WE’LL EAT AGAIN!HOLT COMMUNITY CAFÉ AT THE 1940’S WEEKEND

Holt once again buzzed with nostalgia for the annual 1940’s Weekend, with a huge array of entertainment and events, bringing together a vast number of talents, vintage vehicles, stalls and reminiscence, doing what we do best as a town; welcoming people from all over the country to celebrate an extraordinary era. As a local charity, we were so thrilled and grateful to be nominated as one of the recipients of the funds raised by the town’s efforts, and plunged headlong into the festivities, organising a ‘Taste of the Forties’ refreshment stall on Shirehall Plain, which proved to be immensely successful. The café manned the stall, as well as coordinating efforts at the car park at Gresham’s School, with its superb team of hardworking and dedicated volunteers, who all worked their socks off over a very long but massively enjoyable weekend, helping to raise record breaking funds. The atmosphere in the town was so uplifting, welcoming and friendly, with entertainment provided by the fabulous D Day Darlings, our local outstanding Ukulele band, Winston Churchill, the wonderfully nostalgic singing of Sharon Jiggins, and a great array of vintage stalls, that it really did evoke that wartime era, where people stood together and pulled together, helping each other out and looking out for one another’s welfare; it made me very proud to be part of this town. As evocative as it was, I have to say that my experience of working at the café in Holt has shown me what a great town we have, as that culture of welcoming and looking after one another is very much alive and well today, and we see a lot of it at the Holt Community Café; it is very heartening to experience.A particularly poignant moment was the Memory Concert on the Saturday, performed by the D Day Darlings, with our more senior residents of our town being special guests of honour, and given front row seats, tea and cake, to hear them perform. The Darlings sang their hearts out to our guests as well as the rest of the crowd; they are genuinely lovely, warm people, and everyone so enjoyed having them there as part of the celebrations. Many thanks to all who responded to our invitation to join in. The Holt WI organised and ran the splendid Best Dressed competition, which was great fun and very entertaining, with large numbers of people parading in front of the judges, The D Day Darlings, who did a fabulous job choosing the winners, not an easy task! We had some comedy entries, notably the rather hirsute char ladies complete with beards, as well as some really fantastic vintage costumes. Massive thanks to the WI for doing such an amazing job.

THANK YOU!A huge thank you must go out to all our volunteers who put so much into making the weekend the success it was. Our thanks also to Nina from Nina’s Wine Bar and Jane Arnup from Hayes and Storr, who both provided electrical hook ups for our stall, and without whom there would have been no hot drinks or soup! Thank you also to Crowes for water and overnight storage, and to our friends at the Methodist Church, who supplied tables and equipment, and the Community Centre for helping us out with chairs and urns. And finally, a massive thank you to all those people who supported our fundraising efforts in other ways, by buying our food, supporting the stall and cooking literally biblical amounts of cakes and goodies for us to sell; we are so grateful to you.We very much look forward to seeing where this great town event can go in the future, and being part of the festivities next year.Carolyn BurnChief Operating Officer, Holt Community Cafe

COUNTY COUNCIL NEWSfrom County Councillor Sarah Butikofer

[email protected] or 07968 897235Dear Residents of Holt County Division,What a change from last month its been all go ever since! My report this month starts and ends on a focus for our young people. As many of you will by now be aware, Gladman homes are looking to revisit the site of a planning application made in the recent past for homes south of the bypass in the Beresford Road area. This time their application also makes provision for a new primary school for the town. Whilst I firmly believe the town needs a new Primary School I am concerned if this is the right place for this development given the access available. I would be very interested to know what people from across the town think about this application. I am acutely aware I am your County Council representative, and I want to make sure I am taking your views on this proposal back to County Hall. If you have an opinion either way on this issue please get in contact, my details are at the end of this article.I have also been following up with County Hall on several highways issues relating to the town. Residents will have seen that the consultation process on the new weight restrictions in the Hempstead Road area have started. It is hoped by implementing this that much of the heavy traffic using this route will use the access link from the bypass to the industrial estate instead. Residents have also contacted me regarding the incessant digging up of the Cromer Road by various utilities, particularly considering the fact it was only ‘top dressed’ at the start of the summer. I continue to press the highways department on this issue, to try and find out if it will be re-done once the patchwork is complete. I am also trying to find out when the highways adjustments I paid for from my highways allowance will be made in Weybourne. Finally, I was very sorry not to be able to attend Holt Library on Saturday to give out the medals for the summer reading challenge as planned (due to a medical appointment). This was one of the highlights of my year last year, its such a wonderful initiative encouraging our young people to read over the summer holidays. Congratulations to all those who received their medals and certificates of achievement.Until next monthSarah, County Councillor for Holt Division(Aylmerton, Barningham, Bessingham, Cley-next-the-Sea, East Beckham, East Runton, Gresham, High Kelling, Holt, Kelling, Matlaske, Metton, Runton, Salthouse, Sustead, Upper Sheringham, West Runton, Weybourne)

Office Hours: Monday/Wednesday/Friday 9.00am - 12.00noonMayor Cllr Maggie Prior, Deputy Mayor Cllr Richard Neech

HOLT TOWN COUNCIL MET ON 10 SEPTEMBER 2018 FOR ITS MONTHLY TOWN COUNCIL MEETING.

The Chair, Cllr Maggie Prior, was delighted to announce the winners of the front garden competition as follows:Gold Mrs Margaret BlackshawSilver Mrs Coe Bronze Mr & Mrs FrierUnfortunately, Mrs Blackshaw was unwell and unable to attend, but we are looking forward to welcoming her at our next Town Council meeting. Prizes and certificates were handed out to the other worthy winners. Holt Town Council are still trying to obtain information regarding the scaffolding around Voewood books and the old carpet shop. There have been some issues and in the case of Voewood very hard to access but Cllr Prior is hoping to go on a site visit with a NNDC officer in the very near future. County Councillor Butikofer announced that the Gladman’s site had been chosen by NCC for the new school, town councillors present were concerned that this site might not be big enough and therefore not future proofed but were assured that the studies have shown it to be adequate. Holt Town Council were disgusted that Holt had not been chosen for toilet investment. Some £600,000 has been put aside for updates. This was made worse as the funding comes from car parking revenue and the Albert Street car park in Holt is one of the most financially profitable in NNDC. It was agreed to produce a press release expressing our horror. It was a coincidence that a couple of days later we received a letter from a visitor who was disgusted by the state of the Albert Street toilets. The meeting was informed that the two open green spaces south of the bypass are owned by NNDC and they would be open to a proposal from Holt Town Council for this land. The Council is aware that there is a lack of play provision on that side of the bypass and see this as an opportunity. The sites will be looked at and quotes obtained to see if we can redress the balance and supply something for the young people. The Town Council also agreed to look at a rolling electronic sign that could advertise what is happening in Holt, this could also potentially be used by local traders as advertising space. The Town Council was positive about this idea and it was agree the Clerk would research further. It was agreed that Holt Town Council would purchase a 6ft ‘Tommy’ to commemorate the ending of WWI. Lord Dannant has been encouraging towns to mark this important date in this way and we look forward to seeing it installed in the Memorial garden. The Clerk reported after chasing the Post Office, they explained that a post box wouldn’t now be put at the old Post Office end of town. As you are probably aware this was asked for by our residents and after meetings and site visits it was agreed this would be installed, so we were saddened to hear that cables underground don’t make it viable. If you feel strongly about this, then please email or write to the Clerk and we will see about getting a petition together. Meanwhile we are trying to enter into a dialogue with them to see if we can resolve this. Email [email protected] Just a quick note to let you know that our local Policeman Graham Gower-Smith didn’t get nominated for a Nosca. Apparently, it went to someone in Norwich, however we all thought he deserved it and certainly Holt Town Council would like to record their thanks for all he does for us and Holt. You are a winner in our eyes!!The next Town Council meeting will be on 8th October 2018, at 7.00pm, at Holt Cummunity Centre. We look forward to seeing you there.

minute give away bargains.Quality you can feel!...

