It was a very busy August for GRV and the sport, both on and off the track. One of the month’s highlights was the Victorian Greyhound Awards, held on 18

August at the Sandown Greyhound Racing Club. I congratulate all the winners and recipients on their achievements, particularly our new Hall of Fame inductees Jan Wilson, Barry Smith and El Grand Senor. You can read more about them in this edition of the Greyhound Monthly in a thorough review of a wonderful night.

It was followed the next week by the 2017 UBET National Championships in Brisbane, the Cranbourne Classic and the Waterloo Cup in a very action-packed three days.

There was some strong Victorian representation at the Nationals as Fanta Bale became the fourth consecutive Victorian greyhound to win the National Distance Championship just one week after being crowned the Victorian Greyhound of the Year. Meanwhile Zara’s Entity turned in a great run to win the Cranbourne Classic.

And for the first time ever, GRV and the National Coursing Association of Victoria teamed up to livestream the Waterloo Cup on GRV’s Facebook page, with more than 600 people online watching Better Than This win a second consecutive Waterloo Cup as it happened. GRV is evaluating the outcomes of this new approach to covering this prestigious event and hope to repeat it next year as another way to help raise the profile of coursing in Victoria.

The 2017 TAB Great Chase Community Day program also kicked off on 2 August at Warrnambool Greyhound Racing Club and will culminate in the TAB Great Chase Final at The Meadows in October. GRV is proud to be part of this very worthwhile initiative which has raised more than half a million dollars for local community groups since 2003. To top off an action-packed month, Bendigo Greyhound Racing Association hosted a GAP Adoption Day on 27 August, where 20 greyhounds found their new homes.

Another welcome outcome during August was the Victorian Government's announcement of a $263,000 grant for Glenview Park, which is shared by Traralgon Greyhound Racing Club and Latrobe Valley Racing Club. The funding will go towards a new outdoor entertainment space with a children’s playground, shade sails, lawn area and new seating, further strengthening the Traralgon club as a local community hub.

Last month also saw the close of the public consultation period for the draft Code of Practice for the Keeping of Racing Greyhounds. It is understood that the Department of Economic Development, Jobs, Transport and Resources received more than 1200 submissions and it has been important that the industry’s participants have been active in making submissions. The next step is for the department to evaluate those submissions.

I would like to thank the clubs for their work with participants in providing submissions and other feedback on the Code, as well as on the proposed new planning guidelines which were released by the Victorian Government last month.

These new guidelines will deliver a state-wide approach to planning permits for greyhound facilities that will provide more certainty and confidence for industry investment.

On the subject of industry consultation, there has been some important feedback on the proposed new prizemoney and breeding incentive arrangements. We will now consider the feedback, and will develop revised options so we can consult on a broader range of proposed changes.

GRV is in the process of setting up new Racing and Breeding reference groups to strengthen participant input into these and other related issues. These groups will complement the work of the Industry Consultative Group and I will be announcing more details in the near future.

We are always looking for ways we can sustain and develop greyhound racing and I was very interested on a recent trip to New Zealand to observe the finish on lure in operation.

There were learnings from the trip for Victoria in relation to the operation of the finish on lure and we are discussing these matters with a number of Victorian greyhound racing clubs.

Coming up this month, we can look forward to the Healesville Cup on 10 September, an event which always offers a great family day out, followed by the official reopening of the new Horsham track on 12 September after a $1.2 million upgrade and I look forward to seeing as many of you as possible at both events.

Public submissions on the draft Code of Practice for the Keeping of Racing Greyhounds closed on Monday, 14 August with more than 1200 submissions received

over the 60 day public comment period. The Victorian Government will now carefully consider the submissions and respond to key issues raised in them including making any necessary changes to the draft Code. Industry and welfare concerns have been heard, and the draft Code will be revised upon thorough consideration of the submissions and further consultation with stakeholders. In revising the draft Code, the purpose remains to ensure animal welfare is prioritised throughout the lifecycle of a racing greyhound, while achieving workable outcomes for participants in the racing industry.

Greyhound racing contributes $409 million to the Victorian economy and supports almost 2900 jobs. The Victorian Government is committed to ensuring animal welfare is a top priority so this industry can continue to thrive into the future.

Once finalised, the new Code will replace the existing Code of Practice for the Operation of Greyhound Establishments, which Victoria’s Chief Veterinary Officer Dr Charles Milne said needed to be reformed in his 2015 report on the Victorian greyhound industry.

Over the past two years, the Government has worked closely with the greyhound industry and Greyhound Racing Victoria to

FANTA DOES IT AGAINBy Andrew Copley

Fanta Bale (pictured) captured a sixth Group 1 event by taking out the National Distance Championship in Brisbane on 25 August.

Exactly one week after being announced, the 2016/17 Victorian Greyhound of the Year, the Robert Britton-trained Fanta Bale opened up a big lead from box one before holding on to defeat fellow Victorian, Burn One Down and Queensland’s Big Easy Red.

Earlier in the night, it was the home state that took the honours in the Group 1 National Sprint Championship, with Jury (Tony Brett) defeating South Australia’s On Fire and Victoria's Aston Dee Bee.

Fanta Bale is only the second greyhound in Australia to achieve six Group 1 wins, two fewer than Fernando Bale, who won eight. She stretched her career record to 28 wins from 44 starts,

The Victorian Government has introduced new rules to streamline planning approval processes for new or expanding greyhound facilities. The changes provide more certainty for greyhound facility owners and operators, so they know what can and can’t be built.

New rules will govern the scale of racing dog facilities, ensure appropriate setbacks from boundaries and neighbouring dwellings, require gates that prevent the escape of racing dogs and ensure landscaping is used to preserve views from nearby properties. If these requirements are met, small facilities will not need planning permits and medium-sized facilities will be able to avoid a protracted advertising period.

