to the international youth arts festival 2012

Well... Here we are again! Welcome to Creative Youth’s fourth International Youth Arts Festival, a celebration which is rapidly becoming one of the most important events on the youth arts calendar - and this year there is over three weeks of it for you to enjoy!

The journey began in late 2008, when a passionate group of individuals decided to establish a new festival in Kingston which would dedicate itself to showcasing the very best in young people’s work, and prove that youth arts was to be celebrated and not tolerated. This, however, was never going to be an elitist venture, something which only selected those who had had the privilege of opportunity, this was always about allowing every single young person who wanted to be involved the opportunity to realise their potential through the arts.

This mission statement which I was charged with in 2008 is always in the back of my mind as we develop and grow. This year I feel we have made a huge leap in opening up opportunities to every single young person by creating a dedicated workshop week which will launch the festival. The workshops are run by a combination of inspirational recognised practitioners and equally inspirational young companies who make up our Creative Talent mentorship programme (See page 78). There really is something for everyone – whether you want to record an album in a week, promote it and launch it or you want to make giant carnival puppets then IYAF this year is the place to be!

Creative Youth, the organisation which delivers IYAF also continues to expand its year long programme of work and now mentors 8 young companies throughout the year assisting them to develop sustainable businesses and careers. The young companies we mentor are consistently producing creative projects in the borough and this combined with our training for up to 25 young interns and 120 volunteers all contributes to realising our vision that Kingston will become the most flourishing creative town in the country, a town that allows any young person with an idea to make it a reality.

IYAF is the flagship celebration of Creative Youth and has grown dramatically since its first festival in 2009, from 450 participants to just under 5000 in 2011 with audiences growing from 3000 to just over 16000. This year, I just know the party will be one that really goes down in history. Over 20% of participating companies this year are international, a new dynamic which is going to bring a very special flavour to this year’s festivities.

I sit here almost 3 months before the festival starts, writing my introduction with a huge grin on my face as I picture our volunteers animating the streets with their smiles, the young performers lighting up all 15 venues, audiences with mouths agog with surprise as they realise what talent our young people possess and I am content, that every day in the build up is worth it – just for the festival to be underway.

All that is left for me to do is wish you an incredible 24 days... want my advice? Go and buy a festival pass (it’s a bargain!) which means you can see as much as humanly possible, talk to the young people you see in the streets and venues, share your favourite shows with your friends and family and if you’re not too exhausted... join us in the festival club at the end of the day for a drink and a dance... Oh... and relax your face – it hurts to smile this much.

The contemporary setting takes out any perceived political correctness, bringing it back to just being human – whilst being truthful and honourable to the original text.

Babeldom was set up in 2009 by a group of students interested in works that explore the complexities of human relationships. Full of emotional intensity, Babeldom specialises in intimate settings and troubled characters. This is our 3rd year at IYAF.

Big Hats, Banjos and Boots? Not quite.

The play follows the life of Jamie Carris, a troubled soul from a broken home, through 3 periods in his life and his disconnected relationships with those closest to him; his girlfriend, halfbrother and daughter. What follows is a gripping exploration of crime, responsibility and regret.Written by Simon Stephens, Country Music was inspired by Stephens’s work with inmates in prisons across England.

Ebert may be an eggbox, but Ebert has a dream: to be recycled into a newspaper. He lives on a rubbish dump thriving with all sorts of creatures living in fear of The Muncher, an evil machine where waste gets burned instead of being re-used. Then one day Ebert gets snatched! How will he ever accomplish his dream?!

Orchestrated with puppets, song and a pre-show experience, it’s sure to teach everyone the importance of recycling.

Recent graduates of Rose Bruford College, ‘Cat vs Casey’ create visual devised work that appeals to a diverse audience. Primarily adopting a European practice towards theatre the company roots its style in storytelling through use of the physical body.

So you may have heard of Odysseus and Achilles, but we guarantee you haven’t heard the epic tale of Zeis.

In this 40-minute physical piece we join Zeis as he suffers banishment, survives ferocious storms and encounters numerous mythical creatures. But this is no ordinary epic tale... as modern day situations become entangled, a fusion of old and new appears and begs the question: perhaps life today isn’t so different?

A one-woman company influenced by classical Russian drama that strives to explore the psychology of the character and its many facets. The company is mostly interested in producing contemporary pieces of writing in classical form and promoting opera.

The Accompanist is a solo performance piece based on “The Accompanist” by Marcel Mithois, written in 1960. The adaptation has been performed in different countries in a number of languages. It incorporates music and theatre to create an in-depth story of one character. It is the ‘cri de coeur’ of an offended artist and a rollercoaster of human emotions squeezed into one monologue.

