Locals turned out in numbers despite the

showery weather for the annual Bellshill Street Fair event last weekend. The event, which is organised by the Bellshill Community Council took place over the bank holiday weekend was officially opened this year

by newly elected Central Scotland MSP, Richard Lyle.Spanning the whole weekend, the community council arranged activities for everyone to keep the community spirit alive that included stalls selling homemade goods and baking and an array of

fairground attractions provided by M&D Leisure - operators of Scotland’s Theme Park at Strathclyde Park - in conjunction with the Showman’s Guild. This year the stalls were, in the main taken by local charities and various community groups looking to

raise much-needed funds for their organisations.Talking to The HUB Community Council Secretary Duncan McLeod said; “Despite the showery weather, the event was a great success again this year.”He continued; “I believe that the stalls had roaring trade

and it was good to see so many take the opportunity to come and be involved at the Street Fair.”“I would like to thank everyone who helped and the members of the community council for making this event happen.”

Hello again and let me welcome to your latest

issue of Lanarkshire’s favourite positive newspaper, The HUB.

It is hard to believe that The HUB is two years old! It really does only feel like we started it all yesterday; time certainly does pass very quickly when you are having fun! Ok, those on the ball will notice that we are only at issue 45 – so how can we be two years old?

The truth is, the business started shortly before the first ever publication was published. We started doing all of the hard work before we even printed issue 1.

I would personally like to thank all of the help, support and assistance that we have had from the community during the

past two years, and I firmly believe that without that support, we may not be in the position that we are today.

When you consider that as an industry, the media/newsprint sector has pretty much had a tough old time of it. So for us to actually be growing and moving forward says a lot especially when you look at the other publications closing down local offices, suffering vast advertising revenue declines and forcing redundancies at all levels.

Is the traditional model broken? In my view, when you look at the evidence, you certainly have a case for that statement. However, we could argue all day with certain people that it is in fact not broken. I guess

you will have your own opinion on that, but for us, here at The HUB we have a very clear plan of the way forward.

We believe that every community should have its own HUB newspaper delivering the best of the positive and good news from within. Perhaps, for us, the most important aspect of The HUB is doing it all free! Allowing everyone the opportunity to keep informed of what is going on.

Our business plan for the future focuses around delivering a HUB into communities across the UK. We will also be on the lookout for acquisition projects as in the current state, it is my belief that some the ’big players’ will

look to offload some of their less profitable titles, reducing their net debt.

We will of course, keep you posted on our developments as they unfold.

As always, we do like to hear from you, so please do keep in touch and keep us informed about any event that you are hosting, or about someone in your community that has gone that extra mile.

Until next time, thank you for your continued support.

A Lanarkshire woman has been selected as a regional

winner in the Scottish ‘Curvette of the Year’ competition. The UK-wide competition organised by the women’s only gym is in its third year and aims to recognise the achievements of Curves members across the UK in achieving a healthier, more positive lifestyle.Beverly Miller from Wishaw, who joined Curves just over 2 years ago, has worked tirelessly to shape up and get fit, resulting in a complete image transformation. The 51-year-old, who attends Curves in Wishaw, has not only dropped six dress sizes and lost over 6 stone, but has also seen a significant improvement to her lifestyle. When she joined, Beverly was fast approaching 50. Fed up with her appearance and back pain Beverly decided she needed to take action and joined her local Curves gym.

She was determined to change from being ‘fat at 40 to fit at 50’, so she began working out five times a week and has currently surpassed her target weight loss. Now she feels fantastic and relishes being able to wear size 10 jeans!Curves has already helped millions of women worldwide, many of whom are going to the gym for the first time in their lives, and now has just under 60 clubs across Scotland. Ann Stigwood of Curves in Wishaw, said: “This is a fantastic achievement for Beverly and we are very proud that Curves has helped her to improve her overall quality of life in so many ways. “She was selected from hundreds of Curves members across Scotland and is a real example to those who want to make positive changes to their lifestyle. Everyone at the Wishaw club wishes Beverly the very best of luck in the next stage of

the competition.” Beverly was just pipped at the post for the title of Scottish Curvette of the Year, by Curves Paisley member, Kerry Roberts. Kerry, as Scottish Curvette of the Year 2011 will join finalists from across the UK for an exclusive make-over and photo shoot in London with Chat Magazine, before going on to compete for the overall UK Curvette of the Year title. The UK Curvette of the Year will win a luxury 5* all-inclusive holiday for two people worth £3,000, courtesy of Icelolly.com and £250 worth of Next vouchers and a personal styling session. Gill Brady, international marketing manager for Curves, said: “Curvette of the Year allows us to recognise the women who have not only achieved significant weight loss, but have also changed their lives for the better. “We’ve had some exceptional

