Established in 2001 by Arnold S. Broudy, Med 1971, and his wife Regina Broudy, reflecting their devotion to medical excellence and lifelong affiliation with the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine. Dr. Broudy is a past chief of the division of orthopedics, past president of the medical staff, and a former member of the board of directors of Forbes Health System. He is a past president of the medical staff for the Greater Pittsburgh Rehabilitation Hospital, and a member of both the American Society for Surgery of the Hand and the American Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Society.

Art Buchwald Scholarship This scholarship was established in 1989 in honor of the Centennial of Johns Hopkins Medicine by Mr. Buchwald, a well-known satirist. A Centennial dinner speaker, he returned his speaking fee to Hopkins to create the scholarship.

Scholarship Name Scholarship Description Barnett Berman, M.D. Scholarship Fund This scholarship was established in 1999 by an

anonymous donor to honor Dr. Berman’s service and leadership to Johns Hopkins Medicine. Dr. Berman has long been associated with the Johns Hopkins Institutions, initially as a fellow in neurophysiology research and later as part-time staff physician in the Hospital and medical school. Dr. Berman served as preceptor in clinical skills for over 40 years.

Barry S. Strauch, M.D., and Evelyn M. Strauch Scholarship Fund

Barry S. Strauch, A&S ’62, Med ’65, and his wife, Evelyn M. Strauch, established this fund in 2001 to commemorate his 35th class reunion. Their gift reflects the couple’s devotion to medical excellence and their lifelong affiliation with Johns Hopkins School of Medicine. Dr. Strauch serves on the National Council for Johns Hopkins Medicine. He also serves as a management consultant to Washington Nephrology Associates; is a clinical professor of Medicine at Georgetown Medical School; and serves on the Board of Directors of Vapotherm, Inc. and International Medical Publishing, Inc. Dr. Strauch recently joined the Johns Hopkins Medicine Board of Visitors.

Bernard and Anna Cline Student Aid Fund This scholarship was established in 1995 by the estate of Elbert F. Eibling

Bernard S. French Scholarship Fund This scholarship was established in 1974 by the estate of Sallye Lipscomb French of Washington, D.C., in memory of her husband, Bernard French, Med '23.

Bernice & Joseph Fuld Memorial Scholarship Fund Stuart L. Fuld, Med ‘63, and his wife, Ulrike L. Fuld, established this scholarship in 1998 in memory of his parents and in honor of his 35th reunion. Dr. Fuld, who recently retired, was an attending radiologist at MetroWest Medical Center in Framingham and Natick, Massachusetts.

Bissell Robbins Memorial Scholarship Fund Charlotte L. R. Stodden, Med ‘50, established this fund in 1996 in memory of her mother. Dr. Stodden did her post-doctoral internship at the University of Michigan Medical Center from 1950 - 1951. She spent her career in the pharmaceutical industry, retiring as a director of Merck & Company.

Blanche Lee Memorial Scholarship This fund was established in 1997 by family and friends in memory of Blanche Lee. Ms. Pamela L. Lee is the fund representative.

Centennial Scholarship Fund Jeff Altman, a stand-up comic who resides in California, provided the seed money for this scholarship when he donated the proceeds of a performance at Johns Hopkins back to the institution.

Charles L. & Doris Y. Hartsock Scholarship Fund This fund was established in 1961 in memory of Dr. Hartsock, Med '20, by family and friends.

Scholarship Name Scholarship Description Charles Marion Wolfe Scholarship Fund This fund was established in 1997 through the estate of

Doris L. Wolfe of Orlando, Florida, in memory of her husband.

Charles R. Austrian Fund for Medical Education This scholarship was established in 1956 by friends and colleagues in memory of Dr. Austrian, A&S ’04, Med ’09. Dr. Austrian, a native of Baltimore, became interested in pulmonary tuberculosis and other diseases of the chest early in his career. A member of the Hopkins medical faculty, he served for many years in the Phipps tuberculosis clinic. Dr. Austrian, who also was physician-in-chief of Sinai Hospital, was recognized as a superb clinician and was well known for his work in infectious diseases. His son, Robert Austrian, A&S ’37, Med ’41, served as a University trustee from 1963 to 1969. Both he and his sister, Mrs. Burton R. Fisher, continue to support the scholarship annually.

Clark Foundation Scholarship Fund This scholarship was established in 1983 by the Clark Foundation of New York City.

Class of 1915 Memorial Fund This scholarship was established by gifts and bequests from, and as a tribute to, the class.

Class of 1926 & Charles O'Donovan Scholarship Fund Members of the Class of 1926 established this scholarship in 1950 to honor Dr. O’Donovan, Med ’25, a pediatrician and member of the Hopkins faculty from 1946 to his death in 1964. His father, two sons (Charles O'Donovan III and J. Crossan O'Donovan) and a daughter (Eleanora O'Donovan Yaggy) graduated from Hopkins.

Class of 1937 Philip Bard Scholarship Members of the Class of 1937 established this scholarship in 1987 in honor of their 50th reunion and in memory of Dr. Bard. Dr. Bard served as director of Physiology and dean of the School of Medicine from 1953 to 1957. Dr. Donald F. Proctor serves as class representative.

Class of 1956 Memorial Scholarship Fund Members of the Class of 1956 established this scholarship in 1971. The scholarship continues to be supported by their annual gifts. Dr. Franklin T. Hoaglund serves as class representative.

Class of 1960 Scholarship Fund William D. Kerr, Jr., Med ‘60, of Winnetka, Illinois, and other members of the Class of 1960, established this scholarship in 1998. Dr. Kerr is a member of the Johns Hopkins University Alumni Council. Dr. George M. Callard serves as class representative.

Class of 1964 Physician of Letters Merit Scholarship Members of the Class of 1964 established this scholarship in 1991 to provide merit scholarship support. Vaughan A. Johnson, A&S '59 (M.A.), Med '64, of Danville, California, serves as class representative. He is a retired general surgeon, avid tennis player, and drummer.

Class of 1966 Scholarship Fund Members of the Class of 1966 established this scholarship in 1989 in honor of their 25th reunion. Dr. John A. Burkholder serves as class representative.

Class of 1976 Endowed Scholarship Fund This scholarship was established in 2001 by members of the class in honor of their 25th reunion. Arnold D. Gale, Med 1976 (class representative), who served as a postdoctoral fellow in the Department of Pediatrics and as a member of the Hospital staff in the Department of Neurology, and Raymond S. Martin III, Med 1976, served as co-chairs of their 25th reunion.

Class of 1978 Endowed Scholarship Fund This scholarship was established in 2003 by members of the class in honor of their 25th reunion. Walter H. Ettinger, Med 1978, who served as a postdoctoral fellow in the Departments of Rheumatology and Geriatrics and as a member of the faculty in the Department of Medicine, and Richard S. D’Agostino, Med 1978 (class representative) served as class co-chairs.

Class of 1980 Scholarship Fund John T. Thompson, A&S ’77, Med ’80, and other members of the Class of 1980, established this scholarship in 1994 in honor of their 15th class reunion. Dr. Thompson serves as class representative.

Class of 1983 Scholarship Fund Reunion class co-chairs, Randall S. Moore, Med ’83, of Long Grove, Illinois, and John G. Heller, Med ’83, of Atlanta, Georgia, established the Class of 1983 Scholarship in 1999 along with members of the class in honor of their 15th reunion. Dr. Heller serves as class representative. Mrs. Vassilia B. Agoris is parent of Peter Agoris, a deceased member of the Class of 1983.

Class of 1986 Scholarship Fund This scholarship was established in 2000 by members of the class in honor of their 15th reunion. Drs. Thomas Smyth and Mun Kyung Hong, graduates in the Class of 1986, are significant contributors to the fund.

Dalton M. Welty, M.D. and Mary B. Welty Scholarship for Medical Education

This fund was established in 2005. Mrs. Nat Clement is the daughter of Mrs. Mary B. Welty.

Daniel G. Sapir Scholarship Fund The Daniel G. Sapir Scholarship was established in 2003 to make medical students aware of Dr. Sapir’s profound achievements in the practice of internal medicine. Mrs. Anne M. Sapir is Dr. Sapir’s widow.

