The anticipation for Ice Dragon grows in our hearts, though this years beast seems most difficult to make depart. We see the Hael as a group continue to make great strides in it's preperations, and many members opening their dwellings to host much learning (and fun). We missed Three Ravens, but Baron Eliza-beth with the scribes, Tiercelin continuing her great Haelstorm and Wolfgang & Katerines

adventures in beverages. We have seen the number of fighters attending practice grow due to a Roman influence and this seems to have stimulated the fencer's who seem to turn out in greater numbers. Thank you all for

participating. Have Fun! Prepare for the Dragon!

    WORDS FROM

    OUR BARON

    AND BARONESS

  • ALL PAY HEED TO THE WORDS OF THE SENESCHAL

    Rhiannon Elandris

The Barony of the Rhydderich Hael is a living organization. We exist as a body of people working together harmoniously, more or less, toward common goals. We have rules to help move things along and make sure everybody is treated fairly. We have goals to encourage each other to do better and more. What we do is complex and difficult to explain, and each person's interest and involvement is different from the next. In order to keep the Dream alive we must rely on some measure of immigration from the mundane realms around us. Everywhere you look there are people who share some similar interests. Looking at our own number you can easily realize how di-verse such people can be. Part of our task is to find these souls and let them know what we are about, to share with them our love of living history. Every fresh face is a new dawn for the Hael. I encourage you all to consider those you know and ask yourself if any would be interested in joining us. Maybe they want to learn how to fight. Maybe they want to learn the ancient and currently oft depre-cated arts of calligraphy. Maybe they want to learn how to brew, or work with fibers, pigments, wood, or steel. Maybe they want to study history, learn old languages, or try on another's customs for size. And that, as we all know, is just the tip of the spear. So please, look to the world around you and ask yourself if there are any lost souls waiting to be swept up in the tides of the Dream. Is ait an mac an saol.

  • Lady Katryna Robyn--A Rememberance I first met my love and bride to be at a Barony meeting in May 1989. She was up in the balcony of St.

Gerard's Lyceum, one hand bandaged from a burn, but doing needlepoint. We chatted for a bit, and met

again at the rainy Baronial Champs at Brushwood that June... and chatted for 3-and-a-half hours about all

sorts of things, including her working at West Valley Nuclear. I'd become hooked.

In those days, when it came to raffles for "baskets of Earthly Delights," she would be be the person to

beat for those... She also won a raffle for a helmet crafted by Baron Bedawyr and presented said helmet

back to His Excellency to give to a pomising new fighter. That fighter turned out to by Aquila d'Athos,

    [now Baron of Thescorre].

Over the next year, we became good friends and travelled to a few events together, most notably

    AEthelmearc Coronet III in Stormsport.

I came to learn of her tutleage under Lady Gabielle d'Auvergne in the art of storytelling, and she did wield

a bow and arrow in those early days of our friendship.

She hand-crafted site tokens for Ice Dragon XVI in her father's wood shop and, with Lady Emelyne

O'Toole of Redwater, was an Assistant Autocrat for Ice Dragon XVII [the "Make-A-Wish" Ice Dragon] in

    1993.

She received her Award of Arms at Masked Ball that December.

She continued to develop her long-standing interests in herbs into her beloved herbal vinegars, and began

to inspire me into the culinary arts [where I developed my efforts with fruit-flavored sikanjabins].

She also contiued to work with her "kittens," who she introduced to the Society and directed them to

others who could help them develop in the Society's ways. After all, such was the task of a "Mommy Kat."

As our friendship continued to flourish, and be tested by others, often we would go off on an adventure

after her most-recent break-up [you guys know who you were...], as she introduced me to other of her

    favorite art forms, especially photography.

We finally courted one another in the Summer and Fall of 2000, and became engaged just before Masked

Ball that year, where she presented her "Amesthyst Lady" tale at the Kingdom Bardic Championship, and

    made it to the finals.

She was by my side as I sat vigil at Ice Dragon 2001, and got the "Peerage-Widow's Talk."

After we got married in July 2002, she continued to inspire me with her gift for knowing how much of

this herb or that spice to add to a dish to bring out its hidden qualities, as well as how to truly appreciate

    wine.

We also entertained in the early years of our marriage, especially our "Night Before Ice Dragon" dinners.

As her back and knees continued to deteriorate and her migraines also took their toll, she became more

known for her merchant space- "Kat's Kaverns" where she sold her vinegars, and was THE sales

representative for Cynwyl's wonderful bone-work, as well as sold her hand-crafted jewelry- Especially at Ice

Dragon and Harvest Raid, which were her favorite events.

She was my muse... My inspiration... My true love... I will miss her, as shall her cats- Shyla, Andre,

Jyun-Jyun, and TyGrr [as she plays in Paradise with her beloved Jocko, Pushka ("Pip"), Hunyor, and

Zelle, when not enjoying her father's woodshop up there]...

It is my plan to slowly, but surely, build the garden she wanted to do.

It is also our plan to have a "Shrine" with a book of remeberance at Ice Dragon, and several other events,

and a more complete celebration of her life at Harvest Raid.

