Lesson 1: Moses
• Summary:
– Moses was born a Hebrew slave. He was rescued from the Nile by the Pharaoh’s daughter and raised in Pharaoh’s palace.
– God called Moses to deliver his people from slavery
– God’s name is Yahweh
Lesson 1: Moses• The Israelites were enslaved for 400 years• A later Pharaoh had forgotten Egypt’s relationship with
Joseph and enslaved them.• The Israelites were great in number and had the best
land.• The Pharaoh was troubled by this- thought that if there
was a war, he could be overthrown.• To prevent this, he decided to kill all the male Hebrew
babies.• This would decrease numbers, and male Egyptians
could marry Israelite women and gain land.

• Adoption– It is a gift– The best and most loving option a mother can
offer her child who she cannot take care of herself– There is great love that a family offers when they
accept an adopted child– This choice is life giving

• God revealed Himself to be Yahweh– Means “I Am”– Points to the eternal nature of God– There is no beginning or no end to God– This mystery is expressed in the Glory Be

Lesson 2: Mighty Signs
• Summary:– God sent 10 plagues to Egyptians to teach them
that He is the true God– The Passover sacrifice and meal protected the
Israelites from angel of death and prepared them for their exit (exodus) from slavery. The Passover prefigures Christ’s sacrifice
– In the wilderness, God fed his people manna- prefigures the Eucharist

Lesson 2: Mighty Signs
• God was not intending on being mean by killing the crops, cattle, etc.
• He wanted to show that He was the one true God- no other things were to be worshipped.
• God was just in His actions.

• Passover– Means “crossing over” in Hebrew– Both a meal and sacrifice• The lamb that was slaughtered would have been
worshipped by the Egyptians- very risky.• The Hebrews sprinkled blood on the doorpost as a sign
of obedience to God and desire to be faithful• They ate the lamb in the Passover meal preparation for
their exodus from Egypt

• The Exodus– the flight from Egypt– Freed from slavery to Pharaoh– They were called to worship God in the wilderness– We all live an Exodus journey• We are freed of sin in Baptism to love God in our lives• We also receive manna
– We are God’s chosen people

• Read Paragraphs 15-20 (p37-38)

• God established a covenant with his people and gave them his Law on Mt. Sinai
• The 10 Commandments are binding for all people• After the Israelites sinned, God renewed the
covenant by giving the 10 Commandments again• The Commandments were placed in the Ark of
the Covenant- signifies God’s presence• The Ark of the Covenant prefigures Mary
Lesson 3: The Covenant• Summary:• Mount Sinai, God established a covenant with his
people and gave them His Law- 10 Commandments
• After the Israelites sinned, God renewed His covenant by giving the 10 Commandments to them a second time.
• The Commandments were placed in the Ark of the Covenant- signified God’s presence.
• The Ark of the Covenant prefigures Mary.

• Why did the Israelites wander the desert for forty years?
• They did not trust in the Lord- they witnessed God’s great works, but still doubted Him.

• Israelites were led into the Promised Land by Joshua, Moses’ successor– Prefigures heaven
• Moses was not able to enter, because he did not listen to God– Tapped on the rock twice waiting for water

took over their land while they were enslaved in Egypt
– Before his death, he gathered the Israelites and renewed the Covenant with God

people– Era of judges lasted only as long as needed to
reconquer all their land

• After Solomon died, the kingdom divided• Northern Kingdom- Israel• Southern Kingdom- Judah– Remained faithful to God and King David’s policies– This is the nation that Jesus would come to us

Jerusalem