Daniel L. Moore, M.D., Scholarship Fund Daniel L. Moore, Med ‘58, and his wife, Sheila Moore, established this fund in 1993 in honor of his 35th class reunion. Dr. Moore is a retired associate professor of surgery at Columbia University.

Peirce Shrewbrooks Stafford. This loan fund will benefit one or more deserving and needy student of the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine.

David Graham Baird & Mildred Batchelder Baird Memorial Scholarship

The Winfield Baird Foundation (now the Baird Family scholarship) established this scholarship in 1987 in memory of the Bairds. Mr. David G. Baird, Jr., is the son of David and Mildred Baird.

David J. Carver Scholarship Fund This scholarship was established in 1957 by Dr. Carver, A&S ’19 (Ph.D.), who was a teacher, businessman, and art collector. Ms. Anne Asper Wilson is his granddaughter.

David R. Weakley, M.D., Scholarship Fund This fund was established in 1993 by the late Dr. Weakley, Med '57, in honor of his 35th reunion. A dermatologist and surgeon whose special emphasis was cosmetic surgery, Dr. Weakley was a professor at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas. He died in 1995.

Dean Alan M. Chesney & Dean Thomas B. Turner Scholarship Fund

Friends and admirers of Dr. Chesney, Med '12, dean of the School of Medicine from 1929 to 1953, and Dr. Turner, Dean of the School of Medicine from 1957 to 1968, established this scholarship in 1975 in their honor. Dr. Turner was awarded an honorary degree from Hopkins in 1991. June Bruxner-Randall, Anne Turner Pope, and Pattie Turner Hall Walker are Dr. Turner’s daughters.

Dean's Education Endowment Fund for Student Scholarships

This scholarship provides scholarship aid to students at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine.

Denise M. Dufer, M.D. Memorial Scholarship Fund Family, friends, and colleagues established this scholarship in 1990 in memory of Dr. Dufer, Med '88. Dr. Dufer’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. William B. Dufer, reside in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Philip C. Watt, Med ’88, BSPH ’94 (M.P.H.), is the representative for the Class of 1988.

Dorothy D. Hoelzer Scholarship Fund Established in 2002 by the estate of Dorothy D. Hoelzer (d ‘02). Mrs. Hoelzer is survived by her daughter, Jacalyn Hoelzer Pierce of Hawaii.

Dorothy Reed Mendenhall Scholarship Fund John T. Mendenhall, Med ‘42, and his wife, Sally Mendenhall, Med ‘43, established this fund in 1957 for female medical students. The fund honors his mother, Dorothy Reed Mendenhall, Med 1900, whose research in pathology established Hodgkin’s disease as a distinct disorder characterized by a specific blood cell (the Reed cell). She later collected data about maternal and child health, became a great supporter of midwifery, and was named a medical officer for the U.S. Children’s Bureau. Mrs. William (Dorothy) Blobner is their daughter.

Scholarship Name Scholarship Description Douglas G. Carroll, Jr. Student Aid Fund This scholarship was established in 1976 by the estate of

Douglas G. Carroll, Med ‘42, who served as associate professor at the School of Medicine and assistant chief of medicine at City Hospitals. Support has also come from his widow, Marguerite Carroll, Med ’49, (M.A.), who died in 1998, and his daughter, Susan Immelt, Nurs ‘77, '00 (Ph.D.).

Dr. & Mrs. Abraham Genecin Memorial Fund This fund was established in 1999 by Rita Genecin of Baltimore in memory of her husband. Dr. Genecin, Med ’44, was a cardiologist in private practice. He also served as an associate professor of cardiovascular medicine at Johns Hopkins. Mr. and Mrs. Genecin are survived by their two sons, Paul and Victor.

Dr. & Mrs. Fred B. Aurin Scholarship Fund Fred B. Aurin, Med ‘42, and his wife, Gene Aurin, established this scholarship in 1997. Dr. Aurin is a retired general surgeon originally from Oklahoma. He has spent most of his career practicing in Fort Worth, Texas. Preference is given to students coming from the University of Texas or the University of Oklahoma.

Dr. Alfred Blalock Scholarship Fund This scholarship was established in 1966 by Thomas Harrold, Med '24, and his wife in memory of Dr. Blalock, Med '22, the Hopkins surgeon who is credited, along with pediatric cardiologist Helen Taussig and technician Vivian Thomas, with developing the blue-baby operation to correct congenital heart abnormalities. Dr. Harrold died in 1973.

Dr. Arthur Nathan Wang Memorial Scholarship Fund This fund was established in 1988 by the mother and sisters of Dr. Arthur Nathan Wang, Med '82, whose promising career as a neurosurgeon was ended by a fatal accident. Ms. Josephine Wang is his sister. Preference in award of the scholarship is given to students pursuing a career in clinical neurosurgery.

Dr. Bernard E. Simon & Bitten H. Simon, R.N., Scholarship Fund

This fund was established by the estate of Dr. Simon, Med ’37, a renowned plastic surgeon whose work with the “Hiroshima Maidens” after World War II won him international acclaim. He served as Class of 1937 representative for many years. Cathy J. Simon and John Simon, Ph.D., are Dr. Simon’s daughter and son.

Dr. Donald G. & Barbara Mulder Scholarship Fund Donald G. Mulder, Med ‘52, and his wife, Barbara Mulder, established this fund in 1994 in recognition of Dr. Mulder’s medical school experience at Johns Hopkins. Dr. Mulder is professor of thoracic surgery at UCLA Medical Center, and serves as the Class of 1952 representative.

Scholarship Name Scholarship Description Dr. E. Paul O'Sullivan, M.D., Scholarship Fund E. Paul O’Sullivan, Med ‘43, established this fund in 1993

in honor of his 50th class reunion. Dr. O’Sullivan was a surgeon and director of medical education at Orange Memorial Hospital in New Jersey, and also operated a clinic in Newark to help those in need. He died in 1993, just three weeks before this 50th class reunion celebration. His widow, Mrs. E. Paul O’Sullivan, supports the fund with annual gifts.

Dr. Edward M. and Marcella Finesilver Memorial Scholarship Fund

Frances F. Blumenthal of West Hartford, Connecticut, established this scholarship in 1998 in memory of her father, Edward M. Finesilver, Med ‘24.

Dr. Edwin Leonard McQuade Scholarship This fund was established in 1954. The late Dr. McQuade, SPH '31 (Dr.P.H.), was an epidemiologist.

Dr. George & Catherine Hayes Scholarship Fund Neurosurgeon George J. Hayes, Med ‘43, and his wife, Catherine Hayes, established this fund in 1993 in recognition of his 50th reunion. Mrs. Hayes resides in Gaithersburg, Maryland, and continue to support the fund with their annual gifts. Kate Losman is the daughter of Dr. and Mrs. Hayes.

Dr. George D. Zuidema Scholarship The Johns Hopkins Medical & Surgical Association established this scholarship to honor Dr. George D. Zuidema. Dr. George D. Zuidema graduated from The Johns Hopkins University in 1953. He began his academic career as an Assistant Professor in 1960 at the University of Michigan after completing his general surgical training at Massachusetts General Hospital from 1953 to 1954. At Massachusetts General, he was named Chief Resident in 1959 upon his return to the institution after he served in the U.S. Air Force Medical Corps from 1954 to 1956. After general surgical training at Massachusetts General Hospital. In 1964 he was promoted to associate professor in 1964. At the age of 36, Dr. Zuidema was appointed Warfield M. Firor Professor and director, Section of Surgical Sciences at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. In 1968, he served as the president of the Association of Academic Surgery, which he helped to found. In 1984, Dr. Zuidema was named to the newly created post of Vice Provost for Medical Affairs and Professor of Surgery at the University of Michigan, a position he held until 1994. During his tenure as Vice Provost for Medical Affairs at the University of Michigan, Dr. Zuidema oversaw the development of the Cancer and Geriatrics Centers and the growth of research facilities in addition to the creation of M-Care and HMO.

