YU TSAIYu Tsai, scientist turned dancer turned designer turned photographer, is quickly becoming a staple on every editor’s hot list. Yu Tsai’s career spans the globe, creating headlines from New York to Beijing. Traveling between his homes in Los Angeles and New York, he is as at home in Hollywood as he is among the fashion glitterati of Manhattan. Favorite Island Activity: “Shooting with the Guess models - next to that, diving with sharks and manta rays.”

CLAUDIA & RALF PÜLMANNSIt’s been a decade since married photography duo Claudia and Ralf Pülmanns merged their talents in the artistic and cosmetic industries. When make-up artist Claudia met photographer Ralf in Germany, she was already working with stars like Lenny Kravitz, while Ralf was booked regularly on shoots all over the world. Now based in Paris, they bring the rare technical understanding of light, composition and style together for truly provocative photography. Favorite Island Activity: “We absolutely love to dive into the shallow water and then retreat to the beach, doing the least possible...”

ELLISTON LUTZThe Philly-born kids photographer was brought up in Europe and has photographed his own four children so much that they now refuse to pose for him! The Vogue Bambini regular loves the unjaded nature of children and while he shoots many types of photography, he remains devoted to the younger set for their freshness and vulnerability. Favorite Island Activity: “Looking for excuses to remain on the Island and not go back to reality.”

AMY SWIFT CROSBYThe bi-coastal Ms. Crosby can be seen sailing off the coast of New England or traipsing up and down the uber-cool Abbot Kinney Boulevard in Venice, CA. A frequent writer and contributor to various luxury publications, she says her favorite island activity is “the art of doing nothing. Seriously. Try it. It isn’t so easy!”

GUESSWHAT

You may know his progressive House tracks ‘cause you follow all the cool DJ’s, indepen-dent radio stations and musicians, or you may have seen his 2008 Grammy nomi-nation. Or maybe you recognize his mug from the turntable at the 2004 Olympics in Athens, Greece. With a great eye for design (see his capsule collection for us!) and a wicked ear for sound, the hottest DJ of the moment takes a few minutes out of his schedule for our Guess reporter. Listen up.

What’s the best thing about being a DJ? There are so many amazing things about being a DJ! For me, the best part of the job is getting to interact with my fans. It’s truly rewarding to make so many people around the world happy with my music.

What’s the hardest part about your job? I think my job is pretty incredible, it’s hard to complain, haha. If I had to single something out, I’d say the travel can be pretty exhausting. I’ll regularly play on 3 different continents in a week, so it can be tiring, but as soon as I get in front of the crowd, it’s completely worth it!

What is your favorite piece from the NYT LYF collection? I’m really happy with the way everything turned out! It was such an amaz-ing experience to work with the brilliant team of designers at Guess. If I had to pick one thing in particular, I really love the men’s leather jacket, but I’m really proud of the entire capsule.

What music best describes this collec-tion? If I had to pick one track to describe the collection, I think it would be “We Own The Night.” This collection is all about energy, look-ing good, and feeling confident!

You are constantly traveling, what are five things you must always take with you? First and foremost, my phone is probably the most important thing I travel with. It’s the way I stay connected to my fans and my friends. My Guess watch so I can keep track of time. My AKG by Tiësto headphones are essential too of course, as are my SD cards with my music collection. Lastly, it would be my Guess leather jacket to look sharp!

Favorite hobbies? I’ve always had a strong interest in fashion. It’s what inspired me to start my own CLVB LIFE clothing line last year and work with Guess. Designing clothes is quickly becoming more than a hobby though.

Of all the locations you have DJ’ed so far, where was your favorite? I’d have to say DJ’ing at the Athens Olympics is at the top of my list of favorites. It was a truly special moment for me as it represented the fact that my music was officially on a global level. The open-ing ceremony was broadcasted to over a billion people. It was really an intense experience.

What song can you listen to over and over again? My remix of Delirium’s “Silence” track is really special to me. It represents the time in my career when I first got noticed in the US and I’ve heard from so many fans that the song is special to them. Whenever I play it, the song brings back some amazing memories.

Essentials for the airplane: It depends what kind of mood I’m in, but generally airplanes are a chance to either sleep or do some work, so I’d say an eye mask or my headphones.

My favorite vacation of all time is… It’s not necessarily a vacation, because I’m work-ing, but I always love the summers I spend in Ibiza. That place is paradise!

What’s your favorite hotel and why? There are too many to name! I travel around so much and stay in so many different places around the world. In each city I have a favorite though.

Our theme this issue is “Island” - can you give us a playlist you love for escaping to the beach or going on vaca-tion? I’ve been really enjoying the most recent album by The Maccabees. I’d have to say, I wouldn’t mind relaxing on a beach with that on repeat :-).

COLOR?!? Yep. Men are rocking colored jeans and shirts on every street from Los Angeles to Moscow.

1DENIM ON DENIM. It’s all about layers when it comes to D on D. We love a T-shirt under a denim shirt or the edginess of multi-colors of denim all in one outfit. The rules are changing, and it’s more about breaking than making them these days.