After nearly 20 years in Appleyard, Holt, Spirit of the Andes is to close in mid-October.The shop has been a favourite with generations of Holt ladies and those who come from distances to shop or those who holiday in North Norfolk. It is with much sadness that the shop’s owner, Richard Hartley, made this decision when the lease was up for renewal. He said, “We have a wonderfully loyal and devoted clientele, some of whom bought Alpaca and Pima Cotton tops at the turn of the century when we first opened ... and who are

still wearing them today! I would like to thank them for their support and suggestions. It has been a difficult decision to close the shop but it is becoming increasingly more complicated for us trading in a specialist and niche market to

juggle exchange rates and more importantly deal with the rising cost of alpaca yarn. The obvious answer is to concentrate on online sales and save many of the costs that retailers increasingly have to face. So, sadly the shop in Appleyard, Holt, the last of the 14 shops once operated by Spirit, will be closing in early October.” Those of you who can make the journey to Holt before 13th October will find a whole array of beautiful alpaca knitwear from socks to headwear (for men as well as ladies); from alpaca cuddly toys to wooden chess sets, all half price or less. There really will be some never to be repeated purchases and if they last as long as the shop, then they really will be some bargains.

HIGH KELLING GARDEN CLUB

Our first meeting of the season was on Monday 10th September. We were delighted to see seven new faces. The Garden Club plant stall at the High Kelling fete on 1st September was a great success (pictured) and the remaining items were on sale at the meeting. Unfortunately our speaker was unable to attend, but committee members dashed home for a laptop and DVD so we could watch an Alan Titchmarsh presentation about National Trust Gardens around the country. The nearest garden was at Peckover House in Wisbech. Behind the Georgian townhouse, once owned by the Quaker Peckover family, is a fine example of a Victorian garden, whose two acres include a spectacular rose garden, orangery and croquet lawn and many specimen plants collected by the Peckovers. Next time we’re driving west towards Peterborough, it looks well worth a detour to visit. Our chairperson reminded us that the Garden Club was formed around 50 years ago, so we will have a small celebration to mark this at 7.00pm before next month’s meeting on Monday 8th October. We welcome new members and guests so do join us at High Kelling Village Hall on the second Monday of each month between September and May. Our evenings start with tea and a chat, we usually have an illustrated talk lasting about an hour and we hold a small raffle with prizes donated by members. We sit down to our pre-Christmas meal at our December meeting and, during the summer, we have our full day coach outing to a garden or gardens in our region. Please contact our club secretary Tanya on 01263 713974 for more details. Hopefully our club will flourish for another 50 years.

HOLT POPULATION TO INCREASE BY 40% IN

THE NEXT FIVE YEARSDear Caroline,With all the discussions going on about Vitfoss, aircraft movements and Councillor criticisms, I think that we are in danger of missing perhaps the biggest challenge that the Town is facing. We have a population of approximately 3,800 residents, with a lovely combination of shops, businesses and services to match. In February 2015 a planning inspector rejected an application to build another 190 Houses next to Holt Country Park by a ‘land promoter’, because he felt that the social, cultural and environmental features of the Town would be compromised and that basic services would be unable to cope. The ‘land promoter’ failed to acknowledge the consequences outlined by the Inspector, and his single minded pursuit of huge development profits has resulted in a new application. In the next five years, planning permissions and identified sites have already increased the number of new homes by 456 and this new development will raise that number to 566. It means that the population of Holt will rise by a near staggering 40%.It is clear that Holt cannot service this level of development in the short or medium term, and if permission is granted, then we will all suffer for the next 15 years whilst the infrastructure tries to catch up.Has Holt become the dumping ground for North Norfolk District Council chasing Government Targets? Have any of the other Towns in North Norfolk had such staggeringly high statistics?Do our local Councillors realise the damage that will be done?Is this really what we want?It is time for us all - Planners, Councillors and residents to face what is happening and challenge these threats to our lovely TownYours sincerely,Richard Carter

HOLT TOILETSLetter sent to the Town Council and replies.

Dear Sirs,We used to live in Holt and still visit it regularly. We were there yesterday and it so happened my wife needed to go to the toilet when we went back to the car, which was in the Albert Street car park. So she used the toilet adjacent to the car park.Unfortunately, what she found inside disgusted her. One toilet was blocked with

toilet paper and was very smelly, sinks were dirty, there was only one tiny piece of soap and the hand driers were completely ineffective.Overall it was very smelly and dirty and this was mid morning. We feel this is a real let down for Holt and something the council should ensure does not happen.Yours sincerely, Ian & Tina Thompson-Bell

Good morning Mr Thomson Bell, I am sorry to hear about your recent visit to the Albert Street toilets. As you are probably aware these toilets are in the ownership of North Norfolk District Council and they maintain and run them. Holt Town Council own the toilets in Church Street and, although old and dated, we do try very hard to keep these clean and up to a good standard. I am wondering if you would be willing for me to pass on your letter to the Holt Chronicle for publication and also NNDC so they can see what the issues here are. Thank you again for letting us know. Kind regards,Elaine Oliver,Town Clerk

Hello Elaine,Thank you for your reply. I was not aware that NNDC is responsible for the Albert Street toilets. Perhaps this should change.I would be happy for you to pass on my letter to the Holt Chronicle and to NNDC.Regards,Ian Thompson-Bell

1940’s TRAFFIC PROBLEMS

Dear Caroline,Judging by the traffic to the east of Holt on the morning of Sunday 16th September, the 1940’s weekend was very successful, with the station and hospital field car park well utilised, giving visitors to the event easy access to the buses which had been laid on to transport them in to the town. However, siting two bus stops virtually opposite each other on the fairly narrow access road to Lloyd Court, and Kelling Hospital, not to mention the surgery, caused delay and frustration to those of us needing to reach these places in order to visit residents or patients or take people to church etc.Perhaps next year the organisers could improve on the layout of such bus stops.Yours sincerely,Sue Wilding

PARKING PROBLEMSDear Caroline,I moved to Holt at the beginning of the year. In the beginning all was well, even though there was no designated car parking close to Albert Street. Unfortunately, I was unwell on some occasions from April and not able to put my car neither in a long stay space nor park miles away from my home.Immediately the traffic wardens homed in on this, spotting the car and monitoring it like hawks. Any time slightly over a one hour slot or parked slightly on a line and it would be plastered with a ticket. On one occasion I reached my car on a baking hot summer’s day, crammed in as usual to a space on the side of a road, to find a ticket literally glued to the windscreen. I had to have it cleaned to remove this. I tried to avoid all of this but to no avail and no one has listened, not even the County Councillors or our MP. All in all, there have been numerous fines issued, when if there was common sense to let residents park before the busy holiday season sensibly and adequate provisions made for residents, my huge debt could have been avoided. It surely cannot be expected of residents to have to park miles away from their home late at night or for them to keep having to move their car every hour during the day! Nor pay hundreds of pounds for car park spaces, which get full up during busy seasons anyway. Yours sincerely, E Johnson