Scholarship Name Scholarship Description Dr. H. Franklin Herlong Scholarship The Johns Hopkins Medical & Surgical Association

established this scholarship to honor Dr. Dr. H. Franklin Herlong. Dr. Herlong received his Bachelor of Arts from Duke University in 1970. He then went on to attend the Medical University of South Carolina from 1970-1974. In 1974 to 1975 he did his internship at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in the Department of Medicine. He then did his residency in the Department of Medicine at Hopkins from 1975-1977. In 1977-1979, Dr. Herlong completed his fellowship in the Division of Gastroenterology at Hopkins. In 1979, Dr. Herlong became a physician of Gastroenterology, a position which he still holds today. From 1980 to 1985, he was an Assistant Professor of Medicine at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. In 1985 he was promoted to Associate Professor of Medicine, a role that he also still serves today. Additionally, Dr. Herlong serves as the Director of the Osler Advancement Clerkship. In 1988, Dr. Herlong served as the Assistant Dean of Student Affairs and held that position for fifteen years. Over his career, Dr. Herlong has been recognized time and again for his outstanding work in academia and in other aspects of his career. In 1985, through 1988, Dr. Herlong was an annual recipient of the George J. Stuart Teaching Award. In 2005, Herlong was awarded the Heritage Award from the SoM alumni Association. This award is given to alumni and friends of Johns Hopkins University who have contributed outstanding service. Currently, Dr. Herlong serves on the council of the Johns Hopkins Medical and Surgical Association as First Vice-President (President-Elect). He has been and continues to be an avid volunteer for Johns Hopkins in many capacities, as well as a generous philanthropist.

Dr. Helen B. Taussig Scholarship Fund This fund was established in 1986 by Dr. Taussig, Med '27, who died that year. The pediatric cardiologist at Hopkins who helped develop the surgery for "blue babies," she later fought to block the use of thalidomide in the U.S. and received the Medal of Freedom.

Dr. J. Alex & M. Arlene Gardner Scholarship Fund J. Alex Gardner, Med ‘62, and his wife, M. Arlene Gardner, established this scholarship in 1996. Following a tour with the medical corps in Vietnam, Dr. Gardner served as a radiology resident in Cleveland. Dr. Gardner retired after a long career in radiology in Kalamazoo, Michigan. Preference for this scholarship is given to students from southwestern Michigan.

Dr. J. Alex Haller, Jr. Scholarship The Johns Hopkins Medical & Surgical Association established this scholarship to honor Dr. J. Alex Haller. J. Alex Haller, Jr., was born in Pulaski, Virginia in 1927. He earned his B.A. in 1947 from Vanderbilt University in 1947 and his M.D. from the Johns Hopkins University

Scholarship Name Scholarship Description School of Medicine specializing in Cardiac Surgery in 1951. Dr. Haller did his residency in the Halsted surgical service at Johns Hopkins. Haller moved to Kentucky after his surgical residency at Hopkins, and was on the faculty of the University of Louisville, where he was named outstanding clinical professor in 1961. Haller was also a pediatric surgeon at Louisville Children's Hospital. He came back to Johns Hopkins in 1963 to join the school of medicine faculty in pediatrics, pediatric surgery, and emergency medicine. From 1964 until 1997, Dr. Haller was the Children's-Surgeon-in-Charge of Johns Hopkins Hospital. Throughout, he pursued an interest in surgical problems of children, with a focus on congenital deformities of the chest wall, as well as on pediatric cardio-thoracic surgery and care for children with serious injuries. He wrote several books, including The Hospitalized Child and His Family (1967). He established the regional trauma center for children at Johns Hopkins, the first such program of its kind in the United States, and established a training program for pediatric surgeons. Dr. Haller is also a member of the legislative committee of CeaseFire, an organization whose mission is to reduce gun violence in Maryland, and has been influential and instrumental in shaping CeaseFire Maryland’s legislative agenda over the years. He is also a spokesman for sensible gun control. He is a member of the American Academy of Pediatrics and the American Trauma Society.

Dr. John T. King, Jr. Scholarship Fund John T. King, Jr., Med ‘14, a distinguished Hopkins physician for more than six decades, established this fund in 1978. He died in 1979. Joseph D. B. King, Med ‘44, and his wife, Margaret King, are Dr. King’s son and daughter-in-law.

Dr. Patrick & Judith Brookhouser Scholarship Fund Patrick E. Brookhouser, Med ‘66, and his wife, Judith Brookhouser, established this scholarship in 1999. Dr. and Mrs. Brookhouser reside in Omaha, Nebraska. He is a former chief resident in otolaryngology and is currently the President of Boys Town National Research Hospital.

Dr. Raymond Wing Memorial Scholarship Fund Mrs. Raymond Wing established this fund in 1981 in memory of her husband, Dr. Raymond Wing, Med ‘27, who served the Easton, Pennsylvania community as an internist for 42 years. Dr. Wing was a vigorous advocate of public health and preventive medicine. Ms. Susan Makla is Dr. Wing’s granddaughter. This fund will provide scholarship assistance to first-year medical students.

Dr. Victor A. McKusick Scholarship Fund This fund was established in 1974 by an anonymous donor in honor of Dr. McKusick, Med '46, who has served the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine continuously since his graduation. He is also the Class of 1946 representative.

established this scholarship to honor Dr. Vivien Thomas. Vivien Thomas has been described as the “most untalked about, unappreciated, unknown giant in the African American community.” Thomas was born in New Iberia, Louisiana on August 29, 1910. His family later moved to Nashville, Tennessee and in 1929, after working as an orderly in a private infirmary to earn money for college, he enrolled as a premedical student at Tennessee Agricultural and Industrial College. The Depression caused a bank crash that wiped out his life's savings, and forced him to drop out of school. In 1930, he took a position at Vanderbilt University as a laboratory assistant with Alfred Blalock. Thomas' abilities as a surgical assistant and research associate were of the highest quality, and when Blalock moved to Johns Hopkins in 1941 he asked Thomas to accompany him. Thomas joined Blalock's surgical team and helped to develop the procedure used in the "blue baby" operation. He assisted in the trainings of many of the surgeons at Johns Hopkins in the delicate techniques necessary for heart and lung operations. Thomas was a member of the medical school faculty from 1976 until 1985 and was presented with the degree of Honorary Doctor of Laws by the Johns Hopkins University in 1976. Thomas supervised the surgical laboratories at Hopkins for over 35 years, and in 1976 he was appointed instructor in surgery at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. In 1979, upon his retirement, he became instructor emeritus of surgery. Vivien Thomas's achievements were widely recognized by his colleagues. In 1976, he was awarded the honorary degree Doctor of Laws, by the Johns Hopkins University. He also authored: Pioneering Research in Surgical Shock and Cardiovascular Surgery: Vivien Thomas and His Work with Alfred Blalock (Philadelphia: University of Pennsylvania Press, 1985).

established this scholarship to honor Dr. William H. Zinkham. Dr. William Zinkham was born in Uniontown, Maryland in 1924. Dr. Zinkham received his undergraduate degree from the Johns Hopkins University and continued at Hopkins to receive his Medical Degree from Hopkins in 1947. After graduating from the School of Medicine, Dr. Zinkham did his residency training in Pediatrics at the Harriet Lane Home of the Johns Hopkins Hospital, and then did a fellowship in Pediatric Hematology from 1950 to 1953 under the supervision of Dr. L. K. Diamond at the Children’s Medical Center, Harvard Medical School. After spending two years fulfilling military commitments with the SAC command and the Air Force, Dr. Zinkham came back to Hopkins and became a professor of Pediatrics in 1972 and a professor of Oncology in 1975. In 1989, Dr. Zinkham received the endowed Rainey Professorship of Pediatric Hematology. Dr. Zinkham has been the recipient of many awards during his career at Hopkins. In 1970, he was awarded the First Alexander J. Shaffer Award for Excellence in Clinical Teaching, and again in 1984. In 1985 the School of Medicine awarded him with the Professor’s Award for Excellence in Teaching. Dr. Zinkham and his wife recognize the importance of philanthropy and the great impact it can have. They have been very generous donors, namely to the Frank A. Oski, M.D. Scholars Program at the Children’s Center at Johns Hopkins University.

