The Importance of Assessment

Seminar Aims
By the end of this seminar through discussion & practice you will be able to:
– Re - articulate the importance of assessment and how it impacts on teaching and learning
– describe different methods, purposes and audiences for assessment
– identify four key features of planning for successful formative assessment
– apply principles to your own practice.

Planning for formative assessment: prompts for you
The students have been learning how to use paragraphs
to show a change in topic.
The teacher has explained the independent task.
The teacher has modelled and explained how to find
the square root of any given positive number.
The class are beginning a new science topic on
animal survival.

When?
Begin with a short review of previous learning

Applying principles to practice
Now consider your teaching episode, prepare a
specific/formative assessment question to use at a key point.
Success criteria
Follow the steps:
• What will you need to know?
• When/at what point or points in the lesson will you need to
assess, for example prior knowledge, understanding?
• How/what strategies/TLACs could you use to gather the
information?
• Plan a specific question.
