What Makes NLP Canada Training Different?

When you are talking to friends about NLP, it is important to let them know that you are talking about NLP as it is trained at NLP Canada Training. While lots of organizations offer some form of NLP training, and many make claims to offering quality NLP training, we do things a little differently here.

Originally, the difference at NLP Canada Training was that we offered NLP New Code as it had been developed by John Grinder. New Code was more holistic than other forms of NLP. It could be learned more quickly and applied more effectively because it accurately reflected the balance of conscious and unconscious processes that is natural to people who are performing at their best.

That was a good starting point. We've moved further. We now understand that the integration of body, conscious awareness and unconscious processes is the single most important determinant of performance. We now understand that developing personal integrity is the purpose of all the NLP techniques for rapport, influence and change. Integrity is the heart of sustainable, ethical influence.

NLP Canada Training is both a company and a community of practice where we explore and support the development of stronger personal integrity. Our practitioners use the full toolkit of NLP and related models to make choices about the states they will experience and the directions they will move. They respond to changing situations and challenges by finding their balance and maintaining their integrity. They create change in the world by changing themselves as they relate to the world.

When you train with NLP Canada Training, you will learn the same techniques for observing, stabilizing and transforming relationships that everyone learns who studies NLP. You will find that these techniques only achieve the results you want when you consistently work on your own integrity. You will know what to practice so that you can keep it together through challenging times and enhance the results you get when times are good.

Introducing: NeuroLeadership PracticesA New Certification for Spring 2013

Once you have taken an NLP Practitioner certification at NLP Canada Training, you know that the heart of influence is your ability to support your own state, energy and intention. When you are clear on what you want and the state in which you want to achieve it, you are more likely to have the influence you want. The certification gives you skills for recognizing and transforming your own state and responses and managing the ways that you are being influenced by elements in your environment or by other people.

As a Master Practitioner trained in Influence One to One, you learn to become more skilled at recognizing and adapting to different patterns of thoughts and behaviours. You develop enough skill so that you can easily flow through different phases of a coaching or influence process while maintaining a natural momentum in your connection. You get better at both recognizing and developing strategies in yourself and your clients. This gives you increased flexibility in building resourcefulness and creating new choices.

With this flexibility, you are prepared to deal with any one person. But what happens when you are working with a couple, a team, a group, or a large roomful of people? In May 2013, NLP Canada Training will introduce a new, Master's-level certification in NeuroLeadership Practices. We'll build on the competencies of the NLP practitioner and master certifications to allow you to achieve better results when you are working with more than one person at a time.

Our new course addresses the aspects of leadership that are important when you are face to face with groups. You want to be as good with groups as you are one-to-one whether you are a coach building your practice through speaking and workshops, a facilitator who regularly runs meetings or training, or a manager who wants to get better results in meetings.

There is very little training in how to lead groups that is good enough to influence people who are already competent at speaking, training or facilitating. Traditional models of training focus on presentation skills or on content development. There's a better way. What if we apply what we know about how people's brains and minds work to accelerate the development that usually comes with leadership experience?

Page 9: THE HOPE SYMPOSIUM 2012 - NLP Canada Training Inc.THE HOPE SYMPOSIUM 2012 Influence Through Integrity NLP Canada Training, Inc. ... In your registration kit, you will find a pad

NeuroLeadership practices are tangible, repeatable behaviours that achieve results by applying what we know to be true about the way neurology functions. Neurology describes the whole information processing system that includes physiology, the senses, and the coding and creation of sensory information through reasoning and imagination. Understanding how people connect their experience in the room to the experiences that are already stored in their brains is a first step to getting better results with less resistance.

Leadership skills begin with knowing how to recognize, maintain or transform your state so that you notice the right information and respond to it effectively while maintaining your energy and focus. The primary question a leader needs to answer is this: how do I set up conditions in myself and the environment that support an optimal state while I am in front of the room? Of course, leaders must also be able to change or recover an optimal state as conditions in the room shift.

Training in building and maintaining an optimal state uses a leader's past experience to create a model of what must be present in the environment, in thoughts, in perceptions, and in physiology (the last three are all processed in neurology) to support an optimal experience. That model can be tested and strengthened through exercises. The leader becomes accustomed to moving in and through the conditions that support the best setting of outcomes and the best performance in achieving them.

The next step in improving leadership performance is to consider the best way to set the stage for success. Setting the stage involves managing the flow of thoughts and states in the group in the same way that traffic flow might be managed by strategic placement of doors or furniture. In psychological terms, priming sets up certain reactions outside of the conscious awareness of participants. In NLP terms, the way you frame an experience is often invisible to participants and is therefore a powerful way to set them up to notice some things and ignore others. Once a group moves into a frame, they are likely to experience less resistance and more active participation in the ideas or events you present. Identifying common elements in the way you have successfully set frames for groups gives you a powerful boost in setting the stage for success in the future.

Page 10: THE HOPE SYMPOSIUM 2012 - NLP Canada Training Inc.THE HOPE SYMPOSIUM 2012 Influence Through Integrity NLP Canada Training, Inc. ... In your registration kit, you will find a pad

It is necessary to get a group moving through discussion or actions and that involves knowing how fast the group can move and where you are within a given time frame. Both of these concepts are rooted in neurology. The first has to do with how people categorize and group information so that they can perceive patterns. The second has to do with the complexity of the way the brain processes time. Managing time is one of the tasks that human beings regularly complete without having the processing power to understand how they do it. You don't have to understand the physics of flight to throw a ball towards a target, and you don't have to understand how the brain processes time to become better at managing the way a group progresses. It is possible to work through practice to get better at noticing when you are successful in moving a group through time and what to do when the group and the leader are out of sync.