Drs. A. Peter and Yvonne Weiss Scholarship Fund in Medical Education

Drs. A. Peter Weiss, Med '85, and his wife, Dr. Yvonne Weiss, a former intern in pediatrics at Hopkins established this fund in 2004 to provide financial assistance to medical students at the School of Medicine.

E. Cowles Andrus Scholarship Fund Miriam “Jay” Andrus, A&S ’34 (M.A.), established this scholarship in 1981 in memory of her husband, E. Emanuel and Patricia M. Papper Scholarship Fund Established through a planned gift in 2003 by Dr. Emanuel Papper, who was Dean Emeritus and Professor of Anesthesiology at the University of Miami, School of Medicine. Dr. Papper earned his medical degree from New York University, served in the Army Medical Corps and eventually became chief of anesthesiology at Walter Reed Hospital. He went on to become the head of anesthesiology at Columbia University and Presbyterian Hospital in New York. He was the Co-founder and first President of the Association of University Anesthetists, First President of the Anesthesiology Section of the New York Academy of Medicine, and served as President of the American Society of Anesthesiologists, the New York Society of Anesthesiologists , and the World Federation of Anesthesiologists. He also served as Director of the Anesta Corporation. Dr. Papper served on the Board of Vistors at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine until his death in 2002. Dr. Papper is survived by his wife, Patricia.

Emily Goetsch Fund for Medical Students This fund was established in 1980 by the estate of physician Arthur Goetsch of Rutherford, New Jersey, in memory of both his brother, Emil Goetsch, Med '09, and his niece, Margaret L. Goetsch, Med '40.

Epps Family Fund This scholarship was established in 1999 by physicians Charles H. Epps, Jr. and his wife, Roselyn Payne Epps, SPH '73 (M.P.H.), in honor of their son, Howard R. Epps, Med '89, and in memory of their son Charles H. Epps II, Med '83. Charles H. Epps, Jr., a longtime member of the School of Medicine faculty, is associate professor emeritus of orthopaedic surgery. The scholarship assists medical students who have unanticipated expenses requiring emergency support.

Eric W. Fonkalsrud, M.D., and Margaret Z. Fonkalsrud Endowed Scholarship Fund

This scholarship was established in 2002 by Eric W. Fonkalsrud, Med 1957, and his wife, Margaret Fonkalsrud. The couple have a life-long affiliation with the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine. Dr. Fonkalsrud served on the faculty at the School of Medicine’s Department of Surgery and as a surgeon at the Hospital. He was inducted into the Society of Scholars in May, 2003.

At Hopkins, Dr. DeSanctis worked with Dr. Blalock and Dr. Ravitch. After studying medicine at Hopkins, Dr. DeSanctis completed his surgical residency at Case Western Reserve. Dr. DeSanctis, who resides in Ohio, retired from emergency medicine and surgery in 1997. Eugenio Fernandez-Cerra, M.D., Scholarship Fund Eugenio Fernandez-Cerra, Med ’43, of Puerto Rico, established this scholarship in 1999. Dr. Fernandez-Cerra is a retired pulmonary specialist. Preference of award for this scholarship is given to medical students from Puerto Rico.

Evelyn H. Hurlburt & Irene H. Sluckis Scholarship Fund This fund was established in 1997 in memory of Dr. Hurlburt by her friends Charles O. Banks and Irene H. Sluckis of Naples, Florida. Dr. Hurlburt was a diagnostic radiologist and had served on the faculty at Hopkins' School of Public Health. She had come to Hopkins from the University of Maryland, where she earned her doctorate, to work with Henry N. Wagner, Jr., A&S '48, Med '52, on his research.

Evers P. & Adeline E. Zepp Scholarship This fund was established by a bequest from Mrs. Zepp. Ezra S. Shaya Endowed Scholarship Fund Dr. Shaya, Med ‘54, who was born and raised in

Baghdad, Iraq, established this fund in 1989. He is a surgeon and family practitioner, and has served on the National Council for Johns Hopkins Medicine. Dr. Shaya is a firm believer in giving back to the world some of what it has given him, and he takes an active interest in the scholarship recipients, often writing them upon receipt of their stewardship letters.

Duchan Fischer and his wife, Janet Jordan Fischer, Med 1948. This scholarship was created to recognize the Hopkins medical legacy of the Fischer family: Newton, Janet, and Anne, along with other members of the Fischer family. Drs. Newton and Janet Fischer, of Chapel Hill, North Carolina, both served on the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine faculty and at Johns Hopkins Hospital. Newton Fischer founded the Department of Otolaryngology at the University of North Carolina and served as chair. Janet Jordan Fischer was a professor of infectious diseases at the University of North Carolina. Anne Crowe Fischer, M.D., Ph.D., Med 1991, daughter of Newton and Janet Fischer, is a faculty member in the Department of Surgery at Johns Hopkins Hospital.

Florence Rena Sabin Scholarship Fund This fund was established in 1959 for female medical students by the Johns Hopkins Women's Medical Alumnae Association in memory of Dr. Sabin, Med 1900, who was the first woman professor at Hopkins, the first woman president of the American Association of Anatomists, and the first woman elected to the National Academy of Sciences, in 1925. She was an authority on blood cells and the body's defenses against infection. Preference for award is given to deserving women medical students of academic distinction and promise, preferably entering the first year of medical school.

Frances Turner White Fund This fund was established in 1980 by the estate of Mrs. White, a teacher from Baltimore.

Frances Ward Banks Memorial Scholarship Fund Elizabeth B. Banks established this scholarship in 1992 in memory of her mother, Frances Lucinda Ward Banks. Miss Elizabeth Banks died in 2005. Mrs. Beatrice Newell is Miss Banks' sister.

Frank Norman Hillis, Jr., Memorial Scholarship in Medical Education

The Frank Norman Hillis, Jr., Memorial Scholarship in Medical Education was established in 2000 by Panamerican Consulting International Ltd. This gift is in memory of Frank N. Hillis, Jr. (d ‘99), who was founder of Panamerican Consulting Ltd. His son, F. Norman Hillis III, WSE ’56, and grandson, Stephen Hillis, were instrumental in advancing this gift. Hughes of Baltimore, son of George and Fredericka (deceased), and Gail Hughes Deets of Lawrenceville, Georgia, daughter of Augustus, established this memorial scholarship fund. Preference is given to students specializing in geriatrics.

Georgeanna Seegar Jones Scholarship The Johns Hopkins Medical & Surgical Association established this scholarship to honor Dr. Georgeanna Seegar Jones. Dr. Jones received her M.D. from The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in 1936. After serving as a house officer in Gynecology at The Johns Hopkins Hospital, in 1939 she was appointed Director of the school’s Laboratory of Reproductive Physiology and as Gynecologist-in-Charge of the hospital’s Gynecological Endocrine Clinic. Dr. Jones became, in fact, the first full-time gynecological endocrinologist at a medical school. Her husband, Dr. Howard W. Jones (Med ’35), one of the foremost pelvic surgeons of his generation, established an international reputation in reparative and reconstructive surgery of the female genital tract. With his skill in surgery, and her expertise in endocrinology, they became a highly respected, well-rounded team that worked closely with residents and fellows to provide an expanding knowledge of endocrinology before a formalized sub-specialty training program in this area was established. In 1978, both Georgeanna and Howard retired from Johns Hopkins and were appointed professors of obstetrics and gynecology at Eastern Virginia Medical School.

Gertrude Wills Parker & Edwin Milton Parker Endowed Scholarship Fund

Dr. Browne was a member of the Baltimore Chirurgical Society, the Monumental City Medical Society, and the American Medical Society. He died in 1973 and Mrs. Browne, in 1978. Herbert Remmer Memorial Scholarship Fund This fund was established in 1986 by Hilda Remmer of Ambridge, Pennsylvania, in memory of her brother.