applications from some of the most motivating and inspiring women across Scotland and all our members who entered the competition should be extremely proud of themselves.” Curves is not a conventional gym- it is designed specifically for women to target all those well documented problem areas and its friendly, women-only atmosphere makes going to the gym feel less intimidating. A Curves workout lasts just 30 minutes and helps you to keep fit, get healthy, have fun and make new friends whilst shedding the pounds and inches. Its workouts combine strength training and sustained cardiovascular activity through

safe and effective hydraulic resistance, making it suit people of all ages and abilities. With thousands of locations worldwide, Curves is the world’s largest fitness franchise. Many clubs now also offer new

You can also enjoy a wander round the gardens and admire

the glasshouse exotics and all the other areas in their early summer splendour.

Councillor Helen McKenna said: “The festival offers a great day out and I would encourage everyone to come along and enjoy a fun-filled day out in the beautiful surroundings.”

FUN FOR EVERYONE AT OPEN DAY

Croftbank Care home in Uddingston hosted their annual open day recently where friends and family could join the

residents for an afternoon of fun.Despite the weather, there was a great turn out and those who

did attend enjoyed some of the offerings such as home baking, bouncy castle, raffles and other prizes.

Pictured above are some of the staff, family and friends with some of the residents.

Community Sports Hub Launched at Braidhurst High SchoolA new community sports

hub was launched in Motherwell on Wednesday 25 May.

A key part of the 2014 Commonwealth Games Legacy Plan, the development of Community Sports Hubs, aim to increase the number of people of all ages participating in sport and physical activity in local communities across Scotland.

“Hubs are about creating a more joined up approach to increasing participation in sport,” explained Christine Pollock, Executive Director of Learning and Leisure Services.

“We’ll be developing sports hubs in the area around specific sites, including school and community sports facilities, in particular where there has been a significant investment in improving facilities.”

Other hubs in North

Lanarkshire include St Andrew’s High School in Coatbridge and St Maurice’s High School, Cumbernauld.

All Hubs will:• developthelocal

sporting infrastructure • encouragesustainability• increaseaccessibility

for all people within a local community • offerarangeofsporting

activities • createamorejoined

up approach to increasing participation

The North Lanarkshire model will be around identified sites across NL. These sites will include school and community sports facilities and initially the North Lanarkshire approach will focus on school sites.

The first phase development of CSHs will allow us to further develop the use of the school sports facilities

out of school hours with a particular focus on sites with enhanced facilities, building on the progress made through the Sports Comprehensives initiative, such as the one at Braidhurst HS.• Clubsandgroupswhoare

using the sites will go through a club accreditation Scheme to ensure that they are safe and effective clubs. There will be wider benefits such as the use of the Club Room in the School as a base for clubs and a Coach Education Programme being tailored to the users of the hub.• Whereappropriate, use

of the gym will take place, such as here at St. Andrew’s and there will be classes for parents while their children are taking part in the clubs. Similarly opportunities for younger children can be offered to parents undertaking other activities on the site.• Aspartofindividual

agreements with Clubs, school sport programmes in and after school will lead into community club activity in the evenings and at weekends. A CSH will provide the vehicle for promoting local club activities and sites as a place for accessing opportunities to get involved in sport and physical activity.• Continuoustrainingand

development of a skilled and motivated delivery workforce e.g. coaches, teachers, leaders, and other volunteers who make a difference to our sport and our communities will be a priority. A successful club operating within a Community Sports Hub will be more financially sustainable, better governed, have higher membership levels across age ranges, a wider range of activities and services, and have a higher local profile for their organisation.

Councillors Alan Valentine, Annette Valentine and Paul Kelly withChristine Pollock (Executive Director of Learning and Leisure Services) and Braidhurst HT Derek Hannan along with sports workers at the launch.

The annual Arts and Crafts Exhibition to be held at Park Church in Uddingston, starts on Tuesday 7th June and will run

through until Saturday 11th June. The event, which allows talented individuals to showcase their

work in public, is set to be a roaring success if last year’s event is anything to go by.

The exhibition costs just £1.50 for entry and is open until 20:30 during the week and will close at 16:00 on the Saturday.

Community Garden Open Day

The Network is run on a no win no fee basis without hidden costs, expert witnesses can be utilised, as the case will be funded, to bolster your case and fully explain your loss and in addition the experience of the Network speeds up the process as well as helping with robust negotiations,” he commented.

