And these were a guarded people by the Great Spirit because they honored the Great Spirit and had respect for Mother Earth. They ate with caution and reverence. They moved through the earth in harmony with nature and with one another.

Silence, Patience and Forbearance were in their foot steps. The wisdom of being and balance of self; the nature of the seasons and lessons of the circle of life was past from generation to generation by the Elders.

The heart beat of Mother Earth resonated through their bodies and became symbols of strength in the antlers, heads and horns of the males.

The young jumped and ran and played with joy. Always watchful, always true to the Spirit of their kind. The favor of the Great Spirit shone upon them, like the morning Sun in the spring, giving Life and Abundance.

The Great Spirit was displeased and decided to watch them from afar. So they could not be nourished by His Love, and to see what they become.

The Pig was loud and sloppy, it was always dirty and reeked of its own waste, which it lay and rolled in. It squealed and uprooted what it couldn’t eat, so that no one else could eat either. It had no respect. It was driven by the want for more. more. more. And what it could not consume, it trampled. So that none other could have.

The first born son of the Pig’s name was “Greed.”

The Cow was clumsy and took up much space and slow of mind. It lacked any ideas of its own. They simply followed others. Only eating and sleeping. Eating and sleeping.

It depended on other Hoofed People for all their needs. The numbers of the Cow was twice any other Hoofed People. They consumed five times the other’s food, water and space.

The father of the Cow’s was named “Lase.” When asked their father-name, they would point and say “He Laze” or “Laze He.” These People are now known as “Lazy.”

The horse was magnificent, strong, fast, beautiful to look at. Amazing to observe. Gallant in all ways.

The horse people were conquerors and laborers. They could not turn down a challenge. For in their heart they thought that, “none are better than us. Who can say they are superior to the horse?”

The pig and cow people used the horse peoples’ weakness to enslave them and because of this weakness they were blinded and did not even know they were slaves. Who can guess the name of the first horse, so strong, so fast, so brave, so wondrous to behold?

The Fruit and Seed that the Creator gave to all had long since vanished from these people: by their own doing. Because these people were so far from the Truth of the Great Spirit; great lies were growing in the hearts of these hoofed people.

It is said that the absence of the Truth among them was the birth place of the first lie. It was in the heart of the pig, cow and the horse. The lie was: “I am as great as the Creator, even greater; and Mother Earth was created to serve me.”

The fruit of these lies grew abundantly. Some of their names were Hunger, Plaque, Drought and Famine. These were multiplied in their land.

But the greatest of these lies was in a dark place that could not be seen, far from the smile of the Great Spirit…the darkness of their hearts.

Chapter 3 – The Hoofed People
Now, there were two friends of the air -- the Owl and Raven. The Owl and Raven were perched on a lone ancient cedar tree on a high hill, where they could see over all the earth. The Raven mocked the Pig, Cow and Horse.

The Owl warned the Raven, that they reaped what they sowed and warned the Raven not to interfere. That this was the will of the Great Spirit and there was hope that these people would turn from their ways and seek the will of the Creator once more. Any interference may have grave consequences.

But the Raven called out, “Oh foolish ones, abundance will never be yours. Why aren’t you like the other hoofed-people across the big waters? For their abundance is without end. They are rich and strong. And you lack and are weak.”

The greed of the Pig and pride of the Horse desired riches and strength. They plotted to take that of the other hoofed people across the big waters. The Cows would simply follow and consume.

When the Raven called and mocked the Pig, Cow and Horse people they only heard with their ears and not their hearts.

For the abundant riches the Raven spoke of was not gold and food; it was the relationship that the other hoofed people had with the Great Spirit; and the abundance of strength was not muscle and steel; their strength was the harmony in which they lived with each other, nature (Mother Earth) and the Creator (Great Spirit).

It came to pass that these two friends -- the Owl and Raven -- became enemies. They were never seen together as friends again. And shared the air no more.

The Raven’s voice was made to say, “call, call, call.” Because it called out and mocked the Pig, Cow and Horse, and told of the land of abundance, where the innocent other hoofed people lived. The Raven was made dark and made to travel in small gangs (usually of three to seven), like formless shadows they move throughout the fields and woods. 42

To this day a group of Ravens or Crows is called a “Murder.” They were destined to scavenge and pick through scraps after the Pig, Cow and Horse people the rest of their days.

The Owl, which observed and was true -- silence in flight was given, and was given the voice that warns the hoofed people across the big waters. The message is, “Who? Who? Who will be true?”

No one knows where the Owl comes from or where it is going. Its voice is heard and its gone as a dream in the night. So it is with everyone born of this spirit.

The Owl which observed and was true, was given a duty by the Great Spirit. The Owl was given the ability to fly in silence and to see at night as if it were day.

Wisdom given by the Great Spirit to the Elders of the guarded hoof people will be viewed as shifting saw-grass in the wind and a path of unspeakable pain. “Who? Who? Who will protect the Seed that is so abundant among you? Who? Who? Who will be true?”

This message struck fear in the hearts of the hoofed people. Some hoofed people thought the Owl to be a messenger of death. They feared and hated the Owl, rather than hear with their spirit the message the Owl brought.

In a few generations the Seed of favor was all but lost. For the ways of the Pig, Cow and Horse corrupted all who looked upon it. It was the enemy that could not be seen.

Many died blinded by those lies. But the Great Spirit kept a remnant that doesn’t reside only in a few of the hoofed people, but can be found in some who were children of the Pig, Cow and Horse.

The Seed was once thought to be in the blood and that one could inherit the nature that pleased the Great Spirit through ones Mother or Father. This new favor is a gift of the Great Spirit to those whose spirit is open to receive it. No longer a right of blood.