The new provisions follow an extensive consultation process with local community groups, industry experts and local governments. The Government will closely monitor local councils to ensure the new provisions are being properly applied.

improve animal welfare standards within the industry. Adoption numbers are at record high levels, euthanasia numbers are down and the number of pups whelped has dropped significantly.

The Code aims to address early management and training practices to improve the number of dogs making it to the track, and provides a pathway for greyhounds to be retired and re-homed as pets at the end of their racing career.

Minister for Agriculture, The Hon. Jaala Pulford, said all submissions would be thoroughly reviewed.

“It is pleasing to see so many Victorians having their say on the draft Code. Every submission will be carefully considered as part of this important reform process,” Ms Pulford said. “Animal welfare matters to all Victorians and it’s an absolute priority for the Andrews' Labor Government.”

Minister for Racing, The Hon. Martin Pakula said the final Code would be a crucial plank for the future of Victorian greyhound racing.

“Greyhound racing in Victoria employs thousands of people and delivers significant economic benefits to the community. We won’t be making any changes that threaten the viability of the industry. The Government is committed to developing a final Code which ensures greyhound racing continues to be a sustainable and strong industry, with improved animal welfare outcomes.”

with the $75,000 winner’s cheque taking her prize money earnings to just under $894,000.

“It’s like winning the trifecta,” Britton said, referring to Fanta Bale’s three Group 1 wins over the long distance, which includes the Sandown Cup and the Gold Cup in Brisbane.

The Nationals is greyhound racing’s ultimate state versus state challenge, with Victorian representatives now winning the past four Distance titles with Sweet It Is (2014), Lady Toy (2015), Ring The Bell (2016) and Fanta Bale (2017).

Better Than This has defied all odds to achieve coursing greatness and win consecutive Waterloo Cups at Longwood on 27 August for

co-trainers Ashlee Terry and Andrew Paraskevas.Exactly 100 years since a greyhound named Brown Hawk collected the double by consecutively winning the 1916 and 1917 Waterloo Cups, Better Than This put his name in the history books once again by defeating Night Attack (Leigh Howard) by three lengths.

To win the Waterloo Cup, greyhounds must course one-on-one six times in the space of two days without defeat in what is greyhound racing’s ultimate test of speed and stamina. It also requires training excellence with regard to preparing and managing your greyhound.

One of 50 entries in the 2017 Waterloo Cup (up from 36 in 2016), Better Than This also joins a small handful of greyhounds to have won the race twice (2016-17), while GRV Hall of Fame inductee, Byamee is the only greyhound to have won it three times (1953-55).

On a day that coincided with a greyhound adoption day in Bendigo, it’s incredible to think that little over 12 months ago Better Than This was headed for that very path. The son of Knocka Norris and Father Of Mine was booked into the Greyhound Adoption Program before a last-minute decision to try him at coursing, and now he is a bona fide champion courser.

“Coursing is such a great avenue for greyhounds and if it

wasn’t for coursing this dog wouldn’t be racing at all. He simply wouldn’t perform very well behind a mechanical lure, so we decided to try and course him at Lang Lang last year because they use a drag lure there, and he turned into a completely different dog when we raced him there,” Ashlee said.

With this year’s Waterloo Cup being at Longwood, where a mechanical lure is used, Ashlee was in two minds about allowing her star try to defend his title.

“We weren’t going to enter him this year because it’s a mechanical lure here at Longwood and he hasn’t won on a rail track in his life. But I really need to thank the Longwood Coursing Club because they allowed us to trial him here a few weeks ago behind a drag lure. We felt we needed to do that because we needed him to simulate the conditions at Longwood with the conditions at Lang Lang, and it worked,” she said.

Co-trainer Andrew Paraskevas said he was overwhelmed with the support he and Ashlee had received across the two days.

“It has felt like people have come out of the trees to help us all weekend. It is extremely humbling that everyone in coursing is willing to go out of their way to help each other, and I can’t thank you all enough,” he said.

Better Than This, who was bred and is owned by the Sparkle And Fade Syndicate, collected a first prize of $12,970, while Night Attack earned the runner-up cheque of $3,875.

This was the 144th running of the Waterloo Cup, which concludes Victoria’s 2017 coursing season. The final, which was proudly sponsored by the Cranbourne Greyhound Racing Club, was streamed live on GRV’s Facebook Page, in a first for Greyhound Racing Victoria and the National Coursing Association.

GREYHOUND OF THE YEAR

FANTA BALE

By Andrew Copley

Fanta Bale was awarded the Victorian Greyhound of the Year at the 2016/17 Victorian Greyhound Awards on 18 August following a sensational

season of racing that included a phenomenal five Group 1 victories.Trained at Lara by Robert Britton, Fanta Bale is unrivalled in terms of success at the very top level when it comes to versatility. She is the only greyhound to win at Group 1 level as a sprinter, middle-distance and staying performer, having won the Hume Cup (600m), Rookie Rebel (600m), Australian Cup (525m), Sandown Cup (715m) and the Gold Cup (710m) during the 2016/17 racing year.

First awarded in 1973 to the immortal Lizrene, the Victorian Greyhound of the Year is considered the highest accolade a current racing greyhound can receive in this state.

“I don’t think she is the best sprinter in the land or the best stayer in the land, she is just a damn good dog with an enormous will to win,” Britton said. “Fanta Bale has a unique story. She is a daughter of a female greyhound I bought in America called UCME Typhoon, and I bought her in the auctions over there. UCME Typhoon’s other owners, Sandy Mathieson and John Hutchison weren’t interested in breeding with her and neither was I, but I was talking to Paul Wheeler about her, and he was interested in breeding with her and we went from there.”

As well as the Victorian Greyhound of the Year, Fanta Bale was also announced the Victorian Stayer of the Year, while Striker Light was named the Victorian Sprinter of the Year. All three awards relate to racing between 1 July 2016 to 30 June 2017, and are voted on by the Victorian Greyhound of the Year Panel and revealed via a secret ballot.