The HUB took a stall this year on behalf of S2 Uddingston Grammar pupils Alice Dorran and Emma McFayden who have been working hard at raising money for their charity, Leukaemia and Lymphoma Research. At the street fair, the girls sold off some home baking and even managed to meet their local MP Tom Clarke as he did his rounds, taking time out to talk to the girls about their achievements.

On the Sunday entertainment was provided by various dance groups such as Uddingston based Carol McLean’s Dance Academy and Dance Dynamics Cheer Squad, who showed off their dance and cheer leading skills. On the Monday, Strathclyde Fire and Rescue also attended, just like last year showing off some of their equipment, educating the public about the role and challenges faced by modern day fire fighters.

Bothwell Childminding Group were recently

awarded £3,660 from the lottery funded, Awards for All.

The funds will be used by the group to purchase new equipment for the children to use.

The scheme is aimed at getting lottery money

into local communities by providing grants from £500 - £10,000, specifically aimed at for non-profit or voluntary community groups.

Elaine Hoolahan from the group told The HUB; “It’s a great amount of money that we received from Awards from All. The money will benefit all the children in the group.”

As part of National Microchipping Month,

which takes place in June, Dogs Trust Glasgow is urging owners to ensure their dogs are chipped and that their microchip contact details are updated and correct. A microchip is a small electronic device the size of a grain of rice that is implanted under the dog’s skin.It is coded with a unique number that is linked to their owner’s contact details on a national database. Microchipping is a great way to permanently identify dogs, but an owner can only be contacted and reunited with their missing dog if their registered details are up to date.To encourage more owners to get their dog microchipped, the Rehoming Centre based in Glasgow is offering the service for free* between 6th and 12th June. Philip McCarlie-Davis, Manager of Dogs Trust Glasgow, says:“National Microchipping Month is vital in raising awareness amongst owners of the importance of getting their dogs microchipped. To support the event, from 6th to 12th June local dog owners can get their canine companions chipped for free at the Rehoming Centre.

Anyone interested should call 0141 773 5130 to make an appointment. All dogs are eligible, not just those rehomed from Dogs Trust.”

As a Councillor within the Thorniewood Ward, North Lanarkshire Council (NLC) covering the areas of Tannochside, Viewpark, Fallside and Birkenshaw I am delighted to give an insight into my role within the community and share this with readers of the Hub.

Holyrood Election - Edinburgh

It would be appropriate to make some comment within the Political Hub about the recent Holyrood Election on 5th May for Members of the Scottish Parliament (MSP). As a Labour Councillor I was disappointed with the result but realistic to know that some Labour voters decided to vote for another political party or did not take part. There have been a number of meetings since then to discuss what went wrong and whilst it is still too early to have a definite answer there are some common threads appearing which suggests the Labour Party could have done things differently. These include having our own Scottish identity, not having a strong leader in place (everyone agrees Ian Gray is an experienced well educated and likeable person – but did not have those leadership qualities). There are other views expressed but these will go into the system when a full evaluation takes place. The six week election period certainly gave me a chance to meet people on the doorstep and hear their views on a

number of issues. Please note that Thorniewood Ward is an extremely large area and I was unable to knock on everyone’s door.

North Lanarkshire Council (NLC)

Hub readers may remember that NLC introduced a £55M saving package ‘Hard Choices – Big Decisions’ in December last year covering the next two years up to March 2013. Councillors were all aware that decisions taken then may impact on certain sectors of our community and whenever we had the details of what it really meant to our community councillors would reserve the right to review individual decisions that were taken. I am delighted to report that the planned reduction to reduce the free 3 mile to 2 mile school transport for secondary schools will be reversed and this recommendation will be put forward at the next full Council Meeting. We identified that over three thousand children would have lost this free service and given the issues of non availability of service buses on certain routes and problems associated with the safe walk to school plans it was important to take this decision. The free bus service will be business as usual.

Another difficult decision taken at that time was to introduce car park charges into NLC. Councillors were aware this would not be favourable within our communities but we have had our budget cut in real terms by nearly £20million

pounds and we have to look at certain income generation plans to try and ensure we maintain a service to all our citizens, including the elderly, the disabled the vulnerable and our children. A consultation exercise has commenced this week which will last until June which will enable all residents from NLC to feed back with their views about car park plans. A number of people have made statements that all the car parks in NLC will be affected which is untrue and that costs will be extortionate which again is not the fact. All of this will be covered within the consultation period and I would urge as many people as possible to respond before the deadline. A £20 million reduction to the NLC budget from the Scottish Government at Edinburgh is a major problem and there is no doubt we cannot help everybody all the time but we need the appropriate finance in place to assist those most vulnerable in our community.

