BHS can be scary in the dark and the performances have been created to leave you looking over your shoulder and wondering what that noise was, so this event is not suita-ble for small children!

No Pens Wednesday

On Wednesday 13th November, Year 7 took part in a national day called ‘No Pens’ Wednesday where students

put down their pens and focused on developing their oracy skills for the day.

The students were involved in a wide variety of speaking and listening activities

throughout the day, such as: drama performances based on A Christmas Carol in

English; mock parliaments and debates on who should be the next king in history;

memory games and vocabulary competitions in modern foreign languages; using

mnemonics to verbally recall note names in music; whole class discussions in

food technology; and so much more. There was a real buzz across the whole of

Year 7 and an astounding 98% of students said they would like to take part in the

day again! Below are some of the comments students made in their evaluations:

“I learnt new things and it was fun.”

“I liked learning in different ways.”

“I like how we got to practice speaking skills and listening skills which are good to get a job.”

“It’s a new way of learning.”

“I liked it because it was more fun and we got to understand things more by discussing it.”

Safeguarding Ending human trafficking and modern day slavery

Thank you for the donations to City Hearts that are starting to come in. The work of this charity helps victims of human trafficking and modern day slavery and reinforces what we learn in school around these issues. Please help us by do-nating:

NEW dressing gowns, pyjamas, slippers and fluffy socks for children, young people and adults. These will be wrapped and given as Christmas presents.

Good quality used winter clothing and footwear for children, young people and adults. We will take collections up until Friday 13th December. Thank you. that collects the most!!

For the vast majority, Advent is a time of opening windows on a calendar and watching the children’s faces as they devour the piece of chocolate! And it’s great to see the excitement build as they get closer to the Christmas Eve and Christmas Day windows. However, rather than Advent being a season of ‘taking’, can we turn it around to be a season of ‘giving’? Rather than ‘taking a piece of chocolate’ could we put something back into the lives of those less fortunate than ourselves? Reverse Advent encourages us to do exactly that. During Advent could you commit to setting aside a bag or box and each day put into it a food item

which would help those in need within Stockport? A recent report confirmed that over 9,000

children live in poverty in the Stockport area – wouldn’t it be great if, through our efforts, we could

bring some Christmas cheer into the lives of all these children (and their parents too!).

Year 7 1st December at the weekend, Year 7! Let the Christmas festivities begin! I expect you will all be thinking about what you would like for Christmas, the latest X box game or I- phone, the latest in designer trainers or some MAC make-up! Let’s not forget what the real spirit of this time of year is all about a time for Love, Light, Hope and Peace and a time to focus on those who are not as fortunate as ourselves. During the month of December, this year, we are involved with Reverse Advent which is a foodbank charity, our aim is that each student brings one thing in to support those who need this most in the Stockport area this Christmas. We are also supporting the charity City Hearts who support victims of human trafficking by offering clothing, shelter and activities for some of the most vulnerable and invisible members of society. Many of these persons have been sold into what is effectively modern day slavery and exist on very meagre means often only in the clothes they stand in. Any donations are a massive help! You can bring your donations of new pyjamas or good quality hats, gloves and scarfs, winter coats and warm clothing you can drop it at main reception. Reminder for you all to stay warm, stay safe and keep well, remember hoodies and overcoats are not allowed in school so it may be time to invest in a black V necked jumper. Congratulations this week to Poppy in 7ATR and Raphael in 7AGN who have received the most P points this week and also to Daisy from 7AGN who becomes our second millionaire reader. place for attendance… this isn’t looking too good. Well done to those who have been in every single day and to

those who are trying their absolute best to boost their attendance figures.

As we know, poor attendance WILL be detrimental to our grades. You are a fantastic Year group who have an

incredible amount of potential, please keep this in mind when you are making the decision to potentially not

come into school.

*Missing six days every term of every year is the same as missing one whole school year

*95% attendance sounds good, but means that you are taking one day off a month

Research shows that having 17 days off per year loses you 1 GCSE grade in Year 11

Please use our computing equipment sensibly. Your Head of Year and our Safeguarding Officer are

alerted to any inappropriate comments made on your computer. Do not leave your PC unattended

and please do not share your account password.

Uniform: socks must be below the knee and please do not wear jumpers that do not have the

Bramhall logo on.

Mobile phones should be switched off and in your bag at all times, unless you have been given

permission by a member of staff at that specific time.

If you are feeling poorly, please ask permission to visit our welfare officer, please

do not use your mobile phones to contact your parents without alerting our

Welfare Officer or Head of Year first.

Year 9 Another great week Year 9. Thank you to all of you who come to school every day and do all that is expected of you.

