22 THE TYCHO BRAHE MUSEUMIn 1576, King Fredrik II bestowed the island of Ven on Tycho Brahe and Brahe built Uraniborg castle surrounded by a magnificent Renaissance garden. The castle is no longer there, but part of the garden has been reconstruc-ted. The Tycho Brahe Museum is housed in the former All Saints Church. Its exhibitions tell of Tycho Brahe’s life and scientific discoveries through archaeological finds, videos and models.

One of the highlights of the museum is the ruins of Tycho Brahe’s underground observatory. At this historic site, there is an eight-minute sound and light show depicting Tycho leading a night of observations.

19 HVENS HEMBYGDSGÅRD, NÄMNDEMANS-GÅRDENThe local history museum run by Ven’s local folklore society dates back to the late 18th century and is a historic building. The museum has exhibitions showing the brickworking era, seafaring, agriculture and ancient relics. The entire museum presents a historic view of peasant society.

3 SPIRIT OF HVEN BACKAFALLSBYN DISTILLERYOne of the world’s smallest, family-owned, pot still distilleries, where everything from mashing to fermenting, distilling, ageing in oak casks and bottling happens under one roof. The distillery offers both guided tours and whisky tasting.

20 ST. IBB’S MEDIEVAL CHURCHIt is impossible to know for certain when the church was built, but the oldest part (the tall building facing the sea) was built in either the late 12th century or the early 13th century. St. Ibb’s church also used to have a tower at the eastern end, but it was demolished in 1726. Amongst the contents of the church are Tycho Brahe’s pew and an altarpiece painted by Tycho Brahe’s court painter Tobias Gemperlin.

37 TYCHO BRAHE’S PAPER MILL The astronomer Tycho Brahe printed his own books and the paper he needed was made using a water-powered paper mill. The water was collected in a large pool, whose

embankments are still visible in the landscape. The mill was demolished in 1602. 38 THE HISTORY OF THE BRICKWORKSAs early as 1878, Norreborg had developed into a major centre forbrick making. Hven Tegelbruk AB was founded in 1884 and eventually became Scania’s largest brick-works. In 1948, the brickmaking era came to an end on Ven, the rising cost of transport to the mainland making it hard for Ven brickworks to compete on price. Even today, you can find remnants of bricks along Ven’s beaches.
