The number of malaria casesreported  till  September  16this year is higher than thoserecorded last year, as per da­ta  released  by  the  Delhimunicipal corporations.

The  data  reveal  that  247cases of malaria were report­ed  this  year  till  the  secondweek  of  September.  Nearly100 cases were  reported  inthe past two weeks.

During the same period in2018, there were 225 cases;410 in 2017; 286 in 2016; 66in 2015; and 120 in 2014. 

Main monthsAdditionally, a review of da­ta  since  2014  shows  that  amajority of cases of vector­borne diseases are reportedin the months of Septemberto December. 

For instance, last year, outof  3,436  cases  of  vector­borne  diseases  recorded  inDelhi,  86.3%  (2,965  cases)were reported between Sep­tember and December.

Dengue casesThe number of cases of den­gue  till  September  16  thisyear stand at 171. 

Out of these, up to 80 cas­es were reported in the lasttwo weeks. 

The  lowest  number  ofdengue cases in the same pe­riod was recorded in 2014 at55.  The  highest  number  ofdengue cases in the last fi��veyears was reported in 2015 at15,867.

Chikungunya casesThe number of cases of chi­kungunya is also starting topick  up  with  60  cases  re­ported so  far  this year. Outof these, around 30 were re­corded in the last two weeks.

Meanwhile,  domesticbreeder  checkers  (DBC)  ofthe three municipal corpora­

tions  called  off��  their  strikeafter  receiving  assurancesthat contract workers wouldbe made permanent after re­viewing  the  vacant  posts,said president of Anti Mala­ria Unity Workers Union De­vanand Sharma. 

Committees  have  beenformed  in  this  regard  in allthree unions, he added.

The DBCs are responsiblefor checking the prevalenceof  breeding  conditionsacross the city. 

So  far,  the  civic  bodieshave  reported  that  offi��cialsconcerned have visited up to1.19 lakh houses. 

The  South  Delhi  Munici­pal  Corporation  StandingCommittee also passed a re­solution recommending thecreation of additional posts,added benefi��ts and a raise inthe salary of DBC workers.

Moving the motion, Lead­er of SDMC House KamaljeetSherawat said that Chief Mi­nister Arvind Kejriwal, whohad been praising the dropin  the  number  of  denguecases, a consequence of thework done by DBC workers,would  surely  provide  fund­ing for the same.

Malaria cases higher than last year: reportAround 100 cases reported in last two weeks, say civic bodies

Indian Institute of Technolo­gy  Delhi  announced  onMonday that it will be orga­nising the Joint Entrance Ex­amination  (Advanced)  in2020  for  admissions  in  23IITs across India.

The decision was taken ata meeting of the IIT Joint Ad­mission Board ( JAB) held onSunday,  the  institute  said,adding that the IIT JEE (Ad­vanced)  2020  will  be  con­ducted on May 17. 

The IIT JAB also decidedto hold the JEE (Advanced)2020 for the fi��rst time in theU.S.  where  an  examinationcentre will be set up in San

Francisco. IIT­Delhi directorV. Ramgopal Rao said: “IITshave taken a conscious deci­sion  to  encourage  culturaldiversity on their campuses.JEE exam is now conductedin fi��ve countries worldwideand we have added USA tothis list. The U.S. has bene­fi��ted signifi��cantly by the pre­sence of a  large number ofIIT alumni there.” 

The  institute  stated  that

the JAB has decided to shor­tlist 2.5  lakh students  fromJEE  (Main)  2020  to  appearfor JEE (Advanced) 2020. 

“On May 17, 2020, the fi��rstpaper of JEE (Advanced) willstart at 9.00 a.m. and end at12 noon. The second paperwill be conducted from 2.30p.m. to 5.30 p.m. Earlier, itused to start at 2 p.m. Thishas  been  changed  to  allowstudents,  especially  thePwD candidates, more timebetween  the  two  papers.This will also help in biomet­ric verifi��cation at the centersin  timely  manner,”  saidSiddharth Pandey, organiz­ing  chairman,  JEE  (Ad­vanced) 2020.