THORNIEWOOD WARDI hold regular monthly

Surgeries within the Ward on a rotational basis and I have to report that enquiries to me are escalating. I have now been a councillor since May 2003 and every single year since then there has been an increased demand for my service.

Housing allocation along with homelessness, housing repair issues and environmental issues are always a regular enquiry at the Surgery. Whilst the sale of council houses has slowed down the demand for housing has increased. We have been fortunate to have new house build programmes in Johnstone Crescent at St Columbas Church + Juniper Road and another 40 new houses will be built on Laburnum Road area. We are delighted with this new social house build programme in

conjunction with the planned new roofs, roughcast, new kitchen, bathroom and rewiring – all in all a positive outcome for the Thorniewood Ward which will assist the residents within our community.

A particular service close to me is the Thorniewood Credit Union. As a previous Debt Counsellor for NLC it was part of my job to set up a credit union within our community. In 1990 I held a meeting in Burnhead Hall to encourage members to join a working group to establish and run their own credit union. After many years of training with the volunteers the Thorniewood Credit Union opened the doors in 1993 and has went on from strength to strength since then. I am delighted to report that Thorniewood Credit Union has just purchased its own piece of land behind the Burnhead Health Centre and they intend to erect a brand new purpose built building. This will allow the credit union to grow and develop further. The building should be opened for business in late 2012 – well done to everyone involved at the credit union.

I hope this brief note gives an idea of the type of work I do within my Ward and at the Civic Centre in Motherwell. I am available at my Surgery within Burnhead Hall, Fallside Hall, Viewpark Community Education Centre and Tannochside Senior Citizen Centre on the 1st and 3rd Tuesday of every month on a rotational basis. Surgeries start at 5pm. Please contact the Civic on 01698 302677 (my direct number) to speak to me or find out more about the Surgeries. Please note I conduct home visits for people who cannot attend the surgery due to illness or disability. In addition I can be contacted by email on [email protected] or at home on 01698 815754.

My name is Marc McLaughlin and I am

your local Estate Agent for the Uddingston and Bothwell area.

The Your Move McLaughlin team deal with residential property Sales and Lettings. So if you are thinking about buying, selling or renting property in the area please feel free to give us a call.

Well, as the year passes by and we race towards the summer holiday period, if you sit back and listen you will no doubt notice that there is less doom and gloom talk and much more chat about recovery. The picture that I can see of our local property landscape matches exactly that. From the very unwelcome fall of 2008 and through the tough times of 2009 and 2010, this year has shaped up quite nicely in comparison for the local housing market.

Property values are more stable and the factual evidence I have is that we are achieving closer to Home Report value for fresh properties to the market. My Uddingston office has also achieved more closing dates this year to date than all of

last year. Another indication of growing demand, which in turn is helping to solidify property values and offer some welcome consistency back to the market..

Encouraging signs all round, which leaves me with a strong suggestion to potential buyers and sellers to talk to us. I am delighted to extend our offer of a free market appraisal to any potential seller or landlord in the area where I can advise you of the current market conditions in detail as well as my opinion of market value. Please feel free to contact me on 01698 539990 or drop me an email at [email protected].

LET’S TALK RECOVERY....

The family would like to thank relatives and friends for their thoughts and prayers at this sad time

You never said "I'm leaving"You never said goodbye

You were gone before we knew itand only God Knew why.

In Life we loved you dearly. In death we love you still.

In our hearts you hold a place, that no one could ever fill.

You left us peaceful memories, your love is still our guide,

and though we can not see you, you are always at our side.

Our family chain is brokenand nothing seems the same.

But as God calls us one by one,the Chain will link again.

Death leaves a heartache no one can heal;Love leaves a memory no one can steal.

A PLEA TO PARENTS

The other day I overheard 2 kids listing a large number

of toys they were getting. It would take me all day

to list every single item, but the most expensive ones on the list included an X-Box, an HD television, a Blu-ray player, and a season ticket for Celtic. These items weren’t for Christmas, or even a birthday. They were for a First Communion.

In my considered opinion the whole First Communion thing has got completely out of hand. When I was a kid, it was about receiving the blessed sacrament for the first time, and was a proud day for the first communicants and their families. Now it’s all about who gets the most money and gifts.

Indeed, last week as I drove past a church the other day with a non-religious friend in the passenger seat we saw a stretched limousine and a vintage car parked outside. I had to explain to him that it was for a First Communion and not the wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton. And

anyway, why would the future King of Britain chose to marry in Coatbridge?