RACING GREYHOUND

By Andrew Copley

Few greyhounds have captured the attention of Victorians like El Grand Senor in 2010/11. His dominance was such that he was considered

virtually unbeatable. And it all started from the moment his breeder, owner & trainer Carolyn Jones first took him to a racetrack. “The first time Carolyn put him in a box she rang me up and said ‘I think they’ve clocked the lure…she said he couldn’t go that quick,” recalled Carolyn’s mentor, Peter Giles.

El Grand Senor made his debut at 22 months of age in a 410 metre maiden race at Horsham – and by then the word was out about the talented 38 kilogram greyhound from Gippsland – as he started as red-hot $1.40 favourite when scoring by 10 lengths.

His early and mid-race speed continually blew his opposition away, and his popularity was such that he started favourite in all but one of his 43 races, from which he netted 35 wins, three at Group 1 level, and over half a million dollars in prize money.

“His best achievement was his Melbourne Cup win,” Giles said. “It was one of the few times he missed the kick, but he was still able to run a brilliant time and win by four or five lengths (6.25 lengths). He also won the Maturity Classic and the Topgun at The Meadows. He won three country cups, held three track records at different times and he won nine consecutive races twice and won 18 of his last 20 starts before being retired.”

“He was just a natural race dog. I think he had the edge on his rivals because of his brilliant early pace and his box manners. He started off over the shorter trips and there were people who suspected he may not run 500 metres, but Carolyn never had a doubt.”

“There were offers to buy him. People tried several times to coax Carolyn into selling him but he would never leave here. He was her pet.”

El Grand Senor was retired to stud after winning the 2011 Shepparton Cup, and he continues to reside at Jones’ property in the Gippsland town of Rosedale.

GRV’S ACHIEVEMENTS DURING JAN WILSON’S TIME AS CHAIRMAN (1999-2000)• Major redevelopment of Victoria’s greyhound

race clubs and facilities including the installation of state-of-the-art kennel blocks for the comfort of greyhounds at the racetrack

• New racetracks at Sale, Warrnambool and Warragul• Purchase of the Greyhound Adoption Program’s facility in

Seymour, which would later be named the Wilson-Gannon Centre in honour of Jan and the late Dr James Gannon

• Establishment of the Great Chase community series in 2003, which has contributed more than $500,000 to Victoria’s disability sector and provided a social outlet for thousands of Victorians with intellectual and physical disabilities, along with their carers

• GRV’s market share of the wagering dollar growing from 12 per cent to 17 per cent among the three racing codes

• Annual increases in prize money during the 2000s which saw the amount of money paid to greyhound racing participants grow from $11 million to $25 million

• Sky Channel coverage of nearly all greyhound races, where previously eight Victorian clubs had little or no Sky coverage.

SOME OF JAN’S OTHER NOTABLE ACHIEVEMENTS• City of Dandenong councillor, 1978-86• Represented Dandenong North in the Legislative

Assembly of the Victorian Parliament, 1985-1999• Jan Wilson Community Centre in Noble

(2017) for her advocacy to improve animal welfare practices across the State

By Andrew Copley

The late Jan Wilson has been inducted into Greyhound Racing Victoria’s Hall of Fame, in recognition of her extraordinary achievements

as an administrator of the sport, particularly her role as GRV Chairman for a decade until her sudden passing in 2010 at age 70.Prior to her involvement in greyhound racing, Jan enjoyed a long career in politics. She joined the Board of Greyhound Racing Victoria in 1998 and the following year she became Chairman. At that time, eight of the 12 Victorian provincial clubs had little or no Sky Channel coverage, while infrastructure and overall facilities were moderate.

A decade down the track with Jan as GRV Chairman and nearly all greyhound meetings had Sky Channel coverage, GRV’s market share of the wagering dollar across the three racing codes had grown from about 12 per cent to more than 17 per cent, while prizemoney had increased from $11 million to almost $25 million a year.

In addition, GRV’s overall infrastructure at its clubs was drastically improved under Jan’s leadership, with the redevelopment of a number of race tracks and facilities, and the purchase of the Greyhound Adoption Program’s property in Seymour, which has been a pillar in the program’s re-homing of more than 7,000 former racing greyhounds as pets.

Close friend Marg Long, a GRV Hall of Fame inductee and long-time greyhound racing administrator at club level, said Jan’s foresight with regard to the Greyhound Adoption Program, which saw the program move from GRV’s offices at William Street in West Melbourne to its 40 acre property in Seymour, was integral in terms of securing the long-term future of greyhound racing.

“Jan wanted to see a future for greyhound racing and a future for retired greyhounds. She fought very hard to ensure we could purchase the GAP property and progress from there,” Long said.

One of Jan’s greatest legacies was the introduction and establishment of greyhound racing’s Great Chase community series which, since its formation in 2003, has seen more than half a million dollars donated to Victoria’s disability sector.

BREEDER

BARRYSMITHBy Andrew Copley

Barry Smith is one of Victoria’s most successful all-time greyhound breeders. The man behind the ‘Mepunga’ greyhounds, Smith’s story is

legendary, having spent four decades breeding and rearing countless winners while running a dairy farm in the Western District.“My wife Andrea and I live in a small place about 22 kilometres out of Warrnambool on the Great Ocean Road and it is called Mepunga. If you blink when you go through it you’ll miss it,” Smith laughed.

“We use the Mepunga prefix so people around town can follow our greyhounds as there was a time when a few local old timers liked to back our dogs but were struggling to identify them in the form guides.”

Smith’s success could be put down to a few things, including raising his pups on an unlimited supply of fresh milk.

“They get all the milk they can drink. Being a dairy farmer, it doesn’t cost me a lot of money and they love it. But I don’t think there’s any secret to my success. You’ve got to put everything into whatever you do in life and if you get the result at the other end then that’s the thrill that you get out of it. We’ve owned about six group 1 winners and the breed has pushed out about 10. When you breed them, rear them and own them all the way it is a real big thrill,” Smith said around the time of his Hall of Fame induction in 2017.

