Vann M. Matthews II served on the Board of the

Foundation from 2015 to 2019. Mr. Matthews was an integral part

of the Foundation, working diligently on the Grants Committee to determine

how to best award funds from the Foundation to nonprofits. He was a delight to be around and

one of the strongest and most courageous people, bravely facing ALS the last couple of years. Mr. Matthews passed away July of 2020, but will

continue to be remembered for the humor and light he shared with those around him. The Foundation feels fortunate

to have known him and worked with him over the last several

years.

IMPACT. In the field of philanthropy, it is defined as “…to have a marked effect or influence.”

We set it as a goal. We align our efforts to gain it. We study it. We chart it. Ultimately, we want our efforts to have that “marked influence” in making our community better.

We are proud to report, that with your help, the Community Foundation has had significant impact on multiple community needs during 2019. Through your generosity, your Foundation continues to make a meaningful difference. Thank you for your partnership in making our community a better place to live for all.

As you begin your review of this annual report, we would like to point out a few highlights of 2019:

• Total Grants from the Foundation exceeded $8.6 million. • Total Gifts to the Foundation were $5.7 million.• Total Investment Return on assets exceeded $13 million.• We established 19 new funds during 2019.• Scholarships from the Foundation provided college funds

for 118 students.• During the Unrestricted Community Grant Cycle, the Board approved recommendations from the Grant Committee totaling

$672,733 to twenty-eight nonprofit agencies and Foundation initiatives. • The Community Foundation RUN event established a new benchmark with funds raised exceeding $1.4 million. This

brings the total raised since inception to over $22 million for local nonprofits.• In 2019 we increased our impact on Gaston County’s future generations by welcoming the largest class of TCGC students in

history, representing 11 schools in our area.• The Next Generation hosted two successful events, engaging over 200 people in opportunities to connect with the Foundation.• During 2019 we were awarded accreditation with National Standards for U.S. Community Foundations. A designation in which

your foundation’s policies, procedures, and practices are reviewed by peers and lawyers to ensure they meet the legal and best/most effective practices of community foundations.

We understand that giving is personal. It is a vision that represents each donor’s beliefs, imagination, and aspirations on how to make this community better. From the Board and the Staff of the Foundation, thank you for sharing your impactful vision and generosity. Please accept our grateful appreciation for your support, trust and confidence over the past four decades.

FEATURED DONOR STORY

Nearly 3 years ago Nazrul and Tammy Chowdhury experienced a parent’s worst nightmare when their son’s life was cut short by an accidental opioid overdose. Their son Austin (pictured right), just weeks removed from receiving his master’s degree from UNC Chapel Hill and a burning desire to make the world a better place, was gone. Instead of being weighed down by this tragedy, the Chowdhurys have honored their son’s memory by doing the thing Austin always encouraged them to do; get involved.

During the months following Austin’s death, Nazrul and Tammy became involved with the Gaston Controlled Substance Coalition by attending meetings, speaking at coalition events, sharing their story through a family support group, and supporting Narcan distribution and harm reduction training throughout the County. Since then, they have bravely shared their story in the community.

When the Chowdhurys joined the Coalition, Bill Gross, Program Manager for the Coalition, encouraged the Chowdhurys to partner with the Community Foundation by establishing a Fund. Gross had previously worked with the Foundation and knew the Chowdhurys impact could be expanded through this relationship. The Chowdhurys met with the Foundation and established Austin’s Opioid Education Fund. They can contribute from their Fund to nonprofits serving opioid related causes and other nonprofits they feel Austin would have been passionate to serve. “Since Gaston Community Foundation is involved with all the non-profits in Gaston County to make a difference, it was the right organization for us to be involved with,” stated Nazrul Chowdhury.

As the relationship between the Foundation and Chowdhurys has strengthened, the Chowdhurys were awarded the Linda Slade Volunteer Service Award through the Community Foundation Run in 2019. This award represents the Chowdhurys devotion of time, talent and energy to making the Run successful. Also in 2019, the Chowdhurys established a library at the Dream Center Academy to keep Austin’s name alive. It was Austin’s love for reading which inspired the library. Many of Austin’s books are on the shelves for others to enjoy along with Austin’s diplomas which are proudly displayed.

Austin was not only the motivation of the Chowdhury’s journey to give back, but he has remained present in all their work throughout Gaston County. “Everything we are doing is to bring awareness to avoid unnecessary deaths. We lost Austin because we didn’t know how opioids change our brain. We don’t want another family to go through this horrible pain. Today we know addiction is a chronic brain disease, not a moral failing. We feel awareness and education can make a huge difference in any community.”

