College Musical – Dazzle: A Space-tacular

Rehearsals, set design and costume creation are all well underway for our musical in May. I

strongly encourage all parents and students to support this college event. We will also be

celebrating the college’s 85th year as part of the festivities.

Reading Plus

Year 11 students have been given a great opportunity with the Reading Plus program. This

program is tailored to specific needs of students and all students will benefit from participation.

It requires short but regular sessions to build up the physical skills of eye scanning but also the

cognitive foundations of vocabulary, comprehension and speed all essential to good reading.

The other great benefit of this program is that it increases students’ knowledge base. Articles

are interesting and geared to their ability and interest level. Feedback from within the program

enables the developers to better target students with articles that are interesting to them.

Students should be aiming to do a little Reading Plus every day for maximum results.

Lenten Resource

The Diocesan Lenten Resource for next week can be found at the link below. It contains

excellent reflection on the readings coming up this Sunday as we prepare for the Easter season

approaching.

Diocesan Lenten Reflection Week 4

Readings for Mass Sunday 30 March 2014

First reading, 1 Samuel 16:1,6-7,10-13 …Jesse had him sent for, a boy of fresh complexion, with

fine eyes and pleasant bearing. …

Psalm, Psalm 22:1-6 … The Lord is my shepherd: there is nothing I shall want.

Second reading, Ephesians 5:8-14 …be like children of light,…

Gospel, John 9:1,6-9,13-17,34-38 …‘He put a paste on my eyes, and I washed, and I can see.’

Kea McNeill – Campus Minister

On 25 March we celebrated the feast of the

Annunciation. The feast celebrates the angel Gabriel’s

appearance to the Virgin Mary, His announcement and

that the Blessed Virgin had been chosen to be the Mother

of God, and Mary’s willing acceptance of God’s Holy

plan.

‘The angel said to her, “do not be afraid, Mary, for you

have found favour with God. And now, you will

conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you will

name him Jesus … the Holy Spirit will come upon you,

and the power of the Most High will overshadow you;

therefore the child to be born will be Holy; he will be

called the Son of God. And now, your relative Elizabeth in her old age has also conceived a

son; and this is the sixth month for her who said to be barren. For nothing will be impossible

with God.” Then Mary said “Here am I, the servant of the Lord; Let it be with me according to

your word.” Then the angel departed from her.

(Luke 1: 30-31, 35-38)

Although this day is not a day of Holy Obligation, it is a special day in the Church when we

honour Mary for her role in the life of Jesus and the Church as our holy Mother. We offer up

this prayer in hopes of following in her most gracious example;

Holy Spirit, You Spoke to Mary through an angel to invite her to participate in the plan of

salvation. Though she questioned how it was possible for her to become the mother of the

Messiah, and she knew she faced rejection from Joseph and others, she gave You her yes. With

the help of her prayers we want to become fully willing to say yes to our part in giving Christ

to the world.

Encourage us when we don’t understand what You’re asking. Bless us with the grace of hearing

the call and the courage to trust in Your plan. Let it be done unto me according to Your will.

Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us. Amen

Edna Galvin – Assistant to the Principal: Curriculum

Written Exam – All Students

All students, with the exception of the Industry Placement group, will be completing a written

test next Wednesday. For the Year 12 QCS group this will be important practice for the Core

Skills test as well as feedback to the QCS staff to see how the students are progressing. For ALL

other students it is a most important check on their written literacy. The students have already

undertaken a test on their reading literacy and this is the next step in collecting data to assist

our students to write and communicate more effectively. Literacy remains a most important

aspect of all workplaces – regardless of what technologies are invented in the future, literacy

will remain a most vital life and workplace skill. This is why the Year 12 Reading Programme

and the Year 11 Reading Plus Programme are so important.

QCS Book – Year 12 students

By now all Year 12 students intending to do the Queensland Core Skills Test should have

purchased the ‘Pathways to Success’ book which is available from Reception at a cost of $30.

As we will be using this book extensively during our QCS preparation lessons, it is a matter of

urgency of that all OP eligible students have their own copy of this excellence resource.

Exam Procedures – Students

1. Read your exam timetable carefully and note all exams. This is YOUR responsibility.

2. Turn up in plenty of time – half hour before most exams or at 8.25 am for morning

exams.

3. Wear full academic uniform.

4. Phone the college if you are going to be late or are ill. Illness will usually require a medical

certificate to be presented when you return to school. You will still be required to

complete the exam.