The beneficiaries of Smith’s success include the trainers he farms his greyhounds to. He has had a long association with the Britton family that started with Allan Britton, a GRV Hall of Fame trainer, and has filtered down to Allan’s son Jeff Britton and partner Angela Langton. Langton, who has also bred and reared a number group winners, said Smith’s attention to detail is what sets him apart.

“Barry does a fantastic job with his rearing,” Langton said. “He sends his greyhounds to our place at about 16 months of age, once they’ve been broken-in and had a bit of a spell. You can always tell they’ve been fed well because they’ve got big backs on them and they’re beautiful and shiny. They’re always very outgoing, they’re not shy of anything and I think the secret to Barry and his rearing is that he spends a lot of time with them when they’re young. He gets them used to noises and makes a little lure that he has in his paddocks. They learn to drag on the lure and socialise with each other all the time, so their pups are

Another of Smith’s trainers, Joy McDowall, said he is well known for his ability to check greyhounds for injuries.

“Barry checks dogs for local trainers from his home every Sunday night, and he often checks over 50 greyhounds in the one night. People travel 30 or 40 kilometres to bring their greyhounds to him from places like Warrnambool and Koroit, and he will never accept anything in return,” the trainer from Nullawarre said.

KEN CARR MEDAL WINNER

By Andrew Copley

After humble beginnings out the back of Moonee Valley, Ron Hawkswell has gone on to become one of greyhound racing’s most familiar and

knowledgeable voices.Named in honour of the late Kenneth Russell Carr, a leading Victorian greyhound racing administrator and GRV Hall of Fame inductee, the Ken Carr Medal is considered the highest award for excellence within the Victorian greyhound racing industry.

RSN’s Hawkswell has been calling greyhound races for more than 40 years, and his voice resonates with Victorian greyhound racing perhaps more than anyone else in history. He served considerable years on the Victorian Greyhound of the Year Panel, and his tips have long appeared in form guides in the Herald Sun newspaper.

A shocked Ron Hawkswell said: “To go to work and love what you do and be paid for doing it is an absolute privilege. Ken Carr was a great administrator and I really want to donate this medal to my parents, who supported me so much in my ambition to be a race caller.”

Ron’s brother Allan Hawkswell said Ron was 13 when he got “the bug” for calling races and at 17, he wondered if there was a location behind Moonee Valley where he could hone his skills on horse racing. After sussing out the surrounds of Moonee Valley, a fantastic vantage point was discovered.

RON HAWKSWELL

“Ron and I would go to Moonee Valley in his 4-on-the-floor XY Falcon, with plenty of food and drinks and a cumbersome open reel recorder, and Ron posted himself at the western end of Hunter Street (now a children’s playground),” Allan recalled. “After each race, Ron would do at least a half a dozen replays of his call, highlighting the mistakes and occasionally berating himself – usually saying ‘I can do better than that.’ Oh yeah, because the huge recorder was plugged into the car’s cigarette lighter socket and used stacks of power, at half time the car had to be started and left running for a while to recharge the battery. That routine lasted a few years.”

Ron would drive from Melbourne to Shepparton to gain on-air experience calling Race 9 at Shepparton for a few years, before landing calling roles at Wangaratta and then Cranbourne.

“Greyhound racing has been a marvellous venture for Ron, who looked up to the late Bill Collins as a mentor. And while he has called many top sprinters, he always refers to four-time Sandown Cup winner Bold Trease as the best stayer he’s seen,” Allan said.

GRV WELFARE AWARD

NED BRYANT AWARD

THE PODMORESBy Andrew Copley

Unbeknownst to them, husband and wife, Kevin and Narelle Podmore’s heavy emphasis on animal welfare has become a shining example

for trainers to follow as Victorian greyhound racing shores up its future. Their passion for and duty to their greyhounds for their entire lives was the key reason the Podmores received the second annual GRV Welfare Award for outstanding contribution to the welfare of greyhounds.

Once their greyhounds retire from racing the family spends a long period of time socialising them to get them ready for re-homing. They have so far placed a remarkable 37 greyhounds through the Greyhound Adoption Program.

“We are very humbled to have received this award as the work that we do with greyhounds is something that we do for the love of our greyhounds and not for anything else,” Narelle said. “It is not something that you expect to receive an award for as it is just part of our everyday life. If I could, I would keep them all. If we have a litter of pups or

Greyhound trainer Robert Britton was as surprised as he was humbled when named the Ned Bryant 'Silver Fox' winner for 2017 .

Named in honour of the late Ned Bryant, who was considered the Bart Cummings of greyhound training ranks and was also one of Australia’s most respected canine chiropractors, the award goes to a person for showing outstanding achievement in the training, breeding, welfare or promotion of greyhound racing.

Britton enjoyed a remarkable 2017 racing season, winning five Group 1 events with Fanta Bale as well as the 2016 McKenna Memorial (Bruce Tycoon) and 2017 Warrnambool Cup (Leo’s Gift), both Group 2 events.

The Lara trainer also contributed plenty to the sport off the racetrack. He is joint Vice President of the Greyhound Owners Trainers & Breeders Association (GOTBA) and he regularly gives up his time to help promote and improve the sport on a broader level through regular media appearances, speaking engagements and as a key contributor at GRV’s stakeholder engagement workshops.

“This has absolutely floored me,” Britton said upon receiving the award. “Ned Bryant had no peer as a trainer and he was

purchase a greyhound it is no different to having children. It is a commitment to make sure they go through their racing life, then retire to sit on a lounge and become the couch potato they deserve to be.”

“There is nothing better than to receive an email or a photo of one of the greyhounds that we have re-homed and to hear how they are going and how they have brought enjoyment to someone’s life. I feel privileged as this happens regularly. It puts a smile on your face and makes your day.”

