The Walkaway Dress

 America after WWII was the land of Peace and Prosperity.  It was thetime of optimism and celebration. The drudgery of rationing, the miseryAlsoof the Great Depression, these things were all fading memories andthey lived in a land of atomic energy where anything was possible.  Theyno longer wanted to be stuck slaving at there tasks just to provide thebasic necessities. And, women didnt want to spend hours over theresewing, not when there was so many other things to do.

And, so began the now era of easy to make, easy to wear, easy on theeye fashion.  One of the most memorable and notable styles to emergefrom that time was The Walk Away Dress, released by Butterick in 1952." Cut at 9am, wear by noon". was the slogan.  So, in other words aproject you could Walk Away wearing in 3 hours, with a seriously cutefinished dress.  Which made this dress enormously popular.

 Also, in 1952 the women were still expected to follow rules of day wearand night wear. Which was appropriate day wear, and keep elegance forthe Evenings,  And, the cut of this dress states this perfectly with its highnecklines and flattering fit.

Research...

On researching, The Walk Away Dress, I have found that after it was seenon The Great British Sewing Bee (GBSB) episode 3,  alot of women thoughtthey would give the pattern ago.  Since it was put across as a simplepattern, after all it could be completed in 3 hours, right??

WRONG!!

Alot of women that have successfully tried it has said in there blogs,magazines etc.. that its been a massive fail!  But it has to be rememberedthat back in the 50s the women made all there own clothing due to rationing,and lack of money.  So, being used to making there own clothes on aregular basis this pattern was easy to them.  And, the challenges people aremeeting now, there would never have been back then.  We take things forgranted now, for instance just popping out to purchase zips, buttons &fabrics.

Plus sizing back then was also very different, most women had an hourglassfigure, so waists as small as a size 4.  So, these patterns weren`t made forour average size 14 ( the more curver women).  So, yes!! These patternsneed altered to suit the up to date women.

On finishing my first attempt of this vintage dress, using the GBSBPattern, Im happy with the finished garment.  But, can clearly see where itneeds altered to suit the modern day woman. 

Finished Walk Away Dress in size 12, needing altered at the waist line andbreast for perfect fit.

My intentions is to scale the pattern to fit our modern day women.  So itcompliments our figures, like it did our ancestors.  But also shows howfashions have changed over the generations

Plan of Action...

*  Adjust Pattern to suit all forms, so if someone with a larger form wantsto order one it flows as well over the rump, and sits perfect on thewaistline without wrinkling.  But, also so women with an H frame can alsowear it and still looks just as good.

How our silhouettes are defined...

* I also want to add a better closure so women fell more secure whenmoving around, without inner section riding up!

* Original pattern stitches together to beone big piece,

* Inner section closes at the back withone button,

* Circular skirt piece wraps round &buttons or ties at front, leaving a flowingcircular dress, finished with biasbinding.

Once complete, I will be doing a Customer Review. There will be 3ladies selected (sizes 8­10, 12­14 & 16­18).  These ladies will recieve aFREE up dated version of the finished garment.  With a review pack,which will contain the history of the garment and a review form, &return envelope.

Review will have a serious of questions regarding the garment, to befilled in and sent back.  Client will have the option to keep the garment(FREE OF CHARGE) if the garment fits & you are happy with it.