FUN DAY AT MANNINGTON HALL

Dear Caroline,I would like to thank everyone who, in any way, made our Fun Day at Mannington Hall such a great event, where all ages could enjoy themselves on a beautiful Summer Day.Thank you all very much indeed. I am relieved that my idea, with the help of many other Lions, came to fruition in such a rewarding way. We made £3,800 towards the portable ECG machine for the Jenny Lind Children’s Hospital.Yours sincerely,Liz BowlerPresident, Sheringham & Cromer Lions Club

THANK YOUDear Caroline,Please could I use this column to thank the shopkeepers in Holt, who displayed my ‘Wanted’ poster for the 1940’s weekend, on their shops.Yours sincerely,John Rudd (The Holt Spiv)

THE KINDNESS OF STRANGERS

Dear Caroline,I hope that through your column I can express my thanks to the three people who came to my assistance when I tripped and fell heavily outside the Vinyl Vault on Wednesday 26th September.I hit my face on the pavement and bled rather freely. A couple who had been just in front of me came to help immediately and a gentlemen in a pick-up truck stopped and brought an emergency dressing which was very necessary.I declined calling for paramedics but was able to give my husband’s number at home which was five minutes walk away.By the time he arrived I had been helped to a bench nearby and, whilst still very shocked, was beginning to recover. My husband helped me home and I was able to get ice to my injuries, which were painful but not serious when cleaned up, nothing broken. After a good night’s sleep I am bruised and swollen but unbowed!I would like to thank all three for their prompt attendance and solicitude. I am sorry that I did not see their faces properly but I can remember the sympathy and kindness in their voices which meant a great deal. I hope that they see this letter.Thank you all.Yours sincerely,Teresa Brown

D DAY DARLINGS SUPPORTING THE BRITISH LEGION Rodney Scott, a member of the Holt and District Branch of the Royal British Legion and author of Modern War Poetry, gave an impromptu poetry reading at the recent Holt 1940s weekend. Supported by the D Day Darlings, Rodney recited his Poppy poem that is based on a conversation Rodney had with his late father-in-law, who

organised a local Poppy Appeal. One day, during the unpacking of the poppies they pondered, ‘why a poppy and not a rose’?The D Day Darlings firmly believe, as does Rod, that you should ‘wear your poppy, and wear it with pride, but wear it for the living, not only for those who died’ (R Scott, 2018). Donations arising from the poetry book during the 1940s weekend, helped to raise £201 for the Branch. The book of Modern War Poetry can be yours for a suggested minimum donation of £3.00. Copies are available at the High Kelling Store, The Holt Barber Shop (White Lion Street), The Feathers Hotel and Bakers and Larners. You can also get a copy from the Holt and District Branch Secretary: Lauren Griffiths, who is contactable on: 01263 663178 or 07850 649160, or via email: [email protected] copy can be posted on receipt of a suggested minimum donation of £3.00 and 60p for postage and packaging.

THANKSGIVINGDear friends, Our annual harvest thanksgiving is centuries old. Rooted in the Jewish old testament tradition of offering the first fruits of the harvest to God, giving thanks for the harvest of creation enables us to acknowledge and give thanks for all that we have. Living in Norfolk we are very blessed with an array of locally produced food and drink. Meat, fish, cheese, fruit, vegetables, milk, bread, flour, beer, wine, spirits and even saffron can all be sourced locally. But of course growing and producing food is not without it stresses and strains and those who work in agriculture are not immune from suffering with stress, anxiety and depression. Financial issues, increased regulations, irregular weather patterns, animal sickness, isolation, loneliness, grief, and long working hours can be a recipe for anxiety and depression. That is why this year’s harvest thanksgiving will be accompanied by an appeal to support the work of YANA, You are not alone, which is an east Anglian charity working to promote mental health awareness and support those who suffer with mental health issues in the farming community. Also, while we wish to support the local farming community we also want to help farmers in eastern Africa grow more, and sell more. FARM AFRICA is an international charity working to build a prosperous Africa. Helping farmers in Ethiopia, Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda, produce more food, protect the environment and develop businesses, Farm Africa is transforming the lives of rural communities. In 2017 the charity reached 2.6 million people and helped local people sustainably manage 980,000 hectares of forest and rangelands. Almost half of those suffering from extreme poverty live in sub-Saharan Africa and the majority of them work in agriculture, working with Governments, the private sector and local people Farm Africa is helping to lift people out of poverty. Harvest Thanksgiving is not only an opportunity to give thanks for that which we have; it is also an opportunity to share what we have. There is a real need to reconnect with where our food comes from and those who grow and harvest it, as well as being mindful of the needs of millions of people who continue to go hungry in our world today and the help we can give them. Here in North Norfolk we are well placed to do so.Kindest regards Fr. Howard

FIRST ROUND OF ARTS AND CULTURE FUND GRANTS

AWARDEDNine community organisations, looking to improve health and wellbeing in North Norfolk, have been awarded grants of up to £2,000 each by North Norfolk District Council (NNDC). • Creative Arts East - £2,000 towards the cost of a participatory arts programme for isolated older people, with a particular focus on those living with dementia. • Swafield Village Hall - £250 towards the costs of cinema nights. • Little Snoring Parish Council - £2,000 towards the cost of arts and craft sessions. • Music for Families - £2,000 towards the cost of the Music for Families Project in Briston and Holt. • Musical Keys - £2,000 towards a project for adults with learning difficulties. • North Norfolk Exhibition Project - £1,000 towards the cost of artist led workshops at Cley 18. • Playing for Cake - £2,000 towards the cost of a singing group to improve health and wellbeing (above).• Sheringham & Cromer Choral Society - £778 towards the cost of the Come & Sing workshop.• Sing Your Heart Out (North) - £2,000 towards the cost of wellbeing workshops in Sheringham. Any voluntary or community organisation with a project to improve the health and wellbeing of a community or specific group of residents through participation and engagement in arts and culture in North Norfolk is encouraged to apply to the fund for grants, which are each worth up to £2,000. The grants are not restricted to dedicated arts and culture organisations. Other groups that want to arrange activities such as music or dance sessions, or pottery classes, for example can also apply.Applications can be submitted at any time, with decisions being made in March, July and November. To be considered this November, applications need to be submitted by Friday 26th October. For more information or to apply for a grant, visit https://www.north-norfolk.gov.uk/artsandculture. To discuss a potential application, call the Communities Team on 01263 516173 or 01263 516248.