While the Podmores were unable to attend on the night, the award was accepted on their behalf by Ray Bartolo, a member of Greyhound Racing Victoria’s Welfare Committee.

Other finalists for the 2016/17 GRV Welfare Award were:

Pam Priestley: Has fostered 30 greyhounds for the Greyhound Adoption Program over the past seven years and is a regular volunteer at events at which GAP attends.

Ivanhoe Diamond Valley Group: An organisation that cares for the intellectually disabled which travels from Melbourne to the Greyhound Adoption Program in Seymour every Thursday to volunteer their time to assist with the maintenance and care of the greyhounds.

also a great (injury) checker.”

Of his work in greyhound racing aside from training, Britton said: “My passion on helping the broader industry dates back to 2002, when I was one of a group of trainers trying to organise permits for our dogs. A group of us got together and got someone on to our local council and we ended up getting our permits. It’s amazing what a group of people can achieve if they work together on something they believe in.”

Britton was also awarded the Metropolitan Trainer of the Year award, for training the most full stakes city winners in the 2016/17 racing year (140), while Anakie’s Andrea Dailly was announced the Provincial Trainer of the Year, preparing 336 winners on Victorian country tracks during the 12 month period.

“I had no idea we had trained that many winners,” Dailly said when told of the news.

One of the Dailly kennel’s owners David Gleeson accepted the award on behalf of the team, and he praised the Daillys for their consistency, integrity and honesty.

Now that the submissions have closed on the

Department of Economic Development, Jobs, Transport and Resources’ draft Code of Practice for the Keeping of Racing Greyhounds we cannot afford to assume that all will be OK. The politicians will make the decision on what the final Code will be,

so we all need to keep our local State MPs abreast of what is required to ensure the future of greyhound racing. The GOTBA will continue to lobby strongly to ensure the appropriate Ministers are aware of the changes that need to be made, however the more individuals that voice their concerns to their local state member, the better informed they become about our situation. The IER recent independent report on the Size and Scope of the Victorian Greyhound Industry (pictured right) will give you the information you need to back up your presentation and then tell them how the new draft code affects you and your ability to remain in the industry. The GOTBA’s submission is on our website if you would like to refresh your memory about major issues.

I urge all participants to take every opportunity to promote our sport with family, friends or our local communities. Use social media to demonstrate how we look after our dogs and advise of the regulations that ensure a whole of life responsibility for our greyhounds. It is only by informing people of the way our sport is regulated and how the industry is working together to achieve the best outcomes for our greyhounds that we will be able to create the perception that we deserve, as people whose first concern is to the welfare of our dogs.

Contrary to what some believe, greyhounds in our care are the best looked after dogs in the world. Firstly, living with their litter

News By Sandra Reed, GOTBA President

mates and playing and running and being free to enjoy life as they would do in their natural environment. Then as adults they become racing dogs and are supreme athletes with the best possible care and attention. They love to compete and they are working dogs. We give them the opportunity to be the best that they can. In retirement, they then become great pets because they have been treated so well by the greyhound racing people.

I think we need to push the fact that we get it, we know our dogs and what’s best for them, we work with them to give them the best possible life a dog could have.

We as participants have an obligation to the welfare of our dogs, which means to continue to give them the life of a working dog. As the general public doesn’t necessarily understand this, it is our job to inform them and lift the image of greyhound racing to where it belongs.

The GOTBA is very happy with the way the industry has come together over the draft Code of Practice, however we must continue to stay connected and not become complacent. We encourage you to join our association, or at least talk to us about your concerns, and we will do our best to address them.

The Greyhound Owners,Trainers and Breeders Association (GOTBA) of Victoria is a not-for-profit incorporated association, run by a committee of volunteers, who work towards the constant improvement of the sport on behalf of members and their greyhounds.

The Victorian Government has announced a $263,000 funding package for Glenview Park Racecourse in Traralgon, which is shared by the

Traralgon Greyhound Racing Club and the Latrobe Valley Racing Club (LVRC).The Member for Eastern Victoria, Harriet Shing MLC announced the funding package at Glenview Park on 14 August, and announced that a landscaped community space will be added to the venue, along with a new outdoor entertainment space, including a children’s playground, shade sails, lawn area and seating for families.

Ms Shing said the upgrade included the construction of a multi-purpose shed to enable Glenview Park to host more community-based events, and work to repair and replace damaged asphalt and construct a new drain is also in progress to ensure the club’s facilities are maintained to a high standard.

“It’s great news for the local community and great news for jobs,” Ms Shing said.

Traralgon GRC Manager, Steven Clarke said the two racing clubs were jointly contributing $50,000 towards the outdoor entertainment area, which is expected to be finished by the end of October. He said a new communal lawn area would open up the club to the broader community and would be used to host more community events, such as picnics and an open-air cinema.

“We’re grateful for the support the Victorian Government has provided for our new outdoor entertainment area, which will be a great space for community events and provide a safe place for kids to play,” Mr Clarke said.

Ms Shing said the Government funding package would also support a three-day food truck carnival with free entry from Friday, 3 November to Sunday, 5 November to mark the start of the LVRC’s racing season.

Twelve time group race finalist Blazin’ Bomber has called it a day after 60 starts for a staggering 27 wins and 18

minor placings. The son of Kinloch Brae and Absolute Stunna has banked $253,210 which was aided by victories in the Group Three Bill Collins Speed Star in 2016 and the Group Three Puppy Classic at his home track of Cranbourne.

Trained by Darren Pattinson, Blazin’ Bomber was a versatile chaser who was able to win over a multitude of distances and he is now retired to stud with Pattinson and partner Tammy Collins for an introductory fee of $1100.

Weighing in at 32 kilos with a jet-black coat, Bomber isn’t just a pretty face – he has a personality to match.

