The United States per capita personal income was $54,446, up 4.9 percent from 2017. Per capita personal income is defined as the annual total personal income of resi- dents divided by the residential popula- tion as of July 1. Personal income is de- rived by summing the net earnings, rental income, personal dividend/interest in- come, and transfer payments by place of residence. Personal income excludes fed- eral income tax deductions and other per- sonal taxes and is reported in current dol- lars. In simpler terms, it is the total in- come on the front page of your 1040 tax form. This data can be influenced by large growth (or decline) in population, natural disasters (i.e., flooding or hurricanes), commuting populations (those that pri- marily work in other counties), and state and local taxes. In 2018, the Tennessee counties with the highest per capita personal income were Williamson County ($94,872), Davidson County ($66,060), Fayette County ($55,364), Hamilton County ($51,743), Knox County ($49,738), Shelby County ($49,465), Wilson County ($49,092), Sumner County ($48,656), and Loudon County ($48,491). These nine counties are the only ones with per capita income greater than the state average. Four of these counties are in the Nashville MSA. In 2017, only Williamson, Davidson, and Fayette counties have per capita income greater than the United States average. In 2010, the counties with the highest per capita income were (in order): Williamson, Davidson, Fayette, Shelby, Hamilton, Montgomery, Knox, and Trousdale. The counties with the lowest per capita income were Lake County ($23,230), Bledsoe County ($26,281), Hancock Coun- ty ($27,042), Wayne County ($28,962), Lauderdale County ($29,187), Morgan County ($29,380), Hardeman County ($29,430), Scott County ($29,758), and Trousdale County ($30,090). In 2010, the ranking (from the bottom) was Lake Coun- ty, Bledsoe County, Hancock County, Lauderdale County, Hickman County, Un- ion County, Wayne County, and Lewis County. In 2018, Tennessee had a population of 6,770,010, up 423,905 from the 2010 Cen- sus. This is a growth rate of 6.7 percent since 2010. The counties with the greatest population are: Shelby County (935,764), Davidson County (692,587), Knox County (465,289), Hamilton County (364,286), Rutherford County (324,890), Williamson County (231,729), Montgomery County (205,950), and Sumner County (187,149). From 2017 to 2018, the population in Shelby County decreased by 209. Since 2017, there were increases in Rutherford County (8,213), Montgomery County (5,935), and William- son County (5,809). These three counties increased 19,957 or 32.6 percent of the entire state’s population increase. The counties with the least population are: Pickett County (5,082), Van Buren County (5,765), Moore County (6,411), Hancock County (6,549), and Lake County (7,411). There were 16 counties that had a popula- tion decline over the 2017 to 2018 time period. The largest decreases were in Lauderdale County (down 283), Haywood County (down 261), Shelby County (down 209), Hardeman County (down 181), and McNairy County (down 157). The largest one-year percent-population growth was in Montgomery County and Wilson County (both up 3.0 percent) followed by Ruther- ford County and Williamson County (both up 2.6 percent). The data from all the nonfarm employment estimates tables include all full- and part-time nonfarm wage and salary employ-ees who worked during or received pay for any part of the pay period that includes the 12th of the month. This is a count of jobs by place of work. Agricultural workers, proprietors, self-employed persons, workers in private households, and unpaid family workers are excluded. These numbers may not add due

Total nonfarm employment decreased by 152,700 jobs from June 2019 to June 2020. There were decreases in leisure & hospi-tality (down 54,600 jobs), which includes decreases of 31,000 jobs in food services & drinking places; manufacturing (down 38,500 jobs), which includes decreases of 29,500 jobs in transportation equipment manufacturing; professional & business services (down 30,300 jobs), which in-cludes decreases of 28,400 jobs in admin-istrative/support/waste management; educational & health services (down 9,300 jobs), which includes decreases of 7,600 jobs in health care & social assistance; other services (down 8,800 jobs); whole-sale trade (down 7,000 jobs), which in-cludes decreases of 3,700 jobs in mer-chant wholesalers, nondurable goods. These decreases were partially offset by increases in local government educational services (up 10,900 jobs); general mer-chandise stores (up 5,700 jobs); construc-tion of buildings (up 2,000 jobs). During the past month, nonfarm employ-ment increased by 88,900 jobs. There were increases in leisure & hospitality (up 46,000 jobs), which includes increases of 28,900 jobs in food services & drinking places; retail trade (up 11,400 jobs); health care & social assistance (up 9,900 jobs); administrative/support/waste manage-ment (up 9,000 jobs). These increases were partially offset by decreases in government (down 10,900 jobs), which includes decreases of 8,500 jobs in local government educational ser-vices; wholesale trade (down 1,700 jobs). Tennessee's seasonally adjusted estimated unemployment rate for June 2020 was 9.7 percent, down from the revised May 2020 rate of 11.0 percent. The United States unemployment rate for June 2020 was 11.1 percent, down from the revised May 2020 rate of 13.3 percent. In June 2019, the U.S. seasonally adjusted rate was 3.7 per-cent while the state rate was 3.4 percent. The not seasonally adjusted unemploy-ment rate decreased in 74 counties, in-creased in 17 counties, and remained the same in 4 counties. Williamson County had the lowest rate at 6.7 percent, down from the revised May rate of 7.1 percent. The highest rate was Shelby County at 13.2 percent, up from the revised unemploy-ment rate of 11.4 percent in May.

Estimated Nonfarm Employment (in thousands)

Total nonfarm employment in the Nashville MSA increased by 33,300 jobs from May 2020 to June 2020. There were increases in leisure & hospitality (up 12,200 jobs); professional and business services (up 6,900 jobs); health care and social assistance (up 6,200 jobs); adminis-trative/support/waste management and other services (both up 4,800 jobs); retail trade (up 4,500 jobs); transportation/warehousing/utilities (up 2,700 jobs). These increases were partially offset by de-creases in wholesale trade (down 3,300 jobs); local government (down 3,000 jobs). During the past 12 months, nonfarm employ-ment decreased by 66,400 jobs. During that time, goods-producing jobs decreased by 18,100 jobs, while service-providing decreased by 48,300 jobs.