Herbert Sloan, M.D., and Doris Edwards Sloan Scholarship for Medical Education

This fund was established in 2003 by Herbert E. Sloan, Jr., Med 1940. Dr. Sloan is Professor Emeritus of Surgery at the University of Michigan Medical School. He completed a war-shortened residency in surgery at The Johns Hopkins Hospital. After spending three years in the Armed Services, he completed a residency in thoracic surgery at the University of Michigan. Dr. Sloan remained at Michigan and became head of the Section of Thoracic Surgery. He was elected president of the American Association for Thoracic Surgery and of the Society of Thoracic Surgeons. Dr. Sloan served as editor of the Annals of Thoracic Surgery and as secretary of the American Board of Thoracic Surgery. His wife, Doris Edwards Sloan, Nursing 1940, was the top graduate of her School of Nursing Class and was a lifelong supporter of Johns Hopkins. Mrs. Sloan raised a family of five children and then turned to her love of art. She helped establish the first docent program at the University of Michigan Museum of Art. By the time of her death in 1989, Mrs. Sloan had acquired an important art collection.

Isabella Harrison, M.D., Scholarship for Medical Education

Isabella Harrison, Med ‘38, of Virginia Beach, Virginia, established this fund in 1999 to provide scholarship support for female medical students interested in a surgical career. Now retired, Dr. Harrison had been chief surgeon at the Veteran’s Administration Medical Center in Martinsburg, West Virginia. She is professor emerita of surgery at George Washington University.

J. Morris Slemons Scholarship Fund This fund was established by a bequest from Anne G. Slemons of Pasadena, California, in honor of Morris Slemons, Med 1901, a member of the obstetrics faculty for 10 years.

James F. Nabwangu ,M.D., Scholarship Fund Dr. Nabwangu, A&S ’64, Med ‘67, established this fund in 1995 to celebrate his 25th class reunion. Dr. Nabwangu is a neurosurgeon from Minot, North Dakota, and was the first African-American to attend the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine.

James Johnston Waring Memorial Scholarship Fund This fund was established in 1962 by Ruth Porter Waring of Denver, Colorado, in memory of her husband.

Jean Epstein Memorial Scholarhip Fund The Alvin and Louella Epstein Foundation established this scholarship in 1985 in memory of Mr. Epstein’s sister. The scholarship supports female students interested in neurology. Richard P. Sills is the president of The Alvin and Louella Epstein Foundation.

Jeanette B. & Loring W. Pratt Scholarship Fund Loring W. Pratt, Med ‘43, and his wife, Jeanette B. Pratt, established this fund in 1993 on the occasion of his 50th class reunion. Dr. Pratt spent his career as a surgeon, specializing in otolaryngology. Mrs. Pratt was recognized as Maine's Mother of the Year in 1994.

Jeffrey L. Marsh, M.D. Endowed Scholarship Fund This fund was established in 2005 by Jeffrey L. Marsh, M.D. to provide need based aid for students at the School of Medicine.

Jennie Lee Batson, M.D. Memorial Scholarship This scholarship was established in 1998 by family, friends, colleagues, and classmates in memory of Jennie Lee Batson, Med ‘84. The Class of 1984 dedicated its 15th reunion to her memory. Her husband, Dr. Oliver Andrew Batson, of Bothell, Washington, is a member of the class. Dr. Robert J. Jerry and Ruth Chang Scholarship Fund Established in 2003 by Helena Chang Chui, Med ‘77, in honor of her parents, Jerry and Ruth Chang. This endowed scholarship fund, presented on the occasion of the 25th graduation anniversary of the Class of 1977, honors Dr. Chui’s parents — their accomplishments and their international work in pursuit of peace, in the hope that future generations of physicians will share a global vision that advances peace and health to the many countries of the world. Dr. Chui is a Professor of Neurology at the University of Southern California Keck School of Medicine and has a practice at the Rancho Los Amigos National Rehabilitation Center. Preference for this scholarship is given to students who have received, or expect to receive, a Master’s in Public Health while at Johns Hopkins University.

Jesse Myers Scholarship Fund This fund was established in 1971 in memory of Jesse Myers, a first year medical student who died in an automobile accident. Claudia L. Thomas, Med ’75, and Jettie M. Burnett, Med ’75, helped to raise support for this fund, along with Isaac Moore, Med ‘74. Preference in award of the scholarship is given to minority students.

Jesse W. & Emma Dieringer Hubbard Memorial Scholarship Fund

Jesse Donald Hubbard, Med '51, and John Stanley Hubbard, Med '53, established this fund in 1992 in memory of their parents. Dr. Hubbard served in the Air Force in World War II as a meteorologist and is retired from the Department of Pathology at Indiana University School of Medicine. John Hubbard served in the Army in World War II and was held as a German prisoner-of-war. He is a retired surgeon living in Winchester, Kentucky.

Joan and David Goldfarb, M.D. Endowed Scholarship Fund

Dr. Goldfarb, A&S ’59, Med '63, and his wife, Joan Goldfarb, of Scottsdale, Arizona, established this fund in 1995. Dr. and Mrs. Goldfarb support the fund with their annual gifts. Dr. Goldfarb is a retired thoracic surgeon.

established this scholarship to honor Dr. John H. Yardley. Dr. Yardley received his M.D. from The Johns Hopkins School of Medicine in 1953. He did an internship in medicine at Vanderbilt University and returned to Hopkins for his residency training in anatomic pathology, which included the Chief Resident position in his final year. In 1955 Dr. Yardley was appointed to the faculty of The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine as Instructor, was promoted to Assistant Professor in 1959, to Associate Professor in 1964, and to Professor in 1972. In addition, he has held the position as Pathologist on the medical staff at the Johns Hopkins Hospital since 1958. He served as Assistant Dean for Admissions from 1969-1970 and in 1977 was appointed to Associate Dean for Academic Affairs, a position he held until 1984. Between 1988 and 1992, he served as Baxley Professor and Director of the Department of Pathology. Dr. Yardley is recognized as a world-renowned expert in Gastrointestinal Pathology as a diagnostician and a researcher. Of all his accomplishments, Dr. Yardley feels greatest pride in his contributions to subspecialty training of fellows and house officers in diagnosis and research in gastrointestinal pathology. Over the years, he has instilled in his fellows a lifetime love of research, patient care, and teaching. In addition to his service and academic activities, he currently serves as Director of Fellowship Training Programs in the Department of Pathology.

Johns Memorial Scholarship Fund This fund was established in 1985 by Richard J. Johns, Med '48, and his wife, Carol J. Johns, Med '50, of Baltimore, and Dorothy J. and Richard J. Barksdale of Riverside, California, in memory of their parents, James S. and Pearl M. Johns. Carol Johns served as the alumni representative for the Class of 1950. Dr. Richard Johns remains on the faculty in the Department of Medicine.

Joseph A. Manfredi Scholarship for Medical Education The purpose of this scholarship is to provide financial assistance to medical students.

Joseph C. Eggleston Memorial Scholarship Fund Family, friends, and colleagues of Joseph C. Eggleston, Med ‘62, established the Joseph C. Eggleston Memorial Scholarship in 1989 in his memory. Dr. Eggleston was a pathologist at Hopkins from 1962 – 1989, serving as professor and director of surgical pathology. Dr. Eggleston was an international authority on tumors of the lung. His widow, Sylvia Eggleston-Wehr, and her daughters support the scholarship.

Joseph J. and Mary Richeson Takacs Trust This fund was established in 1997 following the death of Judge Joseph Takacs of Jamesburgh, New Jersey, in memory of his wife, Mary R. Takacs, Nurs '22. The trust, managed by colleagues of Judge Takacs in Ohio, allocates funds each year for scholarships for outstanding nursing or medicine students from Ohio or New Jersey.

Joseph N. & Elisa Bongiovanni Medical Student Aid Fund This scholarship was established in 1987 by the estate of Alfred M. Bongiovanni in honor of his parents. Alfred Bongiovanni, a Philadelphia resident, served on Hopkins' pediatrics faculty from 1952-1955 and later as professor of pediatrics at the University of Pennsylvania Medical Center.