To any parents reading, I implore you- get a grip. It is an important day in the life of both you and your children, but splashing ludicrous amounts of cash on the event simply devalues it and turns it into a pantomime. Besides, at the rate some parents are spending at, by the time I have children of my own- a first communion dress will cost more than the wedding dress bought by the new Duchess of Cambridge.

of a Glasgow man who, in the 1980s, was greeted by 2 STV executives at his front door. They asked if they could use his flat for a spot of filming, and in exchange for this they offered him a handsome sum of money, additional cash to take his family away for the day, and for his hallway to be repainted in the colour of his choice. Needless to say he bit their hand off for the deal.

A few weeks after filming he discovered exactly why they offered to repaint the hall. They’d filmed an episode of Taggart there. A particularly gory episode of Taggart, I might add, where someone was murdered with an axe, leaving the hall covered in blood, and a dead body sprawled across

the floor.Indeed, in the scene

following the murder, Jim Taggart Himself was alleged to have stood over the dead body (axe still embedded in the chest) stating “This is the most

vile, disgusting murder I have ever seen in my life”. Given that he regularly investigated murders in Glasgow, that was quite a statement.

I recalled this story upon hearing that Taggart may not be getting commissioned for another series. Whilst I’m not the greatest fan of the show, it is something of a Scottish institution, and it would be sad to see its passing. So here’s hoping for 3 things. One- that Taggart can be saved. Two- that David Hayman, the only famous Scottish actor NOT to have appeared in the show finally gets a part. And three- the Taggart team finally investigate a realistic Glasgow murder, such as 2 neds getting in a fight over a bottle of

Lambrini or something like that.

By the way, I have no idea if the Taggart axe murder story is true or not, but you have to admit it was a belter. I am told that the poor flat owner took years to sell his flat, as most potential buyers had seen the episode in question and didn’t fancy a flat that gave them nightmares!

THE NEW GENERATION OF MOBILES

I recently got a Blackberry, and for some reason every time I send an email to someone the words “Sent using my Blackberry” appear at the bottom. It annoys me that the makers of the phone think that me buying their phone isn’t enough, and that I should give them some free advertising every time I send an email.

You are entering into a brilliant period for increasing your earning power, and you’ll be busy taking charge of your finances. Money-making opportunities are likely to present themselves, and you feel especially motivated to take advantage of them. Whether it’s a promotion or an all-new position, this is a good time for pursuing your dreams and asking for what you want.

Neptune is retro grade from the 3rd of June so be prepared to go within to find the answers you will be drawn into nature, if you follow your instinct and take that walk you will let go of all the negatives of the past and embrace a fresh start as this is indeed time for your new year to begin and a new way of thinking.

Saturn turns direct from the 13th of June and you could face a few restrictions, stay positive and you will overcome them. You seem to have released some of the demons from your past and a lighter much happier Gemini is surfacing. Time to blow away the cobwebs and start again.

As your sign is ruled by the moon the next full moon on the 15th of June is significant for you as you are peeling back your shell and revealing the vulnerable side of yourself which few get to see, and guess what we like it. It is nice to see the real you. Time for change, let go of the past and embrace a warm and bright future.

The majestic lion, the King of the Beasts, is Leo’s symbol. Throughout history, the lion has symbolized sovereignty, rulership, and courage this month is going to see just that. You have accrued all this power within you this month and all who no longer serve you better watch out. In with the new and out with the old!

While you’ve been rather introspective recently, dear Virgo, and you continue to be withdrawn in the first week of May, you begin to come out of your shell this month. You are hungry for adventure and experiences that lift you above your usual concerns and daily routine. Educational or travel opportunities are opening up in your life, and will continue to do so throughout 2011.

June is a strong month for taking charge of finances, dear Libra, and in particular those shared with others, debts, and loans. It is a good time for borrowing or settling debts, if necessary. Either way, dealing with debt now tends to generate positive outcomes. Relationships have been making headlines in your life recently, and this month, the more intimate aspects of sharing with a special someone become your primary concern.

The first half of June is excellent for work matters, It’s a strong period for personal influence on the job. Some of you might even meet a special someone through your work or health activities. Close partnerships become a major focus as the month progresses. In fact, throughout the remainder of 2011, relationship opportunities are likely to be priority.

Whether it’s a new romance or an existing one, passions run high. Casual dating, entertainment, and creative hobbies all fare well now. As June progresses, work matters become a stronger priority, as do any self-care and health programs. It’s an excellent time not only for finding work, but also for relationships on the job.

By mid-June, your creative juices stir, and you find more opportunities to enjoy yourself. Romance is highly favored now. Your mood is playful and others more readily appreciate your unique romantic and creative style. Artists can find much success now and in the months ahead, and dabblers can pick up new interests.

