So here we are already in June and at last we can look forward to more clement weather - Spring looks all the more glorious as we’ve waited so long for it this year.

The Horsleys is incredibly lucky to have such a plethora of activities available to the community at the East Horsley Village Hall, including lots of keep fit classes in various forms, Table Tennis, Choral singing, Fine Arts, U3A coffee mornings, Horsley Youth Club, Flower Clubs, Child Health Clinic and many more. If you want to start some new activity now is the time to make that first step. We have a feature for the Hall on Pages 34 & 35.

I can’t quite believe this is our 60th Edition but wonderful to know that we have become such a constant source of information for the locality. It’s always good to be appreciated too and hear that we have made a small contribution to some organisations, one of which is the Horsleys Community Fund. Although the Horsleys is, by comparison with other towns in the UK, a fairly comfortable and affluent place to live, it is not without its problems and lots of people are still struggling, so it’s a big thank you to all of you who have helped raise much needed funds for local people.

A leaky, uninsulated porch is a friend to no one. But a demolished porch replaced by a mini-conservatory = firewood + bricks + glass for cold frames + indoor space for more plants (especially welcome since our greenhouse had to go). “So what do you think?” Anne pointed to her makeshift plan on the kitchen table.I thought we could fit at least a dozen plants on the shelves, plus five trays of seedlings on the floor, and still be able to sit down.That humble pencil and paper outline was the beginning, but it was a long and fretful journey to the finished conservatory. Low points included our builders doing a two-week vanishing act, them breaking the lid on our chiminea on the first day, and failing to put up 90-degree angle walls - twice. The wood and glass conservatory, however, was - and is - spectacular. Mind you, someone else supplied it. And, once the floor was tiled and those tantalising shelves were slated, we were ready to go.The cat was the first visitor to the conservatory and, to

be honest, didn’t seem that impressed (although she didn’t know how much we’d borrowed to pay for it). Operation Hothouse went into action. We started with surprise tomato plants - in that they turned out to be a yellow variety - swiftly followed by Fasold green beans and Kennedy mange tout. The results were impressive, but top billing went to the California Wonder sweet peppers. Never having grown them before, I erred on the side of excess and planted 16. The 12 that thrived also gave us ample camouflage from walkers who passed up the lane.As the peppers grew - and believe me, they grew a lot - we harvested, swapped and even froze a few (depipped and sliced first). And still they kept coming. On rare, hot days, the room smelt like a sweet pepper sauna.I became so convinced of the conservatory’s powers that I brought in the sweet potato plant, which was ailing. It rallied a little, but when it came to harvest time I felt that the label’s bumper crop guaranteed had overstated

the case. Seven sweet potatoes might be good for one plant, but not if they’re all the size of a 20p piece.Naturally, we need to water everything regularly and employ judicious temperature control with the windows. Which also means that flies and wasps are frequent visitors. But hey, that’s nature for you. And it’s a dinner guest or two for the spiders, which moved in almost immediately.Going forward, we want to reduce volume and increase variety (because even home-grown peppers can become a little samey). Chilli peppers are next - I’d love to grow Bhut Jolokia - reputed to be the world’s hottest chillies. Anne is a tomatophile (I like the plants, but can’t stand the taste of the fruit), so we’ll definitely look a mixture of plentiful and interesting.The conservatory has already been nursemaid to a range of herbs and seedlings. It’s not only an extension of the house, but also an extension of our lifestyle. Anne would like more space to sit down in comfort. Or, at the very least, be able to find the cat among the indoor undergrowth.

Short StoryGame, Set and Match

Danny had spent all morning playing tennis on his own against the garage door. He had won nearly every game, and now felt confident enough to take on a real opponent.

His plimsolls stuck to the hot tarmac as he walked along the deserted avenue to his friend Alex’s house. The heat had sent everyone indoors. Even the birds had stopped singing.

He found Alex sitting on the edge of his pond, with feet dangling in the water.

“Want a game of tennis? Danny asked. “You’ll need your own bat”.

Alex grinned and nipped in the shed. He returned with a cobweb covered table tennis bat. It didn’t look at all like Danny’s racket, and he suspected that it might give his friend quite a large handicap, but decided not to say. If Alex was happy, then he was happy.