“He is just an awesome dog who enjoys a lot of attention. We decided to retire him now as it is coming towards spring and we have had a number of enquires to use him at stud,” Collins said.

Collins believes that Blazin’s Bomber’s kind nature, strength and his chasing determination will be characteristics he will throw into his offspring.

Not many greyhound owners get around faster than their dogs, however a group of V8 Supercar drivers might just have an edge

in speed over their first greyhound, promising youngster Pancake.

V8 stars Taz Douglas, Jack Perkins and James Moffat were among the faces in the crowd at Cranbourne on 9 August, when Pancake ran second in just her second ever race start, following a win on debut at Sandown Park.

“Apart from Jack, James and myself, there’s also Lee

Holdsworth, Scott McLaughlin and Ben Small in the Syndicate and it has been so exciting watching her race,” Douglas said.

“As racing car drivers we understand there are highs and lows in any form of racing, and we are just rapt that Pancake has got off to such a good start to her career and all six of us are planning to go to the races together one day soon to watch her run.”

Pancake is trained by Steven Van Oirschot, whose daughter Kayce is Douglas’ partner.

“I asked Steve a while back to keep an eye out for a greyhound that I could buy into with a few mates, and it looks like it could be a case of beginners’ luck.”

Four-and-a-half-year-old chaser Oaklands holds the lead for the most amount of starts for a greyhound currently racing in Victoria.

157 is the number of starts he has had (up until August 28) and to answer your question, yes, he is still competitive, finishing second in a Veterans race at Healesville on August 11 and recording a win at Shepparton over the 390 metres just seven days prior.

Oaklands has amassed more than $40,000 in prize money from 24 wins and 56 minor placings for owner and trainer Gary Edwards. The January 2013 son of Oaks Road and Lil’ Bit Cool

has also contributed to an estimated $12,000 in starters fees.

“He is a very sound dog who just loves to race,” Edwards said. “I think his ability to race for so many starts is in his build, as he isn’t an overly tall or long dog but he is stocky.”

Edwards has found that when the dogs get older they can still run similar times but when they get checked it takes them a little longer to regain momentum.

“I have been racing him at Healesville a bit more recently because there is less strain on him. It is great to have the option to race on a straight track, especially for older dogs,” he said.

While Oaklands is still going strong, Edwards’ retirement plan for his ageing racer is lazing in his backyard in Broadford.

One man who would have been overlooking Longwood from up above on Waterloo Cup day was the late Stan Cleghorn (pictured left), who sadly passed away last month at age 98.

Cleghorn, a legend of the Melton Greyhound Racing Club, worked tirelessly for many years promoting greyhound coursing through various media outlets.

Victorian greyhound racing’s 2003 Ken Carr Medallist, Cleghorn would have been delighted that the Waterloo Cup final was streamed live through GRV Facebook, with more than 600 viewers watching the race as it happened and more than 2,200 people having viewed the replay in the ensuing 24 hours.

Michael Bewley had plenty of reasons to celebrate after his first starter, Chaddy Whacker, won

following the trainer’s 17-year absence from greyhound racing.

During his break from training greyhounds, Bewley kept an eye on a few dogs by watching races at a local TAB while he lived the inner-city life as a chef with his wife, Debbie. But chasing a change of scenery and a little bit more room to move, Bewley purchased a three-acre property west of Melbourne in Pentland Hills with the dream of racing greyhounds again.

On Tuesday, August 8 at Geelong, Chaddy Whacker, who is informally known as Harry, provided the thrill Bewley had been missing by breaking his maiden status from box two.

“It is still such a buzz to be back training and to record a win first up is even better,” Bewley said.

‘WHACKER’ OF A WIN AFTER 17 YEARS

By Andrew Copley

With the Victorian Government’s draft Code of Practice for the Keeping of Racing Greyhounds dominating industry discussion over the past

couple of months, it was at the top of the agenda at the most recent Industry Consultative Group meeting on July 27.

ICG Chair Judith Bornstein kicked off proceedings by reminding all members that the live baiting matters in 2015 and subsequent Milne and Perna reports were the key drivers behind both the draft Code of Practice by DEDJTR and development of a Welfare Strategy by GRV.

The identified factors that allowed live baiting to occur have heavily influenced the drafting of the Code and the welfare strategy. It was also noted that Dr Milne has indicated he will review the progress of actions to implement his recommendations, which were accepted by government and the Board.

Greyhound Racing Victoria’s $3.1 million prize money proposal was another topic heavily discussed at the meeting. Having received the proposal in the days leading up to the meeting - and before it had been distributed publicly - ICG members expressed feedback individually, face-to-face with key GRV

ICG MEMBERS HAVE THEIR SAY ON PROPOSALS

WHAT IS THE ICG?In 2016, the Board of Greyhound Racing Victoria appointed an Industry Consultative Group (ICG), with members having appropriate experience and diversity across a number of areas. The ICG meets every six weeks to discuss major issues facing the industry, out of which suggestions are forwarded to GRV’s Board for consideration.

The ICG panel comprises of Judith Bornstein (Chair), Dr Barbara Backhoy, Deborah Churchill, Steven Clarke, Tracey Corneille, Peter Craig, Sheldon Hamilton, Brian Jones, Marg Long, Nicole Lund, Daniel Nugent, Sandra Reed and Tom Welsh.

representatives. There was significant discussion and debate over how the new arrangement might look as well as breeding incentive arrangements. GRV will consider all proposals and suggestions before implementing the new arrangement later this calendar year.

The ICG discussed a draft Welfare Strategy for GRV, with the consensus being that it could be further simplified. General feedback in the room was to make the Strategy more simple and with a higher level of generality that would have synergies with the Department of Economic Development, Jobs, Transport and Resources’ (DEDJTR) Code of Practice for the Keeping of Racing Greyhounds, once that Code is finalised.