The pace of your life continues to be hectic as you have a finger in many pies now. The first week of the month is excellent for learning and communication. You are getting your message across with charm and grace. By mid-month, you enter an extended period in which home and family life come into strong focus and are set to improve.

While June can begin at a hectic pace, you’re likely to find much solace in home and family as the month progresses. Efforts to make improvements to your home life should be very successful this month, and you’re likely to want to entertain from home or do some redecorating. This month, Jupiter moves to a favorable position in relation to your sign, boosting not only your confidence but also both motivation and ability to communicate effectively with others.

RCZ going after TT’s crown When it comes to sleek sports coupes, if you were to ask most people to name one, the chances are they would say Audi TT. The TT now in its second generation continues to be a hit with both male and female drivers alike. So, what might you ask is Peugeot doing by bringing out a car to challenge the TT? Enter the new RCZ.

Can Peugeot pull this off? Well first impression suggests it looks remarkably

similar to the old style TT side on, however it does have that sporty appeal. I can see how this car will sell, it looks great! The real test although is in can it make you smile?• Canitshift? The 161bhp 2.0-litre diesel and 154bhp 1.6 turbo petrol will no doubt appeal to pragmatists, but enthusiasts will head straight for the 197bhp 1.6 turbo. It isn’t exactly blistering off the mark, but the most impressive aspect of this engine is its strong mid-range urge and willingness to rev. • Ride&HandlingThe petrol-engined RCZs steer neatly, corner keenly and don’t roll much even when the tyres start to protest. However, you have to put up with a rather jiggly ride. By contrast, the diesel versions feel a tad less sporty and have more in common with a well-sorted family hatchback than a bespoke coupe. • Safety The RCZ majors on secure handling, but full electronic stability control is on hand to help out if the worst happens. Four airbags will also help to cushion the blow. An immobiliser, an alarm, deadlocks and remote central locking are all designed to discourage thieves• HowPracticalisit? The RCZ does have four seats, but in effect it’s

a two seater because the rear ones are next-to-useless for adults – head- and legroom are extremely tight and the rear seatbacks are fixed bolt upright. The rear seats do fold down, but even with them in place the RCZ has a decent-sized boot. • Whataboutthetoys?Entry-level Sport models have sports seats, dual-zone air-conditioning, alloy wheels an MP3-compatible CD/radio, USB port and rear parking sensors. GT cars add leather upholstery, electric heated seats, front parking sensors, automatic lights and wipers, plus larger alloy wheels.

Villagers Season Comes to a Close

With the extremes of the winter weather having

extended the league campaign into May the Villagers brought the curtain down on another season on Saturday with the traditional end of season Crocks v Colts fixture.

With the S1 squad providing an excellent build up to the game, with an exhibition match against Cumbernauld, the scene was set for the old gladiators to take on their more youthful counterparts in the annual fixture.

With the wind and rain making handling difficult the Crocks played a more controlled game, keeping the play tight. What they lacked

in fitness they made up for in experience and this ensured that the Colts didn’t run the old boys ragged in the opening exchanges. That said, the Colts had their moments and with a bit more composure should surely have had the game out of sight before half time.

As it was, the Crocks started the second half with a slender lead, and despite a further 2 tries from both sides it was the Crocks who held on to record a 29-25 victory, their 4th win in the past 5 seasons.

Despite their defeat, if the Villagers can keep this group of young players together then the future of the Club is in safe hands.

TUNNOCK Uddingston’s miserable start to their

Scottish National Cricket League Premier Division campaign continued on Saturday as they as they lost by six runs to newly-promoted Ayr at Bothwell Castle Policies.

Due to several interruptions the match was reduced to 43 over a side. Uddingston captain Ricky Bawa lost the toss and Ayr elected to bat first sending in professional Michael Papps and Andi McElnea to open their innings. With Paul Hoffmann still nursing an injured shoulder Bawa and Ras Priyandar Shana opened the bowling for the villagers.

Battling cautiously Ayr didn’t loose their first wicket until Bawa had McElnea caught out for cover for six out of a total 30 in the 12th over.

After this reverse Papps steadily accumulated the runs in partnership with Neil Smith (29) and David Johnston (28)

Ayr were on 147 for 3 after 38 overs when Bawa who had been rotating his attack in a bid to secure wickets, put on Alec Day and in the space of two overs he had put his side in what should have been winning position.

In the first over the young Australian armature trapped Papps Ibw when he

was on 77, clean-bowled Colin McCrossin with his next ball, and took two more wickets in his next over.

Day got 1 more wicket as Ayr were 170-8 at the end of their43 overs under the Duckworth Lewis rules the Villagers were set a target of 184 in 43 overs.