Both boys agreed that Alex’s garden was perfect for tennis. It had the pond in the middle to act as a net, a shed on one side and patio doors on the other to act as goals.

They had a few practise shots while Danny explained the rules.

“If I hit the patio doors it’s a goal to me, and if you hit the shed it’s a goal to you. If the ball goes in the pond then whoever hit it in has to get it

out and they lose a point”.

Danny knew that when you start the game it’s called ‘Love All’, but didn’t mention this in case Alex thought it was a girl’s game and refused to play.

“It’s a draw if you get juice,” Danny said instead. Alex seemed both confused and impressed.

“Okay,” he bounced up and down. “Let’s play!”

In spite of the ping pong bat, Alex proved a more challenging opponent than the garage door; for one thing he argued over goals. For example, when Alex’s shot bounced off the shed roof, rolled along the guttering and disappeared down the drainpipe, Danny agreed that the shot was a work of genius, but didn’t think it was worth five goals. They compromised on two and a half.

Alex also hit the ball so that it seemed to magically fly straight through Danny’s racket. The ball would then disappear over the garden gate. Danny found that he was searching for the ball in the next door garden much more than he was hitting it. And he was getting hot.

Also, unlike the garage door, Alex constantly questioned the rules. While Alex agreed that it didn’t matter how many times the ball bounced, he

refused to believe that kicking it was okay. Unfortunately this made quite a few of the goals that Danny scored disallowed.

Danny was starting to suspect that this game wasn’t going his way. He noticed that, in spite of all his morning’s practise, he was scooping more balls out of the pond than Alex, and hoped that his friend was not keeping too close an eye on the score.

Eventually, both boys, the shed and the patio doors were covered in dark splodges of pond water. Danny was tired, thirsty and several goals behind. He couldn’t go on much longer, but desperately didn’t want to lose this game.

The patio doors slid open and Alex’s mum appeared, accompanied by the welcome sound of ice cubes tinkling in glass tumblers.

“I’ve made you boys a drink,” she called.

“Brilliant!” Alex threw down his bat. “Game over!”

“What’s the score?” she asked, as Alex slurped his drink.

“We’ve got juice,” Danny said, thinking fast. “So that mean’s it’s a draw”.

Eliot When Cats were merely kittens in Lloyd Webber’s eyes, readers were curling up in a sunny corner with T.S. Eliot’s Practical Cats. Writing under the name ‘Old Possum’ in letters to his godchildren, Eliot’s poems included tales of Macavity, Mr. Mistoffelees and Bustopher Jones. It’s the world’s longest running musical, and most recently gave us the cinematic opportunity to see Hugh Jackman without a shirt on.Chitty Chitty Bang BangIan FlemingChitty Chitty Bang Bang: The Musical Car was written by Ian Fleming of James Bond fame, who penned the original three-part series for his son. The idea has to be every child’s dream: a flying car. Inventor Caratacus Potts restores a second-hand vehicle and he and his children name it after the sound of a backfiring engine. It soon becomes clear that Chitty isn’t your average automobile and the family embarks on an adventure that involves kidnap and gangsters, cross-channel flying and some bizarre characters. When Chitty made it to the West End, audiences poured in to see the flying car in all its glory.Oliver TwistCharles DickensFagin told his boys they ‘gotta pick a pocket or two’ and

composer Lionel Bart picked more than an idea or two from Dickens, transposing the Victorian London of Oliver Twist to the stage, along with the wonderful characters of Twist himself, lovable rogue The Artful Dodger and simply terrifying thug, Bill Sykes. Dickens’ novel opens with Twist enduring life in the workhouse before being taken on by an undertaker. He escapes, only to fall in with Fagin’s gang of pickpockets. The book’s a lot darker than the musical with the brutality of the streets along with the poverty and drudgery of many of London’s lower classes portrayed vividly.

Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West - Gregory MaguireWritten in 1995, Maguire’s novel is set in the land of Oz, way before Dorothy and Toto follow the yellow brick road. Elphaba is a girl who was born green, with sharp teeth and a disagreeable temperament. In Maguire’s vision, Oz is imaginatively recreated, with all its Technicolor splendour practically seeping from the page. But there are sinister goings on, adult themes and a not-so-happy-ending .The young Elphaba soon learns that it’s really not easy being green.

This is part of our series of articles discussing tax planningat certain periods of life.This article looks at some tax planning opportunities which are generally available to all property owners.

MAIN RESIDENCEAny gain you make on sale of your ‘principalprivate residence’ (PPR) is normally exemptfrom capital gains tax. If you only have onePPR then provided it was always your mainresidence all the gain is exempt. To cover delays in sale, you can also exempt the lastthree years even if you were living somewhere else.

If you have more than one residence, it isvery important that you tell HMRC whichone you want treated as the main one. Thiselection has to be done within two years ofhaving two residences. Once made it can alsobe changed – which can mean making gooduse of that three years at the end of ownership! If you do not make an election,you cannot change it and effectively HMRCwill decide which the main residence is at anytime.

If you rent out your home (or part of it) thenthat portion of the gain may be subject tocapital gains tax. There is an additional reliefhere as up to £40,000 of that gain may be exempt as well provided at least that amountof normal PPR relief is due.

This should be a simple relief, but as soon asyour circumstances are anything but straightforward it has some serious complications. If you have more than one residence, let itout, or there is any change of ownership(even, or perhaps especially, between husbandand wife) it can be full of seemingly strange rules.

RENT-A-ROOMIf you let out one room in your residence asfurnished living accommodation, you can ignore the first £4,250 of rent you receiveand only pay income tax on anything overthat. Of course, if you choose to be taxedthis way you cannot claim any expensesagainst the rent.

WORKING FROM HOMEIf you work from home, you can claim a portion of household bills as an expense forincome tax. If you are an employee, it has tobe a requirement of the employer that youwork that way, but for the self-employed it israther easier.

It is important that no part of the home isexclusively used for business as that wouldexclude the PPR relief. So it is a good idea to restrict the expense claim to a percentageof a room (which is the reality in almost allcases anyway).

RENTING OUT PROPERTYIf you rent out a property as a landlord youcan claim all the expenses: loan interest, re-pairs, etc. What is often not appreciated isthat the loan interest does not have to be ona loan to buy the property – if you owned itbefore letting it out you can refinance theproperty and claim relief on a loan up to thevalue of the property when you first let it.

For residential accommodation, there is aspecial allowance of 10% of the rent for furnished lets. This replaces any repairs or replacements of furniture and is often veryvaluable. However, it only applies to furnishedaccommodation and it must be furnished so itcould be lived in – a few furnishings is notenough.

Of course, any of these steps have to bedone correctly to ensure they have thedesired tax advantages.

Mercedes-Benz World will this year create the perfect setting for the annual Classic Wheels and Fun Day on Sunday 9 June.

The new venue will allow over 500 Classic Cars and motorcycles to be displayed, offering one of the largest shows in the area, with trophies to be won for Best Car and Best Motorcycle. “The afternoon will be packed with entertainment and activities, and there’ll be stalls, music and ’adrenaline’ activities for the kids,” explains event organiser Sue Spencer. “It’s the perfect day out for all the family and there’s also a bit of retail therapy to be had, as the Hospice shops will be selling clothes, accessories and collectables at bargain prices,” adds Sue.

Those who prefer a challenge should return to Brooklands on 21 June for the Midnight Walk. Hundreds of women of all ages and abilities join every year to walk the 8 mile circular route, and there’s a real carnival atmosphere when groups of ladies take to the streets at 10pm. Last year over £130,000 pounds were raised through this sponsored walk. You can pick up your registration form in store.

