Katsura-Hiru
EARTH: 1
WATER: 1 - Strength: 2
FIRE: 1 - Agility: 5
AIR: 1 - Reflexes: 5
TAINT: Innate
School/Rank: None
Shadowlands Powers: Uncanny Speed
Skills: Hand-to-Hand 6
Advantages:
Disadvantages:
The vile creatures known as Katsura-hiru are a common breed of parasite
within the Shadowlands. They are small, black rodents, with long, matted fur.
They bite and scratch at exposed skin, and usually attempt to knock their
victims hat or helmet off. Once this is achieved, the Katsura-hiru will leap
onto the exposed head, and using its long incisors, bore a hole in the head of
the unforetunate victim. Once the Katusura-hiru has found its new host, it will
settle down, and the victim will look as though he has a peculiar hair style.
After several months of feeding, the Katsura-hiru will be in total control of the
nearly useless body. It is common for the parasite to control this body, using it
to find a new host.

WATER: 3
FIRE: 3
AIR: 3 TAINT: Innate
School/Rank: None
Shadowlands Powers: Darkness Unseen, Uncanny Beauty
Skills: Courtier 2, Etiquette 3, Hand-to-hand 4, Seduction 6
Advantages:
Disadvantages:
The feared 'pillow-witches' are one of Fu Lengs most twisted creations. They
appear in all ways to be an incredibly beautiful courtier or geisha, and they are
attracted to sake houses, winter courts and other social places and events like
moths to a flame. The Makura-majo target a samurai, always noble, usually
handsome and rich too. Using their finely-honed seductive powers, the
Makura-majo find their way into the beds of daimyo, generals and hatamoto,
where they are able to suck the life out of their 'partners' in a matter of
minutes. The only known way of telling a Makura-majo from a human is a
thin scar running down the back of their neck, those characters with the
'Lechery' disadvantage receive three free raises to notice the scar.
Mokuzaiaku
EARTH: 5
WATER: 3 - Strength: 4
FIRE: 3
AIR: 3 TAINT: Innate
School/Rank: None
Shadowlands Powers: Blackened Claws, Fear 3.
Skills: Hand-to-Hand 4
Advantages:
Disadvantages:
The Mokuzaiaku are the twisted woodland spirits which inhabit many forests
across Rokugan. Most prefer to simply keep intruders away from their
territory, using simple spells to make the forest seem dark and menacing, or
by tripping trespassers and ripping at clothing with roots and thorns. When a
Mokuzaiaku does appeear, it has chosen to destroy those that are intruding in
its lair. Its body is made of wood, seemingly formed from the broken branches
of the trees of the forest. Its face is usually set in a scowl, and its mouth is
lined with sharp thorns. Its fingers are tipped with large black claws, of the
sort commonly found among the creatures of the Shadowlands.
Although they are undoubtable evil, the Mokuzaiaku seem to want to be able
to live in peace, undisturbed by humans, naga or nezumi. While they tolerate
the presence of the more animal like of the Shadowlands creatures, they will
not allow goblins to enter their forests, as the bakemono tendancy to destroy
anything they can would soon leave the Mokuzaiaku with no home.
Nen-ekiwana
EARTH: 1
WATER: 1
FIRE: 1
AIR: 1 TAINT: Innate
School/Rank: None
Shadowlands Powers: Cannot be killed
Skills: None
Advantages:
Disadvantages:
The Nen-ekiwana are living pits of mucus, they stink of the rotting flesh of
those who have been trapped before. Colonies of the various Shadowland
parasites often live near to Nen-ekiwana, taking the opportunity to feed off
captive victims.
Any character who steps on a Nen-ekiwana is immediately sucked in up to his
waist, and he will suffer 1k1 wounds per round as the vile substance begins to
digest him. The character is trapped for a total of 10 - the number of actions
he spends trying to free himself.
Otokomori
EARTH: 4
WATER: 4 - Strength: 5
FIRE: 5 - Agility: 6
AIR: 4 - Reflexes: 7
VOID: 0 (4 if Otokomori combats his Taint)
TAINT: Innate
School/Rank: None
Shadowlands Powers: Blackened Claws, Blessing of the Dark One, Uncanny
Speed, Unholy Strength, Feed on Flesh
Skills: Hand-to-Hand 6, Language: Rokugani 3. (If Otokomori could combat
his Taint, he would remember the following skills: Hunting 4, Lore: 'Batling'
5, Yari 5)
Advantages:
Disadvantages:
The vile beast known as Otokomori is a terrible sight to behold, its body is
much larger than even the largest Hida bushi, and its powerfully muscled arms
end in hands tipped with huge black claws which it uses to rip apart its foes. A
flap of skin joins ths underside of Otokomori's arms to its sides. Its mouth is
filled with sharp fangs, and its ears are pointed. Otokomori has collected
numerous grisly trophies from its victims; bones, skulls, even flayed skin,
which it wears with pride around its waist.
Otokomori is actually a highly intelligent being, the final member of a
reclusive ancient species of 'batlings'. In an effort to secure the future of his
race, Otokomori entered into a pact with the Dark Oracles. However, instead
of helping him, the Dark Oracles twisted him into the creature which plagues
Rokugan today. Unfortunately the corruption which the Dark Oracles placed
in him prevents Otokomori from remembering his true identity.
Oni no Zokakiken The Oni no Zokakiken are constantly changing, when first encountered they
often resemble a goblin or some other small denizen of the Shadowlands, but
when attacked their apperance changes; they grow larger and more muscular,
they grow extra arms, horns and tentacles. The Oni no Zokakiken are
dangerous foes, for their strength grows as the battle goes on. They sometimes
lead packs of goblins (or whatever creature they choose to resemble) to
confuse their enemies, they sometimes stand back and wait, growing in form
and power as the battle rages around them.

