What is an IB Education?

“The International Baccalaureate Organization aims to develop inquiring, knowledgeable and caring young people who help to create a better and more peaceful world through intercultural understanding and respect.”

Why IB?What is it?

- The IB programme allows students to develop a skill set for university success over a two year period at a time when they are at home, with parents/guardians who still support them, with smaller classes and a dedicated team of teachers to help and support them. This is quite different to a student who moves away from home to attend university, is paying for courses and is enrolled in classes that are often larger with less individual attention.

Is it harder?

Expectations are higher. Some material is more rigorous. Assessments test at a higher level of understanding. In short, it prepares students for the reality and rigors of university

What is the IB Diploma?

The International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Program is a challenging two-year high school curriculum offered in high schools around the world.

It leads to a qualification for acceptance, credit and scholarships that is widely recognized by the world’s leading universities.

IB Diploma students take courses in six areas in grades 11 and 12.

What are we looking for in a Pre-IB/IB Student?

Pre-IB

What do we do in Pre-IB Courses to Prepare for Success?Think about a ramp or a staircase as a metaphor for Pre-IB (we are transitioning from Junior High and building skills needed for later)We offer Pre-IB courses in the following:

- English- Math- Science

To apply to Pre-IB, an application form must be completed and a piece of sample writing must be provided at Colonel Gray High School’s library on April 21 or 23 at 3:20 (one hour maximum)Note: Students can apply to the grade 10 pre-IB school in which they are zoned for grade 10. If the student is out of zone, they need to complete an out of zone transfer with the PSB and their current school. The PSB will determine the status of the transfer and the placement of the student.

Solution

IB courses are graded on a scale of 1– 7.A grade of 1 is less than 50% and is not acceptable in IB or in the provincial world.

�7 is 96%-100%�6 is 90%-95%�5 is 80%-89%�4 is 70%-79%�3 is 60% - 69%�2 is 50% - 59%◦A student will earn an IB Diploma with an overall score of 24. We convert “IB” grades to “provincial” grades where applicable.

If you know now that you are going to go in IB and you NEED your physics: you will not need CEO or Phys Ed 401 to graduate so you could potentially take Physics 521 in the second semester of grade ten. You can also go through the Nova Scotia Community College Correspondence Course or the Virtual High School in Ontario to get your physics credit.

The DP Model - The Core

CAS(CreativityActivityService)

CAS is another place for experiential learning. You don’t study CAS, you do CAS. You have a chance to challenge yourself in a completely different way. Many IB graduates will tell you that their CAS experiences provided some of the most memorable moments in their IB journey. Why?Because they had a chance to make a difference - locally, nationally or internationally, and they challenged themselves in new ways.

The EE (extended essay)• The extended essay is compulsory for all students taking the Diploma Programme and is an

option for course students.• A student must achieve a D grade or higher to be awarded the Diploma.• The extended essay is externally assessed and, in combination with the grade for theory of

knowledge, contributes up to three points to the total score for the IB Diploma.• The extended essay is a piece of independent research on a topic chosen by the student in

consultation with a supervisor in the school.• It is presented as a formal piece of sustained academic writing containing no more than

4,000 words accompanied by a reflection form of no more than 500 words.• The extended essay process helps prepare students for success at university and in other

pathways beyond the Diploma Programme.