Along with the money raised through events, the Hospice generates a large part of its funding through retail. The Hospice shop in East Horsley opened a couple of years ago, and has been greatly received by the local community. “We’re so thankful for all the wonderful donations that people bring us, and hope it’ll continue as every penny counts when it comes to the Hospice,” says shop manager Mary Richardson. She’s currently recruiting for volunteers to help out during the summer, and students over the age of 16 are especially encouraged to apply if they’d like to gain some work experience, whilst helping their local charity. The Horsleys Community Fund is growing thanks to your donations; we now have nearly £80,000 in the endowment fund and have been able to give over £7500 in grants to local groups from the interest generated. Over the last three years we have received donations from £5 to £5000 and are truly delighted with each and every one we receive. The fund has been significantly enhanced by the addition of government matching , gift aid and the strong investment performance of the fund recently... your donation goes a very long way and is such an effective investment in the future of your community.

However, a wise man once said that an organisation’s fiercest competitors were “Do Nothing” and “Haven’t heard of you”...

Thanks to the wonderful Horsley Directory we are confident that there is no one in the Horsleys this year that hasn’t heard of the Community Fund! We have also been fortunate enough to have been helped with support from Gascoigne Pees, the Drift Golf Club, the Horsley Sports Club and the Parish Councils to name a few.

We are still able to secure government funding for any donations received, for example a donation of £100 turns into £175 with gift aid and this money works in perpetuity to produce income for our community…

1. Eilean Mòr, Outer Hebrides - All three of the lighthouse-keepers on Eilean Mòr in the Hebrides disappeared on 15 December 1900, leaving behind their oilskins, a table full of food, and the light prepared to be lit. Why or how the men vanished will never be known.

2. Newhaven, East Sussex - Lord Lucan’s car was found at Newhaven three days after he disappeared from his London home, where the family’s nanny had earlier been found murdered. Despite several unconfirmed sightings across the globe, Lord Lucan was never seen again.

3. Seaton Carew, Cleveland - John Darwin infamously ‘disappeared’ while canoeing off Seaton Carew in 2002. Having been declared dead, in 2007 he walked into a London police station claiming no memory of the last five years – but when a photograph surfaced of him and his wife shopping for properties in Panama in 2006 their hoax was discovered.

4. Sunningdale, Berkshire - Agatha Christie disappeared from her home in Sunningdale in December 1926. She eventually reappeared at a hotel in Harrogate eleven days later, unable to give any explanation for her disappearance. She was later diagnosed with amnesia.

5. The Tower of London - The fate of the ‘Princes in the Tower’ remains one of the most alluring mysteries in English history. Imprisoned in The Tower of London in 1483 by their uncle, Richard III, securing his claim to the throne, there is no record of the princes after this date.

Kit or bespoke?Kits tend to be cheap and DIY-friendly, as most of the parts (usually a PVCu frame and polycarbonate roofing) are pre-cut and pre-drilled ready for installation. Bespoke designs will cost more, but you’ll have something tailored to your individual requirements. Size, siting and aspectFor a useable room allow at least 8-10 metres of floor area and consider how the space will complement your property and garden. How will your conservatory adjoin the house? Is there a large enough exterior wall, and will you have to avoid obstructions such as trees or outbuildings? Try to place it facing east or west, as north-facing conservatories tend to be cold, while south-facing ones can overheat.Walls and framesTraditionally, conservatories are built onto a 600mm high ‘dwarf’ wall made of brick or stone, to match or complement your house. More recently, fully-glazed structures have become fashionable, offering a contemporary look and even more light. The most popular choice for the wall framework is PVCu, a material that is light, strong, requires little maintenance and can be system-built quickly and easily. Bespoke conservatories are generally made in hardwood, which can

be carved into slender, intricate designs and suits older properties, though it is more expensive and requires regular maintenance. GlazingDouble or triple glazing is essential and the best glazing combines a low-emissivity coating that reflects heat back inside, and argon-gas filled units for maximum insulation. In a bespoke conservatory, you can specify tinted, etched, obscured, anti-sun, fire-resistant, self-cleaning or other specialist glass at a price. For roofs, choose from glass or polycarbonate panels. The latter are light and strong, cheap, and quick and easy to fit, but tend to obscure light, particularly at thicknesses that achieve the same thermal performance as double glazing. Near trees, they may also suffer from algae growth.HeatingHeating is essential and, to comply with building regulations, it must be independent from your main system. You could place radiators against the dwarf walls or install under-floor heating, either warm-water pipe or electric cable, or you may consider electric trench heaters, hidden under grilles around the edges of the floor. Where there’s room for a chimney or flue you can install an open fire on the wall that was the outside of the original house.