Leon Schlossberg Scholarship Fund Established in 2004 by friends and colleagues of Leon Schlossberg (d ‘99). Mr. Schlossberg was an associate Professor in the Department of Art as Applied to Medicine at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and known internationally as a medical illustrator. His most famous work, The Johns Hopkins Atlas of Human Functional Anatomy, is an all-time best seller for the Johns Hopkins University Press and has been translated into over 10 languages. Mr. Schlossberg was a charter member of the Association of Medical Illustrators and the recipient of the Lifetime Achievement Award in 1991, its highest honor. In 1998, Mr. Schlossberg was made an honorary doctor of humane letters at Johns Hopkins. Mr. Schlossberg is survived by his wife, Jean, and their two children, Dr. Richard Schlossberg and Mrs. Linda Rothleder. This fund will provide an essential source of tuition support to a student in the Graduate Program in Medicine and Biological Illustration at Hopkins.

Leonard L. Greif Memorial Scholarship Fund Amy Greif and her sons, Leonard L. Greif, Jr., and Roger L. Greif, Med ‘41, established this fund in 1957 in memory of her husband. Baltimore photographer Leonard L. Greif, Jr., and his wife, Ann Greif, are prominent advocates of Johns Hopkins Medicine. Roger L. Greif is a physician at Cornell Medical College.

Leslie E. Myatt, M.D., & Marion D. Myatt Memorial Scholarship

This fund was established in 2000 by the estate of Marion D. Myatt in memory of her husband, Leslie E. Myatt, Med ’21. Mr. Harland M. Davis is Mrs. Myatt's closest living relative and was instrumental in making this gift possible. Mrs. Myatt requested that recipients of this fund make a commitment to repay the University the principal sum, without interest, within a reasonable time after graduation and entering into practice.

Louis M. Rosenfeld Scholarship Fund This fund was established in 1990 for Maryland residents by the estate of Madalyn Schwentker Rosenfeld, Nurs ’30, in memory of her husband, Louis M. Rosenfeld. Mrs. Rosenfeld’s first husband was Francis Schwentker, Med ’29, former director of the Children’s Center, who died in 1954. Dr. Edwards P. Schwentker and Mrs. G. Jackson Philips are Madalyn Schwentker's (Rosenfeld) children.

Luna Taylor Bradshaw & James S. Taylor, M.D., Fund This scholarship was established in 1997 by the Luna Taylor Bradshaw Trust through the estate of Miss Taylor's brother, James S. Taylor, Med '28, in recognition of the tuition assistance Dr. Taylor received in medical school. Dr. Taylor, of Danbury, North Carolina, served on the pathology faculty at Hopkins' School of Medicine. Miss Taylor was a Winston-Salem resident.

and family of Dr. Mayer, who died in 1984. Dr. Mayer was a professor in Hopkins’ Department of Immunology and was honored for his research on and discoveries about the body’s immune system. His son, Dr. David M. Mayer, is a graduate of the School of Medicine Class of 1975. Preference in award of the scholarship is given to displaced persons or refugees. Dr. Mayer is survived by his wife, Elinor Mayer, and his son, David M. Mayer. Drs. Kimishige and Teruko Ishizaka were colleagues of Dr. Mayer in the Department of Immunology and are contributors to the fund.

Marcia Anderson Memorial Scholarship Fund R. David Anderson, Med ‘90 established this scholarship in memory of his wife, Dr. Marcia Anderson. The scholarship is perpetuated by gifts from her sister and brother-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Gary Beinhaker.

Marguerite T. Doane Scholarship Fund This scholarship was established in 1952 by Mrs. Doane. Maurice H. Givens - David E. Rogers Scholarship This fund was established by the estate of Dr. Givens of

Jacksonville, Florida, in honor of Dr. Rogers, who completed post-doctoral work at Hopkins. Dr. Rogers, who died in 1994, was on the faculty of Cornell University Medical College.

Medical School Class of 1936 Memorial Scholarship Fund

Members of the Class of 1936 established this scholarship in 1968 in memory of deceased classmates. Dr. Palmer H. Futcher (d '04) served as class representative and Dr. Edward A. Birge has made a significant commitment to sustain this scholarship.

Michael F. Saviano Scholarship Fund Established in 2004 by the estate of Michael F. Saviano. After serving as a Captain in the United States Air Force Medical Corps, Dr. Saviano completed his Otolaryngology training at Hopkins and then started his own practice in San Francisco in 1967.

Mildvan Alumni Endowed Scholarship Fund Established in 2003 by Ds. Patricia Tarr Mildvan, Med ‘59, Albert S. Mildvan, Med ‘57, and Donna Mildvan, Med ‘67, in honor of their devotion to medicine and their lifetime affiliation with the School of Medicine. Dr. Albert Mildvan has been a professor of Biological Chemistry at the School of Medicine since 1981. His wife, Dr. Patricia Mildvan, has served as an Instructor at the Children’s Center and later joined a practice in Dundalk, MD. Dr. Albert Mildvan’s sister, Dr. Donna Mildvan, was the Chief of the Division of Infectious Diseases at the Beth Israel Medical Center in New York. This fund will provide financial assistance to medical students or M.D./Ph.D. students in good standing.

Morris J. Moskowitz, M.D., Scholarship This fund was established in 2000 by Ms. Bertha W. Slutsky and the estate of Dr. Moskowitz.

Morris Joseph Medical Residence Scholarship This fund was established by Dr. Joseph, Med '15, to defray the cost of a student's room in Reed Hall.

Morris Schapiro Scholarship Fund The Morris Schapiro and Family Foundation established this fund in 1954 in honor of Mr. Schapiro's 70th birthday. Mr. Schapiro came to the United States in 1902 from Latvia to avoid religious persecution by the Russian Czar. He began hauling metal and lumber from the ruins of the Baltimore fire of 1904. With two relatives, he started the Boston Metals Company, which was a $10 million-a-year business when he died. He was also the director of the Laurel Race Course. Mrs. Eleanor Tydings Schapiro is his daughter-in-law.

Morrison Leroy Haviland Scholarship Fund James W. Haviland, Med ‘36, and Morrison C. Haviland established this fund in 1978 in honor of their father, Morrison Haviland, Med 1902, who died in 1966. James Haviland is a retired clinical professor of medicine and assistant dean at the University of Washington School of Medicine in Seattle.

Morton F. Goldberg, M.D., Scholarship Fund Established in 2003 by Frank E. O'Donnell, Jr., Med ’75, in honor of Morton F. Goldberg, M.D. After a highly successful fourteen year tenure of providing brilliant leadership as Director of the Wilmer Eye Institute and William Holland Wilmer Professor of Ophthalmology, Dr. Goldberg stepped down as the Institute’s fifth director in 2003. Dr. Goldberg continues to be a vital force in Wilmer’s clinical, teaching, and research activities.

Oscar and Victoria Dorsch Scholarship for Medical Education

This scholarship was established in 2003 by Carole A. Dorsch, M.D., in memory of her parents, to provide financial support for medical students at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine.

Oscar B. Schier Fund for Medical Student Aid This fund was established in 1981 by the estate of Ida F. Schier in memory of her brother, Oscar B. Schier, who came to Baltimore with their brother Carl in the late 1800s. The two then established the Schier Hygea Dairy. Oscar Schier, a national authority on milk handling and the first in Baltimore to pasteurize and bottle milk, worked with the city’s health commissioner to develop standards requiring all dairies to pasteurize milk. Ida Schier, a nurse, emigrated from Germany to New York, later settling in Baltimore, where she worked at the Medical Arts Center and Maryland General Hospital. Mrs. Jean C. Schier is the widow of Oscar Schier’s nephew.

Martin Wasserman is the former director and health officer at Prince George's County Health Department, former State of Maryland's secretary of health and mental hygiene, and the former secretary of Montgomery County Department of Health and Human Services. Dr. Randall M. Packard currently serves as a School of Medicine faculty member and chairman of the History of Medicine Department.

Parents Fund for Medical Student Aid This fund was established in 1990 by parents whose sons or daughters needed financial assistance to fund their medical education. Mr. and Mrs. Thomas N. Chewning, the parents of second year medical student, Rush Hamilton Chewning, serve as co-chairs of the Parents Program.

Paul Luther Stine Memorial Scholarship Fund This fund was established in 1996 by the estate of Mildred C. Stine of Hagerstown, Maryland, in memory of her brother. Preference is given to a graduate of Brunswick (Maryland) High School, residents of Frederick County, or residents of Maryland.