REMINISCING ON NORFOLK LIFEFruits of orchard and fieldThe late, great Sydney Grapes, immortal Boy John of the Eastern Daily Press, left a story which demonstrated that Norfolk folk, not only spoke differently, but heard differently also.To illustrate his point, he left a story about the great royal houses of Windsor, Balmoral, and Sandringham. At Balmoral and Windsor the public always donated beautiful flowers, but at Sandringham great baskets of gorgeous fruit were bequeathed of which the presiding comestible was always the plum.A survey revealed that this was the result of the Norfolk interpretation of that line in the national anthem which said: ‘Send her Victorias!’ Now, just in case this story is apocryphal, there is another which is unquestionably authentic and in which the jester’s boot is on the other foot. A lady appeared on television recounting her debut in the Womens Land Army here in Norfolk during World War II. The little be-breechered brigade arrived at a particular field where the farmer explained that they were to clear the fat-hen (Chenopodim album) out of the it. Entirely innocent of botanical or scientific name of the weed, the girls set out in search of a fat rogue Rhode Island Red or something of the poultry genus. When the farmer returned later the ladies informed him that they couldn’t find a fat hen anywhere, to which he, with incredulity, responded: “Well, thas’s gro’n” (i.e “Well, that is growing!”) This only added to the girls’ confusion since they interpreted his comment as: “That’s crowing”, searching, thereafter for a fat hen that was crowing! What the frustrated farmer said later can only be guessed at, perhaps: “And there’s a whole army of these silla, sorft mawthers?!”Richard Shepheard

A Lost World ~Briston and Melton Constable My father was a teamsman. This meant that he was in charge of all the horses on the farm, starting earlier than anyone else to prepare them for the day’s work and finishing last. My mother cared for us and also took in washing. We lived on The Meadow and most meat in our meals came from what we could catch. We were luckier than some because we lived with my father’s parents so there was a wage from Grandad and later his pension, 10 shillings (50p) per week. This unfortunately meant I had to share a bed with my grandad! My father set snares around the house and one of my jobs was to cover any rabbits with a tin bath to stop them squealing until father got up to deal with them.A job I really hated was holding a lamp to light my father while he cut the chickens’ throats to bleed them. We reared some every year for Christmas. One year Father reared some geese but they were so friendly that come Christmas, he could not bear to kill them and had to sell them and buy our meat instead.Leslie Kinsley

CREDIT CRUNCH COOKINGAllotment Gluts

I am being blessed almost on a daily basis by generous gardeners, who are sharing their gluts of veg and fruit with me. This week alone I have produced 30 jars of various preserves and have an enormous sack of crab apples to work my way through!A lot of these fruits cannot be purchased, so it’s a real treat to be given them and be able to produce lovely preserves to give as presents. We always serve crab apple jelly with our annual Community Christmas Day Meal at the Community Centre in Holt, and there will be plenty this year!Having been gifted some slightly larger courgettes last week, and not really wanting to make any more chutney with them, I thought I would come up with a really easy recipe that’s just perfect for using them up in a very delicious way. Courgettes need a little help in the taste department, but soak up flavours beautifully, so they are perfect to add to a sauce. This can be made with store cupboard ingredients, so is easy to throw together, and is a great accompaniment to lots of different meals as a vegetable side. Don’t overcook your courgettes, keep a little firmness in them for best results, and if you wanted to be a little more adventurous, you could even add in some chopped aubergine as you are sautéing your veg.For vegetarians, use this as a topping for baked potatoes, with a generous amount of cheese on top, or stir through some pasta. Indeed, if you have leftovers, it makes a great pasta sauce for the next day.Ratatouille1 large or 2/3 smaller courgettes, cut into thin rounds1 white onion, finely chopped1 fat garlic clove, finely choppedOil from the jar of sun-dried tomatoes, or Olive oilTin chopped tomatoes3 sun dried tomatoes, finely chopped2 tsp red pestoTsp Italian herbsSplash balsamic vinegarFlat tsp sugarSeasoningPlace your oil in a deep frying pan, and gently sauté your onion for a few minutes.Add the courgettes and garlic and gently sauté until they are starting to soften, around 5 minutes.Add in your sundried tomatoes, herbs, tined tomatoes, pesto and tsp sugar and stir well.Simmer for around 5 minutes and add a splash of balsamic vinegar, turn down the heat and allow to gently simmer until the courgettes are softer, but still retaining a little ‘bite’ to them.Season and serve.

SMILE TIME!My daughter asked me for a pet spider for her birthday, so I went to our local pet shop and they were £70.00!Blow this, I thought, I can get one cheaper off the web.Local Police hunting the ‘knitting needle nutter’, who has stabbed six people in the rear in the last 48 hours, believe the attacker could be following some kind of pattern. What’s the best thing about Switzerland?I don’t know, but the flag is a big plus. Why did the chicken go to the séance? To get to the other side.

GRAND LAUNCH OF WELLS MALTINGS GOES WITH A BANG!

There was a full house at Wells Maltings on Wednesday 19th September when director Simon Daykin and his team hosted an entertaining evening of events to officially open the £5m arts, heritage and community centre on Staithe Street in Wells-next-the-Sea. BBC Look East came along to film the event which was held to thank funders, staff, volunteers and other key people who have helped bring this far-reaching project to fruition. “What a great day for Wells and North Norfolk; the official opening of our magnificent new multi-arts and community centre,” said Sir Tim Lankester, chairman, Wells Maltings Board of Trustees.Sir Tim also thanked Polly Coke, The Countess of Leicester, (pictured)from neighbouring Holkham Hall, who is Wells Maltings’ overall Patron and who was invited to ‘cut the ribbon’. Only this particular ribbon-cutting ceremony was something rather more dynamic, with theatrical plumes of light and dry ice at the back of the stage.Sir Tim also thanked the project’s many financial supporters, saying: “We are immensely grateful to all who gave to make the project possible, nearly £5 million in total. We say thank you to the Heritage Lottery Fund, the Coastal Communities Fund, the Clore Duffield Foundation and Dr Haruhisa Handa’s International Foundation for Arts and Culture based in Japan.” A showcase of forthcoming events, both on the big screen and on stage, took place in the new 140-seat auditorium and pupils from Alderman Peel High School gave a performance of songs and choral work. There was also a screening of a fascinating time-lapse film, which can be viewed on Wells Maltings’ website, which shows the centre being constructed. All kinds of events are planned at Wells Maltings, with the Autumn Season sponsored by Norfolk Hideaways. For more information, visit: www.wellsmaltings.org.uk.

TOURISM IN NORTH NORFOLK - OVERNIGHT STAYS UP 12%,

VALUE UP £10MLatest annual figures demonstrate crucial

importance of tourism to North NorfolkThe latest set of figures detailing how important the tourism sector is to North Norfolk has painted a clear picture of many more overnight stays and a £10m boost to the economy year on year. The Economic Impact of Tourism report for 2017, published this week, has revealed the following:• The total number of trips (day & staying) to North Norfolk was 8,827,700.• Of these, 8,207,000 were day trips (up 5.8% from a 2016 total of 7,755,000).• And 620,700 were ‘staying’ or overnight trips (up 12.1% from a 2016 total of 553,500).• This gives a total tourism value of £505m (up 3% from a 2016 total of £495m).• In 2017 there were 11,352 actual tourism jobs (or 8,184 full time equivalent jobs). This is an increase of 3% compared to 2016.The 2017 figures also compare well with overall growth in England - the 12.1% increase in the number of overnight trips to North Norfolk is against a background of a 3% increase in the same statistic across England as a whole. The new statistics come as North Norfolk District Council continues to pursue and support projects backing the tourism industry, perhaps most notably the Deep History Coast and Visit North Norfolk’s promotional video campaigns. On top of this, there have been anecdotal reports of bumper figures during 2018 to date, as a reflection of the long hot summer.Cllr Nigel Dixon, Conservative Cabinet Member for Economic Development, Business and Tourism at North Norfolk District Council, said: “It’s really pleasing to see such a strong set of tourist sector activity indicators, especially the rise in overnight stays, it follows a very positive year on year trend. It shows that North Norfolk District Council, working in partnership with Visit North Norfolk and others, and investing in maintaining, improving and expanding tourist facilities, is paying dividends in supporting a key economic sector for North Norfolk.”Cllr Virgina Gay, Liberal Democrat Shadow Portfolio Holder for Tourism at North Norfolk District Council, said: “Excellent news. We’ve beaten the average increase in overnight trips across England by a very nice margin. This is what so many people have worked for.”Cllr John Rest, Leader of the Independent Group at North Norfolk District Council, said: “This is a very positive message to show that North Norfolk is one of the best tourist areas to visit. We are striving to increase our facilities for visitors to enjoy and encourage them to stay longer and increasing our all year round trade, which will offer greater employment opportunities in the District.” Kayla Dunne, Brand Manager at Visit North Norfolk, said: “We are greatly encouraged by the latest report. The fact that the increase in overnight trips is four times the growth compared to England as a whole reflects North Norfolk’s unique visitor offering such as Blue Flag beaches, nature and a wide choice of places to stay and things to do. The trend of holidaying at home, enjoyment of natural beauty as well as authentic experiences, has increasingly attracted people to North Norfolk all year-round and our latest marketing campaign, North Norfolk, Naturally, aims to extend the main visitor season while providing a ‘shop front’ for visitors to plan their stay in North Norfolk.”