Oni no Toge
The Oni no Toge of the Shadowlands plains appear to be warped thorny
bushes. When an unsuspecting samurai wanders too close, the demon leaps up
to reveal its true nature. Oni no Toge are typically the same size as a typical
bushi, although their bodies are covered in terrible thorns and their eyes glow
yellow. These demons have been known to launch barrages of thorns at their
prey, inflicting terrible wounds. Although Oni no Toge usually fight alone,
they have been encountered in groups of up to three.

Special Ability: Oni no Toge may launch a storm of thorns once per battle.
This is resolved as a shuriken attack against each target in the area of the burst
(roughly 5 square metres around the demon), which if successful, causes 4k3
damage. Any who attack Oni no Toge with a weapon smaller than a katana
suffer 1k1 wounds from the demon's thorny body, while any who attack while
unarmed suffer 2k2 wounds.
Oni no Uma On the vast plains of the Shadowlands there are the Oni no Uma. They are the
height of the finest Unicorn battle-steed, but their skin is a leathery charred
black, and they have 6 legs, with 6 flaming hooves. These hooves are as
strong as the Kaiu wall, and can crush a bushis kabuto with a single kick. If
this were not terrible enough, the fire that surrounds the hooves ignites
anything flammable.
Their other features are very similar to a normal horse, but their eyes glow
red, and the mane and tail are of crackling flame. They can speak, and when
they do so, it is the sound of a roaring fire.
They attack alone, and they are dangerous foes indeed. Fire spells cause them
no damage, however they are particularly vulnerable to water.

The spell Bo of Water has a base damage rating of 4k4 when used against an
Oni no Uma.
Oni no Yamaarashii
Oni no Yamaarashii is as tall as an ogre, with long, thick black claws tipping
his muscular arms. His back is covered in thick, powerul spines, and if under
heavy attack, Yamaarashii will roll into a spiked ball, injuring any who dare
attack. He has a high level of intelligence, and enjoys playing with his
enemies before they die.
He is a dangerous opponent, and revels in the destruction of beauty. He is
known to have a particular hatred for Crane clan samurai, for he was
originally summoned by a scarred Asahina Maho-Tsukai.

