On October 31, 1517, a Catholic priest named Martin Luther posted an invitation to a debate on his church door at Wittenberg. The invitation, entitled "Ninety-Five Theses or Disputation on the Power and Efficacy of Indulgences," listed 95 statements about some issues Luther had with the Catholic Church; the way salvation and forgiveness were being taught to God's people, and the misuse of Scripture. It was an incredibly courageous action and I feel confident Luther did it with great fear of the result. He had every reason to be afraid as he was speaking truth to power – always a dangerous thing. Here is the interesting and unexpected thing; nothing happened. That must have been puzzling to Luther. He must have expected a heated argument, perhaps imprisonment, torture, or even death. He must have hoped that the Spirit would move in the heart of the Pope and bring about change. But the 95 statements simply hung on the door of the church, blowing gently in the breeze. Nothing much happened – at first. And then a holy fire began to spread across Europe, resulting in the Protestant Reformation, that still has a profound effect on you and I even to this day. But at first…nothing. I suppose that is often the case. We just don’t know the effects of the seeds of faith that we plant. When I was a young lieutenant in Germany in the early 80’s, not much was working in my life. My profession, relationships…nothing really. On top of all of that I had this incredible sense of emptiness. During the lowest point, life seemed to have little meaning or value. That was the very week that FIVE different Christians, who didn’t know each other, began to share the Good News of Jesus. The Good News touched me, but I must tell you the thing that caught my attention was that FIVE different people, in a short period, shared their faith! It was as if there was a great Orchestrator who was coordinating all five – and that got my attention! We just don’t know the effects of the seeds of faith that we plant. We hope for an immediate response – that we can lead someone to Jesus! But more often we sew and then wait for the Holy Spirit to nurture the good seed. Perhaps we will see the results immediately! Perhaps it will take some time. And perhaps we will never see the results this side of heaven. Yet we are faithful when we sew the good seed and leave the results to the Spirit. Don’t be discouraged – I believe we are a blessing to the heart of our Father in heaven when we sew faithfully. And you never know – you might just start a holy fire! Shine! Pastor Cal

invitation to a debate on his church door at Wittenberg.

But at first…nothing. I suppose that is often the case. We just don’t know the effects of the seeds of faith that we plant.

When I was a young lieutenant in Germany in the early 80’s, not much was working in my life. My profession, relationships…nothing really.

Pastor Cal

A long time ago at a church far away, picture a younger version of me getting up in front of a dozen or so teenagers getting ready to lead a Bible study. “Turn in your Bibles to Philippians,” I said (note, I don’t remember if it was Philippians or not, but let’s use it for the purposes of this story). One student would raise her hand and ask earnestly, “Is that in the Old Testament or New Testament?” I politely mentioned that it was in the New Testament and went on with my Bible study not giving it a second thought. The following week, I asked the students to turn to another book in the Bible and got the same question. Again, I didn’t think much about it. The next week, guess what? I got the question again when I asked them to turn to a particular book of the Bible, and left church that night very concerned. I believe that by the time you reach 6th or 7th grade, you should have a pretty good grasp on where each book of the Bible is located. Some people have the books of the Bible memorized in the order that they come in. I confess, I do not (those minor prophets trip me up!), but I do know enough that I don’t have to ask “Is that in the Old Testament or New Testament?” As a result of my concern after three weeks of being asked that question by the teenagers of that church, I began working with our children’s and youth leaders in implementing a Bible Drill program at that church. We didn’t focus on the competition aspect of it at first. We just tried to help those youth and children learn where the books of the Bible are located and memorize some key verses. Several years later, that program has grown and some of the children there are now participating in the drills on a state level. Bible Drill and the Youth Speakers tournament were an important part of the church I grew up in and for many years it has been a wonderful ministry here at Jonesboro Heights. Tommie Angel and Sandy Lamm will continue to lead Bible Drill this year. Bible Drill officially begins on Sunday night October 16 at 5:00 PM. The Youth and will practice at 5:00 PM and the children will practice at 6:00 PM. Information about the church, association and regional drills will come soon.

Blessings, Rich

CITY ON A HILL NEWS

DEACON’S CORNER

Submitted by Jeff Brown

Deacons met in both August and September with John Hall, chair, presiding as moderator. Devotions were provided by Eddie Bowling and John Hall. In August, newly elected deacons joined the meeting as a transition into the new church year. The expectations of the deacon family ministry and family assignments were reviewed and discussed. Topics covered over the 2 meetings included coordination of activities for the annual deacon/spouse banquet, preparation for the ministry retreat in November, and potential updates to various policies and procedures. The deacons are particularly excited for the November ministry retreat and in preparation for the weekend-long event, are reading a book title Who Moved My Pulpit? In September, Rich Wood and Richard Sistrunk demonstrated a new feature of Church Life mobile application that would enhance the deacon family ministry. Other regular business items included election of officers elected for the 2016/2017 year (John Hall, chair, Jeff Brown, vice-chair, and Kenny Dail, secretary), monthly senior pastor report, and congregation feedback.

JESUS CALLING Enjoying Peace in His Presence

By Sarah Young Devotions for Every Day of the Year

Come to Me and Listen! Attune yourself to My voice, and receive My richest blessings. Marvel at the wonder of communing with the Creator of the universe while sitting in the comfort of your home. Kings who reign on earth tend to make themselves in accessible; ordinary people almost never gain an audience with them. Even dignitaries must plow through red tape and protocol in order to speak with royalty. Though I am King of the universe, I am totally accessible to you. I am with you wherever you are. Nothing can separate you from My Presence! When I cried out from the cross, “It is finished!” the curtain of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom. This opened the way for you to meet Me face-to-Face, with no need of protocol or priests, I, the King of kings, am your constant Companion.
