Narrator

3rd person Omniscient: Knowing it all. The narrator (not a character in the

story), can move easily from the mind of one character, to the mind of the next character.

A “bird’s eye” view of events going on in the story.

Text Dependent Questions:

1) Re-read this passage on page 152:“The feud might, perhaps, have died down or been compromised if the personal ill will of the two men had not stood in the way; as boys they had thirsted for one another’s blood, as men each prayed that misfortune might fall on the other…” (152).What perspective do you get from the omniscient narrator that you would probably not get if only one of the two men were telling the story? If the story wasn’t told in 3rd person omniscient, the perspective I would get would be only one man’s opinion of the other man’s. I wouldn’t know that they both equally dislike each other and have wished for bad things to happen to each of them.

Text Dependent Questions:

2) Re-read the passage taken from page 154: “ Ulrich was silent for a few minutes and lay listening to the weary screeching of the wind. An idea was slowly forming and growing in his brain, an idea that gained strength every time that he looked across at the man who was fighting so grimly against pain and exhaustion. In the pain and weakness that Ulrich himself was feeling, the old fierce hatred seemed to be dying down” (154).

How does the author’s use of omniscient narrator affect your understanding of Ulrich’s character? Explain.