Oni no Yuka-ita The Oni no Yuka-ita are a strange demon, they are unable to move, although
their disguise compensates for this. Yuka-ita appear to be a normal wooden
floorboard or stone tile. When trodden on, they reveal their real appearance, a
great fanged mouth, ringed by barbed tentacles which it lashes around the legs

Oni no Kuzuhiroi
The Oni no Kuzuhiroi appears to be a heavily armoured humanoid, slightly
larger than the average Rokugani. Its armour consists of a battered and broken
collection of shoulder plates, helms, mempo and more, often worn in the
wrong place. From the tattered helm and face-mask, two yellow eyes glow,
and the voice which taunts the enemy is decidedly reptilian. Kuzuhiroi
generally carry a heavy no-dachi, tetsubo or dai tsuchi, usually stolen from a
Crab bushi's corpse. Some Oni no Kuzuhiroi have taken to wearing a back-
banner made of the remains of the once-proud banners of the clans.
These Oni have taken to leading packs of braying Goblins into battle, and with
each successful battle, they add to their grotesque collection of armour and
weapons.

a thin purple snake-like creature with long spindly arms and legs will scurry
off into the darkness. No-one has ever found an Oni no Kuzuhiroi outside of
its armour.
Oni no Tane
The tiny creature known as Oni no Tane appears to be in all regards a normal
pip/stone in a normal fruit. In reality, the pip is the egg form of the huge Oni
no Mimizu, and when ingested can complete its incubation period. Shugenja
can detect minute amounts of Taint from 'infected' fruit, but sometimes it is
not enough to arouse suspicion.

Special Ability: If ingested, the tiny Oni no Tane will grow within the gut of
the host at a rate of 6 inches per day until the victim is torn apart from the
inside by a new, juvenile, Oni no Mimizu (the process takes on average 4
months to complete). A day's growth can be prevented by drinking Jade Petal
Tea, but this can only be done for a number of consecutive days equal to the
host's Earth ring, before an equal number of days growth must be endured.
The only known way to destroy an ingested Oni no Tane is to swallow
splintered (not ground) Jade, a painful process which causes (X+5)k(X+5)
wounds to the host, where X is the number of months (rounding down) the
Tane has been incubating.
Oni no Kaeru Lurking in many of the Shadowlands bogs are the Oni no Kaeru. This
humanoid Oni looks halfway between a frog and a human. They have two
long arms ending in three-fingered hands, a cruel claw tipping each finger.
The Kaeru have two strong, long legs, with webbed feet. They are very able
swimmers, and on land have been witnessed to perform a standing leap of 5
ken-an (15 feet) in height. They are 2 ken-an tall, but this is when their long
legs are fully stretched. Kaeru normally sit in a squat, this seems to be a more
comfortable position for them to rest in.
Their necks are wide and muscular, and the large, flat head of the Kaeru is
split by a wide frog-like mouth, crammed with sharp pointed teeth. The Kaeru
have two small nostril slits, and four glowing green eyes, set in two pairs on
the sides of their heads. Thier skin colour ranges from green to a murky-
brown.
They attack in groups of 2 to 5, and this has led me to believe that they form
'family' groups of some sort. They prefer trying to push or shock their target
into falling into a bog, swamp, lake or river, where they have a distinct
advantage. Alone, they are not a great danger to a well-prepared party, but
groups of Kaeru can overwhelm small parties of bushi.