As submissions were still open at the time of the meeting (submissions closed on 14 August), this was a major item for discussion. There was an understanding among ICG members that work on the draft Code began approximately 18 months before it was released for public consultation – prior to Victorian greyhound racing undertaking major reform – and therefore many of the proposed rules were already being adhered to.

This month’s meeting of the ICG will address the key breeding issues facing Victorian greyhound racing such as stimulating numbers, blood lines and problems associated with pink card, DNA and delays. The issue of syndication was also raised as a topic for future discussion.

Racing Association Manager, Troy Harley, who reared Chaddy Whacker, Bewley felt he was well prepared to get back to what he has always loved doing – racing greyhounds.

With a kennel of five at his newly established property, Bewley relies on the help of his wife Debbie while he continues to work full-time in the city.

Harry is kennelled alongside his rearing partner Shaker Breaker, who is by Spud Regis out of Destiny Shaker.

“We originally purchased Shaker Breaker as a pup and needed a rearing partner so we bought Harry,” Bewley said. “Shaker Breaker is about eight

lengths quicker but she is pretty injury prone but she shouldn’t be too far off having her first start.”

Bewley is also a very keen breeder and has purchased Gazer Bale, who is a litter sister to the great Fernando Bale. In December, Gazer Bale had her first litter of puppies to leading sire Barcia Bale, with Bewley already receiving good reports from the rearers.

Re-homing of all greyhounds is a key goal for GRV. To assist owners with re-homing their greyhounds, GRV made some changes in October 2016 to the GAP pre-entry assessment testing booking process, which is working very well:

• Spaces in the pre-entry assessment sessions are now booked through Member Services during office hours on 03 83291100 or by emailing [email protected]

• All sessions for September - November 2017 are listed on this page, with later dates released each month.

• To be eligible for a pre-entry assessment your greyhound must:

• have a current C5 vaccination; and

• not have been trained, trialled or raced for at least one month (preferably two months) prior to the testing day (“wind-down period”). This will increase the likelihood of your greyhound passing the temperament test. A new ‘Racing to Retirement’ information booklet is available through Member Services or at:

greyhoundcare.grv.org.au/retirement-from-racing.

• Only three greyhounds per connection can be booked in each pre-entry assessment session.

• Participants must provide a good quality, well fitted wire muzzle when entering a greyhound into GAP.

Greyhound trainer Joy McDowall has placed a number of greyhounds into the Greyhound Adoption Program this year, and there are a

couple of things she does that helps ensure they pass their pre-entry assessment and are accepted into the program. At Joy’s property in Nullawarre in the Western District, she always takes time to handle, pat and cuddle the dogs under her care.

“I always give them a cuddle when I put them away in the kennel. If I don’t, they’ll stand there waiting until I do. Some people say you shouldn’t treat them as pets, but if you get a dog that hasn’t been handled it’s very hard to get their confidence,” she said.

Joy and her husband Ashley currently have 10 dogs – pre-trainers and racing – in their kennels, plus three pet dogs. When dogs are ready to retire from the track Joy moves them away from the training kennels to her backyard alongside her three pets so they get used to a new life that doesn’t involve racing.

The hands-on approach works for them on the track, as well as off the track. Joy and Ashley might not have any group winners to their name, but they have had their fair share of competitive chasers.

“To name a few, Mepunga Anna won the GOTBA Cup at Sandown, Fantasy Diamond won the Ron Nester Memorial Final at The Meadows, Mepunga Melachi won eight races in Melbourne and Mepunga Tyler is still racing – no group wins to his name yet but he has been more than handy,” she said.

Joy’s affection for greyhounds began more than 45 years ago when Ashley bought his first greyhound just before they got married. After four decades, she can still be surprised occasionally by her dogs.

She could hardly believe her eyes when she saw a photo of the re-homed ´Slug´ (named because that’s what he looked like when he was born) at his new home sharing his food bowl with a cat.

“I never thought I would see that.”

FROM RACETRACK TO THE COUCH

Twenty greyhounds sauntered off to new homes when an Adoption Day was held in

Bendigo for the first time on 27 August.

About 150 people turned up to meet 22 dogs at the Bendigo Greyhound Racing Association. The day drew people from Bendigo and further afield – some travelled from Frankston, Geelong, Werribee and Shepparton.

Danny Ralph and his wife Sharon didn’t tell their children Molly and James where

they were going when they left home in Mooroopna, just that they were driving to Bendigo, where they spotted Jake.

“We had no intention of taking one home, we just came for a look,” Danny said. “He found us, we didn’t find him – he kept following me and I thought ok, I don’t think we’ll be leaving without him.”

The family is no stranger to greyhounds – Danny’s uncle Stan Ralph is a successful trainer in Tooradin. In fact, the day before the Adoption Day, Danny had a $55 win when he put a small bet on his uncle’s dog, Shanlyn Pippin, so it was a lucky weekend as far as dogs were concerned.

Kevin Eyles is investing heavily in the sport of greyhound racing, as he has bred 40 pups that he is currently rearing and educating at

his property in Murchison.“We have to think positive and anyone who can look forward positively would see it is a good time to be breeding,” Eyles said. “I have never bred this number of pups at the same time before and I am sure they will keep me busy for a fair few years.”

I'VE LEARNT FROM MY MISTAKES: EYLES

“From four months of age I spend time educating them in a bullring and running up my straight track at home chasing a drag lure.”

The Horsham Greyhound Racing Club has been back in full operation for several weeks, with the official opening of its upgraded racetrack

to take place on Tuesday, 12 September. The 43-year-old racetrack was closed for redevelopment last October, as GRV joined forces with Sydney’s University of Technology to develop a design with optimum emphasis on animal welfare and safety.

The transition to the upgraded track has gone smoothly. Key elements include widening the track, increasing the camber on bends to improve transition and reduce crowding,

resurfacing the track and introducing drop on boxes at 410m start. The ageing and degraded electrical and irrigation systems were also replaced and extra light towers added.