For Nazrul and Tammy, there is great purpose and thought behind Austin’s Opioid Education Fund. The Chowdhury’s giving is amplified by their passion to ensure that no family experiences the same loss they did and their wish to honor their son’s memory through philanthropy. Their purpose is their son, and Austin is woven thoughtfully into every gift of time or treasure that the Chowdhurys generously grant back to our community.

Impact Through Individuals Collectively GivingThe Next Generation Fund of the Gaston Community Foundation hosted two successful events during 2019; Libations on the Lake in the home of Michelle and Mark Kinsley and a Fall Frolic in the home of Janet and Ron Sytz. The Next Gen also participated in the fundraising portion of the Community Foundation Run and Are You Smarter Than a Gaston County 5th Grader. The Next Gen Fund is a giving circle that allows donors to pool resources and make collective grants to add greater impact to their gift. Because of our members, Next Gen is continuing to make a difference in Gaston County. The Next Gen Fund has granted over 183,000 back into Gaston County over the last 19 years, all while growing the fund to over $294,000. The Next Gen Fund provided grants to many nonprofits serving youth, hosted events to collect donations for the organizations and provided fun events for members to gather.

Influential ImpactThe Gaston Community Foundation held its 30th Annual Allen H. Sims Dinner on Thursday, September 19th, 2019. Donors from across the County joined together for the celebration hosted by the Board of Directors of the Gaston Community Foundation.

The dinner was held at Gaston Country Club where over 200 donors and guests gathered to hear a report on the Foundation and to honor the newest recipients of the Allen Sims Award. Dr. Benjamin Hinton, Pastor of Tabernacle Baptist Church and Board Member of the Foundation, provided the invocation. Following the invocation and dinner, Tim Efird, Board Chair, reported on the Foundation’s many numbers of impact for our community.

During Mr. Efird’s report, two videos served as testimonials to the partnership the Foundation provides to donors.

The first video shared the story of the Mary Armstrong Coffey Scholarship. The scholarship was established in February of 2019 to award one scholarship per year to a graduating student of Forestview High School. The scholarship was created by Mandy and Wade Coffey, in memory of their daughter Mary Armstrong, who would have graduated in the Spring of 2019 from Forestview. “Establishing the scholarship at The Community Foundation was simple and flawless. From the first time we met with Elizabeth and Ernest through the online application review process, it was great. We have complete trust that we are very well taken care now and in the future,” stated Wade Coffey in the featured video.

The second video featured new Legacy Society members of the Foundation, Amy and Marsh Spencer. Mr. Spencer states in the video, “We decided we needed a way to ensure some of our estate plans would solely benefit this community. Following further discussion with our estate planners and the Community Foundation, we decided to open a Legacy Fund for the sole benefit of Gaston County. It was a very simple process to include the Foundation in our will and we

are glad to have our trust in the Foundation’s determination of the greatest needs for years to come.” Both videos may be found on the Foundation’s website, www.cfgaston.org.

Following the report on the Foundation, Mrs. Pamela K. Warlick presented the Allen H. Sims Award to Mr. Wayne F. Shovelin and Mrs. Julia M. Shovelin.

Many have had the opportunity to see firsthand the Shovelins’ enthusiasm and support of Gaston County. Through Julie’s role as the Board Attorney for Gaston County Schools and Wayne’s career as CEO of Gaston Memorial Hospital, now CaroMont. Prior to their careers, Julie attended Wake Forest University for her undergraduate degree, as well as, her law degree in graduate school. Wayne attended the University of Minnesota for both his undergraduate and graduate degrees. Once entering their careers, Julie and Wayne saw a need in the community and found many solutions resulting in the betterment of our County. They each cared for the community and made many differences as strong leaders in industry and in philanthropy.

Outside of Julie’s significant position in our school system, she has served on a plethora of nonprofit boards and as president of six of those boards, including; Hospice, Girl Scouts, Salvation Army, the Literacy Council, Glenn Foundation and the Community Foundation. Julie’s honors are vast, but to highlight a few; she served as President of the Education Section of the NC Bar Association; she received the Gaston Chamber’s Athena Award, and she is a Paul Harris Fellow.

