semester started with a

and our District 9

Meeting. The District 9

meeting is a great way

to collaborate with

leaders from other

schools, all the while

enjoying the slopes ofBreckenridge, CO.

FIFTH EDITION FEBRUARY 2014

At this years meeting, our chapter won District 9 Chapter

of the year! This is a pretty exciting accomplishment since weve

worked so hard all year. Each of our ASDA officers and members

have been instrumental in reaching this level. Thank you for your

support.

At the end of this month, 18 members from our chapter will

be attending ASDA Annual Session. I will be running for National

ASDA President and could not be more excited. Im looking

forward to visiting the district caucuses and helping themunderstand why Im the right fit for ASDA President. I want to

thank the current Houston ASDA officer team, my classmates, and

the faculty for all of their support during this election. Im looking

forward to representing UTSD well.

community service projects at the

UT School of Dentistry at Houston.

This past November, some of our ASDA membersparticipated in a health fair put on by Students Global Health inTexas, aka SIGHT. Student representatives from UT medicalschool, Baylor College of Medicine, U of H pharmacy, and U ofH optometry school were also present. They provided patrons of

the health fair with vision, hearing, blood pressure, and bloodglucose screenings. The event was held at Alliance MulticulturalCenter in Bellaire, a cultural and educational community center.

They were able to provide dental screenings and oralhygiene education for approximately 175 people. Many of thehealth fair patrons had recently emigrated from regions such asNepal, Burma, and eastern Africa and had not had access todental care for most of their lives. This was an excellent culturallearning experience and volunteers from different classes had agreat time getting to know each other. ASDA has been invited

back to the Alliance this spring for another health fair, aimed atserving international refuges that have recently arrived inHouston. ASDA gives much thanks to Dr. Neumann forguidance and supervision at the SIGHT health fair.

Getting to attend District 9 Retreatwas one of the most memorable and funexperiences of my dental school career

thus far. Not only were the speaker topicsinteresting - building a practice,networking, and being passionate about

our industry - but I can say with fullconfidence that we heard from a futureADA President who gave the most

impassioned and thoughtful seminar Iveheard on bringing change to a staticorganization.

District 9 includes the dental schools in Texas, Colorado,and Oklahoma. UT Houston ASDA won Chapter of the

year for their outstanding achievements on the local ASDA

level.


Skiing was, of course, a great part of the trip. However it came at a cost as Ihit a tree on the first day. Despite the recovery I was able to spend time with some

great people from around our district and share ideas about how to improve ASDAat our schools.Meeting past ASDA national Presidents and Vice Presidents was the highlight of

this trip for me. Their advice and mentorship has already been called upon and Iconsider myself extremely lucky to have had the opportunity to attend this meeting.

For anyoneconsidering applying for an

officer position or whothinks we need a newposition they could fill, I

strong encourage you tocontact us about what you

can do. Its trips like thisthat help flesh out thedental school experienceand prepare you for what

comes after graduation.

When and where is Pre-Dental Day?

Saturday March 8th, 2014

What is pre-dental day?

Sessions include a tour of the school grounds, topics on

the application process, interviewing, personal

statements, life as a dental student, and addresses from

the Dean and Associate Dean of Admissions.

All attendees will have the opportunity to experience

drilling in the simulation clinic along with waxing in

separate breakout sessions.

ASDA is excited to host its first annualPre-dental day on March 8, 2014. Studentsfrom universities all over Texas were invited toparticipate. One hundred students total will be

joining us in this event from the University ofHouston, Baylor University, Texas A&M, TexasState, UT Pan-American, Rice University,Houston Baptist University, St. EdwardsUniversity, Texas Christian University, EastTexas Baptist, Tyler Junior College, Lamar

University, Wharton County Junior College, St.Marys University, and Stephen F. AustinUniversity.

Undergraduate students will be enjoying aday filled with activities including workshops onwriting personal statements, sessions discussingstudent life, as well as questions and answersessions with dental students. Additionally, theywill get a chance to drill and wax in the schoolspreclinical labs, bringing them that much closerto the life of a dental student. ASDA, with thehelp of dental student organizations such as theHispanic Student Dental Association, AsianAmerican Student Dental Association, TexasAssociation of Women Dentists, StudentNational Dental Association, Alpha Omega, andStudent Professionalism and Ethics Association,are making this possible. This project would not

be possible without the help of all theseorganizations, ASDAs Pre-dental Co-Chairs(Christopher Thorburn, Iliana Saavedra, andAlex Eldgerly), and Dr. Pierpont and DeanValenza.

The goal of pre-dental day is to allowundergraduate students, who are interested in acareer in dentistry, a chance to explore UTSDand learn more about the profession. In addition,all the activities planned aid as enrichment thatwill help them in their application process.

ASDA Going Global:Update on Toothbrush and Toothpaste Drive Donations

In the November 2013 issueof The Houston Fill, we reportedthat your donations for the PatriotDay Toothbrush and ToothpasteDrive for the troops were in routeto an Army base in the Horn ofAfrica. The donations have arrived!Captain Barrett (a graduate ofBaylor College of Dentistry)

stationed in Djibouti, has used ourdonations to aid in presenting aTooth Talk about preventive oralhygiene to local civilians. ASDAgives our continued thanks do Dr.and Mrs. Fullerton for sponsoringthe shipment of the donations.
