What is the Joint Strategic Needs Assessment (JSNA)?
• Despite the name it’s not a military task force
• Set up from the Local Government and Public Involvement in Health Act 2007
•Assessment of health inequalities carried out by the NHS in conjunction with the local council
What is the Joint Strategic Needs
Assessment (JSNA)?
•Identifies the critical health inequalities existing in the borough
•A frame work for commissioning services
•Addresses health inequalities in a holistic way
•Looks at two areas, ‘health and wellbeing’ and ‘risk factors and wider determinants’

• Harnessing the voices and knowledge of the community is critical to the success and integrity of the assessment

•Quantitative information which can inform the fundraising strategy of community groups
•Offers the opportunity to have community voices heard

Providing mental health services for a particularly vulnerable group.

Profile raising events, aimed at reducing stigma and promoting early prevention and detection.
Camden and Islington Providers’ Forum
Services to raise awareness of mental health issues,
Services aimed at helping users realise their life ambitions.

•Homelessness is also an issue - number of households in temporary accommodation
• JSNA highlighted effective advice

Community Investment Group of the Islington Housing Group (IHAG)
Engaging communities into regeneration schemes,
Promote health and social impact assessments.
Homelessness Forum Providing services to rough sleepers, for example advice and assistance into housing / shelter.
Advice Network Provide effective advice on housing and housing related legal issues.E.g. refugees and their ‘limited leave to remain’ status.
Provide support strategies for overcrowded households.
Conclusion – using local expertise
•JSNA highlights the main health and wellbeing issues
•A framework to commission quality services
•Formed through engagement with the community and voluntary organisations
•Benefits community and voluntary organisations by showing where their services could be used, and funded
•Services and expertise offered by the ICN members and their groups is an amazing asset