Bawa sent Hoffman and Mo Pamran to open the innings but, after stroking four boundaries and a single, Australian Paul was out in the third over with the score at 19.

Amir Gul (2) followed him into the pavilion in the six over, quickly followed by Calum McLeod (5) in the ninth.

When Pamran (13) fell in the 13th over, Uddingston had lost the cream of their batting with only 41 runs on the board, for the

loss of four wickets. This brought Priyadarshana

and Day together, and they added 66 runs before Ras was trapped Ibw for 34, with the score 171-5.

Day, having already having excelled with the ball by taking five wickets for 13, showed his mettle with the bat in partnership with first Bryan Clark (6) and the stubborn Gregg Watson (22), But the score was 171-7 in the 41st over when Day was run out to a direct hit after scoring a priceless 59.

The last three wickets made little difference as Uddingston were all out for 178 in the final over.

Uddingston will hope to bounce back on Saturday when they travel to Edinburgh to face Grange.

Kilmarnock 0 Hamilton 4

Hamilton travelled to Kilmarnock to face the team currently bottom

of the league having lost all of their games so far this season.

The game turned out to be a lot trickier than was expected as Hamilton were made to work hard for their victory

Manager Kevin Murphy said after the match “I am happy with the second half performance and the attitude the players showed after the break. I made

four changes from last week and that may have had some bearing on the first half performance”.

Hamilton started this game slowly and struggled in the first half to get any impetuous going forward. Only one chance was created and that was well saved by the Kilmarnock keeper.

A tough team talk at half time between Manager and Players resulted in a more spirited second half display.

The increase in tempo paid dividends almost immediately when Gill Inglis playing further forward than normal picked the ball up on the half way line and powered her way to the edge of the box before sending a shot high into the net to put Hamilton one up.

Hamilton then took control of the match and scored another two goals in quick succession, a great one two between Helen Templeton and Cheryl

McCulloch on 55 minutes allowed the latter to finish neatly with a shot that sneaked under the keeper.

Five minutes later a terrific long ball out of defence by Lynsey Hogg found Inglis running into the penalty box where she slotted the ball home for her second of the match and to put Hamilton three goals to the good.

The fourth and final goal arrived with only ten minutes left, a mistake in the home defence landed at the feet of

Toni Mason who rifled it low and hard into the corner.

This was the proverbial game of two halves a lack lustre performance in the first half was turned around by a more positive attacking second period.

Manager Murphy summed up the performance “We have now scored eleven goals in our last two games without conceding, that gives us a strong foundation to build on for our next game against Rangers”.

Premier League

Hamilton 7 Falkirk 0Under 17’s

Hamilton welcomed Hutchison Vale to the John

Cumming Stadium in Carluke for this SWPL match.

Manager Kevin Murphy said after the match, “We got off to a flyer today scoring after only two minutes but then took our foot off the gas and did not put any great pressure on the Falkirk goal. Credit to the girls though as in the second half we took the game to them and showed some clinical finishing running out easy winners at the end.”

Hamilton started quickly and scored in under two minutes when Helen Templeton slid a lovely ball in behind the full

back to Ashley McDonald who steadied herself before firing low into the net to put the home side one up.

The rest of the first half turned into a bit of a struggle as Falkirk battled hard to stay in the match and Hamilton failed to take advantage of any chances that came their way.

The second half was only three minutes old when Hamilton doubled their lead; a great through ball to Cheryl McCulloch gave her the space to hold off the challenge of the visitors defence to fire a superb shot into the top corner from just outside the box.

Hamilton then turned the screw on the Falkirk defence and scored another four goals in a rampant ten minute spell. The first of these followed a bad mistake in defence; McCulloch latched onto a poor back pass and squared it for Gill Inglis to fire home. Inglis doubled her own tally when good work in the box by Toni Mason allowed her to lay the ball back for her to thump it home. After Falkirk failed to clear a corner McDonald managed to knock home number five from close range. Number six followed quickly when a long ball down the middle caught the visitor’s

defence napping McCulloch latched onto the pass and slid the ball home.

The final goal arrived with only seven minutes left on the clock a free kick by Lynsey Hogg was controlled by McCulloch who laid it into the path of Helen Templeton who took one touch before finding the bottom corner.

Manager Kevin Murphy summed the day up “We have now won our last here games and hope to continue this excellent form next week against Kilmarnock”.

Hamilton’s next match is away to Kilmarnock on Sunday 29th of May.

Thorniewood travelled to Greenfield Park last Friday

evening for their final league match of the season, in the knowledge that only a win would force Kilsyth Rangers into getting a win the following day to decide who would be champions.