Wayne has also dedicated his time to much more than his career. To name some of his most meaningful work, he has served our Country in the US Air Force, he has served on the Board for the Gaston Chamber, the board of Daniel Stowe Botanical Garden, the board of the Community Foundation and on the board for the National Whitewater Center. Among his many honors, Wayne has received The Gaston Gazette’s Man of the Year award, the Gaston Chamber’s Spirit of the Carolinas, the Distinguished Service Award from the North Carolina Healthcare Association, he is a Paul Harris Fellow and he has received the Order of the Long Leaf Pine.

Mrs. Warlick stated during her presentation of the award, “In 2009, Wayne retired as CEO from CaroMont. My family and especially my father, Duke Kimbrell thought very highly of Wayne and his nearly three decades spent growing CaroMont. My father approached Wayne and asked how he could best honor Wayne’s career. Wayne’s response was simple, but yet held so much meaning. He asked that a scholarship be created to help graduating high school seniors pursuing healthcare. The scholarship was named the Wayne F. Shovelin Scholarship and was established to award $20,000 annually for four years to any four-year college or university, thus providing an $80,000 scholarship to students. The award also includes three paid summer internships tailored to the student’s interest. Wayne considered the future of our community when he decided how to leave a legacy.”

Mr. Gene Matthews stated, “Wayne and Julia have not only given their treasure and time, but they have been the architects of so many important civic endeavors that have strengthened and grown the fabric of our community.”

To conclude the evening, two videos were presented for congratulatory remarks by Dr. Jeffrey Booker, Gaston County Schools Superintendent and by Mr. Chris Peek, CEO of CaroMont Health.

The Community Foundation now adds the Allen H. Sims Award to this distinguished list of honors for the Shovelins. Mr. and Mrs. Shovelin have exemplified the character of the Sims Award: the selfless act of seeing a need and finding a solution, of caring for a community and making a difference.

2019 SCHOLARSHIP RECIPIENTS

Fulfilling Educational DreamsDuring the Fall of 2019, 118 students fulfilled their educational dreams and the dreams of their parents, thanks, in part, to the donors of the Gaston Community Foundation. The Community Foundation has over 32 scholarship funds established by donors who are committed to education. Many scholarships are named in the memory or honor of a loved one that valued education. Students are evaluated by an advisory committee of board members and community volunteers based on a written application, test scores, transcripts and interviews. Individual scholarships range in amounts from $500 to $5,000 per year.

“While the amounts for scholarships vary, each scholarship serves a purpose and that purpose is to further an educational path for students showing great potential,” said Ernest Sumner, President of the Gaston Community Foundation. “Foundation donors have the opportunity to assist these families in achieving further education. Whether a scholarship provides a book or the entire sum of the education, it makes a difference in the lives of our Gaston County students.”

Scholarships fulfill a large part of the Foundation’s mission by continuing education and the betterment of our community. The Gaston Community Foundation is your foundation, your future. Running with a PurposeRun day is an annual celebration of philanthropy in our community and although the 2019 event itself had to be canceled due to rain there was still SO much to celebrate at the Community Foundation Run wrap up breakfast. The 2019 Community Foundation Run raised $1,437,037 in support of nonprofits in Gaston County. Participating nonprofits received a 37% match.

From February 1st through April 22nd, 148 nonprofits worked diligently to raise funds through the run – funds that will support their bold missions to feed the hungry, support the elderly, teach kids to read, build affordable housing, enrich our lives through the arts, and to ensure needs in are community are being met. There were 20 steering committee members that met monthly since the beginning of the year to plan the event. More than 200 volunteers were ready on the day of the run, rain or shine, to help make sure the event went smoothly. Law enforcement, EMS, and the Fire Department coordinated for months to make sure event attendees were kept safe. And despite the event itself being canceled, every dollar donated to participating nonprofits not only remains in our community but it also multiplies via the Foundation's match program.

Since inception, the Community Foundation Run has raised more than $21,853,355 to support nonprofits serving Gaston County, so we celebrate being a part of a community that comes together to support each other and knows the value of giving back.

During 2019, your Investment Committee worked diligently with our advisors, Alex. Brown to continue the diversified approach of our portfolio in maintaining a conservative position, yet allowing significant fund growth with market gains. This position has yielded a 2019 year end performance of +16.5% in our main investment pool. After review with our advisors, we feel the portfolio is well positioned to mitigate risk and take advantage of the coming year. Your investment committee will continue to closely monitor our portfolio, paying close attention to allocation, quality of investments, and diversification.

Thank you to generous donors that understand the impact of purposeful giving, enabling the Foundation to exceede $110 million dollars in grants to the non-profit arena since inception. Because of this generosity we are able to celebrate the following highlights from 2019:
