15 to 30 at a time. The incubation

of the eggs takes from 8 to 9 months and ussually hatch in March or April. The young dragons look very similar to small predator lizards with yellow spots and dark markings with an average length 30 cm and average weight is 80 grams.

Komodo dragons can see reasonably well, but when they rely more on smell than sight. They can hear, but often ignore sounds. Dragon can detect scents up to 5 kilometers away, but it can be further depending on the direction of the wind. That is why women during their period is not allowed to visit the island, to avoid being attacked by komodo which can be very active when smells blood.

Komodo is a hunter which mainly hunts deer, water buffalo, and wild boar, also domestic animals such as dogs, chicken, and goat. Komodo usually attack sleeping animals or wait in ambush. If they cannot

kill prey immedietly, they will try to bite on the leg or throat. The classic strategy of komodo is to bite and release. After they bite, they will wait for the animal to weaken and die beause of shock through blood loss and blood poisoning.

It is caused by the dragon’s saliva that is highly septic. There are over 60 types of bacteria in the dragons’ saliva and one of them can cause septicemia. Once, a person is bitten, he got 12 hours to get medicine before he amputates.

What you have to do when komodo approaches? Climb trees is the best to do to go out of the way. Zig zag running can be an option, but komodo may follow. The komodo runs in straight line, with a speed 18 kilometers per hour, but they do not run far.

That is why when you are visiting the island, you have to be accompanied by ranger, who has experience in dealing with dragons and carry stick to stop the dragon from threatened.

Komodo is never threatening badly by local; they threat the dragons with respect. Eating dragon is forbidden, since the dragon is totem animals and traditionally to be ancestor of human.

Exceptionally strong and are famous for their ability to break through high waves and sail vast distances, phinisi boat is a

masterpiece of traditional Bugis-Makassar design.

The phinisi boats have served as a means of transportation for generations for the Bugis-Makassar people. The boats are used not only to connect islands and countries but also for trading purposes.

The typical features of phinisi ships that distinguish them from other traditional wooden boats in the country is their two masts and seven sails of different sizes in orderly arrangement.

With their unique shape and strength, phinisi vessels are almost entirely built traditionally, in method and equipment.

The boat craftsmen handles everything according to traditional methods and do not have special engineering training. They don’t need complicated designs or technical calculations to determine the quantity of materials needed.

In building a ship or boat, craftsmen use a method that would be impossible in the mainstream shipbuilding industry. Mostly it was done by only using their feeling based on vision and judgement, the builders begin with the bottom and sides of the

boat instead of the frame. But they rightly establish the boat’s balance so it will float perfectly when launched into the water.

An expertise inherited through generations and centuries, a knowledge that is further honed through daily practice with the help of builders’ instincts and natural gifts.

Phinisi shipbuilders also faithful to local customs believed. One of the customs strictly adhered to is the holding of rituals before building a boat and before its launch into the sea, asking for smooth construction and safety.

A phinisi boat needs several types of

wood like the ironwood from Southeast Sulawesi and ulin (a variety of ironwood) from Kalimantan.

The Construction of a phinisi boat itself usually takes months before the vessel can be used.

Phinisi vessels prove that Bugis-Makassar tradition and culture have survived current technology and modernity as well as an Indonesian pride of the ocean.

April 5th 1815, won’t be a regular day for the people of Sumbawa Island. Their peaceful life were about to be

interrupted by the devastating force of nature.

Standing tall on the northern shore of the island, the majestic Mount Tombora began to rumble and generated a dark cloud.

A huge eruption occurred, followed by thunderous detonation sounds, heard in Makassar on Sulawesi, 380 km (240 mi) away, Batavia (now Jakarta) on Java 1,260 km (780 mi) away, and Ternate on the Molucca Islands 1,400 km (870 mi) away. On the morning of 6 April, volcanic ash began to fall all the way to East Java with faint detonation sounds lasting until 10 April.

In the evening of April 10th 1815, the eruptions intensified. Thethree columns river ofmolten magma rose up and merged,the whole mountain was turned into a flowing mass of “liquid fire”. To make things worse, pile of pumice stones of up to 20 cm (7.9 in) in diameter started to rain down, followed by Pyroclastic flows cascaded down the mountain to the shores of the peninsula, wiping out the Tambora villages.Loud explosions were heard until the next evening, then the caldera collapse and causing tsunamis that whipped the entire peninsula. The next daythe ash veil had spread as far as West Java and South Sulawesi.The heavy volcanic ash falls reached as far away as Borneo, Sulawesi, Java, and Maluku Islands. The death toll was at least 71,000 people and almost half of the mountain is perish.

It even causes global temperatures to drop by an average of by 0.4–0.7 °C (0.7–1.3 °F).In the northern hemisphere,it causes the famous “The Year without a summer”.It was an agricultural disaster,the greatest effect on most of New England, Atlantic Canada, and parts of Western Europe.A cool temperatures and heavy rains resulted in failed harvests in Britain and Ireland,the eastern U.S the ashes form a fog that reddened and dimmed the sunlight. In Asia, China’s monsoon season is disrupted, resulting in overwhelming floods in the Yangtze Valley. In India, the delayed summer monsoon caused late torrential rains that aggravated

the spread of cholera from a region near the River Ganges in Bengal to as far as Moscow.Proclaiming that the 1815 Tambora eruption is the largest observed eruption in recorded history of mankind.

As mention above, Mount Tambora is located on Sumbawa Island, as part of the Lesser Sunda Islands; with an elevation of 2,850 m (9,350 ft) from above sea level. It has a massive7 km (4 miles) wide and25 km (16 miles) round crater, 800 meter (0,5 miles) depth crater.