Shettleston on the other hand were fighting for divisional survival making it an all round tense affair in front of a fairly large crowd.

The visiting ‘Wood’, despite needing the win, really were slow to get out the blocks with most of the early chances falling to the Glasgow side. Both sides had chances to take the lead but neither could take advantage.

With everything to play for, tensions were running high and the game boiled over in the 35th minute when ‘Town’s’ Brown and ‘Wood’s’ O’Neil clashed off the ball, resulting

in the Thorniewood man having to leave the pitch with a heavily bleeding nose. ht0-0

In the second period Shettleston again had the upper hand and the best of the early chances. They then took the lead in the 64th minute when Brown, who was lucky to be still on the pitch, scored creating jubilant scenes in what had become a very hostile environment.

With the chance of a league

title, if they managed to win, the Thorniewood management team changed tactics to more attacking formation which saw the introduction of McGowan and Devlin.

The changed paid instant dividends for Thorniewood who managed to get on the front foot for the first time in the match and they levelled in 75 minutes when a Martin Devlin corner on the right was headed home by Mark Daly. With the

game level, Shettleston were relegated if the result stayed the same. As a result, they threw everything forward in search of another goal which would secure league safety.

However, in the dying minutes ‘Wood’ pushed Newman and Daly forward in an attempt to keep the title hopes alive but as in the Johnston Burgh game the little bit of luck and composure required wasn’t forthcoming

with the only cheers at the final whistle coming from a group of Kilsyth players and fans who had made the journey to watch a highly entertaining yet tense game.

In all, the result was slightly disappointing as it brought an end to a fantastic season for Thorniewood who can now look forward to Super League football next season, whilst Shettleston face Second Division games.

Protect Your children

from the Sun As children are far more sensitive to the harmful effects of UV radiation, it is vital for them to wear sunscreen, protective clothing, hat and sunglasses. The threat of the sun’s harm to our eye is just the same as it is to our skin. The fact that the ultraviolet (UV) rays of the sun are damaging to all the layers of our eyes, sunglasses are truly necessary to wear. Everybody is advised to wear sunglasses especially when outdoors. As early as infancy, wearing of sunglasses is advised

During warm spells it is crucial to ensure that children become accustomed to drinking more fluids so that they do not end up dehydrated. When leaving the home it is also helpful to always bring a bottle of water or children's flask.

The Rising Five Playgroup in Viewpark Community Centre held a food week in conjunction with the Bee Healthy project. In the first week of May the staff at The Rising Five playgroup in Viewpark

community Centre decided to hold a food awareness week with their under 5’s and in close partnership with the Bee Healthy project held two days in which the kids identified fruit and made

vegetable face, some of which you can see from the photos. They also drew their favourite fruits, and there is some budding artist amongst the youngsters!

Andy Mc Cann , the project co-ordinator of Bee Healthy said ‘ This is a fantastic way of educating

youngsters in good healthy food and is part of the ethos of the Bee healthy project in Viewpark. It is great that we can get involved in activities like this and hope to do more. I feel it is important for a

child’s development to be able to identify and taste different fruit and vegetables, which can have a hand in stopping the ‘ I don’t eat fruit and veg attitude’ which I hear often in my daily working life’

All in all it was a fun and refreshing look at fruit and vegetables and we hope that it leads onto other activities.

If you run a playgroup and would like to get involved in something like this then please do not hesitate

to contact Andy Mc Cann at [email protected]

Each of these is ONE PORTION OF FRUIT & VEG

o One whole medium-sized fruit or vegetables e.g. apple, orange, banana

o A couple of small fruits or a cup of very small fruits e.g. 2 plums, a cup of grapes or berries

o ½ -1 tablespoon of dried fruits e.g. dates, sultanas, prunes, apricots

o 2-3 tablespoons of cooked or tinned fruit

o A piece of a big fruit e.g. ½ a grapefruit, wedge of melon, couple rings of pineapple, ½ avocado

o 3 tablespoons of raw, cooked, frozen or tinned vegetables o Bowl of salad

o Glass of fruit juice (150ml) – only counts ONCE per day

DON’T count a glass of squash or a fruit “drink” or fruit yoghurt or fruit and nut chocolate or a tablespoon of jam. There’s just not enough fruit in them to make a portion!

o What about potatoes? Eat plenty of potatoes, but DON’T COUNT THEM AS ONE OF YOUR 5 PORTIONS. Potatoes contain vitamins, fibre and minerals. Like bread and cereals, they are a very good source of starchy carbohydrates, which fill you up and give energy.