2) Skinny jean hydration wash dip dye in indigo

3) Lincoln jean humid wash in optic white; Magma wash down blazer

4) Clifton shirt; Horizon linen blazer in Tahitian sand

DARK VS. LIGHT: Dark denim has had its moment in the sun, but lighter washes are really coming back strong. Lighter means a better fit is essential, as you’ll see any wrinkle or sagging much more easily.

DenimRULES+regulationsDon’t ignore this key staple when in your wardrobe! Denim is more than what you wear on your legs; it memorizes your shape, fades (or not) with time and worn correctly, sets your style apart from the crowd.

1) Classic biker jacket; Low rise Kate short

2) Pepper jacket; Brittney Jacket; Longette denim jacquard skirt; Oderan footwear in world blue

3) Pepper jacket; Brittney Jacket; Kate cut-off short

4) Button down studded denim shirt; Brittney skinny ankle; Gelisa footwear in stone wash denim

1

3

SHORT SHORTS: The shorter the better! Frayed edges are huge right now, so let ‘em ride high!

4TO WASH OR NOT TO WASH? Lean toward less is more on this one. Jeans do better and hold their color and shape the less they see your washer. And when you do have to wash, turn them inside out and skip the dryer! Hang ‘em up and let the sun (or heater) do its work.

HOT HAIR!NATASHA SUNSHINE ANTONIONIFounder, Byuti Salons, Los Angeles

1. Wash the night before.Clean hair tends to be too soft or shiny. Day old hair will achieve a less polished, matte look.2. Apply your favorite beach product.(I love Pureology’s Anti-Breakage Twist). Use a dime to nickel size, comb through and go to sleep.3. Awake to unkempt, almost beachy hair. Use a 1 to 1-1/2” barrel curling iron and wrap hair in a candy cane fashion around the iron, curling every other section and swapping the direction of your wrap each time. 4. After ironing hair apply a dime size of your product again by scrunching it throughout to blend the curled and uncurled pieces together. Voila! Beach waves.

NOTE: This style can usually last for two to three days with minor touch ups each day. Go get ‘em, Ladies!

WAX IT, BABY!JODI SHAYSFounder, Queen Bee Salon & Spa, Los Angeles

1. Research your waxer. When you call, ensure that you get the most experienced person there. Is the establishment clean? Look for tell-tale signs of a dirty salon. Hair on the floor or unclean bed linens are all a bad sign. They MUST use medical table paper. Are they using the same wooden stick on you that they used on somebody else? Big no-no. Technicians should wear gloves. The most important aspect of any wax is hygiene. I’m not a fan of places that trim your pubic hair for you. Do you think that they get all of that hair up after they trim it? Probably not - so you could go home with other peoples hair on your feet. Nice.2. Research how to prepare. Grow your hair out at least a quarter of an inch. Know what you are getting into before you get this done. It will hurt your first time, especially if you have been shaving or have very coarse hair. Most good waxing establishments have a website with lots of tips and tricks on how to prepare. We like to tell our clients to pop an Advil 20 minutes before and to please, if they can, take a warm shower before they come in. If you are feeling stressed out before your wax, take some deep yoga breaths - this really helps! 3. Do not get your first wax right before you go on vacation! You could be one of those rare people who have an allergic reaction to it, or worse still, end up with a bad wax in the hands of a poorly trained esthetician and be walking around with a diaper full of ice in between your legs. Make sure you get your first wax at least two months before you go away. 4. Your technician should be educated enough to tell you how to take care of your skin when you leave. Waxed skin is compromised skin and it is your job to make sure it stays squeaky clean. Do not be afraid to ask lots of questions.

SEXY ISLAND SKIN!JENNY EVANSFounder, Saving Faces, Los Angeles

1. Moisturizer: My favorite moisturizer is ISUN Phyto-Infusion 1 & 11.This is truly unique and great for all climates, especially warmer tropical ones because of its lightweight, velvety texture that sinks into the skin like a serum instead of a heavy cream. Skin damage is more rapidly repaired and aging effects are reduced and prevented. Hyperpigmentation is reduced while skin is UV protected.2. Mask:I’m obsessed with ISUN After Sun Mask for a multitude of reasons. It is a travel essential especially in humid, sun drenched climates. If you’ve sat in the sunshine too long this product brings instant relief. Cooling coconut oil and cucumber pull heat out of the skin instantly, offering soothing relief. Blended with herb-infused Aloe Vera, burns and irritations heal more rapidly. 3. Toner:LE MIEUX Iso-Cell Recovery Solution is a medicine cabinet essential! From acne breakouts to bug bites and minor scratches, this wonder product covers all bases. It’s a unique formula providing supplemental nutrients for wound care. It accelerates the healing process and retains moisture for tissue regeneration. Great for sun exposed skin because it instantly takes the red out and soothes ANY skin irritation. 4. Cleanser:I use 302 Professional Skincare 302 Cleanser. This aqueous cleanser is a universal one that’s great for treating all skin types. Ingredients include organic lavender, alkylated sugars from sugar beets, avocado extract, avocatin 302 (Avogen™), urea, lavender oil, tangerine oil and camphor. After a long day in the surf and sand this cleanser is fantastic for removing sunscreen and enviornmental pollutants.

