Lent for 2011 will start on Wednesday,
the 9th of March and will continue
for 46 days until Saturday,
the 23rd of April.
Lenten Observances
Lent is the season which runs from Ash Wednes-
day until the Mass of the Lord's Supper exclu-
sive.
Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are days of
total fast and abstinence. The Fridays of Lent are
days of abstinence.
In keeping with the spirit and meaning of the
Lenten fast, Catholics are encouraged to observe
the Good Friday fast through Holy Saturday and
until the celebration of the Easter Vigil.
The law of fasting binds persons from the
completion of their 18th year to the beginning
of their 60th year, i.e., from the day after their
18th birthday to the day after their 59th birthday.
The law of fasting allows only one full meal
a day, but does not prohibit taking some food in
the morning and evening, observing as far as
quantity and quality are concerned, approved
(continued on page 2)
Lenten Observances (continued from page 1)local custom. The order of meals is optional; i.e., the full
meal may be taken in the evening instead of at midday.
Also: 1) The quantity of food taken at the two lighter
meals should not exceed the quantity taken at the full
meal; 2) The drinking of ordinary liquids does not break
the fast.
The law of abstinence binds persons from the com-
pletion of their 14th year, i.e., from the day after their
14th birthday throughout life.
The law of abstinence forbids the use of meat. It does
not forbid the use of eggs, the products of milk or condi-
ments made of animal fat. Also permissible are soups
flavored with meat, meat gravy and sauces.

Rosaries for our troopsIn support of our service men and womenin Iraq and Afghanistan, Monaghan Coun-cil, working through the St. Vincent dePaulSociety, is collecting rosaries during Lent. Aspecial basket for the rosaries will be dis-
played in the lobby of the Council. We encourage your donation of rosaries as a personal
Lenten project. The “Rosaries for Soldiers” collectionwill begin March 13th, the first week of Lent and end onApril 10th.
Last year 346 rosaries were gathered, blessed and pre-sented to the St. Vincent dePaul Society by our Council. In addition to your donating personal rosaries, pleaseconsider asking your own parish to join us in this veryworthwhile endeavor.
The “Rosaries for Soldiers” project is a perfect ex-ample of our charitable and patriotic work, It is simpleand easy yet can mean so much to the spiritual well-being of our men and women in uniform. Almost everyfamily has a few extra rosaries around the house. Gatherthem together, drop them off at Monaghan, and help usput them in the hands of our soldiers. Our devotion tothe Mother of God and the graces we receive throughher intercession lead us to her Devine Son. May yourdonation lead our soldiers to a deep inner peace andgrace they so much deserve at this time.
Thank you, Don Hall

A wee drop of humour1. An American lawyer inquired, “Paddy, why is
it that whenever you ask an Irishman a question,he answers with another question?”
“Who told you that?” asked Paddy.
2. Mrs. Feeney shouted from the kitchen, “Is thatyou I hear spittin' in the vase on the mantel piece?”
“No,” said himself, “but I'm gettin' closer all thetime.”
3. “O'Halloran,” asked the pharmacist, “did thatmudpack I gave you improve your wife's appear-ance?”
“It did surely,” replied O'Halloran, “but it keepsfallin' off.”
4. “I'd like some nails”, Mick requested of thetraveling tinker. “How long would you like them?”asked the man. “Forever, if that's all right withyou,” said Mick.