DELIGHT AS STEPPING STONES PRE-SCHOOL RECEIVES A GOOD OFSTED REPORT

Fabulous report ensures continued excellence for pre-school children Aldborough Stepping Stones Pre-School is delighted to announce that they have received a Good judgement from Ofsted Government Inspectors. The report is a wonderful outcome for the pre-school and in particular Lydia Pryor who leads a team of 12 staff who are in turn supported by a robust and proactive management committee.Lydia said, “We’re thrilled that our Ofsted report is so good. Obviously, we want the children to be happy, however our overriding consideration is to encourage their self-esteem and self-confidence, so that when they start school they’re raring to go.”Stepping Stones Pre-School is on the same site as Aldborough Primary School and the two work closely together throughout the year to ensure smooth transitions for the children. Aldborough Primary School’s head teacher Mrs Alison Read said: “This Ofsted report is fabulous! It is the

result of tons of hard work and dedication, both from the staff and the committee that underlines how Stepping Stones gives these children the best possible start.”The Ofsted judgement included comments that Stepping Stones was a strong ‘Good’ and displayed features of ‘Outstanding’ practice. This was specifically related to the quality of teaching for communication and language, literacy and outdoor learning. The inspector also praised the pre-school’s effectiveness of leadership and management as one of its key strengths, and also the staff’s quality of teaching regarding the use of books. The children were found to be well behaved, learning to express their feelings and emotions, and developing their independence, friendships and learning, especially through outdoor play opportunities. Committee chair Tina Gibbons said: “We are over the moon at the “Good” outcome. Lydia and the team do an outstanding job. They are wonderful with the children. Particularly impressive is the way in which our key person system enables children to quickly develop strong bonds with staff and helps the whole team to get to know each child’s individual learning needs.” Stepping Stones Pre-School currently takes up to 18 children per session, for children aged 2-5 years. It is open for morning and/or afternoon sessions Monday to Friday during term time between 9.15am to 3.30pm. It also runs an After School Club for Aldborough Primary School every day until 5.30pm. Free taster sessions are available for children and parents. Children of 3+ are entitled to universal Government funding for up to 15 hours or 5 sessions per week. Stepping Stones also offers 30 hours funding for younger children from families who qualify for an early education place.Stepping Stones can be contacted on 01263 768766 or [email protected].

Your legal mattersin safe handsHayes + Storr Solicitors handle a wholerange of family, property and businesslegal matters with care and professionalism.

Wills, Gifts and Legal JargonFiona Hewitt, Director, Hayes + Storr

The main (although not sole) purpose of a will is usually to decide who will receive what belongs to you when you are gone. In other words, it is a gift of your ‘estate’ (everything you own), to take effect on your death. There may simply be one straightforward gift of everything to a relative, friend or charity, or you may wish to make a number of gifts to different individuals or organisations. As lawyers, we tend to distinguish between different types of gift. The legal vocabulary used can seem over-complicated to clients, but the distinctions can be important in the administration of an estate. It might be helpful to explain some of the most common words used in the contexts of gifts in Wills:The word ‘legacy’ is often used in place of ‘gift’ in a legal context, because it relates particularly to a gift (of any sort) in a Will, as opposed to a lifetime gift, for example. A ‘specific gift’ is a gift of a particular, and separately defined, item or asset. This could be a gold watch or piece of furniture, for instance, or it could be a gift of some shares in a company or even the contents of a particular bank account.A ‘pecuniary legacy’ is a gift of an amount of money, such as ‘I give the sum of One Hundred Pounds to my friend Fred’. ‘Chattels’ refers to personal possessions. The reason we tend to use the rather archaic term ‘chattels’ is because it has been defined quite precisely in legislation, which can help to avoid confusion and conflict. A definition of chattels appears in the Administration of Estates Act 1925, and this is the list with which most solicitors are familiar. However, it is rather outdated, with its reference to ‘carriages’ and ‘stable furniture’, and it was amended in the Inheritance and Trustees Powers Act 2014 to mean, for legal purposes, ‘tangible movable property, other than such property which:● consists of money or securities for money - ● or was used […] solely or mainly for business purposes ● or was held […] solely as an investment.’Historians and farmers may be interested to note the strong connection in the past between wealth and agricultural assets. The word ‘pecuniary’ came originally from ‘pecus’, the Latin word for cattle, and, by derivation, for wealth or money. ‘Chattel’ has the same Latin (and Anglo-Norman French) roots as our word ‘cattle’ itself. On a related matter, clients often comment on the lack of punctuation in Wills. It is usual to be extremely sparing, especially with commas and full stops. It may be an old fashioned approach, which isn’t followed by all, but it still has merit. Although a lack of punctuation makes the Will a more difficult document to read, it avoids any possibility of misunderstanding - the ‘Eats Shoots and Leaves’ issue*. So if you find your draft Will or the letter accompanying it contains some unusual language or punctuation, please bear with us, but do make sure you know what it all means. If you are in any doubt, ask us for an explanation. *’Eats shoots and leaves’ - a panda*‘Eats, shoots and leaves’ - a hungry assassinThis article aims to supply general information, but it is not intended to constitute advice. HOLT WIAt our September meeting we had a very interesting talk from David Boulton about fungi. He began by showing us a Fly Agaric-probably one of the most easily recognised with its red and white colouring. Then he showed us some wonderful pictures of fungi of all different sizes, shapes and colours. Most of them we had neither seen nor heard of. They had strange names like ‘Bearded tooth’, ‘Chicken of the Woods’, ‘Glistening Ink Caps’ and

‘Hare’s-foot Ink Cap’. He also talked about the best places to find fungi and how many had a special relationship with a host plant-as does the fly agaric with silver birch.Members had a great time at the Forties Weekend, with a Tombola and treasure hunt and are already looking forward to next year.On Wednesday 25th we had a coach trip to the ‘Time and Tide’ museum in Great Yarmouth. At our October meeting Beverley Cooper will talk about ‘In the footsteps of our Fathers’ on the Normandy to Holland beaches.