VentilationIn the height of summer you’ll need a cool waft of air. Roof vents may be opened manually (with long-armed winding gear) or electrically, or may even be thermostatically controlled to open and close at the necessary time. Trickle vents in the roof or side windows are useful, allowing warm air to flow out as necessary. You may also wish to add a central ceiling fan.ShadingBlinds ensure privacy, provide shade from direct sunlight and reduce the build-up of heat. If heat is a problem, try solar-reflective roller blinds. Otherwise, the options include pleated fabric, pinoleum Roman blinds and slatted Venetian blinds. Take your time choosing a look that’s right for you; consider how easy they are to clean and whether you want to open and close them with pull-cords, rods or via remote control. Some of the most useful travel gadgets are the simplest. The TanSafe is a great example: it looks like a standard bottle of sun cream, but it’s a secret safe that’s big enough for your cash, cards, keys and even your mobile phone (but not a phone case). Some of our favourite technology solves problems we thought were with us forever - such as creased shirts. How attractive it is depends on how much you hate ironing: a travel iron will set you back around £10, while a portable garment steamer such as Rowenta’s DR5050 promises to unwrinkle anything for £30.If you’re travelling with children, there’s no shortage of technology that can keep them amused on even the longest trip. Apple’s iPad Mini is ideal, providing all the fun of an iPad without the

weight or price, but it’s still quite expensive at £269; an iPod touch does much the same thing in a smaller case for half the price, or a quarter of the price if you’re buying used. If you prefer Android tablets Google’s Nexus is a good buy at £159. All of these devices can run apps, and you can copy video from your computer or buy or rent videos from wherever you can find an internet connection. We’d advise against 3G devices that connect to the mobile phone network: there are often very high charges for data roaming.The problem with many travel-related gadgets is that they can be very large and very heavy - and that’s terrible if you’re trying to keep everything in a single suitcase that doesn’t exceed the airline’s weight limit. For example, a wireless speaker such as the Supertooth Disco weighs a massive 1.1kg, and it’s a hefty size too. When it comes to travel speakers, small can be beautiful: the £18 X-Mini II Capsule speaker weighs just 82g but it punches way above its weight. It doesn’t sound as good as a top-end

speaker system but it’s a vast improvement on any smartphone’s speakers. If size really does matter, you can even cut the size of your plugs - but beware, because it can be pricey. The Mu Folding Plug is a 3-pin plug with a USB socket on the other side, and it folds down to a titchy 1.4cm - but at around £25 for one, it’s considerably more expensive than standard plugs. Now that we’re travelling with lots of gadgets, powering and/or recharging them can be a problem: it’s not unusual to have a camera, an e-reader, a smartphone and a music player competing for the same plug socket as the TV or hairdryer. Rather than packing multiple chargers or 4-way extension leads, it might be a better idea to invest in a 4-port worldwide travel charger, which comes with 4 USB ports in the top and a collection of interchangeable plugs that work almost anywhere in the world, all for around £10. Such chargers aren’t powerful enough for iPads, which draw massive amounts of power, but they’re fine for smartphones, cameras and other popular bits of kit.

Camping on a Budget

If the luxury of an overseas holiday is just not going to be affordable for you this year, you probably don’t want to spend a fortune in this country either. However it doesn’t mean you have to go without a break completely because camping can be great fun and very affordable.You can’t just put the TV on, there are no computer games for the children and your time is spent exploring forests and cooking outdoors. It makes for a wonderful family bonding experience completely unlike renting a holiday home, and is lots of fun if you can find a group of you to go.There’s a huge retail market around camping, and an hour on one of the many equipment websites could have you thinking that the whole event is going to be far too expensive, especially if you aren’t sure if you’ll do it more than once. It doesn’t have to cost the earth though.Firstly the tent. Take advantage of somebody else’s impulse buy by visiting secondhand sites to see what you can snap up - Ebay of course, but also Gumtree have plenty for sale. Sleeping bags might be