Nigeria-based Day Waterman Drama Company offer high quality creative drama that leads to public performances and self-confidence building. Our students’ age range is 13 – 15 years. The Gods Are Not To Blame is Ola Rotimi’s retelling of Sophocles’ “Oedipus the King” using traditional African settings and characters. The play is strongly driven by African belief in destiny and man’s attempt to turn it around. Gbonka, the King’s ward, tries to re-orchestrate the destiny of King Adetusa’s new born baby, who should have been killed at birth to avert a catastrophic future of killing his father and marrying his mother.

Infuenced by Samuel Beckett and Carl Jung, as well as European theatre practice, the piece

flows and changes every time, as do we.

This is a comedic and absurd retelling of Shakespeare’s Much Ado About Nothing, told by a young woman who has been trying to find her way through depression, bereavement and post-traumatic stress. Using a combination of visual and physical theatre, puppetry, storytelling and original music, this piece will give the audience a completely new take on the story of Beatrice and Benedick which will keep the audience on their toes with a smile on their faces.

KDS Act support this production which is created by first, second and third year drama and dance students from Kingston University. The Lieutenant of Inishmore was first performed in the middle of March as an extra curriculum production at the Reg Bailey building, with great success.

“The Lieutenant of Inishmore” is a terrific black comedy from the pen of multi award winning playwright Martin Mc Donagh (the writer of hit film In Bruges).The play is set firmly in the political landscape of Ireland in 1993 and is a hilarious cocktail of terrorism, politics, love stories and gore with characters who try to save their country by amongst other things… killing a cat!

“The Red Balloon” tells the story of a small boy’s friendship with a balloon and explores the poignancy of a child’s imagination. BREAKING BOUNDARIESAllana graduated from the Dance Degree at Roehampton University in 2010 and created ARC. The company enables dance students from the University of Surrey to have performance experience during their studies. The choreography is innovative, contemporary and challenges the conventions of dance.

The contemporary piece “Breaking Boundaries” challenges the audience - by varying the movement from energetic jumps and travelling sequences to restrained mobility. The company have experimented with the idea of isolation and silence in comparison to releasing, “breaking out” and sound/music. The piece has been created using various forms of dance to create a unique style, including hip-hop, ballet, and various contemporary techniques.

KCA aims to meet the needs of its members and supporters through the provision of regular educational and social activities. KCA’s objectives are to promote Chinese arts and culture across the Royal Borough of Kingston and neighbouring boroughs, encouraging community cohesion.

Fan dances are generally divided into folk dances and formal classical dances. Folk dances include the Tai Chi Fan Dance. This piece adds the different elements for space, time and dynamics to traditional Tai Chi Dance and also uses the fan as the significance of weapon to create the fighting styles of the duet. It focuses around powerful dance movements with a constant dynamic rhythm.

StemKu Dance Company is a collective of highly versatile dancers and artists who have been working together since 2009. Making dances is like telling a story, it’s a composition of bodies in space, of characters with special little attributes. StemKu’s work is driven by the comical, the exaggerations of people and animals.

Having trained at KU Dance, their style is hard to define as they have trained in 16 different styles, from Contemporary to Chinese Wushu and Fem.

A boat carrying about 40 musicians will sail down the River Thames and stop near Charter Quay, outside Browns and Frere Jacques, with the beautiful backdrop of Home Park behind it. There is nothing more relaxing than to sit in the restaurants, or stand on the bank, listening to music float across the river in this idyllic setting. Kingston has wonderful things to offer, both in its scenery and in the quality of its young musicians.The concert lasts for about an hour and a half.

The Children and Youth Choir of St. Remigius Düsseldorf was founded in 1996 and is conducted by Petra Verhoeven. The choir now comprises 180 children. It focuses mainly on religious music but also successfully performs musicals and secular music.

The Youth Choir of St. Remigius Düsseldorf from Germany will give a religious concert of German, Latin and English church songs. The group consists of 50 singers, aged from 10 to 16, accompanied by Gerhard and Birgit Michalski (piano and flute). In Germany they have successfully taken part in many choir competitions and are well-known for their beautiful, entertaining and moving performances. Not only will we have live music in town every weekend of the festival, we will also be bringing the party all day and all night in the Rose Theatre’s Culture Cafe, with live music every lunch time, pre show and post show. We’re looking for young aspiring filmmakers worldwide to enter their films as part of this years Birdies Film Festival.