VOEWOODSUMMER SOCIAL

Despite the stormy weather, the Voewood Summer Social brought the local community together this August Bank Holiday to showcase an array of local talent. Holt Youth Centre Band exploded onto the stage, ready to energise the crowd with their raw talent amidst the rain and mist. Working with professional musicians from The Garage, based in Norwich, the Youth Centre Band supports local young people in raising their aspirations and forming lifelong friendships.Voewood are keen to support this inspiring initiative and auctioned one of the illustrations from the Charlie and Lola animations by

Lauren Child, raising £300.00 for the Holt Youth Centre. Appearing at Saturday’s Book Fair, Lauren Child (left), the Children’s Laureate, took us back to the moments when she first brought

her vibrant characters to life. It was a delight to see such nationally acclaimed figures talk alongside the owner of Voewood, Simon Finch.Voewood brought together favourite local acts, such as the sultry and understated Jazz chanteuse, Barbar Gough, alongside the magnificently outlandish ‘80s tribute band, Hot Squash and Simon created a programme that was as diverse and eclectic as Voewood’s interiors.Everyone enjoyed the opportunity to explore Voewood’s enchanting gardens, something usually only open to guests who hire the house for weddings or parties or sign up to the occasional Open House. All in all, in spite of the wind and rain, the event spoke to Voewood’s continuing power to hold people under its spell. If you’d like to know more about the magic of Voewood, then please visit our website at www.voewood.com.

THE 1940s WEEKENDHOLT SALUTES THE 1940s

The Holt 1940s Weekend returned on 15th and 16th September, marking the fourth year that the event has taken place in the town. The weekend’s star attraction were the D-Day Darlings, who many will recognise as 2018 Britain’s Got Talent finalists. The group performed their wartime renditions throughout the town centre on the event’s first day, to a fantastic public reception. There was entertainment and singing of wartime favourites around the town with military vehicle displays and drive bys. A constant stream of people were ferried from the railway station by the vintage buses and the spirit of the 1940s could be seen everywhere with so many visitors, businesses and local residents joining in. The Ration Book trail around the town was very popular and the pigeon race attracted a huge crowd with The D-Day Darlings releasing the birds at the war memorial where a minutes silence was observed in memory of David Olby who sadly passed away recently.Visitors to the town centre were truly spoilt for choice with, stalls, music, competitions and fundraising initiatives in support of Holt Community Café and 1st Holt Scouts. A true salute to the wartime spirit was had by all!

AMIS INDEPENDENT FUNERAL SERVICES AT HOLT 1940’s WEEKENDAmis Independent Funeral Services would like to thank the people of Holt, who arranged the fantastic weekend in the town and also to everyone who visited. It was a wonderful weekend and a lovely atmosphere with the D-Day Darlings topping it off with they’re beautiful singing. We were privileged to be part of it.We would also like to say a massive thank you to everyone who has supported us in creating our poppy memorial wall (right). We were privileged to hear so many amazing stories and the sacrifices that have, in turn, effected so many lives and were pleased to place so many poppies on our wall in their honour. Lest we Forget. We are halfway to reaching our target of £1000.00 for the Royal British Legion, which is fantastic. We will be continuing our campaign to get all of our 1000 homemade poppies dedicated to honor all those who have served, sacrificed and changed our world, to say thank you. We hope you will continue to support us and if you wish to dedicate a poppy, please pop into our Holt Office, 37 Bull Street, or our sister company Cromer & District Independent Funeral services, 32 West Street, Cromer and sponsor one. Our campaign will continue over the next few months with our poppies displayed in our branches and at future events; details on our website, Facebook and twitter.

KELLINGPROBUS CLUB

Kelling Probus Club held its September lunch meeting at ‘The Dales Hotel’ on 20th of the month. After the usual tasty lunch, for 20 members and guests, chairman Mike Clayton welcomed our speaker Nigel Digby who spoke on transport in Norfolk.Mike explained that not only was our speaker an artist but also an author and guitar teacher.Nigel told us he had always had an interest in railways and his favourite companies were M&GNR and GE who operated throughout Norfolk up to the late 30’s.We were told that in 1862 the local railways all operated around the hub of Norwich and there was little in the way of direct services between say King’s Lynn and Great Yarmouth without going in to Norwich. This presented problems both for passengers and freight and involved having to marshall freight several times in a journey so the rival companies co-operated to provide more direct links. Nigel then moved on to the livery and paintwork of the local trains and told us how every three years rolling stock was called in to Melton Constable to be overhauled and repainted. He told us that the preparation of the paint was a skilled job as it was all made on the spot from oil paint paste, linseed oil and turpentine. He went on to detail the skill of the painters and how they applied often eight or nine coats to produce a superior finish. He stated that all carriages were made of either mahogany or teak and were all retreated at the paint works. The final part of the talk covered his illustrations used in his books and articles and showed us what a meticulous artist he was.Dave Vickery thanked Nigel for his talk and the meeting closed at 3.00pm.If you would like to get more details of our friendly Probus Club call John Whittington on 01263 820333.

REMEMBERING WEYBOURNE’S MAD HATTER!Colin Rawlings, owner of The Red Dot Gallery, Holt, recalls: “In the early 1970s, I was the milk-boy in Weybourne, Kelling and Salthouse for the very jolly Percy English, The Milkman. ‘The Hatter’, as he was referred to, was a constant source of amusement and intrigue. It was with a sense of glee that I would learn of his exploits. To a then schoolboy, his tricks and cunning were like something from Monty Python - where else in my world was there a middle-aged gentleman dressed in top hat and red tailcoat riding a bicycle along the coast road? Who but ‘The Hatter’ could halt the unwary driver in order to offer up his cream bakelite telephone accompanied by: “I have a call for you....”? This, remember, was well before mobile phones existed. When he arrived in Weybourne, seemingly a wealthy individual, he opened his Antique Shop which was well stocked with the usual array of furniture and curios. However, the focus of his offering was a great collection of gentlemen’s hats, none of which could be had for any price! In fact many folk tell of trying to buy other items from his shop only to be met with an excuse as to why they were not for sale or were already sold.As time passed, so did the once buoyant funds and that, perhaps, is when the real antics began... In the depth of winter it was often the case that ‘The Hatter’ would cycle up to the then redundant railway station where he would help himself to the bulky wooden sleepers. Returning back, the 5ft wooden block would be pushed up the inglenook and set alight with resulting chimney fires. He would often be found in the kitchens of local hotels, early morning, whence he’d prepared a full English for one. The very smart Swiss restaurant, Gasche’s, conveniently opposite a certain Antique Shop, became a magnet for the wealthy and refined. Many unsuspecting diners would be joined at their table: “Good evening. How lovely to see you. Might I join you?” and with that, two became three, sometimes for aperitifs; other times the full dinner and guess who paid the bill.......? Thence, banned for life from said restaurant, revenge, it would seem, took the form of 999 calls with fire brigades descending on Weybourne’s celebrated restaurant, only to find no smoke and without fire! For me, ‘The Hatter’ was a happy and amusing happening; for others, I know, he was no less than a blimmin noosans. But what a character!”‘The Mad Hatter of Weybourne’ by Barrie Morris will feature in an exhibition ‘Quirks & Quiddities’ Folklore, Myth and Legends of Norfolk - Red Dot Gallery in Holt - 10th to 30th November.

