Vitamin D levels decrease during the winter months, as sunlight triggers Vitamin D production. Vitamin D is obtained from skin exposure to sunlight as well as from certain foods (fatty fish and eggs) and supplements.

For most adults, Vitamin D deficiency is not an issue. However, research is finding that this may not be the case for those with chronic health problems. A recent study in the American Society for Clinical Pathology found that women with certain health problems, such osteoporosis, high blood pressure, arthritis, cancer, and hypothyroidism see a more significant decrease in Vitamin D during the winter. The authors suggest that women with these health conditions need to be much more proactive and consult their physicians regarding the best supplements to take to ensure they have adequate levels of Vitamin D.

Vitamin D helps with strong bones, blood pressure regulation and cardiovascular health. If you are concerned about your Vitamin D levels, talk to your doctor about your diet and whether a vitamin supplement might benefit you.