Sometimes groups get out of sync because some or all of them are resisting the leader's message or methods. The first step in managing resistance is to manage one's own state and outcomes. It's hard not to give in to fight, flight, or freeze, but it's possible when you make a commitment to using whatever a group presents to move that group towards your outcome for them. Then it is time to identify, isolate and transform the resistance using physical metaphors, language patterns, storytelling and reframing.

What all of these techniques have in common is that they work with the brain's natural tendency to apply patterns.

The brain connects related information and stores it in patterns. It responds to new situations using stored patterns first. If no stored pattern produces a satisfactory response, then the brain will create a new pattern. This is true of individuals in a group and even more true of a group as a whole. Whenever human beings face more complexity than they can process, they approximate using known patterns. Suggesting which patterns to use often works around resistance. Interrupting patterns so that they cannot be used introduces opportunities for innovation.

Managing resistance is only a small part of what it takes to manage group states. NeuroLeadership practices also involve using the wonderfully complicated processes that notice and track changes in other people to monitor patterns of influence in a group.

Page 11: THE HOPE SYMPOSIUM 2012 - NLP Canada Training Inc.THE HOPE SYMPOSIUM 2012 Influence Through Integrity NLP Canada Training, Inc. ... In your registration kit, you will find a pad

Cycling through different perceptual positions makes it possible to identify influencers within a group and either interrupt or utilize their influence to meet your goals for the group. Anchoring states of agreement in the group is an important part of both maintaining a leadership state (by paying attention to what is working) and creating resilience in the group. Similarly, knowing that human brains work in conjunction with patterns in our bodies means knowing that creating physical movement will often allow for movement in emotional or logical positions.

Finally, NeuroLeadership practices involve more deliberate balancing of conscious awareness and unconscious processes to produce faster, more sustainable change and learning. All change in behaviour or thinking requires learning. Neurologically, learning involves coding and storing new patterns or applying existing patterns to new situations thereby enriching them. While we are still learning about how the brain learns, it seems clear that both conscious attention and unconscious process need to be active for optimal learning. While our conscious mind wrestles with data and details, our unconscious minds apply or create patterns that both filter and make sense of the information. Accelerated learning involves offering complex patterns to the unconscious mind through analogies, stories and models. These patterns support the acquisition of information and its integration into behaviour.

Following this logic, the methodology for the new certification is not to flood participants with jargon, science or any other new information. Instead, the course will seed key pieces of information into the patterns that participants are already using when they are successful. We'll also bring into awareness some of the unconscious patterning that is governing their responses in problem areas so that it can be isolated and changed.

Finally, we will be considering the models provided by other people's excellence, including the success in different areas of different participants in the course. The trainers' role in the certification is to seed new information, provide exercises to prompt new attention to existing patterns, and to influence the participants to make useful shifts in perception, awareness and behaviour. We will also set anchors to stabilize individual and group success.

Participants can expect liberal use of metaphors, storytelling, priming and framing to set them up for accelerated learning and successful application of new ideas. This course is going to be a safe way to engage with one's own process for leadership and make shifts that lead to significant improvement. It will be hands-on, intense and productive. All participants must have experience in leading groups and most will be required to have an NLP practitioner certification or equivalent training in human motivation and communication.

The course will be offered in two formats: two consecutive long weekends (Friday afternoon, Saturday and Sunday) or five consecutive days. The first certification will run May 24,25, 26, 31 and June 1 and 2, 2013. Master certification fees will apply, with a discount for practitioners who hold a NLP Master Practitioner certification from NLP Canada Training. We will begin accepting applications in October 2012 for the May 2013 course.

What Makes NLP Different? There are two activities that everyone does every day. We call them soft skills because they have no hard edges: they seep into every behaviour and every part of our lives. We all have to communicate with other people. We all have to work at knowing ourselves well enough to make choices and predict outcomes.

Neurolinguistic Programming (NLP) is training in knowing yourself and other people better so that you can make choices and predict outcomes. Like basic literacy and numeracy skills, NLP skills are essential for everyone. As is also true in English and Mathematics, many people master the basics without any training. They learn because they pay attention to how they get results.

NLP training corrects the imbalances that occur naturally when people pay attention primarily to other people or primarily to themselves. It heightens awareness and offers processes for paying attention more rigorously to more of the way people are relating to themselves and others. The outcome of the training is that people go into many different situations better able to observe, make choices, and predict outcomes.

There is no one field where NLP improves results. NLP goes to the source of results and makes small changes. Depending on what is needed to correct an imbalance, NLP can look like therapy, like communication training, or like strategic thinking. This is confusing in a world where learning has been constrained by labels on quite small boxes. NLP is not something you learn. It is a way to learn.

As you listen to the speakers today, you will probably get caught up in their energy, their commitment to the work they do, or the ideas they put into the room. From time to time, allow yourself to detach and just notice how their efforts to know themselves and other people are embedded in all aspects of their stories.

This is not a conference about NLP techniques or theories. This is a day to celebrate what happens in life and work when people make a systematic effort to predict the results of their choices for themselves and for other people.