A new production from fEAST Theatre

INTO THIN AIR‘A compelling mystery and tender family memoir’ by Rob John

Touring Norfolk and Suffolk October 2018It’s 1982. The Falklands war is on the telly. Dexy’s Midnight Runners haunt the airwaves and 15-year-old Norfolk school girl Susan Kemp is going off the rails. And then she vanishes ... into thin air.Thirty six years later her brothers Pete and Melvin still live in the shadow of Susan’s disappearance. This storyline is the basis of the new play by Rob John, Into Thin Air, which will be touring Norfolk and Suffolk in October. Rob acknowledges that when Norfolk people hear about the subject of his play they inevitably mention the tragic case of April Fabb the Norfolk teenager who disappeared in 1969.“I live in North Norfolk only a couple of miles from the place where April was last seen. I’ve often thought about the awful long-term impact of her disappearance on her family but although the idea for the play might have in some way been triggered by this well-known case my story and its characters are entirely fictional,” he says.Into Thin Air is the latest production of fEAST Theatre. Having established themselves as one of the region’s most accomplished professional touring theatre companies with sell out tours of The Canada Boys, Parachute and, earlier this year, Salt, fEAST describes the play as a compelling mystery, a tender family memoir and a sad comedy of ambiguous loss. It stars London-based actress Charlotte Price (pictured) who plays Susan, and is directed by Rob.Since the company was established in 2010 fEAST Theatre’s reputation has grown and the company has built up a loyal audience in the region with a series of well-received touring productions but they are hoping that this production will extend their audience base still further. CELEBRATING CHRISTMAS STOCKINGSAt All Saints Church, Beeston Regis we have staged a series of successful events during the year to raise funds for our Hospitality Project. When it came to an event for Christmas we wanted to try something different from a Tree Festival which is already done very well in Sheringham. So, we came up with the idea of a Christmas Stocking Festival which we are calling Celebrating Christmas Stockings. We hope to have an interesting range of stockings. Some people are busily making stockings of different styles, materials and sizes. We are grateful for the support of Stitch2Gether sewing group who are making some of the stockings. We would be pleased to receive any offers of Christmas Stockings whether recently made or family heirlooms to add to our display. We would also welcome any stories or memories about ‘opening stockings at Christmas’ to add additional interest to the displays. Our aim is to provide a colourful exhibition to brighten the gloomy days of early December. If you are able to help us in any way please telephone Derek or Elsa on 01263 824389.The Celebration will start on Friday 7th December and last until Sunday 9th December. The church will be open from 10.00am until 3.30pm (3.00pm on Sunday) and seasonal refreshments will be available. Put the dates in your diary and come along and support us at the Church on the Cliff Top.

Time to say #whatSUP with single-use plasticSmart new cups help the environment - and can save money, too

Smart, reusable, environmentally-friendly cups are now on sale in North Norfolk and they should prove a popular choice for people who want to do their bit to save the planet. The cups have been produced as part of North Norfolk District Council’s #whatSUP campaign, a push to slash the use of single-use plastic (SUP) in North Norfolk and beyond. The ‘Refill not Landfill’ branding is designed to spread the message that it’s easy to cut down on how much SUP we get through. As well as helping the environment, using one of these cups can quickly pay for itself. Many coffee outlets, for example, give a discount to customers who provide their own reusable cups.Reducing SUP use is particularly important in North Norfolk. No district in England has more Blue Flag beaches and helping to reduce the amount of SUP can only help the district’s beaches and the marine life in the sea.The cups are available for £5 from the North Norfolk Information Centre in Cromer.

HOLT COMMUNITY CENTREA note from the Chairman

I am pleased to say that we have a card reader payment machine now at the Centre, so that will make it much easier for people to pay for tickets, as they can be purchased over the telephone as well as in person. This machine can take contactless payments too, which can be used for tickets, but will be particularly useful to buy products at the bar in future. Even a packet of crisps can be bought with a quick touch of your card. On Saturday 20th October we will be having a Disco with Purple Haze Disco starting at 7.30pm, which we hope will bring some younger people into our Centre, too. Tickets are £5.00 in advance, or £6.00 on the door; call in to the Centre or ‘phone 01263 713427.At the end of October, actually on Hallowe’en night Wednesday 31st, we will be showing an archive film called ‘Ghosts of East Anglia’, very apt for this night, explaining some of the myths and legends of this area. The film starts promptly at 7.00pm, and there will be a light supper in the interval. There is no charge, but donations are welcome. I hope to see many of you there for a very spooky evening, and information will then be given about the film in November.June Clarke

MY NORFOLK,MY HOLT

The next interview in the ‘My Norfolk, My Holt’ series is with Harrie Morshuis, owner of the Feathers Hotel, on Thursday 18th October, between 11.00am and 12.00noon, at Holt Library.Harrie Morshuis was born in 1957 in Bandoeng,

Indonesia but spent his youth in Holland as the Dutch were ousted by Sukarno, president of the independent state of Indonesia, in 1958. In 1978 he started his degree in Hotel management at the Hotel School in The Hague, which he completed in 1982. After graduating, he went to Singapore to work at the Equatorial Hotel as an Assistant Manager for a year before relocating to Thailand; firstly in Bangkok, then Pattaya and lastly Phuket until 1989. In the same year, he was offered the position of General Manager at The Plantation Club in the Seychelles. It was then the first 5 star Hotel on the Island of Mahe. In 1992 he and his wife returned to England and acquired The Feathers Hotel in Holt. They have since lived in High Kelling and Edgefield. Apart from being a member of the MMBI (member of the British institute for innkeepers), he is also a member of the Chain the Rotisseurs and a local councillor on Edgefield parish council. These sessions are about valuing the contributions of individuals to the life of the community, past and present; about exploring Holt from different perspectives. Participants talk about the Holt and Norfolk they know and love, past and present; how it was when they first knew it, and how it is now, both from a personal and a professional point of view. Recordings of past sessions of ‘My Norfolk, My Holt’ are available as part of the Norfolk Heritage Centre Podcast webpage, which can be found here: www.thenorfolkheritagecentrepodcast.wordpress.com/my-norfolk-my-holt Booking for these sessions is helpful, please telephone Holt Library on 01263 712202. The event is free but donations to the library are welcome. Tea and coffee are available. ‘My Norfolk, My Holt’, is a way of bringing together different members and sections of the community, as well as valuing the place of the library. Future Dates:15th November - Beryl Knowles (retired Head of Holt Primary)13th December - Alan Leventhall (retired Community Librarian for Holt and Fakenham)