This year our film themes have been broken down into two sections. We will be looking for films that fall in the following categories:

- General: Films of any theme - Silent Cinema

Every film must be under 15 minutes long, be copied onto DVD minus R, and the content of the film must be suitable for audiences of 12 and over i.e. no bad language, nudity, offensive content etc. The deadline for film entries is Thursday 31st May.

Arts education for development and employment. Through the arts, ZYDT is able to address the key issues that concern the welfare and development of youth. ZYDT helps Zimbabwean young artists to secure international opportunities and contacts, while building their audience base locally.

Africa Reflections: Crafts is an exhibition of ethnic jewellery from African natural seeds, bones, cow horns, cow bones and bamboo. Items include necklaces, earrings and bracelets, wrist watches (with frames made of cow horn), African clothing and wooden and stone sculptures. The jewellery is made with the help of Zimbabwean rural students who regard it as a source of their destiny. The proceeds from the sale of the jewellery will be directed towards the provision of school fees and proper educational resources, such as reading books for children in various rural communities.

NB This exhibition will be free to view in the foyers of the Rose Theatre, however admittance into the performance will cost £5 - £15.

It is an event aimed at bringing together the creative industries and promoting artistic freedom among young people as well as providing a platform for collaboration and networking.

All art tells a story, all art is inspired by real stories, and so all art should be freely created and presented.

Kingston’s streets come alive with colour, creativity and plenty of surprises as contemporary carnival performers, giant puppets and energy fuelled musicians take over the streets in the much loved opening carnival parade of IYAF. A Carnival Camp will be running all of the previous week with some of the most exciting practitioners in the UK delivering a range of carnival based workshops allowing anyone who wishes to to get involved with the parade the opportunity to do so! (See Workshops section, p68)

Circus Suburbia are a collective of young and energetic circus performers and teachers who have been influenced and taught by many of the great circus companies including The Circus Space, Swamp Circus and Gandini Juggling. This year Creative Youth received funding as part of the Mayor of London’s Outer London Fund to convert the delivery area and car park of Bishop’s Palace House into a semi-permanent flexible, dynamic performance space which will bring to life this underused area of Kingston.

The Children’s Team at Kingston Libraries run an annual programme of free Rhyme Times, Story Times and Book Clubs for children of all ages across the borough. We are very happy to be able to support the International Youth Arts Festival again this year.

Rhyme Time is a fun and interactive singing sessions for babies, toddlers and pre-school children with their parents and carers. It’s big, loud and lots of fun, with songs you’ll know and some you won’t have heard before. This session is held in the Rose Theatre cafe so it’s the perfect place to meet for a coffee beforehand.

As part of the London 2012 Cultural Olympiad, Kingston University Collegiate Music will present three webcasts of live performances which take place simultaneously in three different countries – the UK, USA and the Netherlands. Each of the performances will feature original music by student composers, original dance by student choreographers and original sound design by music technology students.

Imagine a dancer in one country and an orchestra in another country performing the same piece at the same time – then add another dancer in a third country, whose every movement is turned into sound by an innovative computer programme.If you can imagine this, then you can imagine Bodies in Motion – or come and see it for yourself, on July 9th, 10th and 12th 2012. It will be an entirely new performance experience!

“Farewell, My Concubine” recalls the last moment when Xiang Yu, a patriotic hero, expresses his deepest feelings for his land, his beloved concubine and his faithful steed. It is a classic tale which displays the intricate affection between Xiang Yu and Yu Ji, his concubine. The couple choose to end their lives in a magnificent but tragic way to signify their intense devotion to each other and their land.

“Farewell, My Concubine” is a well-loved Chinese classic legend that has been told and retold and has moved countless hearts for generations.

However, the chief spirit medium of the land will have nothing of her return as her mother was forced into exile 18 years back. A fantastic opportunity for keen dancers to work with choreographers from some of the best dance companies in the UK. Five different choreographers work with the same group of people for five days, each creating two minutes of choreography in their own distinct style. Each day will begin with the new choreographer being allowed to see the last 15 seconds of the previous day’s work and having to take over the piece from there (think a dance version of the writing game, Consequences!)

The final 10 minute piece will be performed as the finale of Kinetic Visions, our major dance night at the Rose Theatre on the 14th July.

Choreographers are from Rambert Dance Company, Sakoba Dance, Motionhouse and BalletBoyz.