necessary if you are hiking across the mountains, but chances are you’ll be driving to your camping site so take your own duvets and pillows with some old covers and that will be perfectly adequate. A night’s sleep on the hard ground isn’t comfortable though so you’ll need to find something to lie on. Cushions from outdoor chairs or a beach lilo will be good enough for children, but you might want to invest in an inflatable mattress for the adults.Other equipment such as a gas stove, water containers and plastic plates might be offered to you if you put a wanted advert on Gumtree or on Freecycle. And a polite plea to your friends could produce a surprising haul for you to borrow.You might not be able to look your glamorous best while camping and really, why would you? It’s time to get back to nature. However, it doesn’t mean you won’t want to clean up every day and proper toilet facilities are a must. Fortunately, these days all but the most rural sites will have a shower and toilet block. The internet will help you decide which site to go to.

For example www.pitchup.com has 5000 UK and Ireland sites listed and it allows you to filter the features that are a ‘must’ for you and those that are a ‘nice to have’. For example you might want to visit a site that allows children and dogs (or doesn’t), has wifi access, or where there are cycling facilities nearby.Still not convinced? If you think this sounds like more hassle than it’s worth, you might want to consider ‘glamping’. It’s still sleeping in an open area surrounded by trees, but the living accommodation is provided for you. Many sites offer tipis, yurts, wooden huts or even a gypsy caravan.This is going to cost more of course but is still very affordable. For example a week in early July in a tipi in Mid Wales would cost £550 for two adults and two children. The bed and bedding for the adults is supplied as well as futons for the children. You are also given your own cooking and toilet facilities.Remember, you won’t be the only one looking for a cheap summer break, so go online and book your pitch now.

For many older people Patricia’s success will be the spur to launch their own professional stage careers. Others may be encouraged to join an amateur theatre group.Peter Bressington helps to run the Lindley Players, an amateur theatre society with 350 members based in Whitstable, Kent. He says that the group is always looking to recruit members of all ages, but he is aware that many people are put off by open auditions: “If people are nervous about performing they can become involved in other ways, such as selling ice creams or painting scenery.”In order to understand the level of commitment required, Pru Page, Club Secretary of Bocking Theatre Club in Essex, recommends that new members have their first experience of being on stage as part of the chorus of a pantomime or summer show:“New members should be prepared to learn lines and take part in regular rehearsals but some are shocked by the amount of time they have to dedicate to the production.”

Pru says that learning a theatre role can be stressful for older people, whose memories may not be as effective as they once were, but she believes that the more her members become used to it, the easier it becomes. She also recommends the social aspects of joining a theatre group: “I’ve met some of the best friends I’ve ever had through the club. Once you’ve shared a dressing room with someone – not to mention a few production disasters – you can’t help but become close.” If amateur theatre doesn’t appeal, or if you already belong to an amateur group and want to go professional, then what’s the best advice?A course at an accredited drama school (list available from www.dramauk.co.uk) is probably the best option if you want to go professional.Many drama schools will take mature students for courses that last between one and three years. During that time you will work intensively on voice production, movement and acting. You’ll need an open mind and a willingness to step

out of your comfort zone. If student life is not for you, you can try approaching actors’ agents directly, but before you begin your search you will need a set of high-quality portrait shots. Be prepared for rejection unless you have a unique ‘look’ that lends itself to character roles. Even then you may find yourself auditioning for TV ads rather than strutting the stage at the National Theatre.Those who are lucky enough to be taken on by a reputable agent can expect to pay commission of around 10%-12% on each job. Actors usually have to pay their own travel expenses to attend auditions and purchase a subscription to online casting directory The Spotlight.However, the performers’ union Equity claims that at least two-thirds of actors are out of work at any time. With so much unemployment in the performing arts, the dream of taking up a professional stage career can often turn to dust, so it’s reassuring to know there’s always a local amateur company ready to give you the chance to tread the boards.

Jaguar F-TypeThe E-Type replacement has taken 50 years to arrive – can it live up to the legend?

What is it?Quite simply, the most important Jaguar for more than 50 years. Not since the iconic E-Type has Jaguar launched a new model into this segment, and boy has the wait been worth it. The stunning F-Type is the British manufacturer’s new halo model – a high performance, two-seater convertible that’s charged with ‘changing the face of the brand’. Buyers are queuing up for them, with a six-month wait already in place, and that’s before any of them have driven it. What’s under the bonnet?There are three different models – the F-Type, F-Type S and F-Type V8S. The first two are V6s and the latter, obviously, a V8. All units are supercharged. The standard F-Type has a 3.0-litre V6 with 335bhp, 450Nm, hits 60mph in 5.1s and tops out at 161mph. The middle of the range F-Type S hits 60mph in 4.8s and cracks 171mph thanks to 375bhp and 460Nm. The range topping 5.0-litre V8S has a frightening 488bhp, 625Nm and tops 186moh with 60mph dispatched in 4.2 seconds. They all feel rapid and sound absolutely incredible thanks to an exhaust system which took 18 months to develop.What’s the spec like?Highlights include the eight-speed automatic gearbox (standard), the multi-adjustable sports seats, and Meridian

sound system. There are some brilliant design touches too – like the central heater vents that rise out of the dash when you turn the air con on. And the deployable door handles that pop out of the bodywork. Ian Callum we salute you.Any rivals?Yes, several. But the biggest – the Voldemort of the Jaguar world (dare not speak his name or he’ll grow stronger) – is without doubt the Porsche 911. Jaguar benchmarked the German rival in all areas of the F-Type’s development. Other notable foes include the Audi R8 and Aston Martin V8 Vantage. All cost considerably more than the equivalent Jaguar.What’s it like to drive?Incredible. This is a drivers’ car through and through. We spent plenty of time in all derivatives and loved the crisp steering, the rapid eight-speed paddle shift box and the sound. Under acceleration all versions sound brilliant, and fizzle, crack and pop on the overrun. It feels a lot lighter than it looks – with extensive use of aluminium in the construction helping here. On the track it’s nimble and involving and huge fun while on the road it’s nothing short of intoxicating. We’d go as far as saying this is the best driver’s Jaguar ever.LightweightThe 50:50 weight distribution is key to the way the car feels.

Engineers even moved the windscreen washer bottle to the rear to save 7kg from the front end. Some 50 per cent of the aluminium used is recycled – the bonnet alone is made from 26,000 drinks cans.SalesOf the 74m cars sold worldwide last year, just 0.6 per cent of them were sports cars. The US will account for 45% of sales, UK 25% and Germany 23%. Some 90% of buyers will be new to Jaguar.The verdictIt’s the car of the year, without a shadow of a doubt. Our pick of the range would be the V6S – it’s just as much fun to drive as the V8, sounds just as brilliant, and the peaky power delivery is stunning. But the real coup is the pricing – every model is 25 per cent less than the equivalent 911, its bitter rival.

Framed by the holy peak of Fishtail and the snow-capped summits of Annapurna, Pokhara sits on the banks of Fewa, the second largest lake in Nepal. Nestling like a gem among rice terraces and forested slopes, its deep waters are forever changing from silver to emerald and blue, now as smooth as glass, now whipped up by a sudden breeze.‘In all my travels in the Himalayas,’ wrote a Japanese Zen monk, ‘I saw no scenery so enchanting.’ He was the first foreigner to enter the valley and to this day, few would dispute his judgement. On the north side of the lake, the land rises from 3000 feet to over 26,000 in less than 20 miles as the crow flies. Add a pleasant climate, an abundance of sub-tropical fruit and flowers and it’s no wonder that lakeside Pokhara has grown into the loveliest resort around. Just a 20 minute flight or so from Kathmandu, it’s an idyllic escape and you don’t even have to trek to enjoy the scenery.Here, from morning to dusk, gaily-coloured sails and dug-out canoes paddle across the water in search of solitude, scenery and fresh air. Egrets

