The specific daily assignments are outlined in the following lines indicated by the DAY 1, DAY 2, DAY 3 and DAY 4 abbreviations. The chapter study questions, chapter vocabulary and glossary are located in the Elementary Literature Study Question booklets available for purchase from Kolbe Academy. Answers should be given in complete written or oral sentences. We suggest reading the weekly written assignment to the student at the beginning of the week. The student should write the assignment down on a note card (to be used as a bookmark) so that he can think about the assignment as he reads. The written assignments are suggested to be started on Thursday after the reading is done and completed by the following Monday. As the teacher, be sure to review the final exam now to ensure all concepts are covered with your student as he reads the book. Rather than making a great story tedious with an overload of vocabulary work, we encourage you to allow the student to keep the glossary handy as he reads and to have him do a more concentrated effort on a few words each week. All the Final Exam questions will be taken from the notes listed in these course plans and the Study Questions in the Elementary Literature Study Question booklet. Each week also includes a “memory gem.” If the student repeats the phrase a couple of times a day each week, he will improve his memory skills, increase his repertoire of phraseology, and prepare for one of the parts of the final exam at the same time. DAY 1

HOB Chapter 1

Have the student read Chapter 1. Chapter 1. Bilbo Baggins, the Hobbit, is described as a very peaceful, shy, likable fellow who has no desire for adventure. Gandalf, a wizard, shows up one fine day, and suddenly Bilbo's world is turned upside down. He unexpectedly must entertain fourteen guests and learns, while they are there, that he must go on an adventure with them. This adventure promises to be full of danger, so much so that they all wonder if any of them will come back alive. Yet they are all determined to right the wrongs of times gone by and plan to leave in the morning after giving Bilbo their rather large orders for breakfast.

DAY 2

HOB Chapter 2

Have the student read Chapter 2. Chapter 2. The fourteen and Gandalf set off on their journey with Bilbo none too prepared for the journey. They travel along in high spirits until they lose much of their food in a river when one of their ponies runs off in fear of a storm. Then they encounter their first danger, and the entire mood of the party changes.

DAY 3

HOB Chapter 1 & 2

Have the student answer Study Questions for Chapter 1 and 2.

HOB Written Assignment

Written assignment: Congratulations! You have finished reading The Hobbit. Now you need to write a nice book report on the story.

Student Daily Assignments Parent Daily Guidelines

DAY 1

Kolbe Academy Home School ASSIGNMENT ANSWER KEY

Literature - Novel Elementary

WEEK 1: Written Assignment: Pretend you are in Bilbo's place and are going on a similar kind of dangerous adventure before there were cars or guns or the like. What would you bring with you, and why would you bring it? Remember that you will be traveling by pony, so you cannot carry a lot of things. (minimum, 1 paragraph) Answers will vary, but they should include some of the following things: a change of clothes, a blanket, dried food, fresh fruit/veggies, a weapon of some sort, etc. The student should also explain why he is bringing each item. WEEK 2: Written Assignment: One of the marks of an outstanding writer is the ability to describe things in beautiful, unique ways. This week's Memory Gem (“The lightning splinters on the peaks, and rocks shiver, and great crashes split the air and go rolling and tumbling into every cave and hollow; and the darkness is filled with overwhelming noise and sudden light.”) is a good example of this kind of writing. This week, try your hand at describing some natural event (such as a waterfall, a rain storm, leaves falling, etc.) in a unique, beautiful way. Use strong adjectives and adverbs. (1 paragraph) Answers will vary, but they should use strong adjectives and adverbs and/or other descriptive tools such as similes, metaphors, or personification in order to describe a natural even that would otherwise be mundane. WEEK 3: Written Assignment: The Hobbit and company must suffer through quite a bit on their journey. They can't keep clean, they quite often go hungry, they are constantly on the watch for enemies, and they sleep only on a blanket or just on the ground. Choose one of the uncomfortable realities the party has suffered, and put yourself in their place. Write a paragraph describing what it might feel like to suffer in this way. You can pretend to be on the journey with Bilbo, be yourself, or create your own character. (Minimum 1 paragraph.) Help your student to really consider the discomforts the party has thus far suffered. Then encourage him to be as imaginative as possible. Encourage him, also, to use plenty of descriptive words and comparisons so that the reader can truly feel the pain he is describing. WEEK 4: Written Assignment: Describe, in your own words, how Bilbo saved all the dwarves from the spiders. (1 paragraph) Answers should include some of the following points:

Bilbo used the ring to hide from the spiders; He kept constantly on the move; He lured the spiders away then cut the dwarves down from the webs; He stabbed and killed as many spiders as he could with his little sword, Sting.

WEEK 5 Written Assignment: The goblins, spiders, trolls, and Gollum were evil, but Smaug represents the supreme evil in this story. He has done many evil acts (stealing, killing, coveting, etc.) like the other evil characters, but he is the only character to do everything in his power to try to get his victim to also become evil. Write a paragraph explaining how any of these evil characters have helped you, the reader, see the virtues of the good characters (like courage, loyalty, trust, justice, valor, charity, overcoming temptation, perseverance, temperance, choosing the good over what is easy, self discipline, and hope). The student's answer should point out the virtues the good character exhibits and it should clearly show how the evil acts of the evil character(s) have allowed him to more clearly see the virtues of the good character(s). WEEK 6 Written Assignment: Lots of sins are running rampant in this part of the story. Lust and greed for treasure, jealousy of those who hold the treasure, pride and thoughtlessness against those who want the treasure are some of the main sins that have besought otherwise good people. Was Bilbo, in your opinion, right or wrong to bring the Arkenstone to Thorin's enemies? Be sure to explain why you think he was right or wrong. (Minimum 1 paragraph.) Some reasons to think Bilbo is in the right:

Warring over treasure is wrong; Making peace will save lives; He could have just run away with the stone; He returned to his friends when he could have stayed in the other camp in comfort.

Some reasons to think Bilbo is in the wrong: Stealing is wrong; His friends will think of him as a traitor.

WEEK 7 Written Assignment: The Hobbit is a great example of an every day person rising up in a time of need and becoming a hero. Explain why the Hobbit is a hero using examples. (Minimum 1 paragraph.) Bilbo always seemed to find a way to be very useful in saving lives and helping to accomplish the mission. He saved the dwarves from the spiders, Mirkwood's elves, and from the dragon. He was also willing to give up his treasure for peace.