All participants must attend every session.To book onto this project you will need to send a covering letter detailing your experience, as places are limited and anticipated to be in high demand. A social enterprise based in Surbiton, Circus Suburbia are freelance performers and teachers who perform internationally and teach locally. We strive to deliver exciting contemporary circus entertainment, whilst sharing our skills and enthusiasm with the next generation of potential circus artists, and to use circus workshops to help young people develop skills they can use in their everyday lives.

Join Circus Suburbia during the workshop week to learn ground based circus skills such as juggling, unicycle, stilt and globe walking, acrobatics and hula hoop.

Learn the secrets of devised theatre in this one-week intensive workshop series with Jennifer Monk finishing with a professional performance. Jennifer will facilitate the workshop and encourage performers to push their boundaries and support their acting craft in a fun and safe environment producing an entertaining, exciting and enlightening piece of theatre called “Dear Diary”. The young actors will learn acting techniques in script writing, improvisation, characterisation, stagecraft, scene work, monologue work, voice and movement.

ONCE UPON A TIME...Filskit Theatre CompanySchools Project

Filskit Theatre aim to create work that ignites the imagination of children and adults alike. By mixing original music with shadow work, a dash of light and a sprinkle of movement, they create their very own Filskit blend of show.

“Once Upon a Time” is a project for Year 6 children, preparing to make the transition from Primary to Secondary School. Using a traditional tale as a stimulus, children will use their own creative ideas to explore the transitional themes within the story. The workshop supports Filskit’s production of Snow White which is being performed at the Rose Theatre.

Children will work alongside our performers, taking an ensemble approach to combining performance techniques with multimedia.

The project will culminate in a sharing of the work created throughout the week.

This is a schools project and not open to the public.

General Silliness Productions is an independent youth theatre company with a passion for entertaining. They specialise in physical theatre comedy and are trained in the traditional Commedia Dell’Arte style. They have had two successful years at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival.

Transport yourselves back to the olde streets of Venice where you’ll find scheming old men, opportune servants and rich young lovers with more vanity than sense. This workshop will guide you through the basics of Commedia Dell’Arte using physical theatre exercises, fun games and improvisation. Learn to lazzi with the innamorati and the zanni, creating your own short Commedia Dell’Arte performance at the end of the session.

Please bring your own bad Italian accent!

WCTT, a London based charity, runs a range of theatre projects for young people, including those who otherwise would struggle to take part. Our Youth Theatre, run by IsoProductions, develop inclusive and exciting new productions with professional production values.

Senior students from IsoYouth Company draw on the techniques used in creating their new piece, Absolute Power, to present this workshop, centred on devising techniques. Discover how to bring stories to life and create theatre from a variety of stimuli, including pictures, music and your own experiences. The workshop will end with the participants presenting for each other a brief, informal sharing of the new material created.

Participants should be comfortable working in a group and performing in front of their peers.

CHANGESMoonbeam-Arts.orgSchools Project

Moonbeam Arts provides therapeutic arts sessions for all ages and abilities, including art, sand play, drama, dance, puppetry, music, mask and games! Moonbeam tries to bring a quality of sensitivity, exuberance and calm to all manner of creative activities and likes to have a laugh and hope all participants have great fun during the sessions. Moonbeam takes part in short and long term projects such as parades, festivals, school projects, community centres, fundraisers etc

The workshops are aimed at y2 and y6 pupils who are in a period of transition into another school. The theme is the changing seasons as a metaphor for growth and transformation on a personal level, which is extremely relevant in regards to the PSHE curriculum. The children will experience drama, movement, voice, yoga and breathing exercises, ultimately creating a piece of ephemeral art.

Save the World Club’s mission is to promote environmental action and self-empowerment through humour, art, education and entertainment. They will be running two mosaic workshops in central Kingston at the Kingston Environment Centre for Save the World Club on Thursday evening and Friday morning for the first week of the IYAF.

Each week of the festival, a different traditional fairy tale will be told with singing, dancing, acting and music. The story teller helps the children act out parts of the story and become the characters within it. Come fight dragons, rescue princesses, find buried treasure and live happily ever after!

Our Friends RecordsOur Friends Records are a Kingston based music promotions company who have been working with IYAF since its inception in 2009. Since the formalisation of the Creative Talent programme in 2010 our support has allowed OFR to receive training and mentorship from internationally renowned festival programmers, Continental Drifts, has assisted in expanding the number of events they run in the borough to eight per month and has invested in capital equipment allowing them to become a self sufficient company. This year they are programming a phenomenal and record breaking number of events during the festival!

“Creative Youth has been the engine behind the growth of Our Friends Records, allowing us to develop our company from a small-time hobby into a much larger scale venture. The continued support and mentoring, as well as investment, has helped us grow into an organisation which will continue to provide essential artistic opportunities for Kingston’s youth. We would certainly not be the company we are today without the support of Creative Youth and we are so excited about the future!”