5. Bring all necessary equipment – spare pens, calculators, rulers, erasers, extra batteries etc in

a clear container. You will not be allowed to borrow anything during the exams. Do not

bring other materials into the exam.

6. When called over the PA, line up in classes in alphabetical order so that rolls can be

marked. This order is also the order that you will sit in for the exam. Follow teacher

directions.

7. Dispose of any study notes before you enter the exam room.

8. Once you enter the exam room you must remain silent and not communicate with any

other student in any way. TO DISRUPT AN EXAM IS A SERIOUS BREACH OF THE

COLLEGE BEHAVIOUR CODE.

9. During perusal, you may not write your answers, but, in some subjects, you may be able

to write notes on the exam. Remember perusal means read thoroughly, not skim.

10. Read the whole paper during perusal and ask questions at that time.

11. Do not ask teachers how to answer questions – they cannot tell you and it wastes your

valuable time.

12. At St Patrick’s you may not leave the exam room until the set time, ie the end of the exam.

13. No food is to be taken into exam rooms and water bottles must be kept on the floor.

14. If you wish to speak to a supervisor you must stand in your place. Do NOT raise your

hand.

15. MP3s, iPods, Mobile Phones etc are strictly forbidden in the exam room at all times.

16. We are under State and National requirements for the qualifications gained by senior

assessment including exams – these require the college to conduct exams under strict,

secure, ethical conditions.

17. Rearranging an exam can only be done under very exceptional circumstances which MUST

be disclosed to the Administration of the college – it is not desirable because of the reasons

stated above.

18. SCHOOL NOTICES will be posted on noticeboards each day. Please check these for any

important information.

Sarah Regan – Cultural Coordinator

Over the weekend, I was fortunate to witness the astounding talent, dedication and potential

in the students who were involved in the musical and those who attended the KMEIA Choral

Festival rehearsal and performance.

Sunday was certainly the busiest day in the past week, as the cast of “Dazzle” came together

for a full day rehearsal with the band, and other very valuable volunteers (students, parents

and staff of St Patrick’s College) worked on props and costumes simultaneously. A big thank

you to all those who came and made the day such a productive one!

With the rehearsal for “Dazzle” finishing at 3:00 pm

on Sunday, I was very proud to then see four of our

students race over to Mercy College for a choral

workshop with Mr Anthony Young and Dr Debra

Shearer-Dirie from Brisbane. Rebecca Wootton,

Victoria Burton, Ellie Kaddatz and Angela Galea

were perfect representatives for St Patrick’s College

at the KMEIA Regional Choral Festival concert on

Monday night, and I would like to personally thank

them for their maturity and positivity. We had a

blast!

As exams commence this week, there is no Stage

Band rehearsal until next term. Also, there is no

ensemble practice next week. Good luck everyone in

your exams!

Debating report (Mr Mark Gibbs)

The second round of the Apex Interschool debating competition was held at St Pat’s last night.

All three St Pat’s teams were arguing the negative side of the driving age should be raised.

St Pat’s Gold defeated Mirani State High School, while St Pat’s Red defeated Mackay North

State High School. St Pat’s White lost narrowly to Pioneer State High School.

Many thanks to the teachers who coach the teams and especially to community adjudicators

Ms Nicole Ryan, Ms Meredith Farquhar and Ms Catherine Luck who also volunteer their time

so generously.

Thanks also to the parents who assist students with the preparation and rehearsal of their

debates. The next round of the senior debates will be 6 May.

Aquatics Carnival

The St Patrick’s Aquatics carnival was held last Thursday with what turned out to be excellent

weather conditions providing a safe and enjoyable day of competition for both staff and

students. The day commenced with the annual college triathlon that is a challenging event for

all students and staff who are willing to test their endurance. Following a race briefing, the

triathlon commenced with the first wave of individual males followed by male teams, and all

female competitors at two minute intervals. Swimmers were required to swim 6 laps (300m)

and it didn’t take long for the males to begin exiting the water to commence the cycle leg, a 3

lap ride around a technical Gooseponds course. Jonathan Grech was first out of the water for

the boys closely followed by Lachlan Murphy. In the girls individual event, Zoe Breitkreutz

exited the water with a substantial lead over her nearest opponents.