Four beauty pros give their best advice for that effortless beach glow. Here’s what they had to say:

SUNLESS TANNING:The Rules!SUSIE PHILLIPSFounder, Chocolate Sun, Beverly Hills & Santa Monica

1. At Chocolate Sun, we recommend that all other beauty services are done prior to your spray tanning treatment.2. Come to your session fully exfoliated, without lotions, perfumes or deodorant on your skin.3. You should wait eight to ten hours for your treatment to develop, wash gently for your first post treatment shower, and moisturize…moisturize…moisturize…to maintain and extend your beautiful sunless treatment.4. If vacationing, remember to wear an SPF of at least 30, and reapply throughout the day. Although your skin appears tanned, you will still burn without protection.5. If you plan to go in the water, it is best to apply a moisturizer or your SPF prior to getting into the water. This will create a physical barrier for your skin, helping eliminate the drying effects of soaking in water. If your skin dries out, your sunless tan will not last and may break down unevenly.6. It is always a great idea to travel with an enhancer…like Chocolate Sun’s Cocoa Lite Enhancer. This is a gradual way to maintain, “kick up”, and extend the life of your sunless tan while away.

3Even though I don’t wear much make up, I do love products. So I always bring a cosmetic bag that can accommodate my sunscreen, moisturizers, lip balm, travel sized shampoo and conditioner, plus a light fragrance. I’m fortunate to have my pick of the litter! Riviera Maya collection available on StephanieJohnson.com.

1My number one priority is sun protection – so a hat and sunglasses are essential. You want a hat that has full facial coverage but that also looks timeless and chic! chic!

7Flip Flops are an island must. My choice over the years continues to be Havianas.

5The one makeup item I do use for islanding is bronzer. I don’t tan my face EVER, so I’ll frequently use a great color by Laura Mercier.

8But the ALL TIME most important thing to bring is a relaxed attitude when going on vacation, especially in the islands. Nothing moves very fast and no one is on your schedule. So just relax and enjoy the pace. This is what it’s all about….slowing down and enjoying the moment!

Personally, I think bracelets finish off a beach look without being contrived. I adore a series of small ones that stack on the wrist in a sort of messy-glam fashion.

6

A couple of light dresses will get you through days as well as evenings on-island. They’re simple to hand-wash and look easy and breezy for breakfast or dinner.

GET GONÇALO’S LOOKASHLEY STREICHERCelebrity GroomerAshley is a native Californian. With hours logged on the sand as well as set, she knows a thing or two about men’s beach fashion. She shares the same secrets she uses for A-List celebs:

1. BEACH HAIR:To get good beach hair, start with a good hair cut, shorter on the sides and longer on the top. This works well because you can style it slicked back or put some texturizing cream in and wear it tousled (beachy).Recommended: Bumble and Bumble Texture Cream (for an undone look.)Magic Move (for a sleek look.)

2. GREAT SKIN: Men’s skin is quite different from women’s; it ages later but more suddenly and it also is aggressed daily from shaving. It needs a skincare regime specifically for those needs.Recommended: I love the whole Clarins Men’s line, from shaving cream to a revitalizing gel.

3. SHAVING: I’d say keep it close to a 5 o’clock scruff. It looks more natural and masculine to have that shadow. Keep it shaved down with a small electric shaver.Recommended: I love “The Peanut.” It’s small and easy to use but runs like a full size pair of barber clippers. I also keep my peanut in my men’s kit!

4. TAN: Stay natural with the tan – don’t go overboard. I prefer some healthy color but ONLY from the sun.

5. NAILS: It’s always a great surprise to see a man with a great pair of hands. Keep them manicured; finger nails should be short and cuticles pressed, but nails should not be too shiny. Have the manicurist give them a “rough buff.”

The über-sexy Portuguese Guess model doesn’t have to try too hard for his good looks. Nevertheless, we asked celebrity groomer Ashley Streicher for some tips any man can use.

GUESSWHERE

ISLAND-ING is a way of life, a way of doing something, a way of being. It’s the slow, easy gait of vacationers on an endless stretch of beach, or the thrill of a burning fuchsia sunset from the deck of a reggae bar.

Island behavior is distinct from any other because it is purposefully slow and phenomenally beautiful.

Just the taste of a fresh coconut can feel luxurious, like a gift from the gods.

Here, we’ve detailed all of the Tahitian islands so that you might one day visit them.

There’s a reason we shot our campaign in Bora Bora; Simply nothing can touch it’s unadorned beauty and sacred, harmonious energy.

1 Using fabric paint and a wide paint brush, paint a solid stripe across the t-shirt. Repeat this with an equal amount of space.

2 Apply a second layer of paint (a darker shade) to give the stripe a texture.

4 Slice the t-shirt with a blade and then attach safety pins for an embellished detail.
