It was the winningest unlimited hydroplane in history driven by the greatest driver of all time. Bill Muncey’s famous Atlas Van Lines nicknamed the “Blue Blaster” won 24 races from 1977 to 1981 including three Gold Cups and two National Championships. Designed by Jim Lucero, it was considered the most innovative and space-age race boat of its time. Built from lightweight honeycomb aluminum, the Rolls Merlin powered boat was light on its feet and could out-corner every hydroplane it competed against. But the “Blaster” was also fragile and could be a handful to control. But Bill Muncey had the experience and masterful driving skills, and along with crew chief Jim Lucero, kept the boat winning for five seasons. Tragically Bill Muncey was killed in October 1981 when the Atlas blew over while leading the final heat of the World Championship in Acapulco Mexico. Following the accident the wrecked Atlas sat in the back of the shop while the team carried on with a new hull for Muncey’s self-appointed successor Chip Hanauer. In 1983, the Smithsonian requested to have the boat repaired and brought to Washington DC to be exhibited. In Seattle, the crew went to work on the broken hull and in a short period of time, performed a “cosmetic” restoration on the boat including a new paint job. The gleaming Atlas once again looked like a cham- pion, as it set off on the cross-country trip to its new home in the nation’s capital. In 1987, the "Blue Blaster" came back to the Northwest and was donated to the new Unlimited Hydroplane Hall of Fame and Museum later to become today’s Hydroplane and Raceboat Museum. The boat was used for static displays and parades but spent several of the next 23 years in storage. As the boat contin- ued to deteriorate, the museum and its volunteers made the commitment to restore the Atlas to its 1979 configuration, its pinnacle season. The long debate by museum members and fans to whether the boat should ever run again was finally resolved. The Muncey family were joined by former Atlas crew members who all said that Bill Muncey would not have had it any other way. He would love to know it ran again and would have considered it an honor. All agreed it would be a fitting tribute to Bill…. to let thousands of fans witness the Blue Blaster roaring across the water once more.