In 2010 Creative Youth launched its CREATIVE TALENT programme, supported by The Foyle Foundation. Over the last two years this programme has continued to expand and now supports seven young companies.

The Creative Talent programme identifies young and emerging artists and organisations who have the potential to become excellent creative practitioners. It gives them the artistic, business and strategic support to become flourishing, challenging, exciting organisations of the future. The programme provides year long support and encourages the artists to push their boundaries, create new work and work in collaboration with other organisations to create inter-disciplinary work in addition to developing and mentoring their core skills and products. Importantly Creative Youth works in partnership with its key partners and sponsors to ensure that these young companies are equipped with key business skills allowing them to turn their visions into commercial ventures ensuring that the arts continue to prosper and be a fundamental part of the future of Britain.

Through Creative Talent we are investing in the future of the arts and putting our faith in the young people who will inspire future generations. The seven key companies that Creative Talent is supporting are:

Smoking ApplesSmoking Apples aims to create physical, visual, puppetry based theatre that specifically aims to engage the adult imagination. Over the last year Creative Youth has provided Smoking Apples with collaborative opportunities to devise new work for multiple projects and is currently working with the Apples to secure a permanent rehearsal space for all Creative Talent companies.

“Smoking Apples have been working with Creative Youth as part of their Creative Talent programme for the past 2 years. During this time, they have been a constant source of support and helped us to deal with the reality of turning a theatre company into a viable business. We are constantly saying, ‘if only we could do this is all the time!’”

DumbshowDumbshow is an ensemble of actors, directors, writers and musicians who come together in various combinations to make theatre with a vibrant physical aesthetic, using live music alongside text to create and tell stories. Dumbshow worked as artists in residence during IYAF 2011 before taking three shows to Edinburgh. In April this year they successfully received an Arts Council England grant to tour their production of Clockheart Boy.

Circus SuburbiaCircus Suburbia are a dynamic, young, contemporary circus company providing high quality entertainment at events and festivals as well as circus training, workshops and community engagement. Creative Youth’s support has allowed Circus Suburbia to co-ordinate a community circus show performed for the finales of IYAF in 2010 and in 2011. It also raised the funds to allow the research and development of an aerial act which they could continue to tour nationally and generate income for the company. In April 2012 Creative Youth secured funding to send members of Circus Suburbia’s Youth Circus to Germany for a ten day project with Polish and German partners. Most recently Creative Youth have secured funding from the GLA Mayor’s Outer London fund to convert an unused space into a contemporary circus space which Circus Suburbia will take responsibility in programming and animating.

“Before we met Creative Youth we had plans to grow a small entertainment company, and to teach evening circus classes in Surbiton. This however all changed when Creative Youth gave us the challenge of a full scale circus project which would really push us in areas we previously had no experience in! Creative Youth has certainly given us challenges this last year, which at times have been daunting to say the least, but there has always been the support there to help us and the belief that we can pull these challenges off.”

Circus Suburbia are launching Space @ Riverside on the 7th / 8th July and Katie Hardwick, director of Circus Suburbia is co-programming the dance and circus stage at Eagle Brewery Wharf with StemKu.

StemKuStemKu Dance Company is a London based dance company, which has emerged out of Kingston University’s Undergraduate Dance Degree, and are their touring resident company. They are a collective of dancers and artists from various training background, who work together to create exciting, fun and engaging performances. Patrons include Matthew Bourne and Jonzi D.

StemKu perform Illuminations at Dorich House and at Kinetic Visions at Rose Theatre both on the 14th July. Selina Welter, Director of StemKu, programmes the Dance and Circus stage at Eagle Brewery Wharf alongside Circus Suburbia.

byMoonlightThe newest addition to our Creative Talent programme! byMoonlight’s aim is to create exciting, innovative and fearless theatre to encourage audiences to re-visit classic texts with them in fresh settings. Their engaging and open ensemble style is full of energy and movement which is quickly becoming its trademark.

All Creative Talent companies will be artists-in-residence for the duration of the festival. They will each be performing already established shows during the festival at various theatres and will also be collaborating, developing new work, leading workshops for the public and testing new work in ‘scratch’ nights. Little CauliflowerLittle Cauliflower is a Canterbury based company founded in 2010 and are the resident Graduate Theatre Company of the School of Arts at the University of Kent. They aspire to make theatre for all ages that leaves our audience feeling uplifted and entertained.