Peter D. Olch, M.D. Memorial Scholarship Fund Oliver N. Massengale, Med ‘55, established the Peter D. Olch, M.D. Memorial Scholarship in 1995 in memory of Dr. Olch, Med '55, who trained as a surgeon and pathologist and became the deputy director of the medical history division of the National Library of Medicine of the National Institutes of Health. Upon retirement from the National Library, Dr. Olch was adjunct associate professor in medical history at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences. Dr. Massengale is in private practice in Portland, Oregon. Mrs. Mary B. Olch is Dr. Olch’s widow.

Radiology Fund for Medical Students Scholarship This fund was established in 1984 by the Russell H. Morgan Department of Radiology and Radiological Science. The fund receives ongoing support from the department.

The scholarship is perpetuated by gifts from Mrs. Anthony and the Palisades Educational Foundation.

Randall Scholarship This fund was established in 1961 by an anonymous alumnus.

Richard D. Hahn Scholarship Fund This fund was established in 1980 by the Israel Myers family of Baltimore in honor of their family physician, Richard D. Hahn, A&S ’32, Med ‘36, associate professor emeritus at Johns Hopkins. The Myers family established this fund in recognition of the competence and compassion with which Dr. Hahn served his patients. The fund supports students who intend to specialize in internal medicine or pediatrics.

Richard K. Root Scholarship Fund This fund was established in 1990 for Maryland residents by the estate of Madalyn Schwentker Rosenfeld, Nurs ’30, in memory of her husband, Louis M. Rosenfeld. Mrs. Rosenfeld’s first husband was Francis Schwentker, Med ’29, former director of the Children’s Center, who died in 1954. Dr. Edwards P. Schwentker and Mrs. G. Jackson Philips are Madalyn Schwentker's (Rosenfeld) children.

Richard S. D'Agostino, M.D., Endowed Scholarship Fund This scholarship was established in 2003 by Richard S. D'Agostino, M.D., to provide financial assistance to medical students at the School of Medicine.

Richard Wescott Appleton Scholarship Fund This scholarship was established in 1973 by Vivia B. Appleton, Med '06, SPH '29 (M.P.H.), of Honolulu, Hawaii, in honor of Richard Appleton. Vivia Appleton, who died in 1978, began her career as an instructor in pediatrics at the University of California, then served at hospitals in Europe through World War I.

Rita Meena Raju Memorial Scholarship Fund for Medical Education

Established in 1999 by Dr. and Mrs. Pal P. Raju, of North Chelmsford, Massachusetts, in memory of their daughter, who was a second-year medical student at the time of her death in 1995. Support has also come from the Raju family, friends, and members of the Class of 1997. The fund supports medical students who exemplify Rita Raju's extraordinary accomplishments in community service, women's and children's health, alleviation of suffering among disadvantaged populations, and international health care.

Robert T. White, M.D. Scholarship Fund This fund was established in 2004 by Robert T. White, A&S 1947, Med 1952, via the Greater Alliance Foundation, Inc. Dr. White completed his obstetrical residency and gynecological training at Hopkins before serving as the acting head of the Obstetrics and Gynecological Department at the University of Colorado Medical Center. In 1958 he opened his private practice in Alliance, Ohio, from which he retired in 1990.

Robert, M.D., and Ann Reath Schapiro Scholarship Fund for Medical Education

Established in 2004 by Robert H. Schapiro, Med. ’58. Dr. Schapiro holds a unique place of honor at the School of Medicine, thanks to a tradition he started while still a medical student. He is the creator of the FYBIGMI button, which is distributed at the Match Day festivities for all 4th year medical students as part of this annual rite of passage. He served on the American Board of Internal Medicine and the New England Endoscopy Society. Dr. Schapiro spent his entire professional career at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston where he eventually became the Chief of gastrointestinal endoscopy. His wife, Ann, was a medical student at Hopkins, but did not graduate.

Roger L. von Heimburg, M.D., & Mary J. von Heimburg Scholarship for Medical Education

This fund was established in 1999 by Roger L. von Heimburg, A&S '52, Med '55, and his wife, Mary J. von Heimburg. Retired as a surgeon in private practice in Green Bay, Wisconsin, Dr. von Heimburg died in September 1999. Mrs. von Heimburg served as a staff member in the Department of Medicine at Johns Hopkins. Preference is given to students from the Midwest (Wisconsin, Minnesota, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, and Iowa).

Rose Meinhardt Fund This fund was established in 1989 by the estate of Ms. Meinhardt of Tampa, Florida, for students pursuing careers in medical research.

Rowena Sidbury Hall, M.D., Scholarship for Medical Education of Women in Pediatrics

This fund was established in 2002 by Rowena Sidbury Hall, Med 1943 February, of Silver Spring, Maryland. She served as a member of the faculty at the School of Medicine’s Department of Pediatrics and as a pediatrician at The Johns Hopkins Hospital. Prior to her retirement, Dr. Hall worked with the Montgomery County (MD) Public Health Department and in private practice in Wilmington, North Carolina. Preference in award of the scholarship is given to women interested in pediatrics.

Russell A. Nelson Scholarship Fund This fund was established in 2002 by Russell A. Nelson, Med 1937, and his wife, Ruth J. Nelson, Nurs 1937, through the Russell A. and Ruth J. Nelson Trust and the Ruth J. Nelson Trust. Dr. Nelson served as a Hospital Trustee, a faculty member at the School of Medicine and the Bloomberg School of Public Health, and as president of the Johns Hopkins Hospital. Dr. and Mrs. Nelson both died in 2001.

Samuel H. Brethwaite, M.D. Scholarship Fund This scholarship was established in 1998 by the estate of Samuel H. Brethwaite, Med ‘35, who was a retired internist affiliated with Cornell University’s New York Hospital. Mrs. Ruth V. Brethwaite is his widow.

Samuel H. Payne Scholarship Fund This fund was established by Mosby H. Payne with preference for students from Virginia.

Sharon Fox Scholarship Fund in Memory of Henrietta B. Fox

This scholarship was established in 1967 by the estate of Mr. Fox.

Sheila Sutland Pakula & Lawrence Charles Pakula, M.D., Scholarship Fund

This fund was established in 1998 by Mrs. Sheila Sutland Pakula and her husband, Lawrence C. Pakula, who is associate professor of pediatrics at Johns Hopkins.

Stephen J. Ryan, M.D., Fund Stephen J. Ryan, Jr., Med ’65, and the W. M. Keck Foundation established this fund in 2001 to commemorate his 35th class reunion. Dr. Ryan is the chief of the Doheny Eye Institute at the University of Southern California. Dr. Ryan has a long history with Johns Hopkins University and Hospital, having served on the faculty and staff after completing his residency at the Wilmer Eye Institute. He has also been a member of the National Council for Johns Hopkins Medicine.

Preference in award of this scholarship is given to students who attended Morgan State University.

The Gorham Family Scholarship for Medical Education George W. Gorham, Med ‘54, and his family, established this fund in 2000 to recognize the medical legacy of his father, L. Whittington Gorham, Med ’10, and his grandfather, physician George Elmer Gorham. George Gorham, a member of the Hopkins faculty in 1965, served on the internal medicine faculty at the Cornell University Medical College and is a member of the National Council for Johns Hopkins Medicine.

Established in 2003 by Marilyn Simmons Mandler, Nursing 1956, wife of John I. Mandler, KSAS 1952, Med 1956. Dr. Mandler was a flight surgeon in the Air Force. While in the Air Force he traveled to Alaska, Hawaii, and Japan to complete research on pilot fatigue and disorientation. After Dr. Mandler retired from the Air Force with the rank of major, he worked at institutions such as Holy Redeemer Hospital, Abington Memorial Hospital, Hahnemann University Hospital, Jefferson Medical College and Johns Hopkins Hospital. Dr. Mandler also served as president of the medical staff at Abington Memorial Hospital and as chief of medicine and chief of staff at the Cleveland VA Medical Center. Dr. Mandler was a member of the American Medical Association, the American Urological Association and the Philadelphia Urological Society, and was active in the Johns Hopkins Medical-Surgical Association. Dr. Mandler died in 2001 and is survived by his wife, Marilyn.