Oni no Kageboushi
This Oni caused many problems in the Soshi family when it got lose. Soshi
Kageboushi tried to create a thing of Shadow as a servant, but he stumbled
down the dark path of maho in his search, and created this Oni. He was hunted
down and hung in Traitors Grove. However, it was too late, the Oni who had
taken his name escaped.
Oni No Kageboushi is a very special type of Oni, being created through maho
and Soshi secret magic, it has a little bit of the stuff of Shadows in it. This Oni
can slip through cracks and slide silently over floors. It feeds on the fears of
others and loves to hound those with a fear of the dark. The major problem
dealing with this Oni is it is completely unharmed by anything but light and
crystal. This makes it one of the hardest Oni to kill. When attacked with a
crystal weapon it likes to flatten against stone walls or rocky floors, anything
hard to try to shatter the crystal weapon. Failing that it flees as soon as
possible when hurt. Any time its fear affects someone successfully it heals
1k1 wounds. It can be bought up above its normal health max but "bleeds off"
the extra at a rate of 5 wounds an hour. When it needs to attack it whips out
shadowy limbs that leave smoking blackened wounds.

Oni no Kyoki
The strange, twisted features of the Oni no Kyoki have a perverse and
unnatural beauty, which inspires loathing rather than admiration. They are
obviously female in form, but they have two large scorpion-like claws in place
of their hands, their eyes are large and completely green, and they have a
razor-edged tail. Their skin is either white or a pastel shade (commonly blue
or pink).
Oni no Kyoki exude a musky perfume, which is highly attractive to humans. It
uses this to tempt bushi into range of its deadly claws.

Special Ability: The musky perfume exuded by the Kyoki causes any
character within range (10m) to drop their weapons and advance toward the
Oni, doing nothing but breathing in the perfume. Characters who make a
simple Willpower roll against a TN of 20 are not affected by the Oni's
perfume. Entranced characters are only released when the Oni no Kyoki is
killed.
Oni no Mimizu
The Mimizu are gigantic bloated maggot-like Oni, their skin is rubbery, and
ranges in colour from a pale green to light brown. These Oni are incredibly
tough, and can take a tremendous amount of damage before they are
destroyed. Luckily, they are vulnerable to fire, and are not agile enough to
avoid it.
Oni no Mizimu attack by flailing their huge bodies around, hoping to crush
their enemies. As the Mimizu have no detectable mouth, it is unknown what
they eat. In fact, this has lead to the theory that the Mimizu are simply the
young of another, even larger Oni.

Oni no Haeoto
The Oni no Haeoto resemble gigantic flys, huge faceted eyes shine purple and
green, and their large black bodies are covered in rigid hairs. It has recently
been discovered that the Oni no Haeoto are the adult form of the Tane/Mimizu
oni. The Oni no Haeoto can vomit a vile sticky, acidic stream over their prey,
before they suck up the putrid liquid; dissolved prey and all. Ratling scouts
have told stories of elite maho-bujin riding Oni no Haeoto into battle,
although the Crab angrily deny this.

This effect lasts for a number of rounds equal to 10 - the target's Earth ring.
Oni no Henshou
Oni No Henshou is a wonder to behold, such beauty just should not be found
in the Shadowlands. Oni No Henshou was a creation of a mad Unicorn whose
name has been struck from history. What is known is that she lost her true
love and her beauty in a terrible fire. Wishing for both back, she turned to
darker arts and Oni No Henshou was born. The Oni took her life before her
clan had a chance kill her.
This Oni has a simple yet effective way of killing; it stuns its victims with its
awe-inspiring beauty, and then drinks their blood. Henshou is fairly weak if
she fails to inspire awe in all of her opponents,

Oni no Okufukoi
The Oni no Hokufukoi is a dangerous opponent indeed, it appears to be a
grotesquely deformed bushi, armed only with a blackened katana. The
Hokufukoi will not attack unless it is attacked first, although it will try to goad
honourable samurai to fight it. The reason for its tactics is quite simple, when
the demon is damaged, it will attack its assailant and if successful it deals
twice the damage it was dealt.
In addition, the dark blade of the Hokufukoi leaves tainted wounds which, if
not healed by a talented shugenja or monk, will fester and cause the wounded
to develop the Taint within 3 days.
If defeated, the Hokufukoi will dissolve to dust, and a swirling grey mist
slowly dissipates with what sounds like a sigh of relief.