The two nearest cities are Dompu and Bima, could be the starting point to do hiking. Three ascent routes are used to reach the caldera. The


first route starts from Doro Mboha village south of the mountain. The second route is southwest of the mountain, starting from Doro Peti village; the Tambora volcanic monitoring station is in Doro Peti. The third route starts from Pancasila village northwest of the mountain, and passes through a coffee plantation.

Normally it takes about two days through dense foreststo reach the caldera. On the summit of Mount Tambora, mind-blowing sceneries await. Several parts of the edges of the caldera are beautifully decorated with edelweiss flowers and amazing layers of rocks. An excellent blending view of rugged mountain, astounding lake-caldera, and the vast blue sea on the horizon is truly a glorious prize to gain after hours of

challenging hikes.The marvels of Mount Tambora also lie

in the two conservation areas situated at the foot of the mountain. The first is the 18,178.66 hectares Mount Tambora South Wildlife Reserve. The second is the South Tambora Hunting Park situated south of the Wildlife Reserve. As the name suggests, the site is a perfect place for those who wish to conduct hunting safaris.

Despite it’s terrifying past, Mount Tamborawith all of its beautiful natural surroundings, thus making Mount Tambora now has become one of the must-climbed mountain in Indonesia. It might have shaken the world 200 years ago, but now Mount Tambora greets the world.

Comes from a tradition of taboo to waste uneaten food, nasi goreng has become the most favorite food

in Indonesia. Nasi goreng or fried rice is another common Indonesian food you must try while your visit in Indonesia. You may find a simple nasi goreng from stall accross the street to more complete serving nasi goreng in the restaurant. It is simply made by frying pre - cooked rice in small amout of cooking oil, spiced with kecap manis (sweet soy sauce), with addition of egg, shreded vegetables, or meat and finally served with krupuk (shrimp crakers) or emping.

Nasi goreng can be eaten at any time of day, but for Indonesian family usually eat nasi goreng for breakfast. If you stay in hotel, nasi goreng is also prepared in the buffet or served as Indonesian breakfast. Restaurant will provide nasi goreng as the main meal with a lot better serving such as fried egg,

fried chicken, and satay.There are various version of it can be

found such as the nasi goreng kambing which is mixed with goat meat, nasi goreng ikan asin is a pale looked with salted fish or nasi goreng seafood a complete mix of cuttlefish, prawns, shellfish, and fish.

Some region also had their own special nasi goreng. One such as the Nasi Goreng Medan from North Sumatra, where it was cooked with salted anchovy. Nasi goreng Aceh with special curry-like taste. Nasi goreng Jawa Timur (East Java) replacing soy sauce with tomato sauce, so the nasi goreng looks red instead of golden brown. Another variation from East Java is the nasi goreng ruwet, a combination between nasi goreng and mie goreng (fried noodle).

Nasi goreng is truly the nation’s favorite, an ultimate delicacy. Selamat makan.

Three species of sea turtle are known to be indigenous of Indonesia. The green sea turtles is one the endangered species that can be found round the coast of West Java, it was named after it bright green shells. They used to lay eggs on pangumbahan beach where a turtle conservation had been established and it has become a favorite tourism sights. Leatherback sea turtle and Hawksbill sea turtle also known to be indigenous.

A remarkable looking specimen having a silver body with vertical black stripes. The Banggai Car-dinal Fish body is covered in small white spots. It can only be found in a rather small area around Banggai Island off Sulawesi. Due to its exotic fea-tures, the demand is high on the fish market. To prevent a drastic loss of its population, the local government is preparing a bill to limit the fishing activity and protecting this beauty.

Three new species of pygmy seahorse are indigenous to Indonesia: Hippocampus pontohi and Hippocampus pontohi severnsi from Bunaken Island, off Sulawesi, and Hippocampus pontohisatomiae from Derawan Island, off Kalimantan which is the smallest knwon seahorse in the world with only 11 millimetres in length.

The Coelacanth commonly known as the Living Fossil Fish or in Indonesia as “ Raja Laut “ King of the Sea has been around since the dinosaur period, some say at least 7 milion years. It was thought to be an extinct species until it was first captured alive on 1998 by local fisherman in Sulawesi.

Also known as bamboo sharks or longtail carpet sharks, belong to the family Hemiscylliidae in the shark order Orectolobiformes. Rather than swim, these slender-bodied sharks ‘walk’ by wriggling their bodies and pushing with their pectoral and pelvic fins. They are relatively small, with the largest species measuring about 48 inches (1.22 m). It can only be found in the shore of Halmahera Island of Sulawesi.

Pristis microdon is the latin name of this amazing creature. The size of the shark’s body itself rather large, capable of reaching 6.6 meters . His mouth is covered with sharp serrations powerful enough to paralyze their prey in the blink of an eye . The saw sharks can be found in several places in Indonesia, such as the Mahakan river in Kalimantan and also the known largest population is in Sentai Lake in Papau.

Mesmerizing Indonesian Archipelago

Indonesia is a huge archipelago consisting of thousands of islands that stretch from the westernmost point of Sabang to the easternmost point of Merauke. From

Miangas island the northmost to Rote island the southmost, it spread to more than 17.508 islands with over 1 million km2 making Indonesia a massive sand box to explore. This huge archipelago is endowed with a beauty of diverse cultures and nature with distinctive flora and fauna.

There are eight major islands or island groups in this enormous chain. The largest landmasses consist of Sumatra, Java,

Kalimantan (Borneo), Sulawesi (Celebes) and Irian Jaya (the western half of Papua New Guinea). The smaller islands fall into two main groups: the Molluccas to the northeast, and the lesser Sunda chain east of Bali. Bali is a unique island, which for a number of reasons can be put into a class of its own.