The last bus leaves NNUH at 8.20pm.The park and ride service is free for NNUH staff and is a £1 return for other bus users. Park and Ride buses stop at stand B outside West Outpatients at NNUH.Richard Parker, NNUH Chief Operating Officer, said: “We are delighted that the new park and ride service is up and running, which is now significantly improved. NORTH NORFOLK PHOTOGRAPHIC SOCIETYMalcolm Sales (pictured) gave a very interesting and inspiring talk to North Norfolk Photographic Society on Smart Phone Photography. Malcolm is an ex-professional wedding photographer, who now shoots houses for estate agents. The first half of the evening was taken up by displaying a number of prints. Whilst he wouldn’t have ever considered using the smart

phone for a wedding shoot, the advantage that it has is the immediacy, catching the moment, catching the light.Malcolm stressed that if you use it as a toy, you can expect poor images. Treat it as a serious camera and obey the same rules regarding vision, composition, exposure, focus etc., and you should be very pleased with the images that you can achieve.Malcolm shoots on the phone and edits on the phone. In .jpeg format, using Snapseed application (a free app), and then immediately uploads to a variety of destinations (postcards using Touchnote, photo books, sending to someone else via airdrop, social media etc.). He utilises the headphones call button as a cable release and also uses a mini gorilla tripod. The images he shared included black and white, panorama, street photography, landscape, and abstract. The second half of the talk was taken up with a practical demonstration of the Snapseed application. Malcolm took us through his Snapseed workflow: amend perspective to straighten any sloping horizontals or vertical (which should be minimal), then cropping, and only then tuning the levels in the image. He cautioned over saturating images, the smart

phone screen is unlikely to be properly colour calibrated. He demonstrated the various effects possible through the Vintage, Grunge, Double exposure and Frame effects. It is possible to save the image with all the adjustments kept as layers, to enable undoing at a later date, but Malcolm tends to compress the image and upload it straightaway. This he demonstrated by using Air Drop to send straight to the nearby phone of one of our members.Meetings of the North Norfolk Photographic Society are normally held on the 1st and 3rd Wednesdays each month at the Holt Community Centre. For further details please contact the club Secretary, Judith Wells at [email protected] or see the club website at http://www.nnphotosoc.org/ Robin Johnson

BOWLS LEAGUES 2018110,000 - the number of bowling deliveries bowled by Holt Club during the season! And about a third of these are bowled in matches in local league games, now all completed for another year. Of the many leagues available to bowls clubs in North Norfok, Holt currently competes in 5, with most of the Club Members involved in at least one.

Holt’s final positions in the league tables varied. The most exciting was in Division 2 of

the Cromer and District League. As shown in the attached extract, the first three clubs in the table tied on points and the fourth was very close behind, and Holt topped the table only because it had just (in fact only just) scored more shots than the second and third place teams. Division 1 next year!Of the other teams, the ‘Swallows’ and Holt’s Team in the Cawston Triples League each finished mid table. The ‘Tawny Owls’ in the Bowling Federation’s Premier West Division and the ‘Swifts’ in the NANSA afternoon league finished a bit lower. Many of the club players now move indoors for the winter, but will be back to once more contest the leagues next summer, when perhaps you will join us to help us achieve a bowling delivery total of 120,000?

HOLT RUGBY CLUB ANNIVERSARY GAMEMark Harrison reflects on a game 50 years ago

This season sees an important anniversary for Holt Rugby. 50 years ago, in 1968, they opened their new ground at Bridge Road, High Kelling, with a fixture against a representative team from Eastern Counties Rugby. On 14th October, 50 years to the day,

Holt will celebrate with a match also against Eastern Counties. Kick-off will be 3.00pm and it will be preceded by three youth matches starting at 11.00am and a celebratory lunch. On the touchline will be five members of the Holt team that appeared in the 1968 fixture, one of them will be Mark Harrison, a farmer who lives in Stiffkey. On his return from Agricultural College Mark played at West Norfolk for two seasons before becoming one of the founding members of Holt in 1961. He played in the first ever club fixture and was a regular member of the First XV for the following seven seasons. He could play in the back row or at centre three-quarter and was known for his determined tackling. At one stage he was picked for the Norfolk County side, one of six county players who featured in the Holt side in the 1968 fixture. One of them, prop Bob Steven, had been capped by Scotland before he moved to become a farm manager in Norfolk.Mark Harrison was a key player in the closely contested 1968 Holt Eastern Counties game, which the visitors eventually won by 25 points to 19. The report of the game states that Holt, who were trailing, ‘came back strongly when Mark Harrison made a long break’ leading to a try by his fellow farmer Neil van Poortvliet. Mark remembers how he was thrilled to make the break, “The ground was dry and there was some sparkling rugby played; Holt did well and we all enjoyed the game.”Reflecting on 50 years of rugby, Mark says that he sees ‘no dramatic changes in the game, though of course some rules have changed’. He admits however that today’s generation of players work harder at their game. Not only were team coaches unknown in the 1960s, but, “we didn’t bother to train much except for the odd bit at Gresham’s gym.”As an active Holt member and regular spectator at Bridge Road, Mark says most importantly Holt RFC is, above all, a happy club.Mark hopes that the players who will turn out this October, “enjoy it as much as we did.” Martyn Sloman

THAT’S LIFE!More true life experiences

At a conference I attended recently, a doctor was addressing a large audience.“The material we put into our stomachs should have killed most of us sitting here years ago,” he said. “Red meat is full of steroids and dye. Soft drinks corrode your stomach lining. Chinese food is loaded with MSG. High trans-fat diets can be disastrous, and none of us realise the long-term harm caused by germs in our drinking water. But there’s one thing that’s the most dangerous of all, and most of us have, or will, eat it. Can anyone here tell me what food it is that causes the most grief and suffering for years after eating it?”After several seconds of quiet, a 70-year-old man in the front row raised his hand and softly said, “Wedding cake?”When I worked in the Post Office, a lady barged in and started complaining that she’d got home to find a note from the postman, he’d tried to deliver a package but nobody was in.“My husband was home all day,” she fumed. After I gave her the package, I heard her say, “Oh, I’m so excited, it’s my husband’s new hearing aids!”I recently banged my elbow, and it hurt so much I really wanted to swear. But with my daughter close by, I just jumped up and down crying, ‘sugar, sugar, sugar’!After about 30 seconds or so, my daughter shrugged and said, “I really thought you were going to say ‘s***’ then, mummy!”

BLAKENEY ROWING CLUB MAKES A SPLASH

It has been a hectic and enjoyable few weeks for your local rowing club. Apart from the usual outings involving experienced and newer rowers, there have been some major events. The first of these took place on the morning of 1st September and it was the second Wells to Blakeney row. Our two skiffs, Hoi Larntan and Bluejacket, were ably crewed along the channel from Wells, into the open water around the Point, accompanied by a flotilla of kayaks and canoes. It was a great morning on the water. Many thanks to all who took part including, of course, those who undertook the responsibility of towing the skiffs to the starting point. The two skiffs barely had time to get dry before they were wheeled out for the Blakeney Regatta race the following day. This eagerly anticipated event was a real battle on the water as two well matched crews strove hard to gain advantage. It was the closest and most exciting race seen for many years. Hoi Larntan made it first over the line with every member of the crew pulling hard. Well done to all concerned!Once again, on 8th September, the Crabbers were well represented at The Great River Race on the Thames; both skiffs were involved. This is an international event and, this year, 320 crews were taking part in a race which is always full of colour and excitement. The competition over the occasionally turbulent waters was hard and keen.

GRR 2018 Blue Jacket emerging from under the

Millenium Bridge

However, the crew of Hoi Larntan completed the twenty-two miles in a very creditable time of just over three hours with the Bluejacket rowers coming in twenty minutes later. It was an exhausting but thoroughly enjoyable day. Many thanks must go to organisers and boat transporters who contributed so much time and effort. You can see some great action pictures on crablakeney.wordpress.com.Why not come along and try skiff rowing? Socialise on the water or compete. The choice is entirely yours. You may sample three rows before deciding whether to join and no previous experience is necessary. Coaching is always on offer. If you are interested in the fun of rowing, contact Tom on 01263 761570. You can also follow club activities on Facebook. See you on the water soon.Barry Howes