If it hits successfully, it automatically deals twice the damage it was
previously dealt by that person. In addition, any wounds caused by an Oni no
Hokufukoi cannot be healed by non-magical means.
Oni no Mumei
This old and fearsome demon has one of the oddest historys of all Oni. By
their very nature, Oni need a name to have a link to and a form in the mortal
world. How this particular Oni came to be can only be theorized, but from
what has been discovered, it is that the name that was given to this Oni got
consumed by the Shadow before if could completely bind itself to this world.
Somehow a link had been made that allowed the nameless Oni to gain form in
this world.
Because of Mumei's nameless state, it has a great deal more freedom then
most. But in some regards it is also weaker. Its physical form is weak at best,
Mumei appears as a misty, incomplete form. What makes Oni No Mumei so
dangerous is its power to borrow someone's name.
Mumei attacks sleeping people and engages in a battle of wills. Every hour,
Oni No Mumei rolls its willpower vs. the willpower of the target. If Mumei
wins, the target loses a point of willpower that can only be regained by a week
of bed rest. If a target is reduced to zero willpower, Oni No Mumei has
borrowed his name and the target gets his willpower back. Treat them as being
a normal Name bound pair (WoSL), except if the victim can win three
willpower tests as per name bound rules he will retake his name from Oni No
Mumei. Otherwise, after Oni No Mumei wins enough tests to gain a
Shadowlands power, it loses the name it borrowed and keeps the power. It can
then go and borrow a new name and repeat the process. Over time, Oni No
Mumei can evolve into a fearsome Oni, and many in later stages get mistaken
for other types of Oni. Oni No Mumei can spawn.

Oni no Oushiza This monstrous creature stands over 3 ken-an tall, and 4 ken-an long. It
resembles a mighty ox, but its size belies its demonic nature. Its skin is brown,
and its hooves are a dull red. Its two huge horns (a total span of two ken-an)
are like massive steel spikes set directly into its thick skull. From its nostrils it
emits a strange vapour, which sends even the sturdiest bushi into bouts of
vomiting and convulsions. Its eyes are pitch black, and it cannot speak the
language of humans, it simply bellows its hatred to the churning skies of the
Shadowlands.
Before a battle its tail swishes slowly as it scrapes the ground with its hooves
in anticipation of the inevitable destruction. Oni no Oushiza, like most Oni,

Bear, Higuma Teju. Falling foul of Kuni Yori's mad plots, Teju spiralled into
a destructive cycle of using his Tainted powers to fight the vile creatures of
the Shadowlands. Teju accounted for over thirty Oni before he was knocked
unconcious and dragged to the Festering Pit. Made an Akutenshi by Fu Leng,
Tejus body twisted into a terrible combination of Ape and Human, his body
sprouted thick matted fur, and his arms elongated, allowing Teju to run on all
fours at speed. Tejus eyes burnt away, leaving two fiery red orbs in their
place. The savage Teju the Inhuman still carries the Great Ono of Higuma, the
ancestral weapon of the Bear Clan, and he puts it to destructive use in the
name of his new master, the Fallen One.
Teju currently leads small warpacks of Ogres and Oni into battle, barking
orders with a terrible fire in his eyes. A master of lightning fast warfare, Teju
frequently leads his warpacks past the Kaiu Wall to terrorise the peasantry.