land in the trees along the banks, dragonflies skim the surface, translucent blue. Here and there a lonely fisherman stands motionless, silhouetted against the blue sky while ducks wander in and out of the reeds and laundry dries in waterside meadows bleached by the sun. Nothing disturbs the peace but bird song and the echo of a temple bell. Not so far away, pilgrims laden with offerings head for a sacred island, their colourful saris beautifully mirrored in the lake among the shimmering reflections of glaciers and snowfields.Meanwhile along the shore, traders set up fruit stalls under the pipal trees and mobile kitchens turn out delicious chapattis in minutes. There are no buildings or roads on the main waterfront as the town spreads inland, its traditional houses with warm orange bricks and carved balconies jostling for space among multi-roofed pagodas and shrines, open-fronted shops and tea stalls where men gather in the shade to put the world to rights. Prayer flags hang across the streets, baskets and copper pots spill out on the verge, together with cotton shirts, bright Nepali sweets, Tibetan carpets, silver necklaces and

earrings, bars of soap and trays of votive powder as vivid as a painter’s palette. Holy men offer their blessings for a few rupees, shoe shine and bakery boys do the rounds of the café-terrace. Occasionally a mule train makes it way through the streets in a flurry of tassels and bells, or it could be a flock of Mustang sheep, 100 or more, reluctantly heading for market.Up on the hill top, on the lush southern shore, the World Peace Pagoda keeps watch over Pokhara and its lake. It’s either a bumpy drive or a steep climb to the white stupa and the golden Buddha looking in all directions but up there, the panorama takes your breath away, stretching for 90 miles across the high Himalayan peaks. Yet on the northern side, the dramatic hill of Sarangkot promises an even better view. At over 5000 feet, the mountains are so close you feel you could stretch out your hand and touch their icy peaks. Sunsets are pure magic, lighting up the Annapurna in all shades of pink and gold, glowing long after the valley has been plunged in darkness. They say it’s the abode of the gods and one of the most beautiful places on earth.

Give classic roast chicken a tasty makeover with a handful of fresh sage and some delicious smoky flavoured Italian bacon called pancetta. Look out for thin rashers of pancetta in the deli section of your supermarket or buy freshly sliced from an Italian deli. Serve with roasted baby new potatoes and lightly steamed vegetables for a wonderful summer Sunday lunch.

Ingredients: 1.3kg oven-ready chicken

(preferably free range) 55g butter, softened Few fresh sage leaves Salt and freshly ground

black pepper 1 onion, peeled and finely

chopped 85g smoked pancetta slices

• 115g fresh white breadcrumbs

1 medium egg, beaten Fresh sage leaves, to

garnish

Tip:To make light gravy to serve with the roast chicken, drain off any excess fat from the roasting tin then heat the pan juices until sizzling. Add a splash of dry white wine or sherry then stir in a little plain flour and 1 tsp wholegrain mustard. Cook for 1 minute then gradually pour in 400ml hot chicken or vegetable stock and slowly bring to the boil, stirring all the time. Simmer for 3-4 minutes until just thickened. Season to taste with freshly ground black pepper.

Preheat the oven to 190C, 375F, Gas Mark 5. Place the chicken in a foil-lined roasting tin. Smear half the softened butter over the chicken breast, legs and wings and scatter over the sage leaves. Season lightly with salt and freshly ground black pepper. Cover the chicken loosely with foil and roast in the preheated oven for 1 hour 10 minutes. Uncover and baste the chicken with any juices twice during cooking.

Meanwhile, melt the rest of the butter in a frying pan, add the chopped onion and fry gently for 5 minutes. Chop half the pancetta and add to the pan, frying for a further 5 minutes until the onion is softened and golden. Remove from the heat. Finely chop the rest of the sage and add to the pan with the breadcrumbs and seasoning.Leave to cool then stir in the beaten egg. Press the stuffing mixture into a greased 18cm round shallow cake tin.

Uncover the chicken and top with the rest of the pancetta slices. Return to the oven and roast, uncovered, for a further 25-35 minutes until the chicken is golden brown and cooked through – the juices should run clear with no sign of pinkness when the thickest part of the thigh is pierced. Cook the stuffing in the oven at the same time until set and pale golden.

Remove the chicken from the oven, cover and leave to rest for 10-15 minutes. Cut the stuffing into wedges and serve on a platter with the roast chicken, garnished with the fresh sage leaves.