The three lap cycle around the Gooseponds required students to ride sensibly to ensure the

cycle leg was incident free. Fortunately all students managed to avoid any mishaps and safely

returned to T2 (transition two) after successfully completing their three laps. The run leg of the

triathlon can be particularly challenging for individual competitors with little triathlon

WHAT’S ON AT THE MECC:

The Improvisation Workshop with the cast of Doc Faustus -The Soulless Western is this

weekend – Saturday 29 March 2014 @ MECC 2.30pm. This opportunity is FREE to ticket

holders for the show, which is that very evening at 7.30pm. It promises to be a great

show and a fantastic learning experience for our local drama enthusiasts.

experience. The legs can feel heavy and lethargic after the swim and bike legs and this was

definitely experienced by our individual competitors as they commenced the two lap 3km run.

For the students, it looked to be a race between two as Jonathan Grech maintained his lead

over Lachlan Murphy after the cycle leg. It was always going to come down to the run leg to

decide who would be the open boy champion and it was during the first lap of the run that

Lachlan made his move passing Jonathan who could only watch and grimace as his younger

opponent extended his lead in the final lap to comfortably claim the win in a time of 37 mins

27 sec with Jonathan finishing second in 39 mins 09 sec. John Mulherin finished on the

podium in third position in a time of 43 mins 23 sec. In the individual female race, year 11

student, Zoe Breitkreutz maintained her lead throughout the cycle leg but it appeared that the

2013 champion, Gabrielle DeBoni was starting to make her move early in the run leg and it

didn’t take long for her to take the lead eventually crossing the line in a time of 37 mins 46 sec

to be crowned the open girl’s triathlon champion for 2014. Gabrielle actually recorded the

second fastest individual time of the day only 19 seconds behind Lachlan proving that the girls

can certainly mix it with the boys. Zoe finished in second in a time of 41 mins 29 seconds with

Rhiannon Zahra in third in a time of 59 minutes 46 seconds.

Congratulation must go to all students who competed in the triathlon as an individual or as a

member of a team.

Following the triathlon it was obvious that both Colin (Year 11 Boys) would be difficult to beat

in the house championship point’s race opening up a sizeable lead over the other house teams.

Being well represented in the individual and team’s triathlon event is crucial in gaining valuable

house points and Colin was highly represented in this event.

It was up to the house novelty events to decide the overall champion house for the 2014

Aquatics Carnival and it was the Year 12 girls (McAuley) who started to make their move in the

competition with their high level of participation gaining valuable house points. Not to be

outdone, Rice (Year 12 Boys) also started to make their move on Colin with consistent results

in all novelty events. With only the relay event remaining Rice held the lead in the overall

points by only one point.

The Relay event is handicapped with the top four 50m freestyle times being used to calculate

the handicaps. McAuley started off scratch with Chisholm starting 6 seconds after. Rice was off

27 seconds followed by Colin off 31 seconds. McAuley held on to take the win but it was

between Colin and Rice to decide the overall house champion. Jonathan Grech (Rice) held a

narrow lead over Zane Viljoen (Colin) in the final leg but it was Zane who touched the wall in

second to ensure that Colin would be the house champions for 2014. At the end of the day

Colin house (694 points) took out the competition from Rice (683 points) with McAuley

finishing on 663 points and Chisholm 471 points.

The level of participation on the day was pleasing with the majority of students taking the

opportunity to accumulate points for their respective houses. The Year 11 house groups now

have a good understanding of what it takes to compete well in inter-house competitions and

will no doubt be formidable opponents for the Year 12’s in the remaining 2014 competitions.

One of the most entertaining events on the program was the age championship swimming

events contested over 50m in butterfly, backstroke, breaststroke and freestyle. These events

generally involve our competitive swimmers with some students happy to fill up the lanes.

Results for both age championship events and the triathlon can be seen below.

As a result of a leaking roof, the Mackay/ Whitsunday Futsal Titles have been postponed until

some extra time to prepare for the competition.

First XIII Rugby League

Despite going down 38 - 10 to St Brendan’s College Yeppoon in the second round of the Super

8’s competition, our coaching staff was pleased with the effort of the boys as they competed

for the entire game and was evenly matched with their opponents in the second half. A slow

start resulted in some early tries to St Brendan’s and it was always going to be difficult to fight

their way back into the game. Playing St Brendan’s is always challenging particularly with a

four hour bus trip to Yeppoon before taking the field against one of Queensland’s best

schoolboy rugby league teams.

Good luck also to Luke McLeod who travels to the Gold Coast on the weekend to represent