The club will also host its annual TAB Great Chase Community Day on the same day, supporting the local disability sector, making it an even more special celebration. Read more about TAB Great Chase Community Days at grv.org.au/events/the-great-chase

Kevin Eyles, with Group 1 Bold Trease

finalist Kraken Flash, understands

the importance of handling his

greyhound pups every day.

Eyles says that after “learning from mistakes” he has worked out how to maximise his chances of breeding and rearing winners.

“I’ve bred a few litters over the years and I made some mistakes early on, but I’m always learning and have had a lot more success in recent times. I’ve now bred quite a few city winners including Kraken Flash, who was a Group 1 finalist, Kraken Lass, who won at The Meadows and Sandown, and Kraken Soupy, who won the Matchmaker at Shepparton.”

Eyles said the key to turning around his breeding fortunes came with sourcing expert advice on the selection of sires and by putting more time into educating and interacting with his pups.

“I never used to handle my pups much at all, but I’ve learned over the years that you should handle them every day,” he said. “It’s impossible to handle them when they are in a group, so at 4-5 months of age I like to house in groups of two in their runs, and that way I can handle them a lot easier. From four months of age I spend time educating them in a bullring and running up my straight track at home chasing a drag lure.”

“It’s a lot of work and, to be honest, if you don’t have money behind you to give them the best nutrition and you’re not a naturally motivated person who is willing to put time into your pups then you’re wasting your time.”

ROBERT BRITTON’S DIET FOR GREYHOUNDS

By Chris Riviere & Andrew Copley

Recently crowned Victorian Metropolitan Trainer of the Year, Robert Britton says there’s no such thing as “feeding better” by paying

more for your greyhound’s food.

The Lara trainer insists that the key is to source inexpensive products which provide a balanced diet which, at the same time, eliminates the risk of returning a positive swab which often comes from contaminated knackery meat.

“The basic diet we feed our race dogs costs between $2.00 and $2.50 per day, per dog, depending on whether you can buy in bulk,” Britton said.

Daily preparation of fresh vegetable soup is the most time-consuming aspect of Britton’s feeding regime, and he believes selecting the right dry food (kibble) is important.

“I believe it’s important to look to a balanced diet rather than getting caught up in brand names or advertising. Don’t fall for every new supplement launched onto the market thinking it will improve your dog’s performance,” he said.

Britton feeds his greyhounds their main meal of the day in the mornings, while giving them a light snack at night.

“I find that feeding in the mornings (9:00 to 9:30am) ensures the dogs settle and rest much better than when they are fed at night. Things are different on race days, however, as I feed them a quarter of their main meal in the morning and the rest when they get home from the track,” he said.

He said he feeds his greyhound pups, brood matrons and pet greyhounds exactly the same as he feeds his race dogs.

Main meal (fed 9:00-9:30am):

+ Approximately 350g (males) / 250g (females) of fresh minced Chicken from the butcher.

+ Approximately 350g (males) / 250g (females) of 'first class' Kangaroo.

+ One cup of a Premium complete dry food (kibble).

+ Two slices of brown bread.

+ Two cups of fresh vegetable soup.+ One egg every second day.

Supplements (included in main meal):

+ Approximately 4mL of an oil blend (e.g. fish oil, vegetable oil).

+ Liquid potassium supplement that also includes magnesium and zinc.

+ Calcium supplement (1 level teaspoon).

+ Vitamin / Mineral supplement as per label recommendation. Beware of high cobalt, vitamin B12 and arsenic levels.

Nightly snack• Dog biscuit or bread roll. Beware of poppy seeds (morphine).

On race days• One quarter of main meal fed in the morning and

the remainder when they return home from racing.

GRV would like to remind participants of the requirements to register females for breeding.

For a female to be eligible to breed, participants must ensure their greyhound has DNA results registered with Greyhounds Australasia. Steps how to do this are as follows:

1. Contact GA and apply for a DNA kit

2. Take the kit and the greyhound to your vet

3. Vet will complete the sample and post to the lab

4. After processing, the lab will inform GA and DNA number will be attached to the greyhound’s record via FastTrack

5. If all other requirements have been met (see right for PINK CARD registration) the greyhound will be ready to complete the registration.

GRV recommends applying for your DNA kit as early as possible to allow sufficient time for DNA results to be returned to Greyhounds Australasia and recorded before the greyhound is in season.

The turnaround of the DNA result can be somewhere between two and six weeks, dependent on the Lab.

For more information please contact Greyhounds Australasia at [email protected] or 9548 3500.

To find out more about registering for a Pink Card, including fees, exemptions, stud masters and FSI

technician responsibilities, go to: grv.org.au/pinkcard

Greyhound Racing Victoria has received substantial feedback on the proposed $3.1M prize money and breeding incentives package, submissions for

which closed on 31 August, 2017.All sectors of the industry have been invited to provide formal feedback via email through an article placed on GRV’s website, FastTrack and in the Greyhound Monthly. Direct consultation has also taken place with the Greyhound Owners, Trainers & Breeders Association (GOTBA), the Industry Consultative Group (ICG), Clubs and a number of individual trainers, owners and breeders.

While feedback has been supportive of the additional

money being proposed, opinions on how the money would best be distributed has been mixed. Among the more common threads of feedback were:

• There is not enough in the package for owners and breeders

• The Starters’ Fees proposal provides all the benefits to the trainers and nothing for owners

• There is no need to differentiate Starters' Fees between metro ($120) and country ($80)

• The Starters Fees’ will only benefit trainers with larger kennels and multiple dogs

• The breeders’ incentives are welcomed, but are insufficient to incentivise and revitalise the sector

• Paying breeders bonuses from first to last place is not supported – a preference of first to third would encourage quality breeding

GRV is now considering all feedback received, and is currently developing a revised set of options for utilising the approved $3.1M budgeted increase for further consideration and consultation. GRV plans to finalise and implement the increase before the end of 2017.