Itami is an unbelievably beautiful woman, her black hair reaches her ankles
and her dark eyes look like two shards of obsidian. In the last two centuries
Itami has not aged at all, her devotion to Fu Leng was returned with his
favour. The fallen one made Itami an Akutenshi and sent her into Rokugan to
taint the Empire from the inside. She is able to hide her taint completely, an
ability which she often uses to fool the naïve and the inexperienced. Itami
functions best in the courts of Rokugan, although she has to remember to 'die'
every few decades before appearing with a new identity to maintain her façade
as a mortal.
Itami is a dangerous and patient foe, she has been known to stalk enemies for
several years before setting into motion her plans to destroy her chosen
victims. Her fellow Akutenshi speculate over her origins, most say she was
once a Bayushi, although some think she may have been a member of the
Otomo house.

Advantages: Allies: Dark Tensai School
Disadvantages:
Gakusha was once a skilled Fire Tensai with the Phoenix, but he was among
the first to turn to Fu Leng when the Black Scrolls were opened. Fleein deep
into the Shadowlands, Gakusha bargained with Fu Leng himself for the
secrets of Maho. Fu Leng saw the innate talent in the Phoenix Tensai and
granted him the knowledge he sought.
In gratitude to his dark master, Gakusha built a great temple in the
Shadowlands, and to this day he teaches a dark version of the Phoenix Tensai
school to all who are willing to pay the price.
Gakushas skin is charred black, and he always appears to smoke slightly. He
wears flame coloured robes and wears a mockery of the Isawa mon, with the
kanji for maho replacing all of the elements except Fire.

Chuda Meihiko was about seven years old when the Five Nights of Shame
destroyed everything she ever hoped for. Her clan was destroyed and those
few Chuda that remained hunted down like animals. Her parents and about ten
other families were hiding in the Shinomen after those dreadful nights and
hoped to make a living there.
At the age of 18 she was married to Chuda Minobu. He was the only one left
for Meihiko at that time since the practice of maho had made her parents leave
the small group several years ago and Minobu's parents shared the same fate.
Both loved each other dearly and when Minobu was killed by a Crab patrol
Meihiko went mad. She summoned as many undead as she could and did not
stop even when her friends were warning her not to betray their hiding place
to the Crab but by that time it was already too late.
Meihiko was the only one who survived the attack, but this time a voice had
called her far away from the Shinomen. The Shuten Doji of Desire had
realized the strength of emotion within Meihiko and had realized the potential
in the small human form and rather than demanding the ultimate tribute to the
power it granted her, the Shuten Doji took mortal form and accompanied her
on her journey to a place that she would never reach. She became an
Akutsukai in the vast planes of the Shadowlands by herself and when she had
finished she had powers at her command that shook the Earth itself.
Today Meihiko lives in the southern reaches of the Shinomen with a small
band of Snake - she is the last of the old and the first of the new Snake Clan
and with the aid of her new lover, the Shuten Doji, she is about to strengthen
this little band of maho-tsukai. Sometimes poeple see her wandering across
Dragon Heart Plain when the desire to reclaim her ancient lands becomes too
great... anybody seeing her shall be warned: The beautiful lady will be your
death, and if you are truly unforetunate, even your rebirth.

Chimidoro

TAINT: Innate
School/Rank: Mirumoto Bushi 5, Taki Kenjutsu Style
Shadowlands Powers: Uncanny Speed
Skills: Athletics 5, Defence 5, Etiquette 2, Jiujutsu 5, Kenjutsu 8,
Weaponsmith 4
Honour: 0
Glory: 0
Advantages: Ambidextrous, Quick
Disadvantages:
Chimidoro stalks the battlefields, hunting down the heroes of the Empire as a
champion of Fu Leng. Using the Niten techniques he learnt in his previous
life, Chimidoro becomes a whirlwind of steel in combat. Despite his
aggressive fighting style, and his grim determination, there is a glimmer of
sadness in Chimidoro's eyes, and he will bow to the most honourable
opponents before cutting them down in a barrage of sword strokes.
Although Chimidoro's armour, clothes and skin are stained through decades of
blood and gore, he keeps his daisho highly polished, the last reminder of his
life before corruption. Chimidoro talks with a rough, gasping voice, and he
frequently coughs up mouthfuls of blackened blood.
