It is a story of an inn named The Yankee Pedlar Inn, which is about toclose in a few days when a horrible and terrifying event happened on Claire(major protagonist), one of the remaining two staffs of the hotel. Luke is theother innkeeper who managed a website of the inn--telling stories, postingvideos and pictures of the history along with horrible, present-day events.Claire became interested on picturing out the reason why Madeline O'Malley, dubbed as the widow of Yankee Pedlar and an 1800s lady who used tocelebrate, together with her husband, her honeymoon on Yankee Pedlar Inn;unfortunately, her spirit is still roaming around the inn. And this quest madeClaire interested in finding out why. Though scared, Claire continued toknow the real story of Madeline O'Mally's tragic death by hanging on thebasement of the inn. A known personality Mrs. Jones or preferably Leechecks-in on the hotel. She has a psychic power to communicate with thespirits with her pendulum; she is also able to see the happeningsthat will happen anytime, unexpectedly. There are only 3 guests on the inn--Mrs. Jones, the mother and son, and an old man, who, ironically, celebratedhis honeymoon with his, now dead, wife on same inn.

In midst of searching the truth about Madeline O'Malley, Luke

pronounced that the website about the inn is just a lie, a set-up , but some ofthem are true. Claire and Luke started to record in every room the noiseactivity that might lead them to a voice of Madeline O'Malley. Claire heardsome unbearable noises such as crying lady, playing piano, etc; but most ofthe time, it is hardly static. One time, Luke and Claire decided to include intheir personal investigation the down of the basement. As Claire called for the

spirit of Madeline O'Malley to make a sign of her existence within their areathrough voice, Luke, who wore the device for hearing sounds beyond a mancan hear, heard something whispering. He removed the device off his ear andsuddenly, Claire saw Madeline O'Malley behind him. Luke ran off and left

Claire. Claire immediately came to Lee for help. They went downstairs to thebasement where Lee saw an event that would lead to the death of Claire. Leepronounces that all of them should leave the inn. Claire approached the oldman, who happens to be on the 3rd floor, and she sees his dead bodyswimming in his own blood in the bathtub. She again looked for Lee downthe basement if ever she is there, with no proof at all. Downstairs, she saw thedead old man that scared her a lot, and made her scream aloud. She continudon the inside of the basement where she again saw the old man then thehanged lady in white. Until she is trapped inside a room with the lady in

white. Claire died. Luke and Lee are the remaining alive then.

Movie Review:First Shot: Pictures of the building of The Yankee Pedlar Inn and its

interior from time-to-timeFinal Shot: Room 214, then banged door

The first question I raised about the movie is, "Is this movie book-based?" since the movie is divided into three (3) chapters, showed directly, which is hardly a property owned by novels and other kinds of books. Thechapters are named: (1) The Long Weekend, (2) Madeline O'Malley, and (3) AFinal Guest and also an Epilogue. But thanks to the division; this helps mecategorize my review about the movie.

The first chapter mainly introduces the characters and even the conflicthas already been discussed. Some of the information that could be used tocontextually and intertextually review the movie are the following (it is up toyou to consider this things listed, no actual proof from the writer of the film, but this would probably help you earn a degree of reviewing such movies):

Room 214 claimed by Claire Room 224 of Mrs. Jones/Lee The Yankee Pedlar Inn website Traditional shocking clip of a room with the rocking chair on the center

[Spirits] Only makes them visible to someone alone or shows to a roomnearly empty

    One-eyed cyclops

The first chapter also bags some statements that could be used asquotable quotes: "Optimism is just a higher form of optimism. If you expectnothing from people, then you go through life being pleasantly surprised."(Luke). Even the history of Madeline O'Malley, which is already introduced inthe beginning of the movie, is written on the inn's website [not the full text, even exact words are yet to be tested]:"The Yankee Pedlar, a hotel that dates back to the mid 1800s, had seen its fairshare of guests, weddings, love, death, and tragedy--but chief among them isthe tragic story on Madeline O'Malley--widow of the Pedlar.

Picture of Madeline O'Malley from the Yankee Pedlar

Inn's website. Text on the right is a part of her history.

The specific details of her sad story have often been disputed by paranormalscholars and armchair ghosts' hunters alike, but one thing is for sure, shecame to the Pedlar as a guest... and she has never left. The 1800sBack in the 1800s , The Yankee Pedlar Inn was a smaller establishment. Thesecond, larger wing had not yet been built. And the Inn was confined to a

The edges that shown on the first chapter that would continue to thesucceeding chapters are (maintaining this things in mind would help you tounderstand better, if not fully, the movie):

Ability of Luke in paranormal activities (but this is very little) There are only two guests this time War-freak attitude of Claire

The piano at the lobby of the inn that plays itself while

Claire is wearing the device in her ears.

The second chapter shows extreme and strong movements ofcharacters, such as the discovery of the basement by Claire herself, therecording of noise activities in every room done by Claire, the piano playingby itself heard and even seen by Claire, the forced checking-out of the motherand her son due to Claire's negative attitudes as seen by the mother, etc. Someof the noted things that could help reviewing the movie contextually andintertextually are (take note of the following to help you earn an edge inunderstanding the movie better than usual watching it):

The mug with the print 'Somebody Has a Case of the

Mondays!!!' which could be a possible contextual view

of the inclusion of this in the movie.

Room 225 of the mother and her son (checked-in earlier than Mrs. Jones) Bread for dinner by Luke and Claire in the dining reception of the inn

Room 216 owned by Luke Pendulum Necklace of Mrs. Jones Towels asked by Mrs. Jones "Somebody has a case of the Mondays" printed on the mug

But the most noted in chapter two is the first appearance of the ghost(or preferably called spirit by Mrs. Jones) inside the room of Claire while sheis sleeping.

The third chapter, titled A Final Guest, is kind of inappropriate for titlefor the last chapter. It is ambiguous in a sense that to whom the final guestpertains to. Though, it may be pertained to the old man, who checks-in the3rd and the last guest (which everyone would think of as he really is the finalguest pertained by the title) but this could be denied by some critics of themovie unless the writer cleared this chapter publicly. The other one could beMadeline O'Malley herself or the spirit roaming around the inn, or Mrs. Jonesherself. Some may think this is inappropriate to claim for she stayed instarting the 1800s. However, the role of the old man is unaccountablyoutdated. He died, then he scares Claire; that's it. In the case of MadelineO'Malley, she is the main antagonist of the movie, she not just scare but shekilled. Same as with Mrs. Jones, though she is the second to the last guestchecked-in, it would be necessary to temporarily eliminate the old man andmake Mrs. Jones the final guest. She helps Claire in communicating with thespirit and above all, she is the one who sees Claire's destiny to death.

Some points in reviewing the movie contextually and intertextually:

Room 353 of the old man Ironic comeback of the old man to the same room where he and his wife

have their honeymoon celebration Room 353 is the room featured on one of the inn's website videos which

shows the banging of its door by itself. 2nd appearance of the spirit on Room 353 Dead body of the old man in his bathtub with his own blood Cracked crystal of the pendulum 3rd and Final appearance of the spirit at the basement

An up-close image of the spirit of Madeline O'Malley

wherein she scares Claire at the basement. The main point

    why Claire died.

The epilogue reveals that Claire died in the basement. There is no actualproof how she died or how she is killed, but it could be some sort of samenessin the death of the old man, which is also unclear--but at least, it helps toconnect. It also shows Mrs. Jones inside Claire's room standing before thewindow during the make-up of the police in the inn. Luke and Mrs. Jones gowith the police for further questioning, and the inn was left alone with nohuman life inside, except for the living of the dead people. (by daveyfc16)