The weather is cold and wet and we are all aware that there are lots of coughs, colds and sickness bugs around, however we do still ask that you do your best to get yourselves into school.

In assembly this week we talked about our mental health and the 5 steps to wellbeing. We discussed the importance of being connected with the people around you, sharing your thoughts and feelings and listening to others. The importance of being active, even with the night’s drawing in, use the weekends to get yourselves out and about and exercising – get off those phones and x-boxes for a while!!

Look for ways to improve and develop your strength and resilience. Don’t be scared of failure, of giving new things ago. Persistence is a great thing. Give to others, this can be even the smallest thing – holding a door open, share a smile and watch how the world starts to smile back at you. Making someone else feel good about themselves will only make you feel better too.

Look after each other and be kind We continue to support several charities this Christmas.

“City Hearts” who provide valuable support to vulnerable and exploited men, woman and children here in Manchester. As a school we are supporting again this year. Years 9s were particularly generous last year supporting the charity, so I am hoping for the same again.

All our core groups now have a REVERSE ADVENT bag, this is a very worthy charity and we are encouraging our students to bring an item in to support this. Even just one item will make a difference.

Year 10

This week I have asked your core tutors to revisit your tracking grades and speak to you all about your attitude to learning (ATL) scores. ATL is the first step to attaining well in school, and the variable you can do the most to improve in the shortest possible time. You teachers have been asked to score your ATL based on all you bring to each lesson; punctuality, effort, homework, thirst for knowledge, classroom involvement as well as conduct in the classroom.

Currently most of our Y10 students rate as 3 or ‘Good’ (or higher) in our 1 – 4 system. I am issuing a challenge to all Y10 students to increase their ATL score in time for the next track, and for everyone to achieve at least an average of 3 across all of their subjects. If you are on report to improve your ATL grades you will meet regularly with your Core Tutor to review your targets over the next 10 days. You can do it!

Year 11

Another week over, and we’re over half way through this half term now – only three weeks to go until we break

up for Christmas! It will certainly be a very well deserved break for students and staff, and there will be lots of

festivities to be enjoyed towards the end of the term.

However, It’s really important for all Year 11 students to continue to act a positive role models for the rest of

the school, even when you’re worn out from the mocks! Remember, the other year groups look up to you older

students, and will look to you for guidance on how to behave and conduct themselves around the school (and

out in the community).

Cast your minds back to one of the first assemblies of the year, when we spoke about expectations. These

expectations included: coming to school every day, on time, in the correct uniform, with a positive attitude, and

being ready and keen to learn. We stressed the importance of getting to your lessons on time, working hard

and being conscientious and courteous to everyone. Don’t lose sight of the importance of adhering to these

expectations, following them will help you achieve your potential this year!

at Bramhall High School!

Welcome to all of our new Year 7s joining this September and welcome back Years 7, 8, 9, 10 and 11!

Instrument and voice tuition lessons are now fully up and running. If you were having lessons last year or you have handed in a new starter application letter, you or your parents/carers should have been contacted by your tutor or your new tutor with information on your first lesson by now. If you have only just handed in a new application form, please give us a few days to process your application.

If you would like to start a new instrument or start having singing lessons, please complete the application form that has been sent to all parents in an email. If you have not received any contact about your application that you have already handed in, or you have any concerns about this, please e-mail dpickton@bramhallhigh.stockport.sch.uk and we will arrange as soon as possible.

Important notice for students: please make sure you get yourself a yellow music exit pass from your tutor in the music department during your first instrument lesson. If you do not have a yellow music card, you may not be allowed to go to your music lesson by your class teacher.

In addition, our extra-curricular music programme is now fully up and running. Please see the details on the next page for when all of the different groups run. A couple of the main groups to look out for, especially for new Year 7s:

Year 11s have reached the last 32 in the National Cup. The lads travelled

to Nottingham after an early morning exam and won the game 3-1 with

Ethan G scoring a hat-trick. Man of the Match was Mikey M.

A great away fixture at Cheadle Hulme High School on Tuesday, years 7,8, and 10 played a league fixture and the results were as follows:-

Year 7 won 24-3 (POTM- Mia)

Year 8 Lost 18-15 (POTM- Poppy, with exceptional shooting from Emily)

Year 9 (friendly) Lost against their year 20’s 22-18 (POTM- Isabella)

Year 10 Lost 22-12 (POTM- Aleena)

Great effort girls, some illness and injuries had affected the performance of some of the teams but the rest really battled hard in their absence. Good luck to year 7 & 8 teams who have a league match on Wednesday against Stockport Academy at home.

Next week we have a league match against St James AWAY, the team sheets will be up so please tick your names ASAP.
