Kirk Dooley was born and raised in University Park. He grad-uated from Highland Park High School in 1973 and was honored as an HPHS Distinguished Alum in 2007. He studied Journalism at Texas Tech and screenwriting at San Francisco State Univer-sity. While at Texas Tech, he was sports editor for the school newspaper and won the Wick Fowler Scholarship, awarded to the top college newspaper writer in Texas.
He served as managing editor of the Park Cities News in 1980. Then in 1981, he created Park Cities People and was its founding editor.
He also created the Texas Taxi Limousine Service (white Cadillac convertibles with steer horns on the front), the Texas Trivia board game (more than $1 million in retail sales in its first six months), the Las Colinas Weekly, the Homesick Texan and the Texas National News.
He has overseen all the Dallas Mavericks publications for twelve years and, with his wife Charlotte, has published Scots Illustrated (the HP sports programs) and all the HP team sports posters for the past twenty years. He published Randy Allen’s
book, Coaching by The Book, in 2006, and has written the text for the HPISD Centennial book, which will be published in 2014.
He has written seven books in the past 25 years, including The Von Erich Family Album and Read My Lips (with a forward by George W. Bush). Currently, he is working on two books, The History of Mexican Food in Texas and The History of Highland Park Football. He also writes a weekly column in the Dallas Morning News about life in the Park Cities.
He is editor and publisher of Creede Magazine, a quarterly, four-color magazine based in Creede, Colorado.
In addition to writing and publishing, he is the Director of Youth Ministry at Christ the King Catholic Church and is the Scoutmaster for Boy Scout Troop 35. He has been the game an-nouncer of the HP Lady Scots basketball team for the past three years.
He and his wife Charlotte have two children, Maggie (18) and Kellis (14).
He was named Grand Marshall of the Park Cities Fourth of July Parade for 2013 by the Rotary Club of the Park Cities.
Yaroslava Ichnatenko was ten days old when doctors operated to correct a congenital defect. Her mother remembers the early days after her daughter was born in a different hospital: “We were told there that our child was dying and that is it.” Only after she took Yaroslava to the cardiac center did she feel a bit of hope for her daughter’s life. Yaroslava, who celebrated her ninth birthday this year, is one of the facility’s many success stories.

at a children’s hospital in Sydney.When Dr. Yemets returned to Kyiv, he establish-
ed the first neonatal cardiac surgery department in Ukraine. The department got off to a humble start, housed as part of the Amosov National Institute of Cardiovascular Surgery, with equipment donated by Rotarians in Australia, among others. “I am pleased to say that many children were saved on that sec-ondhand equipment,” Yemets says.
In 1992 the Kyiv Rotary Club was chartered and took on Dr. Yemets’s cause as its first service pro-ject. Dr. Yemets pursued further training abroad in
a visit from Australian Rotarians led by PDG Jack Olsson. They had stopped in Kyiv on a trip to develop exchanges in non-Rotary countries and learned of the need to train surgeons specializing in pediatric heart conditions. In 1991, Olsson arranged for Dr. Yemets to train
Australia, Canada and France. He be-came chief of pediatric cardiac surgery at the Amosov Institute. In 2000, doc-tors performed 244 surgeries. By 2010, the number had increased to 1,231. The average age of a patient with heart dis-ease who needs surgery is one year old.

PP Bill Sleeper reported on the recipients of the RCPC Club Awards, which were announ-ced at the Installation Celebra-tion. He said that he was particu-larly pleased that PP Charles

ced our speaker today, Chris Westfall, author of The NEW Elevator Pitch. He said that there are more ways to communicate now, with “likes” and tweets and
other social media, but that ac-tual communication is difficult. He believes that eighty percent of all business issues are com-munication issues. It is impor-tant to find a way to cut through the noise. He said the “eleva-tor pitch” was first defined in the Golden Era of Hollywood; screenwriters would see a mo-vie producer on an elevator, and would try to sell them on the idea of their screenplay be-fore the elevator door opened. However, to-day your message must cut through all the chatter of social media. The ability to commu-nicate concisely and to elicit trust is crucial. The most important question to answer is “So what?” Anything of value involves other peo-ple, and it has to get others involved. The most important person in the Elevator Pitch is the other person; the speaker must turn the mirror around. You must change your story to stay modern and compelling in this age. You must envision the life you want to create and how to create it, and then, you must tell that story to yourself and to others. It must be a story, but it must also be about taking action. The New Elevator Pitch is 118 seconds long, which is the average length of time of an ele-vator ride in New York City skyscrapers. The first eight seconds should be used to get the attention of the listener, which leaves 110 seconds to tell a compelling story.