    Sincerely,

Maestro Brian of Leichester, proud to have been her love and spouse for 10-and-a-half years

Salon So, what is a Salon you may ask? Ice Dragon salons are a small reserved area where you and your friends, household or whatever can set up a public reception to show off your superior sense of style, taste and hospitality. The salons will only be on the second floor of the armory and will be located around the balcony. Each reserved salon will be a roughly 8'x8' space and comes with a ta-ble and two chairs. (Sorry but we cannot accommodate requests beyond that so if you need more you will have to bring them.) This is a competition; a hand picked team of judges will decide which salon is the most worthy.

The cost of a Salon is $25. This should be sent to the reservations clerk and must accompany an early registration for a specific per-son and will be linked to that name. There are a limited number of salon spaces, so register early. We will attempt to honor any specific location or pairing requests but we cannot guarantee exact locations.

You are encouraged to bring decorations, banners, table settings and the like; be mindful of any possible damage to the hall. Free-standing poles, small sheet walls etc. are acceptable. You may NOT engage in construction projects requiring power tools, bring in large open flames or otherwise block the normal flow of traffic. Remember that while the site is damp, anyone found serving alco-hol to those under 21 or publicly intoxicated will be asked to leave immediately.

Ice Dragon Pent Coordinator Website Greetings to all Good Gentles from the 2013 Ice Dragon Pentathlon Coordinator,

The Ice Dragon passes this season on March 30, 2013, so it is not too early to start thinking about your Pentathlon entries!

The Pent website will be up by the second week in December, but in the meantime, I wanted to get out some preliminary infor-mation.

    1. The categories will not be changing, with the exception of clarifying the accessories category (i.e. veils and cloth gloves go in the

textile sub-category, not the non-textile sub-category). The Applied Research category, introduced last year, will remain, although we are going to encourage participants

to submit the paper portion of that entry early (optional).

    2. We want to once again see entries from throughout the Known World, and are going to market the event and the Pent to en-courage that. We are going to allow shipped entries, with certain stipulations (more about this later). We have always allowed

other people to bring entries for friends, so do not let the fact that you cannot attend keep you from entering the Pent. And remember, you do not have to enter the Pentathlon (with five entries) to enter the competition - a single

    entry is just fine!

    3. The deadline for Literary Arts is February 15. That category includes: LITERARY ARTS

Lit1: Research Paper Lit2: Musical Arrangement & Composition

Lit3: Poetry & Prose Written Entries

Entries in Literary Arts must be received electronically or postmarked by February 15, with no exceptions. If I do not contact you within 24 hours of your emailing your entry, contact me. Also, please let me know in advance if you are sending a hard copy entry so that I can watch for it. I can accept electronic entries in Word, InDesign, Publisher, any kind of photo format, or as a pdf. Word

    or pdfs are preferred.

Send electronic copies to: carnabyservices (at) yahoo (dot) com. Hard copies get sent to:

    kids activities.

    CHANCELLER MINOR

    CORDELIA COLTON

On the 13th of February the Hael held our monthly "mini" rapier tournament. The

theme for this month, in honor of the 443th anniversary of the Massacre of

Novgorod, was a Highlander Duel. There could only be one!

We had six combatants who showed up to fight for the Quickening. Each fencer

was immortal, except for the head and neck. If your head comes away from your

neck, it's over. At the end of a round robin, it came down to a three-way tie: my-

self, Don Behrend von Elmendorf and Lady Katryn Stracke. A second round robin

was held to who would earn the Prize. Katryn and Behrend each killed me, then

Behrend took Katryn's head and won the Quickening.... And a package of dark

    chocolate peanutbutter cups.

Join us on March 13th, 2013 for another "interesting" rapier tourney to celebrate

the 551st anniversary of the first printing of the Gutenberg bible.

    Lady Maeve

Greetings, I'd like to thank Alicia for her work as A&S Minister. Enjoy your retirement :)

Even though Ice Dragon will be here soon, it's not too late to make something to enter into the A&S competition! You don't have to enter the Pent, single entries

are perfectly fine so don't let that scare you. If you have questions, Mistress

Tiercelin has created a website with Pent Category & Rubric information. You can also email her with your questions. Also, if you are interested in seeing how the winners are decided, there is a Judges Shadowing program being organized by

Mistress Elisabeth. Finally, later this spring there will be an A&S Day. I'm hoping that we can have

hands-on classes, space for scribal & sewing, and even martial classes. If you are interested in teaching something, please let me know.

Vote! Carried Vote for Baronial Champs Bid

Isabetta has put forth a bid for Baronial Champs.

If possible we would like to vote on it.

Vote! Carried Formation of the Baronial Policy Change Committee.

Call for volunteers. Will arrange a meeting time so we can hack through various and sundry changes to the policies and get them updated in short order.

    Here's the plan:

We will go through the current Baronial Policies document piece by piece to compare it to the proposed Baronial Policy Pro-posal.

Each of these pieces will be treated atomically and voted upon as such at the next business meeting.

Minutes from the committee meetings and section change documentation will be made available prior to the next baronial busi-ness meeting.

After each vote a new version of the current policies will be published for the populace and will become the then official Baronial Policy document.

Proposed date for the first meeting is February 19th.

Will look into both private and public locations. Main thing necessary is a place to meet where we can talk, drink coffee, and generally not be a nuisance.

First subject to be tackled will be barony great office descriptions.