The Kathleen MacKay Powell Memorial Fund The purpose of this scholarship is to provide financial assistance to students in the Department of Art as Applied to Medicine.

The Laura L. & Kenneth I. Berns, M.D., Ph.D., Scholarship Fund

Kenneth I. Berns, A&S '64, Med ‘66, and his wife, Laura L. Berns, A&S '63 (M.A.), established this scholarship in 1999 in honor of his 35th reunion and to recognize his devotion to medicine and his lifelong affiliation with the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine. Dr. Berns is a University trustee, a member of the Johns Hopkins Society of Scholars, and has served on the medical faculty. Dr. Berns is the former president and CEO of Mt. Sinai Medical Center.

The Laurence H. & Ida Lea Blackburn Endowed Scholarship for Medical Education

Laurence H. Blackburn, Jr., Med ’55, SPH '65 (M.P.H.), and his wife, Rose A. Blackburn, established this scholarship in 2000 in honor of his parents. Dr. Blackburn retired from the full time practice of occupational and aviation medicine in 1987. Since his retirement, he has served as an industry consultant in the occupational therapy field.

This fund was established in 2003 by Margaret Morris Weiss, Med 1978, and Robert A. The Nancy Burton Esterly, M.D., Scholarship for Medical Education of Women in Pediatrics and Dermatology

This scholarship was established in 2002 by Nancy Burton Esterly, M.D., Med ’60. Dr. Esterly retired as the head of Pediatric Dermatology at the Medical College of Wisconsin and is the former head of Pediatric Dermatology at Northwestern University. She is editor of Pediatric Dermatology. This scholarship is to support a medical student with a preference for women interested in pediatrics and/or dermatology.

The R. Robinson Baker Scholar The Johns Hopkins Medical & Surgical Association established this scholarship to honor Dr. R. Robinson Baker. Dr. Baker received his M.D. from The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in 1954. He held an internship in Surgical Service at The Johns Hopkins Hospital from 1954-1955. After spending two years at the National Heart Institute in Bethesda, Maryland, he returned to Hopkins in 1958 as a Surgical Pathology fellow and served as Chief Surgical Resident in 1961. Upon completion of his residency at Hopkins, Dr. Baker joined the faculty in 1967. Over the past 30 years, Dr. Baker has held a number of positions in the hospital, including surgeon-in-chief of the Oncology Center, surgeon-in-chief of the Thoracic Surgical Service, and Clinical Director for the Johns Hopkins Breast Center at Greenspring. Dr. Baker has been an active alumnus, serving as president of the Johns Hopkins Medical and Surgical Association from 1997-1999.

The Rex Martin, M.D., & Ann Y. Martin Scholarship Fund Rex R. Martin, Med ’50, and his wife, Ann Martin, established this fund in 1999 in commemoration of the 50th anniversary of Dr. Martin’s graduation.

The Ruth P. Young and Joseph M. Young, M.D. Endowed Scholarship Fund

Established in 2004 by Joseph M. Young, Med 1945. After receiving his degree from Hopkins, Dr. Young completed his postdoctoral studies in surgery. He made his career at the Army Veteran’s Administration Hospital in Memphis where he served as Chief of Laboratory Services and as a clinical professor of pathology at the University of Tennessee at Memphis until his retirement in 1986.

The Vander Salm Family Scholarship Fund This fund was established in 2001 by Thomas J. Vander Salm in honor of his 35th reunion. Dr. Vander Salm is the chief of thoracic surgery at Salem Hospital. This fund will provide financial assistance to medical students at the School of Medicine.

Virgil A. Place, M.D., Scholarship Fund This fund was established in 1994 by Virgil A. Place, Med ‘48, an internist and endocrinologist who has spent his medical career in pharmaceutical research. Dr. Place directed the medical research programs for the ALZA Corporation and is chairman of the board of directors and chief scientific officer of VIVUS, Inc. Dr. Place started ZZVAX, a company focused on new hormone delivery systems.

Virginia Romberger Reber Pettijohn Scholarship Fund This fund was established in 1995 by the estate of Mrs. Virginia Pettijohn, an amateur radio operator who met her future husband via short wave radio. During World War II she worked as an engineering draftsman and technical illustrator for Bendix Radio. She later worked for Professional Electronics of Baltimore where she prepared service manuals for National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration satellites. Her husband, Francis J. Pettijohn, Ph.D., was a renowned geologist at Hopkins. Dr. Pettijohn died in 1999 and is survived by his son and daughter, Loren Pettijohn and Clare Pettijohn Maher, and his niece, Mrs. Helen Romberger Powell.

Virginia Wells Davies Fund This scholarship was established in 1981 by the estate of Mrs. Davies.

Vivian B. Allen Scholarship Fund This scholarship was established in 1955 by the Vivian B. Allen Foundation, Inc. to provide scholarship aid for men who are unable to pay their own way for medical training.

W. B. Saunders Company Scholarship in Art as Applied to Medicine

This fund was established in 1964 in honor of Lawrence Saunders upon his retirement after 50 years of distinguished leadership in medical publishing.

Waddie Pennington Jackson Scholarship Fund This fund was established in 1963 by Dr. Jackson, Med '17, in memory of his wife, Bessie Gills Jackson.

Waldo Emerson Floyd, III Scholarship Fund This scholarship was established in 1975 by Class of 1954 representative Waldo Emerson Floyd, Jr., Med ‘54, of Macon, Georgia, in honor of his son, Dr. Waldo E. Floyd III, who trained at Hopkins Hospital and went into practice with his father at the Macon Orthopaedic and Hand Center. His mother, Helen Joann (Peterson) Floyd, A&S ’52 , '52 (M.A.) is also a Hopkins graduate. The Floyd family, friends, and associates have contributed to the scholarship. Warner M. & Lorna Kays Pomerene Fund This fund was established in 1975 by Ohio attorney Warner Pomerene and his wife, Lorna K. Pomerene. Preference is given to students who plan to become general practitioners.

William & Wendyce Brody Scholarship Dr. and Mrs. Brody established this scholarship in 1992 for medical students pursuing a degree in one of the engineering disciplines. Dr. Brody, who became president of Johns Hopkins in 1996, was director of radiology from 1987 to 1994 with faculty appointments in the School of Medicine and the School of Engineering.

William A. Crawley, M.D., D.D.S., Endowed Scholarship Fund

Established in 2004 by William A. Crawley, M.D., D.D.S, Med 1979. After receiving his degree from Johns Hopkins, Dr. Crawley completed his postdoctoral studies in oral surgery, surgery, and plastic surgery at The Johns Hopkins Hospital. He currently serves on the faculty in the School of Medicine and has a private practice in Baltimore. Dr. Crawley has affiliations with several professional societies including the American Association of Plastic Surgeons, the American College of Surgeons, and the American Society of Plastic Surgeons. He is the vice president of The John E. Hoopes Foundation for Plastic Surgery, a former member of the Maryland State Board of Physician Quality Assurance, and past president of the American Society of Maxillofacial Surgeons. Dr. Crawley currently serves as the second vice president of The Johns Hopkins Medical and Surgical Association, serves as the co-chair and on his School of Medicine 25th reunion committee, and has served as his class representative since 1989 and has served on the National Council for Johns Hopkins Medicine since 1991.

Willis C. Penney Memorial Scholarship Fund Mr. Penney’s widow, Della N. Penney, and their daughter, Susan E. Penney, established this fund in 1986 in memory of Mr. Penny.

Winslow Foundation Scholarship Fund Established in 1974 by the W. R. Winslow Residuary Trust and the W. R. Winslow Trust. Preference is given to students from Maryland, the District of Columbia, or North Carolina. Mr. Daniel R. Studnicky is the trust officer.

Wladimir Solowiej, M.D., & Augenia Zebrowska Solowiej Scholarship Fund

This fund was established in 1980 by the estate of Dr. Solowiej. This fund provides two scholarships, one in his name and one in the name of his sister, Augenia Zebrowska. Dr. Solowiej was an otolaryngologist who left Poland in World War II and practiced in Vienna and London before coming to Baltimore.
